    WINDOWS

    Pontcanna is a district in

Cardi thats rich in heritageand consequently much of

it is in a Conservation Area.

    So when one Pontcanna

    homeowner wanted to replace

    the windows in his turn-of-the-

    century property, not only did

he want to make the most of

    his homes original heritage, he

    was bound by the regulations

to do so.The property had originally had timber

sash windows, but these had been

replaced forty or fty years ago by timber

    casements. The homeowner wanted to

    replace the ageing and out-of-keeping

casements windows to bring back the

    original period looks and approached

    local family-owned fabricator and installer

The Welsh Glasshouse for advice. The

company introduced him to the Genesis

vertical slider developed by Bison Frames

and he was immediately impressed with

its authentic detailing of a traditional

sliding sash with all the added thermal

    eciency and low maintenance benets

    of a PVC-u window.

Of course, because the house was in

    a Conservation Area, the homeowner

needed to have his choice of window

    approved by the conservation

department of the City of Cardi

Council. Shaun Armstrong of The Welsh

Glasshouse takes up the story, saying,

    The conservation department ocer

was initially very sceptical, as we had

expected. But we worked closely with

the homeowner and Bison Frames over

a period of weeks to provide all the

    documentation and samples that were

required. In the end the department

was happy that the Genesis met all the

criteria, especially in relation to the look

and appeal of a traditional vertical slider.

    We were delighted!

Once the homeowner and The Welsh

    Glasshouse had got the permission

    required, work rapidly commenced.

    The inecient and unattractive timber

    casements were replaced with 14

    authentically beautiful and thermally

    ecient Genesis windows with Chartwell

Green exteriors and white interiors and

    the results are stunning.

    Shaun Armstrong comments, It is

testament to the design of Genesis and

the meticulous attention to detail by

Bison to replicate the windows of 100

years ago that we got the approvals

required. Its great news for other

homeowners in the Pontcanna area too.

They will still need to seek approval for

their choice of window, but we hope

that our work on this property should

    make future applications much morestraightforward.

    Bisons Genesis vertical slider was

developed to provide a solution for

people living in Grade II listed or

    conservation area properties with a

    low maintenance, thermally ecient

alternative to the timber sliding sash.

This latest example of an installation

    demonstrates that its meeting the

    objective!

Ian Miller, Head of Sales for

    The Independent Ratings

    Company tells us that

    results are speaking volumes

    for customers using their

    packages.

It has been a really enjoyable month,

and one of the highlights for me was

delivering a report to GQA following onfrom a survey we carried out for them

recently; the results speak volumes and

prove once again there is no substitute

for asking your customers for their

opinions. It has been a really positive

experience for them and has given them

a clear agenda for the future.

The same is true for those companies

using our feedback and ratings packages

when selling to retail; there is simply no

denying it, customer feedback posted l ive

on their websites is bringing them newbusiness which they would not have got

    previously.

We have a range of packages, so if

you would like more information, call

    me on 07462 558439 or email meian@

    Independent Ratings Company software

    packages case study.

    GQA survey sets benchmark

for on-going customer servicelevels and future industry

    training and qualications

    requirements.

Mick Clayton, CEO of GQA, the

    fenestration industrys qualications writing

body tells us how their recent customer

survey has acted as a real boost.

I guess we are like everybody else,

fully immersed in what we do, thinking

that we are giving our customers theproducts and service levels to match.

Well now we know for sure the things

we are doing right, where we can

improve, and where we can develop.

The results of the recent 50 point survey

we carried out with The Independent

Ratings Company have given us all

a real boost. The response from our

customers was rst class, showing they

are truly engaged with us; it has given

us a clear mandate as to what we are

doing right, what they feel we can dobetter, and some great suggestions of

how we can widen our product oering

    in the future.

    OVER 95% APPROVAL RATING

    FOR OUR EXTERNAL QUALITY

    ASSESSORS.

    What was especially encouraging was

the respect that the industry has for GQA

    External Quality Assessors; their approval

rating across over a dozen criteria was in

excess of 95%. As the authors of Glasssector qualications, often oered by

    other organisations, it was especially

rewarding for us to see that GQA people

are doing such a great job supporting

and raising the quality of provision inthe industry through our partners.

