Mystery film is a subgenre of the more general category of crime film and at times the thriller genre, mystery and crime can be traced back to Ancient Greece, where playwrights like Sophocles and Euripides enthralled the local citizenry with their plays combining mystery and drama.

Mystery and crime stories as we know them today did not emerge until the mid-nineteenth century when Edgar Allan Poe introduced mystery fiction's first fictional detective, Auguste C. Dupin, in his 1841 story. "The muderers in the rue morgue”.

Crime stories have been with us at least since Cain killed Abel in the Bible, yet Sherlock Holmes is considered the father of what is known as the classic "Golden Age" of English murder mystery.

Iconography is an important aspect of genre. We expect to see certain objects

on screen when we see a particular genre, For example in Mystery films we expect to see evidence and clues that the detective finds a long the way, we

also expect in a usually mystery film/show to have a base where they

conclude on the truth i.e police station. In mystery films its common to find

music with high suspense as it contributes to the intensity to the scene

fro the audience.
