From the Desk of Jenn Zenn

Las Vegas is a city in constant motion. Our town has been through some of the most infl uential and consistent change in every industry from entertainment, to fi ne dining, real estate, and more. Las Vegans are always on the lookout for the most remarkable ways to make local living the best that it can be. As the new

Managing Editor of MYVEGAS Magazine, I am honored to be a part of such an exciting publication, and an equally intriguing community.

In the Vegas valley, we experience seasonal shifts in unique ways. Falling leaves and dropping temperatures translate to shorter days and football season! Fall always means back to school for kids, and busy parents get a chance to indulge in some of the perks of autumn activities. In this edition of MYVEGAS Magazine, we are pleased to bring you the returning feature “From the Mayor’s Desk”, where Mayor Carolyn Goodman tackles questions and ideas as they pertain directly to you, our loyal readers. Keeping the focus on Las Vegas living, we have selected cover features that spotlight local entertainers and business owners. Also in this issue, our “Readers Choice” highlights some of the most delectable dining and fi ne restaurants in town. Keeping our fi nger on the pulse of what locals love, is what MYVEGAS is all about!

It has been a delight working closely with our team to put this issue together, and I hope that you enjoy it! I encourage your feedback, so please feel free to contact me with comments, questions or ideas at [email protected]. Make sure to check our website for upcoming events and announcements.

Enjoy and Be Well!

Q: Mayor, are you glad to see the return of Wet ‘n’ Wild water park? In your opinion, how do you feel this local Las Vegas attraction will add to the community?

A: I’m always pleased to see new attractions in Las Vegas that not only benefi t the nearly 40 million tourists who visit annually, but also are developed with our residents in mind. Wet ‘n’ Wild has already proven to be more than a very popular draw and is a great place for having fun. I also look forward to Cowabunga Bay opening and being a great place for families to cool off. Now that we are returning to a healthier economy, businesses are opening which offer new activities, new services and a variety of goods that enhance the quality of life in the city.

Q: What are your thoughts on salvaging local Las Vegas landmark venues, such as The Huntridge Theater?

A: For many years we seem to have been bent on imploding our past in Las Vegas in order to reinvent ourselves to continue to attract tourists. Fortunately we’re growing up, and we’ve learned to value our history. We’ve established a commission to work with the city to save historic and landmark properties. A few of these that we’ve already salvaged: a turn-of-the-century railroad cottage (relocated to the Springs Preserve), the Morelli House and the old downtown post offi ce and federal courthouse now housing the Mob Museum. Also saved, have been many of our iconic neon signs which are housed in the Neon Museum. There is an ambitious group of residents who are passionate about preserving the Huntridge Theatre for our city. The Huntridge is one of the few movie and entertainment homes from the 1950s. What a wonderful initiative this is, and I hope they will be successful!

Q: I am looking for some fun ideas to share with my kids for Halloween this

year. Aside from trick-or-treating, do you have any suggestions for family-friendly holiday fun? Also, do you dress up in costume for Halloween?

A: I love Halloween, and love to stay home to greet trick or treaters – even when our four children were young we stayed home. To this day I always dress up for opening the front door, most often to be scary, usually with scary music playing in the background and lights inside dim or off! Usually I’m a witch or a scary creature, and everyone who comes to our home has to earn their treat – they have to sing, dance, recite something or entertain us! For those who won’t, no treat. As for suggestions of what to do going out: there are a lot of fun family events in the city in the fall. One is the “Trunk or

Treat” that takes place annually at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, located at 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive. This event combines trick-or-treating with a classic car show and everyone really gets into the spirit. There are fun and games for the whole family. For more information you can contact the center at 702-229-1100. Too, the libraries and YMCA’s are great venues, but you have to check each year if they are having Halloween activities. MV

A special thank you to the Honorable Mayor Carolyn Goodman for her willingness to engage with the readers of MYVEGAS Magazine and the community of Las Vegas! Please email your questions to: [email protected] for a chance to have your questions answered in a future issue of MYVEGAS Magazine

Noah’s Animal House at The Shade Tree has been a great solution for hundreds of families with pets since 2007. The Shade Tree is the fi rst shelter in the West to have an on-site animal sanctuary for pets

of sheltered women and children in crisis. Every day, women, children, and their pets arrive seeking safe shelter. From the very fi rst day Noah’s Animal House opened, children that are able to bring their dog, guinea pig, parrot, or kitty feel better about their future.

The challenge children face is more than we can imagine. They leave everything behind to come into a shelter. Before arriving, they imagined a day when the fear would end. They hope for the time when everybody will be safe. To come to the shelter with their furry best friend, is the miracle they needed. They are delighted to be able to walk their dog or sit in the cuddle room and snuggle their kitten.

During one holiday season, a boy brought his fi sh tank with a beautiful blue fi sh in it. The next day the tank had a little red plastic ball and a Christmas tree in it. The 9 year old announced, “My fi sh needs toys too!” Mothers of the children

feel relief that is indescribable. To escape danger is a huge fi rst step, but to be able to help their child feel hopeful is deeply reassuring. She is on the right path and can focus on their future.

One of the recent arrivals was a family of kitties. This trio stole everyone’s heart when they entered and became the greeting party to all newcomers. They came from an abusive home, but immediately settled into their “home away from home”. The young pets were due for their vaccinations and were able to receive their care in the on-site clinic. The services are free and this is a critical part of the success of many of Las Vegas’ women and children fl eeing violence. Now that these

kittens are safe, their favorite spot to spend time in is a Cuddle Room pouncing on toys and playing on the cat tree.

Noah’s Animal House is completely donor supported and a model of success for saving the lives of animals while the owners break free from danger and move forward in safety.

Image is everything. In today’s fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements and promotions for every conceivable

product and service. As people teeter on the brink of information overload and try to stay afl oat in an ocean of choices, how does a business stand out from the crowd?

It comes down to branding. Now more than ever, your company’s brand is vital to your business’ success. For most small businesses and startups, branding is one of most important, yet overlooked aspects of the company’ business plan.

In the minds of customers and potential customers, your brand is what differentiates you from your competition. Brand recognition is a major part in securing your customers and how they associate with you. If your brand is well defi ned and easily recognizable, it will be remembered and there is a much higher rate of converting viewers into loyal customers.

