INTRODUCTION

Each year, North Shore Community College administers a follow-up survey to program

graduates. In March 2007, the survey was distributed to the 839 certificate and degree program

graduates of the Class of 2006. The results of this survey were reported to the Massachusetts’

Department of Education (MDOE) via the College’s Fall 2007 Career and Technical Education

Report which measures the effectiveness of all occupational programs by four Core Indicators of

Effectiveness as mandated by the Perkins Vocational and Technical Act of 1998. Core Indicator 3

requires the College to achieve a 65% response rate and an 85% positive placement rate of its

occupational graduates (i.e., a graduate has enlisted in the military, is employed, or is pursuing

additional education) in each program of study. Reporting measures are now under review by

Massachusetts Department of Education and the survey guidelines will change next year.

Additionally, the follow-up survey provides feedback to College departments/divisions

regarding graduates’ opinions of the quality of educational services, as well as information on the

impact and effectiveness of their schooling when applied to their place of employment or continuing

education pursuits. As such, the Graduate Follow-Up Study provides information for both academic

and institutional planners to enhance NSCC’s academic and institutional services.

The report is organized in three major sections: Survey Method and Participants, Career

Respondent Results and Transfer Respondent Results. Further, the Career/Transfer Respondent

sections are presented according to the sections of the survey: Demographic Descriptors,

Employment Status, Educational Status, Plans and Aspirations, and Graduates’ Assessment of

their NSCC Experiences. The report closes with a summary of the key findings. The survey

instrument, comments, and a listing of institutions where NSCC’s graduates are continuing their

education are included in the Appendix.

METHOD

Survey Administration

In March 2007, a Graduate Follow-Up Survey packet consisting of a cover letter, survey, and

business reply envelope was mailed to all 839 North Shore graduates of the Class of 2006. After

ten working days, a reminder postcard was mailed to those graduates who did not respond.

Between May and October 2007, telephone interviews were conducted with graduates who had not

returned their surveys. In addition the National Student Clearinghouse was used to track students

who were pursing additional education.

Instrument

The four-page Graduate Follow-Up survey is composed of three sections. Section A:

Assessment of Your NSCC Experience and Education, Section B: Employment Status, and

Page 5: myweb.northshore.edumyweb.northshore.edu/users/llachape/graduate... · Highlights of the Class of 2006 A 10-Month Follow-Up Study • ALL GRADUATES • 839 students graduated in the

Section C: Your Educational Status, Plans, and Aspirations. For students who were contacted

via the telephone, interviewers obtained information on selected questions. These included items

1-5 in Section A, items 10-13 in Section B, and items 15-19 in Section C.

Employment and educational status data from the survey are used to report both response and

positive placement rates to meet MDOE requirements of Core Indicator 3. All other information

provides college faculty and staff with feedback about graduates’ accomplishments in reference to

employment and continuing education and about NSCC’s performance as an institution of higher

education.

Participants The 839 graduates of NSCC’s Class of 2006 span 81 programs of study, 46 degree programs

and 35 certificate programs. Table 1 indicates demographic descriptors of the group: gender,

ethnicity/race, and special needs. By comparison to the Class of 2005, the number female

graduates (both Degree and Certificate Programs) increased from 535 to 575 (7.5%). Male

graduates increased from 254 in 2005 to 264 graduates in 2006, an increase of 10 male graduates

or 3.9%. Hispanic graduates represent 6.2% (N=52) of the Class of 2006. While the number of

African American graduates fell to 39 in 2006, this cohort represents 4.6% of the total Graduate

population ~ compared to 6.7 % of the Class of 2005. The white graduate population increase to

672 students in 2006 compared to 626 students in 2005 – representing 80.1% of the 2006

graduates.

RESULTS

Respondents

The Graduate Follow-Up Survey was completed by a total of 590 graduates representing a

70.3% response rate. Table 2 shows the percentage of surveys completed by 81 programs offered

with few exceptions we were able to get surveys completed graduates in most programs. The

respondents are similar to their cohort in type of degree, gender, ethnicity, and special needs

indicators.

♦ CAREER PROGRAM RESPONSES

Table 3 presents’ demographic descriptors for each Career program and provides the

number of graduates, and the number and percent of graduates who responded to the survey with

their corresponding demographic descriptors of gender, ethnicity, and special needs. The number of

first generation college students is listed in the last column of the table. Data indicate:

• Most programs had at least one respondent, and 51 of the 65 Career programs registered a 65% or greater response rate.

• An overall 70.7% response rate was obtained (n=475 out of 672 graduates). The Class of 2006 response rate was slightly higher than last year’s 67.9% and remains adequate to meet the MDOE mandated response rate.

• The survey revealed that 5.3% of respondents (n=25) students in the class of 2006 identified themselves as Academically Disadvantaged, 7.6% (n=36) as Economically Disadvantaged and 9.3% (n=44) as First Generation College Students.

Employment Status

The survey lists the following employment classifications: a) military, b) employed in a

related field [fulltime or part-time], c) pursuing additional education, d) employed in a non-related

field, e) unemployed, and f) not in the labor force. The employment status of graduates by program

is summarized in Table 4. The total number of graduates is listed along with the number of

respondents and their corresponding employment status. The data are duplicated headcounts

within each program. Thus, if a graduate is employed as well as pursuing additional education, that

graduate is counted under both headings.

• 60.8% (n=289) of the responding graduates are employed full-time or part-time,

46.5% (n=221) are pursuing additional education, and 2.1% (11 graduates) are looking for employment or are not in the labor force.

