complexity. The
titling usually usesa big font to make
it stand out to the
audience and so
they know for
sure what the film
is titled, and from
this they may be
able to guess what
the film is about
or will touch
upon. Typically,thriller title
sequences are
normally very
complex and
complicated; this
is to signify that
the film will not
be simplistic or
easy to
understand. This
is especially
visible in
psychological
thrillers, as it is
usually about a
conflict in a
characters mind,
so this is
foreshadowed
even before the
film has started bythe use of titling.
For our film, we
used white onblack so that our
film would speak
for itself, and to
show that even
though it seems
simple at first, it
will get more
complex as you
watch further on.
This is also tosustain ambiguity;
so that the
audience wouldntparticularly know
what genre of film
this is, effectively
creating tension
and suspense
throughout the
audience. The
white on blacktitling also fades
over the actual
film as soon as it
appears; this
paired with our
title of The
Unexpectedmakes the pace
seem very fluid,
which forces the
audience to
quickly take in the
title and the way it
was presented
onscreen as soon
as the actual film
starts. We also

This is similar to
the psychologicalthriller Memento,
as it opens over a
person holding a
Polaroid and
waiting for it to
dry. This is similar
to our media
product as the
titles appear over
the film. However,it is also different
as it fits the
conventions of a
psychological
thrillers titlingsequence of being
vague, and the use
of red in the
picture
representing
blood, anger orpassion. The font
used is blue,
which is not
conventional in a
psychological
thriller, but could
represent
coldness and a
clinical feel to the
film. This could be
compared to our
use of the black
background, as it
is minimalistic
and does not give
out much
information.
However, our film
also differs from
Memento as

portrayed by
letting the
audience in, in the
sense that the film

Camera

track, crab, crane
Typical thrillers
implement the
panning, tracking,
crabbing, and
craning shots as
they all help in
contributing
towards
portrayingdisequilibrium
throughout the
film. They are
used as it follows
the characters
around, and it
allows the
audience to see
what is going on
to make them feel
included. A typical
convention of a
psychological
thriller is that the
occurrences that
happen to the
characters are
usually realistic
and this creates
suspense and
tension in theaudience as they
In our media
product, we used
a panning shot
when the female
character is riding
her bike across
the screen. This
gives the sense to
the audience thatthey are actually
onscreen with her
and are
experiencing what
will happen with
her. The tracking
shot we used was
in the point of
view scene when
the female
character is riding
down the road.
We achieved this
by attaching our
camera to the
bike, to give a
gritty sense of
realism and to feel
like because they
are watching it,
they are actuallyriding the bike
An example of
when a panning
shot is used in a
psychological
thriller is in The
Prestige. This is
effective as the film
begins with a zoom
onto many top hatson the ground
covered with dark
autumn leaves.
This is effective as
this film could be
any genre of film
which supports the
fact that
psychological
thrillers are
supposed to beambiguous and that
they do not give
too much away.
The Prestige then
cuts to a scene
where it pans
across little chicks
in cages. This
further tells us that
even though the
film does not
specify what it is, it

themselves,

is likely to be a
thriller as it has the
conventions of
being vague and
mysterious to the
audience; whichmakes them feel
that they are not
involved in what is
going on, therefore
creating tension
and suspense
throughout the
audience, which is
pleasurable to them
in what they expect
in watching apsychological
thriller.
Framing a shot-
ECU CU MS LS ELS
Thrillers tend to
incorporate close
ups and long shots
a lot, as they both
juxtapose each
other and could
represent the
change in focusfrom the plot to
developing
further on a
character. Close
ups are usually
implemented so
we can see what is
going on clearly
on a charactersface and their
state of mind,making the
audience feel
included which
gives them a sense
of familiarity. This
then creates fear
and suspense in
the audience, as
they now feel it
could happen tothem. Long shots
We used an extra
long shot to
establish where
the female
character was in
the film so it was
clear to the
audience. We alsoused close ups of
the male
characters face toconnote the fact
that he is sinister
and to forewarn
the audience that
he is presented as
bad.
In the
psychological
thriller Frozen,
medium shots and
long shots are
used to represent
that everything is
normal and thereis no sense of
disequilibrium
yet. But when the
film uses close ups
and extreme close
ups it is clear that
this is to signify
the fact that there
is a disequilibrium
about to happen.
This is done byfocusing on the
machinery that
the skiers will
later get stuck on,
such as the ski-lift
to foreshadow
what will happen
later on in the
film.

are usually used
to distinguish
something
significant, but
can also be used
to create distancebetween the film
and the audiencesawareness of
what is going on.
This creates
suspense.
Camera angle
high or low
Thrillers use high
or low camera
angles to capture
the dominance orthe weakness of a
character. The
angles represent
the power or
status a person
has over someone
else.
Our film used this
technique to
present the male
charactersdominance overthe female
character when
she has fallen
down and hurt
herself, he uses
this excuse to
touch her and
almost control
her. He towers
over her, and hasall the power in
that scene.
An example of a
film that uses
these angles is
The Beach, apsychological
thriller in which
the male character
who still has
sanity is
positioned in a
higher angle
compared to the
other male
character who has
lost control of hismind. This shows
that he is more
dominant, and
aware of himself,
so is naturally
more superior.
Mise-en-scene Thrillers tend to
use a house as
their setting, as it
is what is natural
that makes it all
the more scary,
and creates fear
and tension
throughout the
audience as it
what is familiar.
In our film, it
begins with the
female character
coming out of her
house which
means that even
though we did use
the conventional
setting for a
thriller, we did not
keep her in the
house which
signifies to the
audience that
there will be otherlocations. This
In the

Editing jumpcuts, match cuts,
reverse shots,
cutting rhythm
Thrillers use a
variety of editing
to make the film
seem fluid and so
it flows. Editing
makes the film
seem more
professional and
slick.
Our film
incorporates a lot
of editing; we
used match cuts
and reverse shots
to give the film
diversity and to
make it seem
proficient enough.
The psychological
thriller The Cell,
uses many jump
cuts and match
cuts. This is
effective in
making the film
feel fast-paced, in
turn creating
tension andsuspense in the
audience
throughout the
film.
Sound Usually thrillers
use non-diegetic
sounds in the
form of
soundtracks or
background
noises. This iseffective as it
normally
foreshadows what
will happen next.
Our soundtrack
complemented
what was going on
onscreen and
fitted the impact

to ride her bike.

Narrative theory Psychological
thrillers usually
feature the
hermeneutic code
and the Enigma
code, to conveyconfusion
throughout the
audience and
binary opposites
to highlight the
differences
between two
different
characters or
themes.
Our film
implemented the
hermeneutic code
to create suspense
and tension
throughout theaudience in the
scenes when he
female character
falls down and
when the opening
two minutes end,
as it leaves it on
an unfinished
note, creating
tension in the
audience.
In the
psychological
thriller Inception
when the male
character is
washed up on thebeach this
creates suspense
in the audience as
it generates
questions such as
who is this man
and why is he on a
beach?