WHAT IS BRANDING?In simple terms, branding is your

company image. This is far larger than just your logo. The way your phone is answered, how employees dress, customer service and response time combined with brand collateral are

the building blocks of a good brand. It is deeper than just an appearance; it is the feeling that someone gets when they hear your company’s name or sees your logo. Branding connects with your audience and helps form an emotional bond. With that bond comes loyalty.

Branding helps new businesses that have the talent, product or service; but lack the reputation of a more seasoned company get a solid foundation to build upon. In layman’s terms, “fake it ‘til they make it.” For an established company it bolsters their credibility.

Here are a few tips that can help you in your marketing strategy:

1. Choose a name. Select one that is timeless and meaningful. Don’t get caught up in being clever, cool or trendy. Target a name that’s easy to remember and gives an idea of what you offer.

2. Create a voice. Companies have personality, customers make their initial choice by what they know or hear about your company. Make sure this voice is accurate with your core policies. If your company is a law fi rm, be confi dent and professional or if a toy store, keep it fun and

friendly Any persona that fi ts can work; just keep it consistent.

3. Create a strong logo and use it. The visual impact of your logo is helping build brand recognition. If consumers are able to recognize your brand at a glance, you are likely to get noticed and be remembered.

4. Listen. Pay attention to what you hear about your brand, image or marketing campaign. If something is working, try to understand why and make it even better. If you consistently hear something negative, then change is necessary.

5. Be consistent. A company logo, its collateral or even its voice is not a brand alone. All of them work together to create your brand. Yes, you will make changes as you grow; but always strive to keep a consistent image. MV

Since the real estate bubble popped in recent years, short sales have become routine in Southern Nevada. Banks appear

eager to avoid the expensive and timely foreclosure process, by offering other options to homeowners who are seeking some fi nancial relief for their underwater mortgages. While a short sale can be a long and frustrating ordeal, the end result is really a win-win for both the bank and borrower. After a short sale, the seller is no longer plagued with debt, the buyer gets the property at market value, and the bank can avoid the time and costs of a foreclosure.

Whether you are a seller or a buyer, there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering a short sale:

1 SELLER BEWARE: Under Nevada law, a short sale bank may be able

to pursue a defi ciency judgment against you for the balance owed after receiving the proceeds from a short sale. When looking into a short sale, it is important that you hire the right professionals to guide you through the process. In many cases, borrowers may need both a realtor and a lawyer to guide them through approval and closing of the short sale.

2 GET THE LENDERS ON BOARD: In order to sell a property in a short

sale, the participation of your lender(s) is required. Your primary mortgage holds the senior lien on the property and must be satisfi ed in order to close with clean title. Many homeowners in Southern Nevada also have a junior lien or home equity line of credit (“HELOC”). In such a scenario, both your fi rst and second, or HELOC, must approve the sale of the property.

3 BUYER BEWARE: A buyer of a short sale property must have

patience. While many buyers are

10 Important Things to Know About Short Sales

eager to close on a property rather quickly, the short sale process can take several months. As a buyer, however, a short sale property may be more attractive than one that was foreclosed. Many times a short sale home is still occupied by the owner and is in relatively good repair. However, it is still wise to view the property prior to making an offer, and conducting a thorough home inspection prior to closing. The majority of short sales are listed “as-is,” so you can’t ask the seller to repair any damage. It may still be a deal, but you need to know what you’re getting into.

4 LENDER ADVANTAGE: A short sale is often a win for the lender

in the end. Foreclosure can be expensive, and a short sale can help the bank save money on the property. If the bank forecloses, it has to pay to evict the tenant, maintain the house and pay any taxes until the house sells; the property becomes a liability. Accepting a short sale also allows the bank to remove the loan from its books much sooner than a foreclosure. A short sale can make the best of a bad situation for the bank.

5 AVOID BANKRUPTCY: For many people in Southern Nevada, their

mortgage is their only debt creating diffi culty for the fi nancial situation. Many people may be able to avoid fi ling a bankruptcy as a result of a properly executed short sale. It is important to meet with an experienced professional to learn about your options.

6 FRUSTRATION FACTOR: As both the buyer and seller, remember to

stay calm and not allow the process to frustrate you. For both the buyer and the seller, the lengthy short sale process can become very frustrating, however

it is important to remember to end goal. For the buyer, the end goal is buying a property at great price. For the seller, the end goal is satisfying the mortgage debt with limited liability. While it may seem easy to just throw in the towel, it is important to take deep breaths and remain patient.

7 WORK WITH EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS: When listing

your property for a short sale, it is extremely important that you work with a team of individuals that have knowledge of the short sale process. Oftentimes, a short sale can be denied simply because a document was either fi lled out incorrectly, or not provided to the bank timely. Working with inexperienced people can cost you both time and money. It is recommended that you seek both an attorney and a real estate agent when considering a short sale.

8 ELIGIBILITY: In order to qualify for a short sale, there are certain

eligibility factors the bank will consider:

• You must have an upside down mortgage, meaning you owe more than your home is worth; and

• You should be able to demonstrate some sort of hardship (i.e. divorce, unemployment, relocation, military deployment, illness, etc.);

Your lender will also require that you provide documentation relative

to your hardship and request for a short sale.

9 LONG CLOSING TIME: From the time a short sale offer is

submitted to a bank to the time the sale closes is not very short at all. The term “Short sale”, unfortunately

doesn’t refer to the length of time it takes to close the sale, but rather

the short pay off of the existing loan(s). In considering the

borrower for a short sale, the bank must review all of their hardship materials, order an appraisal on the home, and gain approval from the investor and/or mortgage insurance provider on the loan. This process can take several months, if not longer, to complete.

10 SHORT SALE vs. FORECLOSURE: A short sale is

not the same thing as a foreclosure. As opposed to the foreclosure process, the homeowner is very much involved in a short sale. In fact, homeowners who decide to short sell are usually trying to avoid foreclosure by working out a deal with the bank. For the seller, a short sale doesn›t impact your credit in the same way that a foreclosure would. It›s still a black mark on your credit score, but it doesn›t damage your credit for as long. With a short sale, you can take out another home loan in as little as two years. MV

How ready are you for retirement? If you are thirty-something, the answer is that you probably aren’t ready yet! Let’s face it, thirty-something’s have had it tough when it comes to making smart and effective fi nancial decisions. We’ve already lived through

two recessions during our prime career building years. When you throw in marriage, kids, mortgages and other pressing money matters, many people between the ages of 29-37 say they are further behind than they thought they’d be at this stage in their lives.

