Sound is known as 'nada' in Sanskrit. Thereare two types of sound. One is created or caused sound. It is caused by fric-tion, by two things rubbing together or dashingagainst each other. The second type is 'anahat'or uncaused sound.
In caused sound, there are two principleswhich creates a third. This is the theory of cre-ation. At least two things are needed to createsomething. Sounds is the first manifestation ofdivine energy. How did the cosmos come intoexistence? There must have been one forcewhich split into two which then created a third. From these three forces everything both seenand unseen was created. We are are able toknow about these through the five senses.
The five senses are known by the five elements. These are:
1. Earth - can be cognized by all five senses
2. Water - can be heard, felt, seen and tasted
3. Fire – can be heard, felt and seen4. Air - can be heard and felt5. Ether, Sky – can be only heard
Earth has five qualities, water has four, fire hasthree, air has two and sky has only the one qual-ity, that of sound. Beyond that, we have no ideaas it is beyond the human range.
Sound was the first manifestation of God'senergy. Sky with the quality of sound was thefirst thing that manifested. Later air manifest-ed. Sky was subtle, formless, weightless. It con-denses itself and became what we call atmos-phere, ionosphere, air. After air came fire, heat. When fire or hot gas cooled down, therewas water. When water condensed itself, itbecame solid rock and stone.
In the Bible it says God created the earth inseven days. The occult meaning of this is theseven planes of existence. There are five planeswithin our senses and two beyond, that is theastral or heaven plane. The astral plane andbeyond have their own nature.
Sound and the five elements were born outof one subtle element called 'maha tattwa,' orgreat element. That great element had threeproperties. One was pure in nature (satogun),the second was active in nature (rajogun), thethird was dull in nature or crude (tamogun).
Out of the gross, crude quality this universewas formed, therefore we have everything

concrete or visible or within the range of thesenses. If it was satogun, we wouldn't be ableto see it. It wouldn't need to be concrete, solid or crude.
The people living in the heaven world aredifferent. In dreams our consciousness is notsubject to the five elements. When we runand fall in dreams, we are not hurt. When wekill somebody in a dream, he's not really killed. Our experience there is subtle, whereas herewe are subject to the nature of the five ele-ments.
The first manifestation of cosmic energywas sky with its quality of sound. Sound cantravel anywhere. It is supposed to be immor-tal, indestructible. In Sanskrit a letter of thealphabet is known as 'akshar' which meansindestructible. A consonant is known as VarnaMala - a garland of colors. Now science haslearnt that sound has colors and that soundcan never be destroyed. The pattern is alwaysin the atmosphere. Time is elastic. It can bestretched or condensed. In a tape recorder orfilm, time is condensed.
Everything has its own perspective. Theworld has many dimensions like a prism. Itdepends on how you look at it. The sankyayogis see the world one way, mathematicianssee the world as numbers, painters see theworld as colors. Everybody sees the world adifferent way. One way of thinking says thateverything is sound. Sound is the quality ofcreation. The whole creation is governed bysound. Everything is a sound vibration. We aredancing on the rhythm of sound. This isShiva's dance. The earth is dancing, the wavesare dancing, the moon is dancing. There is arhythm everywhere governing all our lives and governing the planets.
Even in complete silence you can hearsound. It is a very loud roaring noise - thesound of silence. When the mind is one-point-ed or full of love and devotion, you can hearsound in your ears. When you have purity ofmind, or are in a high state of meditation, mind is more receptive to astral things andyou can hear these sounds.
One can also listen to the internal sound by plugging the ears. There are several notes.
The first is like a cricket, then you will hearsilver bells; when you meditate higher andhigher you can distinguish these notes whichare coming from astral planes. There areseven planes and seven notes are related tothose planes.
Mantra or sound can control the universe. The world is being ruled by words. We are lis-tening to the power of words. Sound is so pow-erful that it moves the body. We need words. If no word is spoken to us, we are unhappy.Food is not enough. A word can revive life. A word can take life away. Every law is a word.Every communication is a word. We live bywords. We sustain ourselves by words.