We will be making the results of our

survey available for all our customers

to see in the very near future; it is

interesting to get their take on how the

    industry views qualications, MTCs, and

training in general, and it is re-assuring

for us to see the level of genuine

    engagement we have with them.

    Qualications and training for

    operatives within our industry have

    always been important; they will

become even more so in the future.

Spurred on by the results of our

survey GQA will continue to be at the

    forefront of driving an understanding

of their importance, and in making new

    qualications available for those who

want to develop their careers further

    through learning and training.

    GQA Qualications writes the

    qualications for the industry and

supports their delivery through its 75

    NEWS

    CENSolutions is widely

    recognised as the leading

    consultancy and test facility for

    the window, door and glazing

    industries and as it continues

to extend its scope of services,

it is keen to ensure its team

    of dedicated independent

    consultants understand rst-

hand the testing its customersproducts are subjected to.

That is why the entire CENSolutions team

    recently visited Wintech Engineering

Limited in Telford for one of its open days.

    Mike Gaillard, Joint Managing Director

    of CENSolutions says: Although

CENSolutions is more of a facilitator

    for companies achieving certication,

we are often asked for advice on which

tests are needed for a particular product

combination or range. We have an

excellent range of expertise across the

team which allows us to do just that, but

what better way to understand testing in

its entirety, than to see it done rst-hand

by a UKAS accredited, quality test house.

The team at Wintech showed us PAS

24 Security Testing, BS 6375-1 Weather

Testing, EN 1191 Cyclic Testing, EN

12600 Glass Impact Testing and EN

1288-3 4-Point Bend Glass Testing. It was fascinating to see the tests

being conducted and what some of

the well made products in our industry

will actually stand up to! And the day

achieved - exactly as we hoped it would

    - an even better understanding across

    our consultants and customer service

advisors of what happens to a window,

door or piece of glass in each of the tests

we put our customers forward for.

    Technical Director of Wintech Engineering,

Michael Wass adds: We are always

pleased to open our doors to anyone who

wants to see the tests we carry out on

windows, doors and glass and how we

run them. We take a quality approach to

everything we do, for example we have

designed a lot of the testing equipment

ourselves to ensure the equipment stands

up to the rigorous tests we perform on

behalf of our customers. Visitors are

often surprised at how much a door will

withstand when being tested for securityor how much a piece of glass will bend

before it breaks all tests that we perform

in our UKAS accredited laboratory, and

all tests that quality companies like

CENSolutions need to be talking to their

    customers about in the marketplace.

    GLASS & GLAZING

The HSE has launched a new

safety campaign as an averageof 20 tradespeople die every

    week from asbestos related

    diseases. The grim gure of

    1.3 million at risk illustrates

    how prevalent a danger the

    material is, often taking years

    to develop in a person.

The campaign is targeted at tradespeople

as they will be in danger of disturbing

the material in the course of their normalwork of removing and installing. The

    Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

    estimates that tradespeople spend on

average 1.53 days a week in buildings

built before 2000, which have a high risk

of containing asbestos; the equivalent of

    70 days a year.

Asbestos can be found in walls and

ceilings, or the structure of a building,

as well as a host of other places, e.g.

    guttering, sots oor tiles, boilers

andtoilet cisterns. It can be disturbed

by basic maintenance work like drilling

holes and sanding and once disturbed,

the microscopic bres can prove lethal

if breathed in, causing lung disease and

    cancer.

As well as illustrating how often

    tradespeople can be exposed to

    asbestos, the survey commissioned by

the HSE revealed some common myths

    believed by those at risk.

One in seven (14%) believed that drinking

a glass of water would help protect them

from the deadly dust and one in four(27%) thought that opening a window

would help to keep them safe.

Only a third (30%) of those asked, were

able to identify all the correct measures

for safe asbestos working, while more

than half (57%) made at least one

potentially lethal mistake in trying to

    identify how to stay safe.

    The research, undertaken by Censuswide

in September 2014, shows that while

more than half (53%) knew that asbestos

could be in old buildings built before

1970, only 15% were aware that it could

still be found in buildings built up to the

    year 2000.

    Another worrying factor was that

although many of those surveyed could

    pinpoint some asbestos-containing

    materials, others were clueless, with

only 19% recognising it could also be

hidden in common xtures such as toilet

    seats and cisterns.