To further this point, a study by The Urban Institute found individuals between 29 and 37 actually saw their wealth drop by 21 percent between 1983 and 2010. Conversely, folks who are just a few years older (over 38 years old) actually saw their fi nances improve during that same time period.

So what is a thirty-something in Las Vegas to do?

We don’t have a strong job market at the moment, and that dream job with an even better salary may not be around the corner. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t transform your thirties from lean times, to thriving ones. The key is to start saving now. The sooner you start, the more you can accomplish in a shorter amount of time. Even if you have to start small, the idea is, to start soon!

If you save $2000.00 a year starting at age 30 in an account with an 8 percent return, you’d have $400,000 by the time you are 67 years old. And, the best news of all is that you have about 30 more years to prepare for retirement!

So, no matter what your job status or debt level is, start saving now. If you are working, take advantage of your employers retirement plan and make sure you are contributing enough to participate in any match programs that they offer.

I am a thirty-something, and I am taking this advice for myself. I don’t want my “golden years” to feel like “poverty years”! MV

Life can be complicated. From marriages, divorces, children, stepchildren, business partners, aging parents… These are issues

that impact many of us today, and sadly, death, and end of life issues can be even more complicated due to these circumstances. Given that accidents are the leading cause of death, the sudden onset of the need to be prepared; predetermined, or lack thereof, can further complicate things. I have been in the unlucky, not prepared for, position during the sudden loss of two immediate family members. Facing decisions in times of compromise and crisis is not optimal for anyone. The best we can do

as individuals responsible for the legal decisions of others, as may be the case in various situations, is to have the basic legal documents updated on our behalf and accessible for our loved ones. This allows the focus to be on good byes and memories not on weighty decisions. There is an adage many attorneys know, that was shared with me by my mother’s attorney after the loss of my mother, “There is nothing like the three D’s that cause strife and havoc in otherwise normal families: death, divorce, dissolution of a business.” Updated legal documents, clear communication with family members or executors, and a relationship with the right attorney for you and your family is

your best game plan to avoid unnecessary, additional negative experiences during times of loss. The right legal documents for your needs established with the right lawyer, right now is a vital investment in your and your heirs’ future. It also gives incredible peace of mind.

So what are the right basic legal documents everyone should have whom have assets or a family? I posed this question to local attorney, John G. Gubler. John has over 30 plus years of experience in wills, trusts, guardianships, and probate. But aside from his experience he and his team exemplify commitment to community.

My favorite attribute of John’s is his ability to listen to the individual needs. Visit the State Bar of Nevada website. The State Bar is a mandatory Bar, which means to practice law in Nevada, you must register and obtain a license number through the Nevada State Bar Association.

The Clark County Bar Association is an optional Membership association that any attorney, with a state bar number, active or inactive, can join. During my tenure there, I developed the website: clarkcountylawyerfi nder.com as another option for consumers to fi nd the right attorney.

As a Human Resources professional, I am often asked questions about the employment process. These are

a list of the fi ve most popular questions asked, along with my recommendations for the best answers to give:

Q: I was just offered a position contingent upon passing my background and drug test. Should I put in my two week notice at my current job?

A: Unless it is an offi cial offer, I would recommend waiting until the background and drug test is clear. Many employers have different requirements and it is always best to wait to give notice until you are absolutely sure there is an offi cial offer.

Q: Is it illegal for a future employer to look up my social media accounts when applying for a job?

A: My advice is to keep your profi le on a private setting. I know several employers who have admitted to checking profi les prior to hiring the person. If a future employer asks for your passwords, I would recommend that you see a legal

professional to fi nd out more information on how you can protect your privacy.

Q: I had an amazing interview at a major casino and they said they would contact me in two weeks to let me know if I am going to get an offer. It has been two weeks, should I call to follow-up?

A: Many of the larger properties receive up to 500+ applications for every position. Could you imagine if every applicant called to follow up? The employer would run out of time with just answering application calls throughout the day! If an employer wants to hire you, they will. It is much harder to lose an application or misplace a phone number with the advent of recent technology. Could it take more than two weeks? Absolutely.

Q: Is it acceptable to ask about the salary during my interview?

A: Most managers would advise that asking about salary is a major no-no. The truth is that it is pointless to go through the entire process only to fi nd out the salary is nowhere near your expectation. Although I would not advise asking this

question, I would suggest conducting as much research as possible to get the answer on your own. There are many websites and willing people that could obtain details about that specifi c job.

Q: Although I am looking for a manager position and have prior management experience in this specifi c fi eld, should I take an entry level position to get in the door?

A: If you are an experienced manager and can fi nancially afford to do so, I would recommend that you wait until you fi nd a position that suits your qualifi cations. Although the getting in the door idea sounds good, it can be diffi cult to move up and may take some time. Most experienced managers may get bored of the entry-level position within a matter of months. It is unfair to you and the employer if you are always searching for the next big job. MV

Generation after generation, parents have taught their children to prepare for college early, which often means in

elementary school (or earlier).

Can you afford the college that will give them the best chance in life? Will paying for their education force you to have to work well into your golden years? These questions are commonly asked of modern-day parents. However, many parents don’t know how to begin answering these questions; they are afraid of walking into a fi nancial situation that they won’t be able to safely walk out of. The alternative – saddling their children with debt well into their 30s and 40s – is not an appealing one.

The following trends are becoming disturbingly common in the challenge of paying for a college education:

The net worth of today’s 30-somethings: Adults in their 30s have 21 percent less net worth than 30-somethings 30 years ago, according to a new Urban Institute report. Why? Much of it has to do with high-interest student loans and credit card debt. The return on investment of a college education is excellent – college grads earn 84 percent more than those with only a high school diploma. But paying off that investment without outside help is exceedingly burdensome for a graduate.

Student loan debt is even greater than credit card debt: That’s right – topping all Americans who have made poor decisions with their credit cards are ambitious high school graduates, whose collective student load debt shoots past $1 trillion! More important than this being a crucial social epidemic, it’s potentially a very real problem for your child. President Obama scored some political points in identifying with most Americans when he said his student load debt was paid off only after he was elected to the U.S. Senate. Two-thirds of students leave college with some form of debt, according to the Federal Reserve Bank.

Fluctuating interest rates: Recent controversy over federal Stafford loans interest rates adds to the insecurity of borrowing as a college fi nancing strategy. Given the unpredictability of Congress, one can’t reliably predict whether interest rates will rise or fall.

