    INTRODUCTION

    Section 1: Access Control

Access control is computerized control over entry to a ny a rea tha t can be secured

w ith a lock and key. Entry is only allow ed to a uthorized people at aut horized times.

Control of who is allowed to come and go is easily maintained.

The w eakness of a lock and key security system is the common key. The key is a

readily duplicat ed piece of metal tha t gives anyone w ho holds it access to a n a rea.

The risk of lost or stolen keys, w ith the expense of cha nging locks, is a costly

problem. Access control is an effective and a fforda ble solution to this problem.

With a ccess control, ea ch person receives a ca rd or keycode w hich restricts a ccess

to a uthorized areas a t a uthorized times. A small, programmable control panel

allow s or denies access. If a ca rd is lost or stolen, or if a keycode is no longersecure, the cont rol panel can be reprogrammed quickly an d ea sily.

An a dd itiona l benefit of a ccess control is report ca pability. The system provides

reports of all card/keycode act ivity, including w hether a ccess wa s grant ed or

denied, and w hy. A permanent record of a ll entries to a n a rea can be maintained.

    Section 2: System Overview

    2-1: N-1000-II

The N-1000-II control panels a re the decision-making unit s in the a ccess control

system. Each control panel contains a centra l processing unit (CPU) and memory

for local control capability. Control panel da ta base informat ion is programmed

from a cent ral programming device (computer, printer/programm er or dat a t ermi-

na l). The panels then operat e independent of t he programming device. In this

distributed da ta base system, the programming d evice need not be on-line for

    system operat ion.

The cont rol pan els interfa ce to the progra mming device via the C-100-A1, 20 mA

current loop con verter or via the 485 multi-drop interf a ces (N-485-PCI-2 or N-485-

HUB-2) w ith the a dd ition of the N-485-API or 485 Board . A single communicat ion

loop supports up to 63 uniquely addressed cont rol panels if th e 20 mA loop isutilized or 31 pa nels for 485 communications. A typical 20 mA communicat ion

loop configuration is show n in Figure 2-1 w hile Figure 2-2 illustrates a typical 485

    multi-drop configuration.

The N-1000-II control panel provides 16 points for ala rm monitoring and fo ur

output cont rol relays. The N-1000-II-X cont rol pan el includes four a dd itiona l relays

(providing a tota l of eight) an d ha s expanded da ta base/buffer memory capacity.

The N-1000-II-X is show n in figure 2-3 w ith enclosure a nd ba tt ery.

Control panels can operate in a buffered mode, in w hich system transactions are

stored in tran saction buffer memory at t he panels, rather tha n transmitted to t he

programming d evice. Every tran saction (input point cha nge of sta te, code use) uses

one locat ion in buffer memory. The buffered informat ion can la ter be transmittedto the programming device.

The N-1000-II firmware (version 08.01.29 or later) has a built-in test capability

tha t ca n be used to check the functioning of most of the circuit boards hardw are.

Refer to Appendix B: Troubli ng Shooti ngfor details.

    2-2: Programming Devices

N-1000-II control panels in a communicat ion loop are programmed w ith a persona l

    computer, printer/programmer or d at a terminal.

When using a persona l computer as the system progra mming device, the PC soft -

w are serves as a da ta base mana ger for the N-1000-II control panels. Information is

entered into the PC dat aba ses and then d ow nloaded to the control panels. During

the dow nload procedure, the PC softwa re converts the data base information at the

disk level to a series of command st rings from t he N-1000 instruct ion set. The

commands a re then sent to th e appropria te control panels. The panels then operate

independently from the computer. The ad vant ag es of using a computer as the

system programming device include ease of programming a nd operat ion, perma-

nent d isk storage of a ll data base information a nd extensive report options.

Figure 2-2. Typical 485-Mul t id r op Con f igur a t ion . The N-1000-II can be used wi thN-1000-III / IV panels. When the N-1000-II is configured for 485 commun icati on, as in thi sexample, the N-485-API-2 f i rmware version must match the 485 version i n the N-1000-II I/ IV.

the control panels 20 mA port. Refer to the N-485 Board Installati on Guidefo rfurther deta ils.

    2-6: PROM Versions

The N-1000-II PROM (progra mma ble rea d-only memory) chips provide perma -

nent stora ge for the program an d control logic informat ion necessary to coordi-na te a nd d rive the system hardw are. The PROM chip is also referred to a s the

    control panels FIRMWARE.

The PROM version in use determines the commands a nd progra mming fea tures

ava ilable for use w ith the control panel. Operations such as ala rm point program -

ming, site code checking, ca rd/keycode capacity, t ran saction buffer capacity, Visitor

an d Limited Use sta tus cards and loca l anti-passback are all functions of the PROM

version in use. Specific comma nd string syntax and the ava ilability of advanced

programming comma nds a re also dependent upon the PROM version.

    4-15: Additional Installation Information

Northern Computers recommends the following installation techniques for the

    N-1000-II panel:

    DO

Dorun all wiring for door locks/strikes and panel primary power in a sepa-rate conduit* or allow at least 12 inches of space betw een the power cables

    and the data/reader cables.

Douse shielded cables or metal conduit when necessary to reduce interferingradio frequency emissions.

    DO NOT

Do notmount the power supplies, modem, or external relays inside theN-1000-II enclosure. An empty enclosure (ENC-0 or ENC-2) is availa ble fo r

this purpose. It is the same size as the N-1000 enclosure, w ith the same

    locking mechan ism.