• 87.5% of 2006 employed graduate respondents were employed full time (n=254) and 12.5% part-time (n=36).

• Ten graduates indicated that he/she was looking for employment and two graduates indicated that they are not in the labor force.

In terms of meeting Core Indicators of Performance, graduates who are unemployed or not in

the labor force are not considered positive placements. Table 5 shows the graduates’

unduplicated employment status by program based on the statewide indicators. If a graduate

responds that he/she is both working and pursuing additional education, the graduate is counted

under the employment category. The total and number of surveyed graduates are presented

followed by their corresponding employment status or classification. The last column indicates

whether or not the 85% placement indicator was met for the program. The placement standard is

calculated by summing the number of surveyed graduates who enlisted in the military, are

employed, or have pursued additional education and dividing by the total number of respondents.

Data from Table 5 indicates:

• More than 2 out of every 3 (60.8%, n=289) of the respondents are employed. • Of the 71 programs, 54 had 100% success rate ~ they exceed the 85%

performance standard.

• There were six programs were no response was obtained, each of these of these programs had only one graduate.

Table 6 shows the reported hourly wage ranges of graduates who are employed by

program of study. Only a handful of respondents (n=5, 1.7%) earn between $5.00-$9.99

dollars per hour, while 29 respondents (10.1%) earn between $15.00 and 19.99 per hour.

Close to 20% of respondents are earning over $20.00 per hour (n=55, 19.1%). Nursing

Education (NE) and Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation (HA) each had a graduate earning

greater than $35.00 per hour.

Graduates employed full-time in a related field were asked to provide additional information

regarding their job search process, adequacy of NSCC’s preparation for their present occupation,

and job satisfaction. Only 100 graduates responded and provided information about their job

seeking process. Data on the job search process is indicated in Table 7. The adequacy of NSCC’s

preparation of graduates is shown in Table 8 by program of study.

Job Search Process:

• Length of Time to Obtain their FIRST Full-time Position: Slightly more than half of the graduate respondents (54%) obtained jobs prior to graduating. 9% found a position in less than one month after graduation. For some 23.0% of the graduates, the process took 1 to 3 months, another 8.0% required 4-6 months. 6% of the respondents (6 graduates) indicated it took greater than 6 months of job searching.

• NSCC Preparation for the Workforce: The majority of the respondents indicated that

they were More than Adequately (35.1%) or Adequately (57.7%) prepared for the work they are presently doing.

• Problem Areas in Job Search: The major problem for graduates was finding a job that paid enough, 13.8% found this a major problem and 18.1% considered it a moderate problem. Most North Shore Community College graduates have decided what they wanted to do upon graduation, 72.4% indicate that is not a problem. Race/sex discrimination is low on the list of concerns among graduates. Only 1.7% of respondents indicated this was a major problem vs. 91.3% who saw race/sex discrimination as not a problem.

Career Graduates’ Assessment of Their NSCC Experiences

Graduates were asked to provide feedback regarding their NSCC

experiences: goals, achievements, satisfaction level, and choices. Most NSCC

students enroll to obtain a degree or certificate (n=360, 92.5%).

Table 9 indicates the educational goals of the Career Respondents: TABLE 9

2006 CAREER GRADUATES EDUCATIONAL GOALS

Educational Goal # % - Obtain a certificate or degree 360 92.5% - Transfer to a 4-year college/university 4 1.0% - Upgrade job/employment skills 10 2.6% - Personal growth/improvement 4 1.0% - No specific goal/unsure 11 2.8%

Table 11 summarizes graduates’ importance and satisfaction ratings with aspects of

their NSCC’s experience. More than half of the respondents rated all of the twelve

statements presented in Question 6 as Somewhat to Very Important and also were

Somewhat to Very Satisfied. Educational Status, Plans and Aspirations (Table 10)

All Career program respondents, whether employed full-time or part-time and in a

related or unrelated field, are included in this section of the analysis. Educational status

focused on whether or not the graduate was currently attending school (question 15). If

“Yes,” they were asked to indicate how well NSCC prepared them for continuing their

education (question 17) and their experiences with the Transfer Process (question 18). If not

in school, they were asked to indicate if they plan to continue their education at a later date

(question 19). Graduates were also asked in questions 4 and 5 if they would have selected

the same majors if they were to start college anew and if they’d attend North Shore.

Graduates’ responses by certificate and degree award status are summarized in Table 10.

Surveyed graduates reported the following:

• Attending School: Of 445 graduates who indicated whether or not they

were currently attending school, 49.4% (n=220) were attending full-time or part-time.

19

• All but five of the respondents indicated that NSCC adequately or more than adequately prepared them to continue their education.

• 50.6% (n=225) indicated they were not attending school. More degree graduates (66.6%) than certificate graduates (33.3%) were not attending school. However the number of certificate and degree graduates indicating that they plan to continue their education at a later date was similar (79.7% certificate, 74.8% degree). Of those not currently attending school, 10.1% of certificate graduates and 17.7% of degree graduates are undecided about continuing their education.

• Transferring to Another College/University: Both degree and certificate graduates who transferred indicated that they didn’t encounter major problems, 89.5% of certificate graduates and 88.4% of degree graduates reported smooth sailing in the transfer process. Eight graduates experienced moderate setbacks in the transfer process.

• Choosing Their Major/NSCC Again: 72.6% of the respondents indicated that they would choose the same major area of study again. A majority of graduates (96%) indicated that they would definitely or probably choose to attend NSCC again. 2% said they probably would not or were unsure.