Your children cannot refi nance their loans: While a borrower who has racked up tens of thousands of dollars in gambling debt can refi nance their payments, student loans remain at fi xed rates. In collecting money on student loans, there is no statute of limitation, and today it’s very common – the norm, actually – for student loan holders to take nearly two decades to pay off their debt. With the annual average cost of public universities exceeding $22,000 per year, and the same annual costs often surpassing $50,000 at private universities, it’s no surprise. MV

Fall is here bringing shorter days, and cooler nights. Children go back to school. Las Vegans can fi nally cook meals on

the barbecue without getting cooked themselves. Parents of school-aged children seem happy. After all, kids are back in school.

Going back to school is exciting for kids and stressful on parents. Students reunite with old friends while parents get a long list of school supplies including backpacks, clothes, shoes, lunch money or the makings for lunch. So many things to buy in such short order is not so easy on the pocketbook.

So, after we’ve settled into fall, with homework, youth sports and school conferences, families can enjoy some fun excursions in Las Vegas. If you are newly partnered or experienced empty nesters, Las Vegas is a city that truly has it all.

There are plenty of parks, museums, and interesting things to do. Wet ‘n Wild stays open until September 29th. Red Rock Canyon is always a great place to go for hiking. Just remember to bring water, hiking boots, and a camera. The Discovery Center offers nine interactive exhibits. The Smith Center

has wonderful musical and dramatic presentations for their fall season.

Fall also brings football weekends and baseball playoffs. If you want to stay home, games are televised on weekend mornings and can go on into the night. If you want to get out, local or Strip casinos can be great places to enjoy the ritual of absorbing beer while in turn, getting absorbed by the game!

The availability of all these games sometimes raises a little contention between sports fans and their disinterested partners. Many men can’t get enough football, and some women love it too. Others love it for different reasons. Sunday and Monday football are the perfect time to get out for some personal shopping while the sports fans stay glued to the tube. After all, lots of sales are going on during that time. Interestingly enough, higher-end retailers do quite well during this time. Perhaps this season is the reason credit cards were really invented?

October ends with Halloween, an occasion for kids to magically transform into popular characters like Winnie the Pooh, Casper, Cinderella, Darth Vader, Superman, Godzilla, or whatever they

imagine. Nowadays, the adults celebrate Halloween just as much as the kids. Mom and Dad may go dressed as the 99 percenters, 1 percenters, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Tonto, The Lone Ranger, or Sonny and Cher. Costumes can be expensive not to mention purchasing candy for an entire neighborhood.

Fall ends at Thanksgiving, a holiday that is generally spent at home with turkey, dressing, potatoes, beans, biscuits, congealed salads, and pumpkin pie. The following day is Black Friday, when folks hit the stores in droves for the best deals of the year. Food, clothes, electronics, housewares, toys- everything seems to go on sale Thanksgiving weekend. Fall closes with a four-day holiday food fest that mounts to a lot of dough.

Fall is a pleasant season, but there’s just one thing about fall that isn’t so pleasant: fall costs a lot of money! MV

MV

Have a thorough neuro-muscular-skeletal exam done. A veterinary chiropractor can examine a pet’s frame, muscles and nerves for areas that may be pre-disposed to injury, and suggest ways you can help protect them. In dogs, cats and horses, joint injuries are common, with muscle and tendon strains and tears. Problems with the spine can lead to compressed or herniated discs, and neck issues can lead to mobility problems and even seizures. If you know your pet’s vulnerabilities, you can take steps to prevent injuries. MV

Pet owners’ vet bills are growing. This may explain why fewer are taking their dogs and cats to the animal doctor, even though more

Americans than ever currently own pets.

To make matters worse, a 2.3 percent tax on medical devices that kicked in the beginning of this year includes equipment that’s used for animals as well as people. Items as basic as IV pumps and scalpels are now subject to the tax,

which is to help fund the Affordable Care Act.

Even before the tax, the latest survey showed spending for dog care rose 18.6 percent from 2006 to 2012. Even though cat

vet visits dropped 4 percent in that time, cat owners paid 4 percent

more. This information comes from the U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook, a survey of more than 50,000 households.

Adding that to the new excise tax may cause even more people

torn between paying their utility bills, and taking their pet to the

vet. However, there are a few ways to keep veterinary costs down, while still providing excellent care for your pet – whether it’s a dog, cat, horse or ferret.

While it’s important to get appropriate health

care when your animal needs it,

you can easily prevent

problems,

or catch them early, by staying in tune with your pet’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Is your pet in pain? Before X-rays and MRIs, health practitioners relied on these physical indications of pain: heat, redness, lumps or swelling, tremors, obvious discomfort. To recognize the fi rst four, a pat on the head is not enough. Get used to taking some quiet time to place your hands on your pet, and work on honing your perceptive abilities. Being in a rush or having your mind on what you need to do next will impede your ability to perceive changes – use the time to simply be with your animal. If a joint feels warm, it may be infl amed. Mild localized tremors can indicate a problem in the area beneath your hand. Lumps or an asymmetrical feel when you have your hands on either side of the pet may indicate growths. Take your time and quiet your mind. Animals are aware of energy, and they’ll work with you if feel your intent to trying to connect with them.

Watch how your pet plays It’s important that a pet gets physical and psychological stimulation, but those needs vary with temperament, age, and even how energetic the pet owner is. Pets tend to match their owners’ energy levels, for instance, very elderly owners will tend to have pets that like to nuzzle and curl up next to them. Take note of how your pet plays so you’ll be aware of changes. Is he becoming more aggressive? He may be telling you somethings bothering him. Has she stopped hopping up on the bed? Is he favoring a paw? Beyond the physical, your pet’s play can also communicate emotional distress. If he becomes fearful or timid, consider any changes in the home or personal routines that may be affecting him.

Give thanks. It’s such a simple thing to do and yet, it’s such a powerful thing to do in order to create the life we dream about.

I must start my list by giving thanks for the wonderful family I was given, and the ones responsible for bringing me here to Las Vegas from New York. Have you ever been to New York? If so then you will understand that I don’t let a day go by without giving thanks for the gorgeous Vegas weather! Days here are fi lled with sunshine and surrounded by majestic mountainous views.