    Mark Harper, Minister responsible for

Health and Safety, launched the latest

HSE campaign at the TradePoint store in

    Cricklewood. The company is supporting

    the campaign by distributing asbestos

safety kits to tradespeople through their

    stores across the UK.

    The number dying every year

    from asbestos related-diseases

    is unacceptably high, said Mr

    Harper. Despite being banned in

the construction industry, asbestosexposure remains a very serious risk to

    tradespeople. This safety campaign is

about highlighting the risks and easy

measures people can take to protect

    themselves.

A key feature of the campaign is

the creation of a new web app for

phones, tablets and laptops that helps

    tradespeople easily identify where they

could come into contact with the deadly

material as they go about their day-to-

day work and gives them tailored help onhow to deal with the risks.

    FMB welcomeshousing review

    from the Labour

    Party as making a

    realistic prospect for

    sustainable building

    targets

    The Federation Master

    Builders (FMB) has come out

in favour of the Labour Partys

    Lyons Housing Review.

    It believes it provides a

    long overdue blueprint for

    increasing the capacity and

    output of small and medium

    sized enterprises (SMEs)

    house builders to help build

    what the Federation claims

    is the much needed 200,000

    new homes a year.

    The FMB states that

    the review is the most

comprehensive review ofhousing delivery seen in

    recent years.

    Given the extent of the

    housing shortage we face, the

    target of 200,000 new homes

    per year is ambitious, but

    it is a necessary ambition,

    argued Brian Berry, Chief

    Executive, FMB.

To achieve this aim we will

need to signicantly boost thecapacity of the house building

    industry and Sir Michael

    Lyons has rightly identied the

    SME house building sector as

a crucial part of the housing

    sectors capacity.

It is very pleasing to see

    that Lyons has recognised

    the barriers that small

    house builders face, which

    prevent them from building

the homes we need, suchas access to nance and a

    shortage of small sites, and

has put forward a package of

    measures to address them.

    Berry also noted that as

    well as endorsing the Help

    to Build loan guarantee

    initiative, which Labour was

    already in the process of

    developing, the report has

    made the groundbreaking

recommendation of areturn to a simpler, redline

    system for outline planning

    applications for smaller sites.

    The focus across the whole

of the report of pushing more

land into the system is also

    extremely welcome and Lyons

    rightly highlights the need

for a focus within this on the

    identication of smaller sites

    and packaging opportunities

for SMEs as part of largerdevelopments, concluded

    Berry.

The 100 million funding of the Green Deal

may come too late for many companies

that have invested in providing installation

    measures

Energy Secretary, Ed Daveys statement to the Liberal

Confernece in Glasgow last week, stated that 100 million

would be provided for the Green Deal Home Improvement

    Fund (GDHIF).

This is on top of the 120 million that was promised in June

this year but led to such a take up that the scheme was closed

suddenly in July. It led to shock and massive criticism from

many trade associations and other bodies and those who

had invested substantial amounts in training and resources to

prepare for installing energy ecient products like boilers and

    solar heating.

Insulation companies that were expected to win a great deal

of business from the Green Deal have reported themselves in

diculty with many going bust or announcing redundancies.

Big companies that have listings on the FTSE and operate

facilities management services in the energy eciency sector, are among the casualties. Carillion, after it lost 43 million cut

1,000 jobs from its energy services division, due in part to far

lower than expected demand for energy eciency upgrades.

This new funding for the Green Deal begins in November but

there are many who feel it comes too late and is not going to

be sucient to maintain the it as a viable, long term scheme.

As temperatures start to drop and households turn up their

heating, this additional funding is a timely, but ultimately

temporary, solution to encouraging energy eciency, stated

John Alker, UK Green Building Council. This funding could

see us through to the General Election, but what happens after

that? All parties must recognise that home energy eciency

is an infrastructure priority, with public investment needed to

support the most vulnerable and to create the condence for

the private sector to scale up investment over the long term.

    RED BLUEPRINTFOR GROWTH

    MORE CASHFOR GREEN DEAL

Sir Michael Lyons and his housing

review have got the thumbs up from

    the FMB.

Will he be smiling for much longer? Energy Secretary, Ed Davey, announced a

further 100 million for the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund but this maynot be enough for installer businesses that invested in the scheme.

    FENSA reports a

    stubborn minority

    of its registered

    businesses have notembraced mandatory

    Insurance Backed

    Guarantees (IBGs).