On a five-point scale, more than half (69.1% or 192 respondents) of Career graduates

rated their NSCC educational experience Excellent, 28.1% (n=78) Good, and 2.2% (n=6)

Average. Thus, 99.3% of the graduates rated their experience at NSCC positively.

Among 275 respondents, 76.0% (n=209) would Definitely Attend NSCC Again if they

were to start college over again. Uncertain were 22.2% (n=61) of the respondents (i.e.,

Probably Yes and Uncertain). Five respondents (1.8%) would Probably Not Choose NSCC

again if they were to start college again.

♦ TRANSFER PROGRAM RESPONSES

Demographic Descriptors

Table 14 indicates that NSCC graduated 167 Transfer students in 6 programs of study

in the Class of 2006. The data shows the following:

• An overall 68.9% response rate was achieved with all six programs eliciting some response from the survey. Response rates ranged from 33% to 100%.

• More female Transfer graduates (59.3%) responded than male (41.7%), and

about three out of every four respondents were Caucasian (83.5%).

• Academically disadvantaged respondents accounted for 5.2% of the Transfer respondents, similar to the Career respondents (5.3%). The number and percent of 1st generation college students, however, is significantly higher than last year’s graduating class with 14 students or 12.2% compared to 2005 (8 students and 6.4%).

Educational Aspirations and Plans of 2003 Transfer Graduates

All Transfer graduates were asked to indicate their current enrollment status, academic

preparation and to rate the transfer process. As indicated in Table 15:

• 9 out of every 10 (89.9%) respondents are currently studying at another college/university. Only 10.2% (10 graduates) indicated that they are not attending any school at all. Three graduates not currently attending college indicated that they would continue their education at a later date. Only one graduate said they had no intentions of continuing their education.

• All of the respondents felt that NSCC More Than Adequately or Adequately prepared

them for continuing their education. • 2 out of every 3 respondents (72 graduates or 86.7% of total respondents)

transferred to another college/university with little to no problems in the transfer process. Only two graduates who transferred indicated that he/she encountered many setbacks/problems in transferring out of NSCC. .

In measuring Transfer graduates’ importance/satisfaction levels, Table 16 indicates

eight of the twelve items were rated higher than 70% in the Somewhat to Very Important

Linear Trend Data: Class of 2002 - 2006

Table 17 provides linear trend data on key highlights of each graduating class 2002

through 2006. The number of students graduating has increased significantly over the last

five years from a low of 657 in 2003 to the current 839 in 2006 (a 27.7% increase). The

overall rate of response (70.3%) increased slightly from last year (67.9%) and is the highest

in five years.

The rate of response for career graduates has increased for the last 2 years to the

current 70.7% (up from 67.9% in 2005 and 65.8% in 2004). Increasing or remaining steady

is the number and percent of career graduates employed full or part- time (61.2% compared

to 50.3% in 2004 and 94.2% in 2002). In contrast, however, there was a significant increase

in the number of career graduates furthering their education (169 students or 46.3% of the

respondents). This percentage is more than double that of the prior 4 years when graduates

attending school yielded less than 10% of the total respondents. The unemployment rate of

2006 career program graduates (2.9%) increased from last year (0.2%). The percentage of

graduates who have chosen not to work or attend school (i.e., not in the labor force) remains

small for all North Shore Community College graduates.

Linear trends for the Transfer Graduates show a significant increase in the number and

percent of respondents for the class of 2006 (n=68.9%). The number of respondents

successfully transferring to another college/university (n=76.6%) is the highest in five years.

Office of Planning and Institutional Research Graduate Follow-up Survey Comments 2006 (AV) Aviation Science: Many other colleges have formed bridge programs with industry corporations. NSCC is behind in this regard. Specifically, the Aviation Science program could be expanded to draw more students to NSCC and increase the revenue stream at the same time. The professional pilot program was a great start for my college goals. The joint admissions/partnership worked out really well for me and my transfer into Embry-Riddle. (AH) Animal Care Specialist: Mostly excellent teachers, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Reike I & II especially are excellent classes. When I first applied to the Animal Care Program I wanted to do Vet Tech but at the mandatory orientation meeting students were actively discouraged by the program director to enter the Vet Tech program unless they really wanted to do Vet Tech – which is understandable, but she should have also emphasized that unless you start your own pet care business the pay prospects for animal care jobs is quite low. I regretted not doing the Vet Tec program after graduating and beginning the job search, which made it feel like I wasted a couple of years. (BA) Business Accounting: Great place to get a foundation in college. Best place to learn how to manage your time. Teachers are great and want you to succeed in college and in life. ____________ was a great teacher inside class and outside. There are so many great people that want you to succeed and I can’t say enough about that. NSCC is a very good starting point. I transferred to UMass Boston with solid basics. A lot of my credits from NSCC were accepted. It’s affordable and the Lynn Campus is easily accessible. A wide range of online and regular classes gives the school and students a lot of flexibility. Unfortunately, there seems to lack a program that allows students, especially in Business Administration, to be in a professional environment. To do a research with a company for example. Pipeline website is very good. But improvements can always be made so that students can do a lot of things online, instead of going to see a representative. I would recommend anyone to attend NSCC. It is very important to the community, low-income families and to the state by producing read-to-work/hire students. NSCC has allowed me and challenged me to dream bigger. Now, because of my very good experience at NSCC, I dream to get a Master’s degree in Business Management and Information Management. I love North Shore Community College! I miss it (the facilities, food, education). I’ve learned a lot. Thank you. My overall experience at NSCC was great. Most of my instructors and courses were wonderful and the student diversity was good too. My instructors were very helpful with real-world advice and suggestions; however, I found some of my advisors to not be very knowledgeable with my major/career choices. The courses I needed to complete were always available and usually at convenient times and the financial aid staff was very helpful and patient. I was a little disappointed with the transferability of the NSCC Courses – for example – my 2 year accounting degree would not completely satisfy the equivalent of 2 years of coursework at a local state school. Overall, my educational experience was a positive one and I would highly recommend NSCC to prospective students. (BG) Those instructors who are less accommodating to students should be dealt in a way to either change or be dismissed. Two instructors I had insulted me and one gave me no additional help needed when requested. I practically begged for help and received little to none. I did complain to a manager with no satisfaction. NSCC should provide more “hands on” in the work environment. Overall, instructors were EXCELLENT!