I give thanks for the Las Vegas nightlife, and entertaining atmosphere that is available 24/7, along with convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations that stay open all night for us. I give thanks for the desert creatures I see each day that always make me smile: the lizards, the quail, the coyotes and rabbits, scattered through the desert landscape, keeping my dogs on their toes! I give thanks for the newcomers that keep moving to town, for they bring us business and opportunities to form new friendships. I give thanks for my work and being able to live out my passion with my publication, the Nevada Senior Guide. I give thanks for all of the people

that have come in, and gone out of my life over the forty-two years that I have lived here. In Las Vegas, there has always been a reason or a season…

I have been blessed living here in the valley. Such a great life! I hope that I have inspired you to think about your own blessings and all the different things you are thankful for. Write them down! It feels so good and will only bring more blessings your way. MV

Page 52: MyVegas Magazine Fall - Lydia Cover

Fall is here, but it sure doesn’t feel crisp and cool outside. In fact, fall in Las Vegas feels a lot like summer, and the idea of wearing

boots and tights is almost unbearable.

That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the hottest fall fashion and makeup trends, however. In fact, one of the biggest trends of the season is creatively designed nail art!

You may be wondering if nail art is even for you…how easy is it to apply nail art to your fashion and beauty regime? The good news is, no matter what your age or occupation, you can use nail art to enhance your look.

It’s important to keep in mind that there are some rules you should

follow when it comes to using nail art effectively. Too much glitter and too many 3D accessories should be kept for the under 30 crowd. Other than that however, anything you can dream up is fair game. I’ll admit, I haven’t always followed this advice. There have been times that I’ve been lured in by some outlandish nail trends. But for the most part, I try to keep my look sophisticated and versatile in the work place, to fun and sporty on the weekends.

Some of the hottest nail art for fall include:

1 Leopard Mani’s: The leopard print is pretty easy to apply and can be done

in fun colors (not just black and brown). Black and oxblood are two leopard manicure colors you may see a lot of this fall.

2 3D Accents: In the past, I have applied this trend to my manicure

regime, but it can sometimes be a bit much. Stick to just one nail on each hand, instead of accenting all ten fi ngers.

3 Metallic Accents: If you’ve seen French manicures done with all

black and silver tips, they are pretty easy to achieve. You can go to an expensive salon and get Minx nails, or just buy a metallic sharpie to get the look. Check out examples online to recreate this trendy nail art application for fall.

4 Color, or the lack there of. Models at all the big Fashion Houses this

fall were decked out in pale nails or dark black nails. The black and white trend is always fi erce and yes, you can wear white nails after Labor Day! MV

Fall doesn’t come around soon enough, does it? It’s time to say goodbye to triple digits and hello to the doubles! However, the drop in temperature doesn’t mean a beach body disappears. In fact, why not try out a beach body

workout? All you’ll need is a sandy area or a place with small pieces of gravel. Check out your local parks or take a trip to Lake Mead for the following:

High knees: Run in place, drawing your knees into your chest; land with your entire foot. The soft sand will be easier on the joints, as opposed to a hard fl oor.

Speed skating: think this is tough on a regular surface? Try dragging your feet through resistant sand. Just a like a speed skater, lunge from side to side, keeping your bending knee stacked

over your ankle. Arms can extend to the sides, parallel to the fl oor or interlace your fi ngers, palms together in front of your chest. For those who want a little more effort, pick up the opposite foot and drag behind your bent leg- this will offer more of a challenge to your core.

Walking planks: come to a traditional plank position but instead of holding, move your right hand and left foot forward. To take the next “step,” the left hand moves forward, the right foot follows. All the while, you’re holding your plank: chest hovering above the sand, with your navel pulled in tight.

As always, consult a physician before you try any new exercise and recover with water and a seat on the beach! MV

MASTERFUL MARGARITARicardo’s is home of the largest margarita ever made.

MYVEGAS

My Vegas Story

Walking into an authentic Mexican restaurant, there are a few things that could easily reach out and

grab your senses. Among them, are the familiar smells and décor that promise something festive and delicious, the sights of Old Mexico enticing you as you come inside, and a sense of excitement as your mind marinates over that fi rst gulp of a salted-rim margarita. Two important things that should always come to mind upon hearing the words “family-style Mexican cuisine”, are Ricardo’s restaurant, and its faithful leader, Bob Ansara.

With over 30 years in the restaurant business, he should know a thing or two about what keeps a restaurant thriving, and customers coming back for more. In a town like Las Vegas, restaurants face their fair share of obstacles. With new establishments opening weekly on and off the Strip, it is hard to know just what makes or breaks the success of a business in this economy. For Ansara, the message is simple: “Food is love.” Think about what brings family, friends, coworkers, business associates, and dinner-daters together: great food and a sense of connection. At Ricardo’s, those are the things that continue to keep diners satisfi ed. Ansara knows that a large portion of our society functions through interpersonal connection. People like to talk to one another, and they love

to eat! “Food brings people together…it’s the glue that binds people to one another…” he says.

At Ricardo’s restaurant, the positive experience that guests have come to appreciate begins as soon as they walk through the front door. Ansara’s policy on keeping his customers happy is based on the same formula he uses to keep his staff happy: acknowledgment. As soon as guests arrive, they are greeted by the friendly and courteous staff who make it their priority to ensure the best possible dining experience. Everyone working at Ricardo’s, from front-of-house all the way to the back-of-house employees, pay attention to how your meal is going. Friendly hosts greet and seat diners, wait staff ensure fantastic service, the chef and kitchen staff work hard to prepare a consistently delicious meal, and bartenders keep the cocktails fl owing.

Ansara has worked with some of the same employees for almost 30 years! In a fickle industry like the restaurant business, that record is hard to beat. He is known to personally greet guests, and keep a close connection with those people around him. Making it a point to really engage with employees can ensure that everyone is happy and working their hardest to create positive energy to exist in. “It’s important to stay close to your team and close to your customers” he notes.

When asked what are some of things that drive him crazy about other dining establishments who don’t quite hit the mark, he straightforwardly replies: “It bothers me when people are not warm. Hospitality is based on warmth, and hospitality is key! Also, it’s important to remember that ‘food is love’, and cleanliness is next to Godliness”. These are wise words being uttered from the mouth of a man who got his start in the restaurant industry as a dishwasher at the age of 14 years old. Growing up in California, Ansara worked behind the scenes, and grew up in the restaurant business with his family. By the age of 26 he had moved to Las Vegas, and soon after, the dream of owning his own restaurant became his reality. Over the years, Ricardo’s

has opened other locations on and off the Strip, including a run at the MGM Grand Casino. Currently, the location at Flamingo and Decatur is

where Ricardo’s has set up shop, and showcases a replica of their record breaking “largest margarita ever made” outside the front door. By adding Gaming inside the bar, and keeping doors open to the public 24 hours a day, Ricardo’s has found a way to cater to the industry crowd, tourists, and loyal and local clientele.