The system set up by FENSA

    and its Approved Insurance

    Providers allows automatic

    notication of installations

    from FENSA to the insurance

    company, automatic issuing

of the IBG policies direct from

the insurance company to thehomeowner and billing direct

    from the insurance company

    to the installer.

    According to FENSA, this

    system is working well.

    However, there is a stubborn

    minority of installers that

    have yet to provide FENSA

    with details of their chosen

    IBG provider and therefore

    currently cannot self-certify.

    FENSA warns that the

    consequences for these

    installers are stark. If an

    installer does not issue (or

pay for) an IBG policy for each

    job notied, that company

    will be expelled from FENSA.

Such installers will also not be

    able to register with another

    glazing Competent Persons

Scheme, as they are in breach

    of FENSA rules.

    There is no hiding place

    for installers ducking out of

    IBGs, stated Chris Mayne,

    Managing Director, FENSA.

    Because the system is

    computerised, we can

    immediately see which

installers do not have an IBG

supplier in place. They will be

    expelled from FENSA.

    FENSA rules state: To provide

    each customer (other than

    a local authority or housing

    association) with an Insurance

    Backed Guarantee policy

    (conforming to requirements

laid down from time to time

    by FENSA) to provide cover

    to the customer should the

    Registered Business, for

    whatever reason, cease to

    trade.

We have a duty to those

    FENSA registered businesses

that are playing by the rules,

    said Chris Mayne. We cannot

    allow those installers that

    break or ignore the scheme

rules to carry on as usual.

We will initiate the process to

    expel these installers.

    EXPULSION

    ON THECARDS

FENSA warns that members can be

expelled if they do not comply over

    compliance and mandatory IBGs.

    Avocet Hardware has praised

    Glazerite Windows for its

decision to t its ABS snap

secure lock as standard on all

of its Secured by Design (SBD)

    accredited doors.

    Raymond Pearce, Avocet Hardwares

head of UK sales, said: Lock-snapping

has become a huge issue in recent yearsand one of the main reasons for its rise

in prevalence is the number of double

glazed and uPVC doors being sold with

    locks that simply arent secure.

    Glazerites decision to tackle this

    problem through the incorporation, as

standard, of the UKs safest lock has

to be applauded and I hope others will

    quickly follow suit.

Avocets ABS lock is the only retrot

product in the country to be both TS007

3-star rated and hold Sold Secures

    SS312 Diamond accreditation the

latter being awarded only after the

    most strenuous and up-to-date testing

procedure in the UK. A process that the

lock has to undergo every 12-months in

    order to retain the accreditation.

    Jason Thompson, a Glazerite director,

added: It doesnt matter how many

hooks and bolts your door has, the Euro

cylinder is the weakest link. Burglars

are aware of this weakness and lock-

snapping break-ins are rising as a result.

The ABS cylinders not only oer a

higher level of security than our previous

cylinders, they also qualify for the SBD

    and Maco Secure PLUS accreditations

without the need for a separate cylinder

    guard or security door handle.

The ABS locks feature anti bump,

snap, pick and drill technology, and

    incorporate a unique patented snap

    secure locking technology, which allows

sacricial sections to break o during an

attack, leaving the door fully secure, but

    openable by key afterwards.

We know from trade and consumer

feedback that security is getting higher

    on householders and businesses list

of priorities in choosing windows and

doors so we want to be sure our trade

customers are fully armed to meet and

    HARDWARE

    GLASS & GLAZING

    When looking for the perfect

door handle to use on your

    doors, there are currently many

    options available in the market.

However there are very few door

handles available that match the quality,

security and price of the newly released

UAP high security 2* Kitemarked doorhandles, which are available in both short

    backplate and long backplate versions.

David Jennings, MD of UAP, says When

we were in the design process for the

high security handles, we were very aware

that we wanted to oer the fabricators

a door handle that was high quality and

    ergonomically designed, whilst at the

same time eliminating the need to t a

cylinder guard to achieve 3* security. We

also wanted an easy to t handle which

can be used by the professional installeroering a security upgrade service.