(BK) Business Marketing: I had an excellent educational experience at NSCC and recommend it to anyone interested in continuing education. I completed my degree by taking night classes where the professors were all very knowledgeable and interesting. I am considering additional course work in the near future. (BM) Business Management: I loved North Shore. I was always willing to give things a try. North Shore needs more engineering/technical programs. I love vocational/technical trade work as a career. North Shore has failed in this area. I started North Shore in the manufacturing program classes and the program got cancelled my third semester, which put me at a disadvantage. I chose the management program as a major because I wanted to train people for there careers as well as develop management skills. I hope North Shore will develop some technical programs and you may see me enroll in one of them. Good luck to all at North Shore. I was a disadvantaged student from the failed Revere School System and North Shore satisfied my goals as a student! (BT) Business Transfer: For me, the classes were not challenging enough. The teachers at NSCC are excellent. They take the time to do their job. This may already be in effect; but an effort should be made to stress the importance of employment direction. Specifically involving whether students may want a certificate in a trade or if they want to continue their education. If I could do it all again, I would have obtained a certificate in a medical field. ___________ classes in Basic Accounting 1 & 2 helped me pass a test to transfer credits in Financial Accounting at UNH at Durham. _________ curriculum and syllabus allowed for a smooth transfer of Business Law 1 to UNH as Mgt 647. I graduated from NSCC last year, and I loved the experience that I had in this school. I will finish my Bachelor’s degree from Suffolk University in May 2007. Overall, good experience but the only suggestion that I would make to NSCC is the academic faculty preparation. In terms of subject, some of them are over 60 and I love to share experience with them but it’s not what the real work place is about. Also, team work in college is very important. I would recommend some team project in major classes. (CD) CAD/CAM Certificate: Some teachers seem to be former High School Teachers. These teachers had to learn to stick to the schedule curriculum and teach even if some kids are just wisping through college. (CD) CAD/CAM Certificate: Excellent Experience……..Thank you……. (CF) Culinary Arts & Food Service: Having attended NSCC my life has improved. My understanding of myself and others has been enriched to unbelievable levels. I think I will return time to time to take some classes to continue my academic growth. (CJ) Criminal Justice: Overall, my experience at NSCC was positive. It allowed me to continue my education by transferring to UML. I assumed while at NSCC, that I was automatically part of a joint admissions program. I assumed transferring would be a breeze. However, I am planning to graduate UML in May, but my school gave me problems. I was told that five courses (lower level CJ electives) would not count toward my major as free electives. I now realize how difficult the transfer process can be. I also realize now that the joint admissions program is something that one must sign up for, rather than a program that the school is part of as a whole. I just think that there could be more information on the transfer process, and what it involves. Other that that, I have no complaints.

To be honest, I felt that North Shore Community College did not do the best job getting me ready for another college. My first year at Salem State was very rough. I felt lost in how much work I had to do. Although I truly loved all my teachers at North Shore I feel like it was a few more years of high school. North Shore Community College really set me on the right path. I matured quite a bit while attending North Shore and North Shore really enabled me to attend the college I am now attending. NSCC is a great school, with a competent staff. Thank you! I began NSCC not believing I would make it past the first semester. I was a high school dropout, so my confidence was very low regarding my academic future. I completed my associates in Criminal Justice. My GPA when I completed NSCC was 3.97. I was awarded a Foster Furcolo scholarship to UMass. I attribute all of this unexpected success to the staff and faculty. ____________ made the financial aspect very easy to deal with. Professors I had in my major were more passionate of their field than what I expected at NSCC. All I can say is NSCC helped me to achieve a dream after dropping out of high school. When I finish my undergraduate, I plan to go to law school. Thanks NSCC! The staff at North Shore is extremely knowledgeable in the subjects they teach!!! Just as much as Suffolk University. I would definitely recommend pushing service learning. I had a wonderful experience, and it helped guide me towards my career goals. I thank North Shore for getting me where I am today. I will be graduating with my B.S. May 2008. (CJ) Criminal Justice: North Shore Community College prepared me to take on any education challenge – I look forward to continuing my education with a real need for more challenges. The key to success is succeeding at what you may or may not attempt. (DV) Developmental Disabilities Case Worker Certificate: Have 099 class available on Saturday or after 3pm but before 7pm weekdays. Too tired to take classes later, work 40+ hours week and computer (basic, beginner) class is always at 12:30pm-1:45pm which I can’t get leave from work to attend. Therefore I can’t take first class I need before I can be ready for 100 series class. Thank You. Many semesters I checked for a different time frame but it never changes. There is only one time available. Please reward excellent faculty. Some are average teachers while others serve with distinction. I like teachers to know their ‘stuff’ and bring out the best effort and learning in their students. I had a wonderful experience learning and North Shore Community College. The tutors were very kind and patient, they took their time to explain and made sure I understood everything. Thanks to everyone at North Shore Community College for making my dreams come true. It was an over general good experience. I had all the help that I needed from good people like ___________ and ________. They were always there for me when ever I needed help and guidance. I am going to pursue my career in Nursing by taking the test to get into the NSCC Nursing program. With my experience with Developmental Disabilities, I believe I am ready. (EN) Engineering Science: I’m not sure why some people tend to underestimate community college. I had a great time at NSCC. My teachers were really knowledgeable and they were always ready to help. NSCC provided a great foundation for my continuing studies. (FS) Fire Science:

The Office of Personal and Advisors were very pleasant and provided assistance extremely well. Online classes were challenging and convenient. Instructors were well prepared and motivated. NSCC buildings were clean and well maintained. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at NSCC and constantly check NSCC-catalog to see if I can take other/new courses to add to my knowledge. (HA) Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation: Great Experiences, no complaints. NSCC gave me the tools and opportunities I needed to become the person I am today. I advocate in my community for members toward positive change, working with Neighbor to Neighbor to Neighbor - a social and economic grassroots political organization. Essentially returning to college as an adult learner, NSCC was nurturing, supportive and encouraging. Providing incentives to students to become civically engaged. There are so many ways that a student can apply themselves and learn to become pro-active in their lives concerning cities, towns, and government. The most important lesson I learned at NSCC was that of humanitarianism, which is lead by example from staff and faculty. My educational experience allowed me to want to pursue my educational future. The one comment I have that was not helpful was when I chose my electives, I was not given the guidance needed to prepare me for humanities. Therefore, if I had been sent to the transfer counselor prior to my graduation, I could have selected the appropriate electives required. That said, the classes I took were outstanding and I am not unhappy with my choice. Sociology, Criminology, Race, Class & Gender and Community Issues are all courses I am greatful for. Actually, I reflect back on much of what I learned through that course material at Lesley in my work. I recommend NSCC to everyone. Overall I enjoyed my experience at NSCC. _______________was especially helpful to me during my schooling. I feel I’m using a lot of my skills in my career as a Licensed Addictions Counselor I. I am truly thankful for my experience at NSCC. The education I received has changed me in many ways. I want to give special thanks to _________________ and all the teachers in the Drug and Alcohol program! My experience at NSCC was phenomenal. I wish other schools were just as accommodating and convenient. Actually, I think I was spoiled at NSCC and now I’m somewhat intimidated to move onto the next level. Maybe some preparation for the four year school could be helpful, and once again, thank you for a wonderful experience. I loved attending NSCC. It has prepared me for the career I have today and helped me grow as an individual. (HE) Early Childhood Education: I am satisfied with all the classes and faculty which I worked during the time I was in college. Thank you for helping me. More of the early education Courses should be at the Danvers College. Its hard for a lot of students to get to Lynn. Great help! I feel the EEC program at NSCC is wonderful. _________________ was amazing. The early childhood program at NSCC is first rate. I wish the majors had more classes directly in the field of study and fewer outside required. (HG) Gerontology: I have taken classes @ other colleges and found myself always heading back to NSCC. I am very proud to be able to say to people I am a North Shore Graduate and in due time will continue a higher education, due

36

to the wonderful experience I had@ this terrific learning center ( North Shore Community College). NSCC was a building block, especially for myself. (HL) Substance Abuse Certificate: I find myself unsatisfied with work because it is frustrating to deal with the population—Drug Addicts. This is something I didn’t anticipate from my studies. I also feel that many of the people I deal with do not share my enthusiasm for school and learning. I mean my co-workers. They are not educated and I feel they look at me as an outsider because of my education. This includes my program director. Finally, the pay puts me at a poverty level-$12.88/hour to manage young addicts is awful. I have to ask myself if I was totally uninformed or just had my head in the sand for my 21/2 years at NSCC. I wish it was driven home in no uncertain terms what I could expect for work and how much (little) I would earn. I’m disappointed, but I guess I should have been more careful. Thank you. You do an outstanding job. Great teachers. Very Nice Facilities. Very Helpful staff. I tell everybody about this school. It was one of the best ideas I ever made. I have recently decided to make a career change and will definitely be attending NSCC for that degree as well. (HM) Mental Health: I like to be graded on my merits too many teachers give passing grades for effort instead of substance and applied learning. I am afraid the next nurse or EMT mental health worker that serves me may not be qualified for the job. I don’t want and A, unless I truly deserve one. (HP) Paralegal: I loved my time at North Shore. ___________, ___________ and ________ were absolutely fabulous! Flexible to work with my life outside of school. My advisor was prompt, understanding, and friendly. She helped me complete school at my pace. (HS) Gerontology/Social Welfare: NSCC was a great school but I got the wrong impressions in the Gerontology field after graduating. I still didn’t no what I could do. (HS) Gerontology/Social Welfare: As a student in the Gerontology Program I am concerned there are not more students in this area of study given the Burgeoning need (75+ Million Baby Boomers). The college could really market this well to nursing and human service related students, to career changers ( Thru D.E.T) workforce training, and post career “early” retirees who want to make a contribution to positive aging (their own and others) as well as high school grades who can transition to Bachelor’s Degree. North Shore Community College website is out-dated for potential pay and career directions. Scars people away. (ID) Interdisciplinary: The educational experience was very great. However, the administrative part of the graduation was horrible. I did not receive an invitation to my own graduation, so I did not get to attend. Aside from that, I did not receive either one of my degrees that I earned due to unpaid classes. However, in my experience at North Shore the classes totaled over $20,000 of which Financial Aid helped me with most of. All I owed was $800, so I would have hoped that recognizing I needed financial help, they would have given me my degrees. I was very disappointed. (JC) Criminal Justice: Human resource department and Campus Police should be more responsible and not discriminate the job applicants with degree from NSCC if they come from minority groups. I was graduated and obtained