When the recession hit, businesses were faced with the possibility of losing everything that they had worked so hard to build, and Ricardo’s was no exception. In order to stay on top of the failing economy, Ansara knew he had to come up with a formula that would carry his restaurant legacy beyond the diffi cult times. A lot of Ricardo’s capacity

to survive is due to the loyalty of his customers. Even when times got tough, he knew that by sacrifi cing the great food and quality service that he had been known for all these years might cost him the loyalty of the people who believed in him. He made a promise to his staff that the business would succeed one way or another during the recession; and so far, that’s been true. His gratefulness to the city of Las Vegas, which has encouraged Ricardo’s survival, prompts Bob Ansara to display an attitude of gratitude each and every day. MV

MV

In a city where anything over 6 years old is in danger of shutting down and being imploded, it is refreshing to fi nd a piece of old Vegas that still

satisfi es today.

Piero’s Italian Cuisine has been serving the valley for 31 years now, with regular Joe’s and superstar celebrities alike stopping in for great food and a classy environment without the hustle and bustle of the strip crowd.

The food and atmosphere at Piero’s is top-notch. Incredible stone crab shipped straight from Florida, a garbage caesar salad that tastes way better than it sounds, and so many other options that are sure to please...but their wheelhouse is their famous Osso Buco, with veal so tender that a knife is totally optional.

And their wait staff? Beyond classy. “Sir” and “madam” fi lls the room with impeccably behaved staff, many of whom have worked there for decades. You’ll have a hard time fi nding a place that treats you as well.

Every time I have walked into this place, it’s another story to tell. Spotting Mike Tyson, UFC’s Dana White, Dick Butkus, just to name a few. Or perhaps the time when rapper Flava Flav, with clock around his neck and all, sang Larry Graham’s R&B classic “One In A Million You” to a capitvated dining room. Yeah, it happened.

Comedian Jerry Lewis comes in regularly for his favorite: linguine and clams. He loves the dish so much, for over 2 decades he has given his “Five

Star Restaurant Award” exclusively to Piero’s. How’s that for star power?

And if you walk in and the place looks familiar, you’ve either seen the movie “Casino” (it was fi lmed there) or you used to work in the mob (old school casino bosses would frequent the restaurant).

So if you’re looking for a great night of food and maybe even a celebrity sighting, look no further than Piero’s. MV

These are the fondest memories I have of studying in Italy: drinking espresso at Bar Rosso in Campo Santa Margherita,

smoking cheap cigarettes with friends all day long, and eating a ton of food. I literally stuffed my face with so much Italian food that I should have come back 300lbs heavier. Since walking was the main transportation method in Venice, I managed to lose weight (which was the best deal ever)! It was, to say the least, a most wonderful experience.

Since then, I’ve quit smoking, but still guzzle down the caffeine. Having pizza in Italy was another out-of-this-world experience. Enjoying an individually sized, thinly crusted pizza, eating with a knife and fork with the freshest ingredients, you couldn’t ask for anything more satisfying than even the simplest of them all- the Margherita. With just the three ingredients Basil, Tomato Sauce and Mozzarella, it is the purest and most diffi cult of fl avorful pizzas to achieve.

Settebello Pizzeria brings me back to those fond memories. It captures the essence of Italian cooking with the freshest, and most raw ingredients to create their pizza. They are licensed by the VPN (Vera Pizza Napoletana) an organization created in the 80’s to preserve, promote and educate the traditional art of Napolitan Pizza making. The VPN Charter provides strict guidelines and requirements to protect the integrity of this culinary discipline, which is why Settebello pizza catapults me back to Italy and it’s wonderful, rich style of humble, yet elegant, cuisine.

Primarily a pizza restaurant, Settebello does provide an appetizer selection comprised mostly of breads, salads and cured meats. All of these are absolutely delicious, and I recommend ordering one in each category if you’re hungry. Our personal favorite is the Involtini di Prosciutto: Prosciutto wrapped around Arugula and Goat Cheese with shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano, Balsamic Reduction and Extra Virgin Olive Oil on top. This is an incredibly satisfying and evolved dish, it combines a salad quotient with a cured meat app that is developed and sophisticated. The peppery bitter greens with the creaminess of goat cheese and the buttery Prosciutto Crudo is just symphonic, add the sweet/tart Balsamic and fruity Olive Oil and it sends me over the top!

Settebello has two Pizzas that are our favorite: the Settebello, and the Diavola. The utmost favorite is the Settebello: with Fennel Sausage, Roasted Mushrooms, Toasted Pine Nuts, Mozzarella, Basil and

Crushed Tomatoes with a drizzle of Olive Oil, this is the supreme Pizza of the Napolitan set. We thoroughly enjoy eating this pizza, with all the toppings working so well with each other, and it’s balanced well with the toppings to crust/bread ratio, so you get your carb cravings sated simultaneously.

At last, for dessert, there’s quite a selection at Settebello, but our two favorites are: the house made Cannoli and Tiramisu. This time, we tried out the Tiramisu, a creamy and decadent dessert with Marscapone cream, Lady Fingers soaked in Espresso, and Disaronno and powdered chocolate on top. The serving size, in my mind, was a bit too small (a cake pan is more my size)! It’s a great dessert, totally authentic, and hits the spot after a great meal.

Settebello is the best pizza place in Las Vegas; defi nitely a must if you enjoy an elevated dining experience with good authentic Italian pizza! MV

MV

There’s a chill in the air this time of year. The lighter, brighter foods of our hot summer (salads, summer

veggies, grilled chicken) are giving way to the heavier and more intense foods of the fall season (earthy vegetables, soups and stews, roasts and braises). It’s possible you could be starting to crave Thanksgiving dinner.

As fall approaches, I’ve begun to formulate my list of favorite wines for fall: choices which are infl uenced partially by the cooling weather and largely by the produce that appears at this time of year, the bounty of the harvest. The outdoor grill is left to gather cobwebs, not so much from neglect but because being in the kitchen, near the feel and smell of warming things, suddenly seems like a very welcome idea. Rich butternut squash soups, savory mushroom ragùs or even apple desserts are the fi rst dishes that come to mind, along with hearty stews, roasted vegetables and pot roasts that take a few extra minutes to prepare but well worth the wait!