The UAP high security 2* Kitemarked

door handles have been packed with

state of the art features, which are not

found on other door handles. When

looking at the handles, the rst thing you

will notice is the blind cylinder end, which

covers up the cylinder chamber and only

leaves the key hole visible. This has been

designed to act as an integrated cylinder

guard to protect the cylinder from drilling

attacks. The blind end also ensures that

there is no way the cylinder can protrude

on the outside of the door, and leave the

cylinder vulnerable to lock snapping - a

    very common burglary method.

Combining the UAP 2* security door

handle with the UAP 1* cylinders will give

you a professionally looking 3* security

solution for PAS24 doors. UAP have also

    developed a specially sized 30/35 (65mm)

cylinder which is the perfect size cylinder

to use on 44mm door blanks with the

    UAP high security door handles!

A second and very unique feature on theUAP door handles is the self-adhesive

tabs which are used on the back of both

the internal and external handles. The

tabs are made from highly industrial

closed cell foam tape, and are extremely

strong once they have set on the door.

The self-adhesive tabs are designed to

not only assist with easy tting, but they

are also an important security feature

which helps to further strengthen the

    door handle against possible attacks.

The tabs also give water penetrationresistance between the door and the

    handle, greatly preventing corrosion,

    discolouration and premature aging.

    David continues, We have also

    concentrated heavily on the materials

used to make the door handles. Our Gold

Anodised, Silver Anodised, Black and White

nishes are made from aero-space grade

Aluminium, making these handles truly out

of this World! With these nishes, we oer

a 5 year inland coating guarantee, and also

a 10 year colour fast guarantee, meaningthat the nishes will not start to fade.

We also know the current trend is towards

High Gloss Gold and Chrome nishes and

we wanted to provide the fabricator with

a t and forget option, meaning that the

handle can be tted and then forgotten

about without the worry of the handle

pitting or rusting in the future which is the

downfall of many handles. With this in

mind, we developed the Nanocoast high

security handles, available in PVD Gold,

Mirror Polished and Satin Stainless Steelnishes. These handles are made out of

304 grade Stainless Steel, and have been

salt spray test to ASTM B117 for 2,000+

hours! These handles are ideal for the

    coast, where there are

high levels of salt in the

    air which very quickly rust

    and begin to pit inferior

    metals such as Zinc and

    Brass based products.

    304 grade Stainless

    Steel has good nickel

content, and due to thisit has excellent corrosion

    and oxidation resistance

    in a wide variety of

    environments. With the in

    mind, these Nanocoast

    door handles come

with an Industry First LIFETIME Coating

    Guarantee ANYWHERE in the Country!

The door handles can be converted to be

sprung or unsprung. The spring inside the

handle can easily be removed to make

the handle unsprung. Each door handlecan also be colour matched and suited to

other products in the UAP range, so you

can oer your customers a fully suited

    door hardware solution. This includes

    door knockers, door viewers, letterplates

including the brand new iPlate, letterplate

shrouds, numerals and letters, and identity

card slots in seven dierent nishes!

David concludes, We believe the UAP

high security 2* Kitemarked door handles

are one of the highest quality and most

secure door handles available. Theprice points on these door handles are

    extremely competitive, even against

standard door handles made from inferior

whole range in both short backplate and

long backplate versions, and are ready to

    HARDWARE

    GLASS & GLAZING

    The leaves are falling, the

    temperatures are dropping,

and the nights are drawing in(as well as stretching out into

    the morning, but nobody ever

mentions that). Yes love it or

hate it, winters on its way, and

    strolling hand-in-hand with it is

    the annual rise in break-ins.

MyTrade TV talks to Raymond Pearce,

Avocet Hardwares head of UK sales

(ABS snap-secure locks), about why you

even more care should be taken withhome security during the winter months.

Quite frankly the most depressing part

about winter isnt the getting up in the

dark; the getting home in the dark; or

even the wrong kind of leaves on the

tracks, said Raymond. Its the fact that

every single year the police report a rise in

the number of break-ins with criminals

rubbing their hands in glee and making

the most of the long dark nights and the

kind of lax home security that really should

have been stamped out by now.

Every year at this time, newspapers and

magazines are full of articles on home

security and the steps that need to be

taken in order to protect your home for

winter. Yet every year breaks-ins rise and

even more people become just another

    crime statistic.

And the reason? Its the good old it

wont happen to me attitude that so

many of us hold dear, until, of course, it

does happen. But why wait? Why suer

    that heart-breaking moment when you

walk into your house or even down your

stairs in the morning to nd youve been

broken into? Or experience that sinking

feeling when you realise whats been

taken and what can never be replaced.