Do notstring w ire across the fa ce of th e N-1000-II panel.

Do notuse the same pow er supply for both locks an d cont rol panel or locksand readers.

Do notmount the control panel in or near an area tha t ha s electric noise(e.g., next to a large electric motor or power transformer).

*Conduit insures compliance with Subpart S of Part 15 of FCC regulations.

    Section 5: Operation

    5-1: Card Reader/Keypad Operation

Some card readers require that a forma t (softw are) command be programmed

into the host N-1000-II controller before cards can be read . If th e forma t com-

mand is not programmed into the control panel, these readers or keypads will

not transmit card numbers to the terminal/printer. See Appendix A: ProgrammingQui ck Reference Guidefor complete F Commandformat listings.

Verify card rea der/keypad operation before progra mming. Codes need not be

programmed into memory to verify reader/keypad operation. When a code is

entered or a card presented, it should appear on the display/printer, followed by

    an NFor not found message.

The control panel continuously monitors the card read er and keypad ports for

code use. Access is restricted by placing timezon e limitat ions on t he codes in use,

NOT by timezone controlling (d isabling) th e read ing devices.

Card reader or keypad activation of output points is determined by the presence

or absence of the a nti-passback option in pan el memory. See I Command, AOptionin Appendix A for further information.

In ant i-passback configurations w ith tw o card readers or tw o keypads, both

devices activat e Output Relay 1 (Doo r 1) upon valid cod e use (Figure 5-1). In

anti-passback applications requiring a separate output relay for the reader (such

as turnstile applications), refer to A Command in Appendix A.

In configura tion s WITHOUT ant i-passba ck ena bled, Ca rd Reader or Keypad 1activates Output Relay 1 (Door 1) and Card Reader or Keypad 2 activates Output

    Relay 2 (Door 2) (Figure 5-2).

Card readers and keypads can be reassigned to activate a specified input point,

output point or group (multiple outputs) upon valid code use, via the A Com-mand. Refer to Appendi x A.

Physica l StateInput points have physical states of openand closed. An open input is consideredto be in ALARM condition. A closed input is considered to be in normalcondi-tion.

Software StateInput points have softwa re states of unshunted(active) and shunted(not a ctive). When an input is unshunted, all physical changes of state (openings and clo-

sures) are recognized. When an input is shunted, physical changes of state are

not recognized. Input shunting is software controlled and does not involve a

physical change of state of the input.

TimezoneThe timezone para meter defines the time the input point is aut oma tically

    shunted (deactivated).

    5-3: Relay Output Points

All N-1000-II relay output points have both normally-open and normally-closed

contacts, used to switch (activate/deactivate) electrical devices. Output points

have only a physical state, a s described below :

    Physical State

Output points have physical states of DE-ENERGIZED and ENERGIZED. When an

output is de-energized, no rmally-open and norma lly-closed cont acts are in

normal state. When an output is energized, normally-open contacts become

closed and normally-closed contacts become open.

The defa ult sta te of a ll output points is de-energized. No program ming is neces-

sary to keep outputs in the default state. Programming is only necessary to

    energize output points.

Not e : The appropr iate side of the relay contact ( normal ly-open or normal ly -closed)

MUST be used to sat isfy the fol lowing condi t ions:

Door locks MUSTbe w ired such that the following conditions are met:

    1. DE-ENERGIZEDrelay outputs (default state) result in LOCKEDdoors.

    2. ENERGIZEDrelay outputs result in UNLOCKEDdoors.

Output points are assigned both pulse time and timezone parameters, as de-

    scribed below:

Pulse TimeThe pulse time para meter defines the a mount o f time th e output point is ener-

gized when triggered, such as upon valid code use.

TimezoneThe timezone para meter defines the time the output is autom at ically energized.

Outputs 13 and 14 control LEDs for card rea ders 1 and 2, respectively. Ca rd

reader LEDs change state upon valid code use for the duration of the pro-

    5-5: Auto-Relock Operation

The a uto-relock feat ure results in the immediat e re-locking a nd rearming

(unshunting) of a door when the door status switch is closed after entry. With

auto-relock operation, an output relay (controlling a door lock) de-energizes

w hen the corresponding input point (d oor status sw itch) returns to norma l state, and the input point is rearmed (unshunted) rather t han remaining energized

(shunted) for the duration of its pulse/shunt time.

Auto-relock associat ions betw een inputs a nd outputs a re NOT considered inter-

locks and do not appear as interlocks on input point reports and output point

    reports.

Auto-relock operation can be set manually with the V Command, K optionfoundin Appendi x A.

Default a uto-relock operation is described below and illustrat ed in figures 5-8

    an d 5-9.

    With Anti-PassbackWith a nti-passback enabled, Input 1 is configured for aut o-relock w ith Output 1.

Without Anti-PassbackWithout an ti-passback enabled, Input Point 1 is configured for a uto-relock w ith

Output 1 and Input 2 is configured for auto-relock operation with Output 2.

    5-6: Timezone-Controlled Doors

When timezone-controlling a door (for free access) that is operated by a card

reader or keypad, the time zone must be assigned to the relay output point.

    Example:

You w an t t o keep Door 1 (controlled by Ca rd Reader 1) unlocked d uring Time-

    zone 5, defined a s 9 A.M. to 6:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.

Timezone 5 must be assigned to Output 1 (to un lock the do or during th at time-

    zone).

The defa ult interlock to shunt th e door sta tus switch w ill prevent a n ala rm from

occurring w hile the output is pulsed/energized.