The wines that go best with lots of popular fall foods will be heavier and more intense. Lighter white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio simply step aside for Chardonnay and some great tasting red wines. Here, are some of the favorite fall foods and the wines to enjoy with them:

FOOD: MushroomsWINE: Both Chardonnay and

Pinot Noir have enough heft to work with the meatiness of mushrooms and also have mushroomy nuances themselves. Think wild mushroom risotto or chanterelle and gruyère bread pudding. If your dish has actual meat as well — as in beef stroganoff — you could go for something heavier, such as a nice Merlot as a good choice.

Wines & Food Pairings for the FallBy Les Kincaid

FOOD: Roasted chickenWINE: You can’t get much more classic than roast

chicken (one of my favorite dishes) and Chardonnay. For a change of pace, try Viogner or even Pinot Noir.

FOOD: Game-day chiliWINE: A fruity red, such as Zinfandel or Syrah, plays well

with chili’s intensity, and adding a splash of wine to your chili can help seal the deal. Watch out for anything with too much alcohol — if your chili is spicy, a high alcohol wine can exacerbate the burn. I’m not fond of high alcohol wines in general anyway – they don’t normally pair well with food.

FOOD: Thanksgiving dinnerWINE: The fl avors here are all over the map — the turkey

is savory, the cranberry sauce is sweet, the stuffi ng is earthy, the green beans are vernal. Relatively middle-of-the-road pinot noir is big enough to handle the gamut but light enough to work with poultry. Gewürztraminer is a good bet if there are a lot of sweeter dishes in the meal.

FOOD: Good, old-fashioned pot roastWINE: With big, beefy food, you need similarly big, beefy

wine — like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah. Make the combination sing by adding a little soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, or Dijon mustard to your braising liquid. Remember to choose a nice red wine for a chilly fall day. MV

Sometimes you don’t have to look far for a unique experience. Such was the case when we went to Vic’s for dinner.

“Ooh’s” and “aah’s”, and a big “WOW!” for the views of the city from this lovely Henderson,

NV location in Anthem. From the lights of the Strip, to the lush Anthem golf course that serves as a backdrop,

the atmosphere is serene. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available for guests.

Our server, Dave, was a Foodologist with a photographic memory of all the items on Vic’s dinner menu. There was not a question that he did not know

the answer to; and there were many questions during our dining experience! He took the time to mention

each offering’s entire preparation, ingredients and presentation in detail.

To start, an artful plate of ciabatta triangle pyramids set upright greeted us. This

fun presentation of fl avors included cheddar, rosemary-sundried tomato, and

“everything” with a dusting of seeds and spices.

The clear winner for us in the appetizer round was the

Truffl e Mushroom Ravioli. It is pure bliss topped with green onion garnish, and nuzzled in a bed

of burnt butter orange sage sauce with a dusting

of toasted pistachios and shaved parmesan. The fl avor combinations were brilliant. Save

a little of the rosemary ciabatta for any leftover sauce mopping!

You Can Have It All At Vic’s

The Onion Soup Mac and Cheese was our winning choice for the Vic’s comfort-food-of-the-evening award. The onion soup (comprised of yellow onions and a chicken based stock), lightened the palate for the rich and creamy mac & cheese, and melted Havarti that rested on top. The only challenge here arose with the fact that one of us couldn’t stop eating it, and almost ruined the rest of her dinner. Yes, it is that good.

Watermelon Mozzarella Salad is a trend on the local scene here in Vegas; at Vic’s this has been exalted to a diners’ preferred status. Watermelon squares, rounds of mozzarella, drizzles of pistachio vinaigrette, a little watercress and a sidecar of gorgonzola, this was a treat that could become your go-to salad for any season.

The Anti-Pasta Vegetable Lasagna was a plate of gooey yumminess. As the name suggests, no pasta is involved in this creation, just layers of veggies and cheese. If you are vegetarian (and gluten free) this is a perfect choice. It arrives to the table in a hot, cast iron pan.

Saving the best for last was the Carmel Apple Pork Chop with Grandma’s Stuffi ng. A 12-ounce pork chop topped with a caramelized apple found a nice resting place on the stuffi ng. Drizzled with caramel and a butter whiskey broth, this dish turned out to resemble the best French toast we have ever eaten. The dish paired nicely with Wild Ferment Chardonnay found on Vic’s impressive wine list.

Barely saving room for dessert, we couldn’t pass up the deep-fried Nuttabutta. This warm peanut butter cookie with an orange soda batter and Chambord Welch’s grape juice reduction, created a contemporary peanut butter and jelly happy ending!

Don’t miss a chance to meet restaurant General Manager Tony Caterine, as he does a mean impression of owner Vic Moea, and demonstrates the same passion for service and food that the rest of his team does.

Vic’s is the kind of place that you could consider casual, elegant, or romantic dining. Perfect for dinner with friends, a lunch date or Girl’s Night Out. With stunning views, there is no need to look any further than Vic’s.

Running straight from a performance with Rod Stewart in a little black dress, directly to rocking out with Vegas

headliner Zowie Bowie on the same night, would have seemed like a far away dream for most people. However, that is the reality for Lydia Ansel of the electric strings performance group, Bella Strings. Just one year after moving to Las Vegas, Lydia is loving her new life, and learning what it means to live as a true Las Vegas performer.

It wasn’t all glamour and high profi le shows from the beginning, however…

As a child, Lydia’s mother had a Marc Chagall painting of a violinist above the fi replace in their family home. Since a young age, she became fascinated with the beauty of the violin. Determined to know the instrument, she joined the sixth grade orchestra and was hooked instantly! Lydia became forever grateful to her mother for paying her way through private violin lessons as a birthday gift.

Over time, that gift ended up becoming quite costly as she continued weekly lessons for the next 10 years!

Lydia received a degree in Violin Performance from the University of North Texas, and continued on to work on her Masters Degree on a full scholarship at Arizona State University. She somehow made a “right” turn and found herself enthralled with electric violins, rock music, effects pedals, and good ole’ rock & roll.

Even though she had previously played in symphonies and other classical venues, she found a new love performing in big bands, tribute bands, country/rock bands, variety bands, and as a solo artist. Lydia took a few contracts on cruise ships, traveling the world and looking for the perfect spot for herself...and by pure luck, found it in Las Vegas, NV.