We all have home insurance policies,

which amongst other things, cover thecost of replacing items that could well

be damaged or stolen during a burglary.

But why do so many people stop there?

Why dont they take the steps needed

to signicantly reduce the odds of their

homes being entered and these items

being stolen in the rst place?

Its not like it costs the earth at least

if you do things sensibly as opposed to

employing snipers in gun towers to take

out anyone or anything entering your

garden. First and foremost, locks on

doors and windows should be upgraded

to protect against forced entry and

we have the idea solution in the form of

our ABS snap-secure lock, which is the

safest solutions currently available on the

    market.

There are a lot of dierent snap-secure

locks available, but ABS is the only one

that passes all the tests needed to haveboth a 3-star rating according to BSIs

    TS007 standard, and Sold Secures

    SS312 Diamond accreditation.

As well as locks, external security

    lighting should be installed and

    operational, and an alarm system

    installed. While common sense practices

like not leaving keys lying around or even

in doors, shutting all windows when you

leave the house and leaving lights on

when you go out you, should become

    regular practices.

And, of course, make sure you dont

forget about garages or sheds either.

Quite often the contents of these

    buildings are worth a considerable

sum and quite often their security is

neglected. Make sure the shed is always

secured with a good quality padlock and

    the garage is locked.

These steps might not stop the most

determined of burglars, but the thing that

needs to be remembered is that mostburglaries are opportunistic crimes. And

by removing the easy and obvious ways

into your home then you really are taking

great strides in stopping yourself and

    your family becoming victims.

So this winter, make sure you only have to

moan about the dark, the cold and the trains

being delayed because the wind is blowing

in the wrong direction, and not about the

fact youve been broken into. Heed the

winter warnings, protect your home and

hopefully come spring the annual rise inbreak-ins could well be old news.

    CONSERVATORIES

    GLASS & GLAZING

The success of Synseals Orangery Collectionkeeps on growing, with installations taking place

    throughout the UK.

One of the latest examples of this success is the installation of

an Integra parapet wall style orangery in Lancashire. The choice

of the Integra orangery design was driven by a desire from the

homeowner to have an installation that would most closely achieve

the look and feel of a fully brick-built extension, while still beneting

from the extra light that comes from having an overhead glass roof.

The Integra is unique in todays marketplace in that the

concealed lantern roof is designed to t neatly behind the

parapet wall for a very traditional orangery look, with nodecorative external sot or guttering system showing.

Networks UPVC was identied by the homeowner via K2s online

directory. They carried out the full installation, with the Integra

orangery components being supplied by local K2 fabricator

partner Premier Conservatories Supplies, based in Bolton.

Peter Marsden, owner of Networks UPVC Ltd, commented: Our

customer was extremely pleased with the nished product. The

inside is airy and light, and has completely transformed this area

of the house. We found the Integra kit very easy to install, saving

us several days of installation in comparison to other solutions.

In addition, our K2 fabricator, Premier Conservatory Supplies,

was on hand to guide us through the installation of the orangery,

which was done in less than 4 hours, thanks to everything being

supplied cut to size and ready to use. There is no doubt that

to see the frame in situ is very impressive; it really shows the

strength and durability of the structural orangery system.

Premier Conservatories Supplies Sales Director, Andrew Buglass

added: Historically we have mainly supplied Rio at-roofed

orangeries, so this new experience of supplying an Integra was

extremely benecial to our business. The Orangery Collection

has been engineered specically to use the same core structural

design, with slight variations allowing for signicant changes in

the aesthetic look of each of the styles. I personally attended

the build on site and it was good to see this new Integra quickly

taking shape. The completed job features an impressive internal

sot and certainly looks the business, inside and out.

The technical versatility of the Orangery Collection, combinedwith its multi-purpose engineering, means that retailing installers

do not need to promote just one of the styles but can market

the whole of the range with condence. The structural nature of

the system also means that wide span orangery project designs

can be created, without the need for additional and costly portal

    frame support.

Installers can allow their homeowner customer prospects to

choose from Synseals selection of Orangery Collection styles,

safe in the knowledge that the installation team will be able

to handle the job on site to perfection thanks to the common

design features deployed right across the range.

