2018 Captains and Leadership Team

I would like to congratulate each and every aspiring leader who delivered a captain’s speech in week

eight. All candidates did a fantastic job and it is a certainty that no matter who is successful we will

be in good hands in the coming year. The two captains and four prefects will all be announced at

presentation day.

The process we adopted this year is in response to feedback from our parents, community and stu-

dents. In place of the existing prefecture system we now have an elected leadership team. The suc-

cessful six candidates will follow a detailed leadership journey to provide authentic leadership op-

portunities while developing their leadership skills and characteristics. The Program will be equita-

ble, transparent and reflective of our school’s vision.

The Students Leadership Program allows the students to demonstrate and reflect through their ac-

tions and the school’s core values of excellence, respect and community. Each student will under-

take a Leadership Passport, which will be a record of students’ participation in leadership opportu-

nities and development of leadership skills.

Christmas across the World.

In 5/6D, students have been researching Christmas in different countries. Here are some of

the facts we have found:

Kate, Payden and Will: Christmas trees get shipped in by boat to Hawaii. They also decorate palm

trees at the beach.

Olivia and Makayla: Christmas in Spain begins early with a Christmas lottery on December 2nd.

Cindi: It is the tradition in France to display nativity scenes until the 2nd February.

Ryan: In Slovakia, many people are Roman Catholics. They begin their Christmas with Advent, which is the start of

their important preparations for Christmas.

Tom and Kayl: Some families in France stay up until midnight to have their Christmas dinner.

Brodie: In New Zealand, people like to celebrate Christmas in December and then again in July so that they can ex-

perience a cold Christmas.

Ashton and Eboney: Santa’s Sleigh is replaced by a canoe pulled by dolphins in Hawaii for Christmas

Chloe M: Christmas in Spain is a time of Christmas carols, decorations, festive street lighting, joy,

and a festive atmosphere

Morgan: German Families prepare for Christmas throughout a very cold December.

Alex and Hunter: Throughout history, Christmas was not traditionally celebrated in Scotland because it was banned

for nearly 400 years until the 1950’s.

Layla: In Mexico, Christmas is celebrated from December 12th to January 6th. Children often perform for the

‘Posada’.

Maliyan, Jessie and Matthew: In Italy during December, the weather drops to around 7 degrees Celsius by

the end of the month. 'Babbo Natale', the Father Christmas, brings presents to children on Christmas eve.

5/6D were the winners in week 9! Our seniors have done another tremendous job showing the rest of

the school how to be positive role models underlying our values of Excellence, Respect and Communi-

The lining up reward will continue into 2018 as well as more exciting, positive and rewarding initiatives

for the students at Arcadia Vale PS in 2018!

Thank you!

I would like to personally thank each and every person associated with Arcadia Vale PS and the wider

community for their commitment, dedication and support of the wonderful students at our school.

During my first semester at the school I have been able to develop relationships with the students,

should be known by the end of the year.

Reports

End of year reports will go home on Wednesday 13th December (Week 10).

The student report that parent/carers will receive at the end of this term, will use an A to E grading of

students that point out the child’s progress and achievement so far.

The grading of each child is based on how well the child has learnt what he or she was expected to

learn and how well they have been able to apply that knowledge, understanding and skill.

The grades don’t rank the child in his or her class. Rather, the grades indicate whether the child is ‘on

track’, and learning what is expected, doing better than expected or needs more help. Refer to the ta-

ble below for the Common Grade Scale.