37

Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. I applied for campus police officer position, but they did not call me for interview and did not explain any reason why. (LA) Liberal Arts: If my previous education was even a residue of my education at NSCC, I would have never quit high school. I learned more about myself, most importantly was the fact that I can learn. My disabilities were never picked up and I was pushed through the grades, which left me feeling inadequate. It was here at NSCC some instructors took the time and brought me up to speed. There were wonderful, supportive teachers. And at the writing Lab women who were instrumental in my education. Women who are deeply committed and passionate about helping students to achieve. I wouldn’t have made it through without the caring support I received at this school. These women and teachers have thought me education does not have to be and endurance test. That is why I am volunteering at the writing lab until September and hopefully I can take some classes at NSCC. I will be attending Lesley College. Forever grateful. Going to school at night was at times very challenging. I kept plugging along and would like to suggest that courses be offered at Danvers and Lynn (same courses) at night. There were semesters that I would have liked to take a certain class but the class was not available at night at Danvers. I had a very positive experience attending NSCC. The majority of faculty was excellent, as well as advisors, help etc. After a much needed break, I will enroll at Salem State. Thank you. My educational experience was overall very good. North Shore Community College gave me a starting point with college level courses that is totally different from high school. All my teachers were very helpful to me. When I went to see them when problems aroused they all set aside time to help me with the problem regarding the class. I appreciate them all. I am 42 years old – career change. All of the human services classes were in Lynn. So I majored in Liberal Arts. The transfer process is HORRIBLE at SSC! I challenged out of Computers and SSC will not accept the credits! I took 2 Lits and the registrar recognizes only 1. There has to be more collaboration with transfer institutions – recognizing the equivalency of classes from NSCC. I was unable to take human service classes, but I am happy to have the much needed Liberal Arts background. I am finding NSCC more technically advanced and user friendly for registration and all IT functions over SSC! I intend to take more electives at NSCC not offered at Salem State. Salem State is the problem – NSCC really sets the bar high. It is a let down to be a Salem State and their systems. I took ecology online. Blackboard always had a problem and I would get knocked off during a test. Professor ________ would reset it once, but the tests were in 2 parts multi-choice and essay. Each test I got knocked off line in one of the 2 parts and the professor would not reset the test for me to do both parts. In the end, I would get grades like 60 because I was only allowed to take half the test. I love biology and got an A in BIO101 and microbiology and all my tests were in the 90’s. The one test she allowed us to make up I got a 98 on. The professor was also gone in the beginning of class to visit her new grandbaby in California which set the class back in time. It was frustrating to start a class by falling behind. Also, I sent her 4 labs she kept saying she did not receive so I put hard copies in her mail box. She only graded one because she said they were late, and she wasn’t sure when I sent them because her computer had crashed. I spent many hours on those labs. By not accepting all 4 labs and not allowing me to complete tests, this was the first time my grade and GPA was effected because of technical programs not my skills and that still really bothers me. I was graded lower than usual and I find it quite unfair. You need to add more clubs/activity programs. In between classes I felt really bored and I found nothing of interest going on around campus. You should take a cue from Salem State College and have something like an International Student Association. The clubs you had only allowed those of a specific type, so why not have a club that invites everyone from all parts of the world. I wish NSCC was a four year college. I feel that my time at North Shore was better spent and more enriching than the school I am attending now. The financial process is so much smoother at North Shore! And I suppose it’s true absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Attending NSCC was probably the best academic move I have ever made. It allowed me to learn the curriculum and also about myself. I had excellent experiences with the teachers, most notably with ___ ____________. I also want to mention that the newer campus in Danvers is a great facility. The classrooms are designed very well, and the building is set up in a well organized fashion. I had such a good experience obtaining my Associate’s Degree that I would pursue further education at NSCC. I would like to thank everyone at NSCC for helping me achieve my goals. I was already employed full time while attending NSCC. I achieved my associates degree, after which I was eligible for a supervisory position within the same company. I am currently the supervisor for the Quality Control department. My experience at NSCC changed my life. I began school for personal growth and ended up with an Associate’s degree and am now pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. I learned about time management and discovered I had a love of learning. I was academically challenged but had exceptional teachers and a ready tutoring lab to help overcome obstacles. I received merit scholarships and got a part time job that helped me decide the area of study I wished to pursue. My experience at NSCC fully prepared me for higher education, and now I am rising to the challenges of a university degree. If it had not been for a positive and supportive experience I had at NSCC, I would not have felt I had the skills necessary to approach higher education. For a student who returns to school after an extended absence, the cost, the location, and the approach and supportive network of other women in the Women in Transition program helped my success. I am truly grateful. I thought North Shore was a great school. It has a wide variety of classes to make your career choice easier. _______________________ is the reason I passed statistics. She’s the best! (LF) Law Enforcement Certificate: I found my experience with North Shore Community College very challenging and enjoyable. I received an Associates Degree and a professional certificate from North Shore Community College. I believe that North Shore Community College has played a major role in my success as I have held three jobs in my related field of study. Thank you NSCC. (LS) Legal Administrative Assistant: Evening course parking in Lynn is scary. (MT) Medical Transcriptionist Certificate: I found my classes to be mostly good. I did have a few teachers especially in the night class that was awful. Instead of teaching us basics, we were taught “her way” in her field. I felt I learned nothing from her class or experience. (NE) Nurse Education: Dear Friends, I had a very positive experience in the Nurse Education program. I now work the shifts that I hoped for at Beverly Hospital. I love my job and plan to return to school to get my BSN! I plan to take statistics, nutrition and pharmacology at NSCC. During our clinical placements Melrose Wakefield’s maternity rotation and Lynn Community Health were the only weak links. (_________ and ________ were wonderful) There wasn’t enough to do at LCHC and Melrose made it clear they didn’t want students in postpartum and L&D. Kindred should be used for second year students. Beverly loves students and should be used as much as possible. I would love to talk with any discouraged nursing students who may be struggling. The last semester seemed impossible to complete but with reassurance and proper study skills it can be done! NLN’s should support student nurses. Nursing instructors used the same lectures year after year as a static profession the lectures should be updated appropriately. When compared to nursing schools/students in Boston we were behind in learning