    MACHINERY

    GLASS & GLAZING

    Livingston based Veka

    fabricator Stevenswood Ltd

    have recently taken delivery

    of a Stuga ZX4 sawing &

    machining center. This is the

    third Stuga Stevenswood

have purchased in the last ten

years and it is the reliability,

performance and back-upthat has led them from the

    rst Flowline in 2005 to a ZX3

in 2010 and now a top of the

range ZX4 with an output in

    excess of 800 windows per

    week.

    Stevenswood are convinced that the

design and layout of the Stuga ZX

machines is perfect for their needs and

the back-up they get is paramount. The

    Stuga machines utilize rotary tooling

    creating exceptional three hundred and

    sixty exibility for optimal programming

of operations prep by prep and prole

by prole. The U shape footprint

    conguration also allows one operator

to run the machine most of the time,

something that cant eciently be done

on machines with a straight line footprint

of 20m or more where two operators are

always needed to get maximum output.

    STEVENSWOOD TAKEDELIVERY OF STUGA ZX4

In addition notching on both sides of a

    prole and self centralised arrow-heading

are extremely useful benets that not all

    machines can oer.

The new ZX4 was delivered to the

    recently acquired 55,000 square foot

factory where the other two Stugas

have been moved. This brings all of

    Stevenswoods business that was spread

over 6 separate units with a total space

of 28,000 square foot under one roof. The

total investment in the move has already

cost 1.7m. As a result of the increase in

production created by the ZX4 purchase

along with more welding and cleaning kit

Stevenswood have been able to increase

production to 900 plus windows per week

so far and plan to ramp this up to 1,500

per week in the near future.

As well as the historic track record of

    the machines Stevenswood enjoy the

way Stuga service works as a sawing &

machining center is only ever as good as

the back-up behind it. The huge amount

of work and operations these machines

carry out there is always the chance of

    operator error, accidental damage and

shear wear and tear but this isnt a major

problem if the fabricator can make a

quick call to either get a x or book an

engineer. There also needs to be enough

engineering resource to know that it isnt

going to take more than a day to get a

technician in when needed. Stuga can

provide this level of service in Scotland

just the same as in any other part of the

    country and do it consistently.

Field service is only as good as what is

behind it and this is where Stuga scores

again with a fully staed Norfolk based

Service Center that can analyse faults

through phone and internet and either x

at a distance or dispatch a eld engineer

and coordinate any required spare parts

immediately. It is a total commitment to

have a technician always available at the

end of a phone but that is what Stugas

    top customers like Stevenswood demand

    and expect.

Stugas mission is to give their customers

    throughout the United Kingdom and

Ireland a rst class support experience so

that they will come back for more in the

future just like Stevenswood and many

    others.

    Trade fabricator Goldstar Trade

    Frames has recently invested

    in two pieces of automation

    machinery that has enabled

it to become one of the most

    ecient manufacturers in the

    business. The company now

    manufactures in excess of 250

frames a week with fewer thanve people.

Goldstar has invested in a new SMR-

4 welder and an SVK2 corner cleaner

from Haner Murat. Mark Simms of

Goldstar said, We invested in a Haner

SBA 2 machining centre at the start

of the recession. We were impressed

with the quality of the machinery and,

just as importantly, the quality of the

advice we received. The investment we

made helped us ride out the peaks and

troughs of the recession with minimum

sta. So when the time came to make a

new investment, we had no hesitation in

    turning to Haner.

In the SMR-4 welder and the SVK2

corner cleaner, Goldstar has made two

    extremely sound investments. Quite

simply, the SMR-4 is the fastest and most

accurate welder on the market today.

Alongside a wealth of other benets,

the machines key selling point is the

    automatic self centering of transom

and mullions, which ensures 90 degreetransom welding even with uneven arrow

heads. What this means in practice is

that welding can be undertaken without

the need for a skilled operator. The SVK-

2 CNC corner and transom cleaning

    machine oers superb exibility. Suitable

for bevel and radius proles, its a two

    axis machine thats fully programmable

for both white and woodgrain proles.

It has automatic prole recognition and

comes with a rotary tool post for radius

and internal cleaning with groove andwoodgrain knives as standard. Both

machines come with a two year part and

labour warranty for complete peace of

    mind.