Just a little over one year ago, Lydia moved to Las Vegas where she barely knew two people, and found a community that welcomed and embraced her. Almost immediately, she began doing performances with the all girl, rock electric string quartet called Bella Electric Strings (owned and created by Nina DiGregorio). This was an extremely educational venture, not so much with the technical performance aspect, but because she had to learn the “Vegas” style of being on a stage. Lydia

While we squeeze the last out of our Vegas Summer, we’re also quickly gearing up for the arrival of fall;

and wow do we have a lot of fun in store for you!

PROJECT PINKStation Casinos will host its

Look for details soon on how you get in on all of the pink fun.

To say that Peter Pavone is a “Jack-of-all-Trades” is a vast understatement. The Las Vegas performer extraordinaire

is not just known for one particular talent, but a plethora of impersonations, vocal stylings, musical performances, comedy routines, workshops, fi lm and television productions, and professional training and voice over work. With a list of accolades that would warrant a tip of the fedora from Old Blue Eyes himself, Peter Pavone has made great strides in the Entertainment scene in Las Vegas.

Acclaimed for his spot-on vocal impersonation of Frank Sinatra and other Rat Pack veterans, he uses his roots in classical theater to enhance his live performance. Musically gifted from a young age, he is fl uent in guitar and percussive instrumentation, as well as the use of his smooth vocal abilities to delight audiences all over the Vegas valley and abroad.

He adds comedy to his repertoire, and has taught workshops on how to navigate every facet of live and stage performance, including stand up comedy,

live musical theater, and commercial and television acting. Performing since childhood, Pavone has been blessed with the ability to impersonate, and has always followed his passion for entertainment. Most recently, he has portrayed Frank Sinatra in a headlining Las Vegas Rat Pack revue, and does a mean, blue-eyed, one man show to boot!

So what’s next for an entertainer who seems to have already done it all? You can catch Peter Pavone’s upcoming performances in Las Vegas at The Laugh Factory on August 14, 2013, and as a celebrity judge for the Sam’s Town Elvis Competition happening on August 18, 2013. MV

What do you get with a mirrored armadillo, hot girls in slapping leather, nonstop country music

and some good ole’ fashioned line-dancing? What you get is one heck of a great place! Formally known as Revolver Saloon and dance hall, Revolver is the ultimate, cool country hot spot locals fl ock to weekly. Even the non-local Las Vegans go there. You may see a country artist there, or a celebrity hanging out from time-to-time (and I’m not just talking about coyote radio hosts Cadillac Jack or Paul Knight.) It’s one of those places where you just never know who you’re going to meet, what new drink you’ll check out, or what line dance you’ll happily get swept up in. This special place Ain’t just another country bar. Revolver is guaranteed to get your head boppin’, your boots scootin’ and it’ll bring out your hillbilly bone. Yep, you may even surprise yourself!

Open Wednesday through Sunday, each night features DY Kaz and DJ Sinner spinning everything from classic country, to 80’s and 90’s rock and roll. Sometimes you’ll hear Hip-Hop or Techno music spicing up a line dance or two. While you’re busy strutting your stuff on the dance fl oor, don’t forget to look up and say “hello” to Revolver’s resident mascot, Delilah, the mirrored armadillo…(‘cause come on, disco balls are so 80’s.)

For the last four years, it’s been my pleasure and personal duty to make Wednesday nights fun again. Wednesday night is “Ladies Night”, where you can join 102.7 The Coyote and I broadcasting live and giving away concert tickets, fl yaway

vacations, and much, much more. We celebrate the ladies and man oh man, do we do it right! Cowgirls drink for a dollar until 11pm. But that’s not the only reason why I can be found on the dance fl oor cuttin’ up a rug or two…

Thursday nights you can Drink Like a Cowboy with Revolver’s “Back in the Saddle” Thursdays, featuring $3 longnecks and whiskey. Just in time for the weekend, Friday nights are all about “Barbwire and Roses” where you can enjoy $5 Jack Daniel shots and bottle specials.

What better way to roll into Sunday, then with Revolver’s “Reloaded Saturdays”, where you can get your buzz on affordably- with 2 for 1 drinks until 11pm? The good news is that whichever night you decide to wet your whistle at Revolver Saloon and dance hall, you’ll find hourly shot specials and sometimes surprise specialty drinks; you just never know what general manager Cheryl Fleeman, will add to the nightly menu.

Why am I goin’ on and on about this place? I’ve been an Emcee, Host, DJ and party goer of the place since the day it opened about 4 years ago! But you don’t have to take my word for it, head into Revolver on any given night and check it out with your own eyes. You will see flocks of line dancers of all ages enjoying all that Revolver has to offer. (It’s not out of the norm to see an eighty years young cowboy dancing along with the best of ‘em.)

If you need to brush up on your country moves, start by checking out instructional videos online, and in the convenience of your own home. When you decide that you’ve had enough of looking in the mirror, you can fi nd Jason, Revolver’s resident dance instructor giving free line dance lessons at revolver on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8:15pm.

Whether you’re new to country music, you’re looking to expand your horizons or just try a new spot away from the strip, Revolver Saloon and Dance Hall knows how to throw a party. Don’t be surprised if you see one of their billboards promoting a black light party, Sadie Hawkins night or a bikini contest. In fact, the “Blazin Bodies” contest is currently going on every Wednesday night, where you can get qualified to win your share of $20,000 over Labor Day weekend, just for showing up, looking hot, and proving you’re worthy. Once you’ve experienced the country vibe and have been bitten by the Revolver Saloon and Dance Hall “bug”, you may find yourself charmed-and coming back for more!

MYVEGAS Magazine · FALL 2013 95

Page 98: MyVegas Magazine Fall - Lydia Cover

This photo shows an observer looking downstream at the Hoover Dam,

March 14, 1932. Construction on the Hoover Dam began in 1931. The need for a dam in this area had been discussed for a few decades, and had been presented in administrations beginning with Teddy Roosevelt.

Natural cycles of fl ooding and drought in the southwestern United States had stunted agricultural growth and industrial production. Constructing a dam would control the Colorado River, and contribute hydroelectric power; a valuable resource. The growth of Las Vegas as a major metropolis was heavily dependent on power and water availability.

The site for the Hoover Dam proved to be so remote, that a process of laying railroad lines and roads around the work site was necessary. Tunnels would provide access to and from the construction areas. Throughout building development, heavy sand, soot and water runoff created a cumbersome soil “muck” that made the building of the Hoover Dam a soggy process. MV
