Food and feed ingredients can have an unexpected effect on the gut microbiome (e.g. trehalose)

Soil and plants microbiomes can potentially increase crop productivity and restore soil fertility.

Behaviour, obesity and many NCD are increasingly being associated to the gut microbiome. This can be modulated via diets to improve health.

Communities ofmicroorganismscan convertfood wasteinto addedvalue productscontributing to circularity.

CSA for Microbiome Coordination andSupport of the IBF

➢ The CSA is expected to start on November 2018. It has a budget ofover € 3 million.

➢ The CSA is expected to improve the international cooperation ofbioeconomy research programmes and also:

❖ Establish international networks that bring together all relevantstakeholders to foster the exchange of knowledge and increasecollaborations (scientific and policy related).

❖ Contribute to bringing coherence across EU and internationalapproaches (standards, methodologies, practices, definition, etc).

❖ Support the IBF Secretariat.

New Horizon 2020 projects on FoodSystems Microbiome

➢ 4 Innovation Actions (IAs) will start between November2018 and January 2019.

➢ Each IA has a budget of ~ € 10 million (total investment of€ 40 million).

➢ The projects are expected to develop new microbiome-based applications for sustainable food systems.

➢ Different areas will be covered including: soil and marinemicrobiomes for improved agriculture and aquaculture, foodand feed products and services, big data management.

Relevant Horizon 2020 topics for 2019

➢ LC-SFS-17-2019: Alternative proteins for food and feedIA – indicative budget per proposal: € 8 million

➢ CE-SFS-24-2019: Innovative and citizen-driven foodsystem approaches in cities

IA - indicative budget per proposal : € 7.5

➢ SFS-11-2018-2019: Anti-microbials and animal productionIA - indicative budget per proposal : € 6 millionDevelopment of alternatives to anti-microbials infarmed animal production, e.g. modulation of hostimmunity and/or microbial flora, feed additives ornovel molecules.