As well as increasing capacity without

    increasing overhead, the two machines

will also help Goldstar to increase the

accuracy of their output. Mark said, The

machines have only just gone in, but

were delighted with what theyve added

so far. Haners expertise has once

again been invaluable and we know fromprevious experience that their level of

    after-sales service is exceptional.

    Founded in 1991, Goldstar manufactures

    PVC-u windows and doors, bi-fold

    doors, French doors, conservatories

and composite doors. The company has

a reputation for providing quality and

service a reputation that looks set to

be enhanced as a result of this latest

    investment!

    NFA

    GLASS & GLAZING

Were right in the meaty part of voting in this

years National Fenestration Awards and the

competition in all categories is heating up nicely!

The NFAs have passed two important milestones in the past

few weeks. Firstly, the number of registered users has roared

past the magic 1000 barrier. This isnt just a number, but a clear

and impressive representation of the number and diversity

of the people taking part in these unique awards. Within that

1000+ people are representatives from the timber, PVC, steel, aluminium, conservatory roof, fabrication, sysco, glass and many

other sectors. This level of engagement is what has made these

    awards truly representative.

The second milestone of note is the number of votes cast. The

number is already way past the level of votes in 2013, and with

weeks still left to go, the nal number could be enormous!

At the time of writing, there will be just over 5 weeks left for

people to cast their votes. For those who are not yet registered,

taking part is incredibly simple. Go to www.fenestrationawards.

co.uk to register and be part of something revolutionary!

LINIAR ANNOUNCED AS COOL WALL SPONSORS

Popular industry extruders Liniar have been announced as

ocial Cool Wall sponsors in the last few weeks.

They are to work with the National Fenestration Awards on what

has become one of its most well known features right up until

the end of 2016, securing what is set to become a successful

and fruitful partnership both for Liniar and the NFAs.

Marketing Director Sue Davenport explains: The Cool Wall is

a great way to showcase some of the gorgeous work we know

installers are proud of and as its online, its easy to vote for a

winner. The sponsorship agreement will see Liniar increase its

online presence and we look forward to working more closely

with the NFA to maximise the potential of this opportunity.

With Liniar on board, and some very high quality installations

on display, the Cool Wall looks set to get even bigger over the

    coming years.

GQA QUALIFICATIONS ANNOUNCED AS SECOND MAIN

    EVENT SPONSOR

Continuing a busy period for the NFAs, long term award

supporter GQA Qualications have been announced as the

    second main event sponsor.

GQA Qualications have been the longest supporter of the

National Fenestration Awards, and it is that support which

has helped the awards get o the ground and become an

    established and exciting industry scheme.

Speaking about the awards and becoming a Main Event

sponsor, Mick Clayton, CEO of GQA, said: I have seen the

awards grow from the initial idea and launch into what is now a

prominent industry recognition initiative and Im delighted to be

able to continue our support of Jason and his team at the NFAs.

The Awards event planned is something dierent to the norm,

highlighting the creativity and dierent thinking within the team,

and giving a tting conclusion to the nomination and voting

    process

With only 6 Main Event sponsor slots, and two already taken,

the remaining four prestigious places are sure to be lled very

quickly. To nd out more about this, contact the team atinfo@

    fenestrationawards.co.uk.

    PARTNERSHIP WITH WINDOWBASE BRINGS STEEL

    INDUSTRY AWARENESS

Industry data specialists and NFA partners Windowbase have

helped the awards gain new awareness to other parts of the UK

fenestration sector, namely the steel sector.

By working with Windowbase the NFAs have been able to

promote themselves to a much wider selection of the UK

fenestration industry. It has allowed people who had not

previously known about the awards to become familiar with the

name, what the awards are and what they stand for. In fact itthis partnership which lead to one of the companies in the steel

category make it through to the nal voting phase.

After speaking with Clement Windows, an installation business

in the steel sector of our industry, it turns out that they found out

about the awards after being sent one of the NFAs regular email

updates to the industry. From there they went to the main NFA

site and decided that this was something they would like to be

part of. They said that if they had not got the email, they would

not have known about the awards and would not have been part

    of them at this stage.

There is still plenty of time to take part and help make your mark

in this years National Fenestration Awards.

Go to www.fenestrationawards.co.ukto nd out more and

help reward some very deserving UK fenestration people and

    businesses!