resume process and applying for jobs. My job was solely obtained due to the fact I had previously worked at that hospital. There was no assistance in job placement. Overall, I am truly impressed with NSCC. I am an RN. It was difficult finding a position as a new graduate and feel I was misinformed in the job placement area. It was difficult, but once I obtained a job, I was prepared because of my education at NSCC. From taking the R.N. boards to patient care, NSCC taught me well. The only suggestion I have is to enhance the learning environment. The nursing classroom is horrible. No windows, no ventilation, no motivation to stay awake. NSCC definitely needs to renovate the health care building. I feel my clinical training in Nursing could/should have been turned up a notch or 2. I found myself lacking in some of the basic nursing skills when I began working as a nurse. For example: in med/surg I had more than enough opportunities to change bedpans and wipe butts.- But I had too few opportunities to start IV’s , meds or place catheters. The Nursing Program at NSCC is excellent!! The faculty and clinical internship locations were instrumental in providing a top-notch education. Tuition is incredibly reasonable and allowed me to return to college to pursue a second career. It would be very helpful if the portion of resume writing and job fairs/career placement help would start sooner as other Nursing programs already had interviews before we even got to the resume class. (NE) Nursing Education: Your Nursing Education staff is very inappropriate and disrespectful to adults transitioning into the nursing profession. I repeatedly witnessed students being belittled and verbally abused by bitter, unsophisticated, and unprofessional clinical instructors. _________________and ________________________ come to my mind as the stand-out exception to my above comments. (OT) Occupational Therapy Assistant: I can’t say enough positive words to describe the educational experience I had at NSCC. As an older person deciding to return to school to obtain a degree after a divorce, I never once regretted my decision to go to NSCC. The staff was highly accessible, encouraging and extremely knowledgeable in the area of study I chose (OTA Program). ___________ is a true Professional, as are all your staff in the OTA Program. The knowledge I obtained through this program of study enabled me to find a job that is so rewarding! It has opened up a door of financial independence that I never even dreamed would be possible. I grew in my knowledge and I also grew as a person due to the experience I had as a student at NSCC. I drove 11/2 each way 4-5 days a week to attend NSCC for 2 years. It was worth it and I would do it again. The OTA Program at NSCC is excellent. All the instructors are truly professional with much experience. I will always remember NSCC fondly. The OTA Program was amazing and I loved being a part of it. I have taken so much knowledge away with me. The teachers are gifted and challenging. Thank you! One professor was not a clear, prepared, understanding or easy to talk to as the other professors in the OTA program. _____________ was scattered and hard to follow. The rest of the professors and courses were great!

Previous to attending NSCC, I attended 2 large State universities. Namely Salem State and the University of Georgia. My experience at NSCC was remarkably better than the larger 2 schools. From the financial aid process to the class registration, the process was simple, student focused and efficient. Additionally, there were always staff available for polite assistance. I was quite surprised when I found my courses to be more intellectually challenging and time consuming at NSCC than the larger 2 universities that had higher entrance requirements. Furthermore, the quality of education at NSCC was far superior to that of the University of Georgia. I especially appreciated the small classrooms. Professor ________ of A&P and ________ from the OTA program were 2 of my finest instructors. I learned more from the 2 of them than any other teacher/professor in my collegiate career. I was very happy with all of the faculty in my major (OTA). I was not happy with my AP course at NSCC. Teacher was very hard to follow. I would not recommend that class/instructor to anyone. (PH) Pharmacy Technician Certificate: Not enough reason was given to me for the reason I was not hired by the place when I completed by Pharmacy Tech internship. Even though I successfully completed and graduated from the program with honors, I suspect it was my age (55) and veteran status (Vietnam). (PN) Practical Nursing: The Practical Nursing Program is excellent! It was very tough to get through, but I feel that it prepared me very well. Also I want to give special thank you to _______ in Career Placement. She is an amazing person! Her enthusiasm and encouragement helped me to pursue the specialty I really wanted. She encouraged me to embrace my individuality and not follow the crowd! The staff at the tutoring center at our campus (Essex Aggie) were also excellent. Sally was especially supportive and encouraging. (PT) Physical Therapist Assistant Some teachers were very good, some very bad. I was an A student with both good and bad. (RT) Radiologic Technology: The college health plan is an abomination- it cost little and covers even less. The credit transfer process is unnecessarily cumbersome and tedious. I did not learn until my last semester whether or not some credits would transfer. An Associate’s Degree should be more vocational in nature- fewer credits to completion and fewer nonsensical course requirements. Attending NSCC was one of the best choices I made for my academic career. The staff truly want you to succeed and help you to achieve that goal. I would recommend NSCC to anyone who wants to continue their education. I would like to thank the staff for all their hard work. (RT) Radiologic Technology: I completed the Rad Tech. program last May. ___________________and__________________ are a great team. They get to the point in their teachings, and are always available for help. Basically they have put together a wonderful program that has provided me with the skills needed to work at a busy hospital in Boston. (ST) Surgical Technology Certificate: My only problem was with the poor classroom facilities offered. My main classes were in the run down Essex Aggie building. Maybe the Surgical course could be a two year program. Some feel it very hard and we would get more experience by going two years. In New Hampshire, it’s a two year course. Otherwise, I loved it.

(TE) Teacher Aide Certificate: Well my spelling did not change a little. I think you need to teach student more technique for learning to spell. Some of the teachers were very friendly, I enjoyed Project Enable but I think GED Students should not have to pay if they had their degree with NSCC. People who do not receive financial aid should get some course free if they keep their GPA score up high. You give us teacher to help you pick classes, but it always take time to talk to them or they just don’t give you enough time to discuss your plan or how they can help you. Also my course for my certification no one help me apply for my certificate. I loved my experiences at North Shore Community College. They were very rewarding good or bad. The bad I took as life lessons not a sign of failure. After I receive my first Associate’s Degree, I plan on enrolling in another associate program. Due to early life events I started college in my later years, but I am sure glad I did, it has been a wonderful and rewarding experience for myself and my family!! Thank you North Shore Community College. (TM) Travel and Tourism: I would have continued my Nurse Education at NSCC, but they did not have a January enrollment. I am older and did not want to wait 6 months to begin Nursing School. I’ve been accepted into the Social Welfare/Gerontology Associate’s degree program at NSCC which I plan to enter in September 2007. (TTN) Telecommunications Technology/NYNEX: I really enjoyed my four years at NSCC. I feel that the college experience has rejuvenated my desire for learning and given me the additional confidence to set goals that are not only challenging but realistic. The faculty that I had the pleasure of meeting are all wonderful, sincere and dedicated to what they are trying to accomplish. I would not hesitate to attend NSCC in the future. (TRT) Career Transfer/Tech Prep Option: I think teachers should spend more time with the students because not every students have the same learning skills. Some are fast learners and some are slow learners. With more time, there will be very smart students in school. (VT) Veterinary Technology: I enjoyed my overall experience. I would suggest that equipment for the Vet Tech courses held at the Aggie campus be upgraded to something that we will find in the field. The microscopes are VERY outdated and made lab work difficult at best. The large animal equipment also needs repair and upgrading. All/most of the buildings that the Vet Tech students learn in are in need of major repairs. The dog grooming building is disgusting and no one should be forced to learn “hospital procedures” in a place like that. On the first day of class, we were asked to “clean up the place.” I spent that class cleaning rat shit from closets and spider webs from the ceilings. __________ is a great teacher. She really knows her stuff. (WH) Wellness and the Healing Arts: When I first enrolled in the Wellness and Healing program at North Shore I had no idea what to expect. It was my first year of attending college after dropping out of high school and receiving my GED. Since my academic record through out high school were not in good standing I felt as if I had to start all over again if I were to achieve exactly what it was that I wanted in a professional career. As it turned out, the experiences I’ve had thus far at NSCC has proved to be among the best in my life. North Shore has enabled me to go above and beyond in every area of my life. Without the self-confidence I have attained through school I’m afraid I would have given up. Everything about North Shore; from the teachers, to the advisors, the administration, the student body-have helped inspire me more towards the many passions and dramas that I had kept confined all these years out of fear and uncertainty. Although I have enjoyed the variety and content of the “Wellness and Healing Arts” certificate program, I was disappointed in finding out as I was already in the thick of the program to find, that this certificate

would not really be practical for finding paying work in the real world (unless you want to work in a health food store – not a good use of college money). Or that this program is more geared to those who are already in the health care professions such as Nursing, etc.. Maybe also geared to body workers such as masseuses and estheticians to help them expand on what they already do. In most of your programs that are certified for a particular profession such as graphic design or floral designer, students are usually able to find paying work in the field that they have received certification in. I strongly feel that either “Wellness and the Healing Arts” needs to be redesignated as an enrichment program or be a part of another degree/ certificate program such as psychology/social work, healthcare/nursing and/or business in order to remain a viable useful program. Thank you for your time. (ZAT) Aesthetics and Skin Care: I graduated with a certificate in Esthetics. I found my passion. I love the field. My instructor ___________ was amazing. Her knowledge in the industry is indescribable. I feel I got a better education than students at Elizabeth Grady and Catherine Hinds. __________ was enthusiastic, had a great attitude, fabulous teaching styles, and was understanding yet firm. I feel blessed to have gotten so lucky to have such a great instructor in a field that is so misunderstood. (ZAT) Aesthetics and Skin Care: The teachers I had played favorites with certain students in other word had teacher’s pets. She also said she only helps certain students get jobs – in other words refer them to business. It was aesthetics class of 2006 I would of probably went to the extension of this class but I’m almost sure that she was going to be the teacher. So I did not bother to go!!! I hope this teacher gets reprimanded!!! I graduated in 2006 from the Esthetics 300 hour program. _________ was awesome!! She’s a great teacher and she really prepared me for the working world in Esthetics. I do thing that there should have been more support for job placement. (ZCM) Cosmetology: Really loved school. My teachers were excellent and I’m happy to work in the field for which I attended school for.
