Local residents said that a good number of sparrows descend on this area every day, to feed. In times when sparrows are rarely seen in the city, the sight of so many sparrows makes good news.

How many Mylaporeans have explored a church that is celebrating 175 years today - which stands in this neighborhood?
Now here in an opportu-nity to do so on August 26.
St. Thomas English Church (STEC), once known as ‘St. Thomas-by-the-Sea’ by the British, is the oldest Prot-estant church in San Thome.
The Church owes its origin to the arrival of Robert Carver in 1824, a dynamic Methodist missionary from Ceylon who ministered in the area and earned the goodwill of people and to the then Gov-ernor of Madras at Fort St. George, Sir Thomas Munro.
This church was built and consecrated in 1842 at a time

when the area had a fairly large number of European residents. It became the church of the Protestant elite in Madras who lived in the garden-houses of Adyar, and the governor often worshipped here.
When Robert Carver died in 1845, he was buried under the altar at this church which stands of San Thome High Road. Today, STEC is a thriv-ing Anglican Church under the ‘Church of South India’, with a small but vibrant congregation.
Fabiola Jacob and her col-leagues at this church intend to take guests this Satur-day evening on a journey of the past and of the present. They plan to indicate the
vintage spots and relics of the church even as they narrate stories that make its history.
The Walk is open to all; guests must report at the church campus ( south of the San Thome Cathedral) by 4.15 p.m.

Aadi!Aadi celebrations in the
Mylapore continue. And in and around the amman temples, they are big and grand and loud.
This past week, the fire walking ritual in the environs of Sri Mundaga-kannai Amman Temple in Mylapore drew over 500 people.
August 20 morning.A bunch of men dropped
burning coals on the mud and tar surface just outside the gate of the Amman tem-ple; traffic on this busy road had been closed and people massed up quickly.
To the wave of prayers and chants, men and women walked into the coal fire stretch, some 15 feet long, some in a trance. Some women carried their babies in their hands. Some men deliberated on the burning coals.
The ritual was over quickly and prasadam was given to all who had assembled here.

Have you taken a close look at some of the sculptures of Sri Kapali Temple?
Here is one that may surprise you.
A cheeky sculptor who chiseled furtively, a beautiful sculpture of Bharat matha.
It is seen in the dhwajaro-hana mandapam of this temple.
On one of the Mylapore temple walks with historian Venkatesh Ramakrishnan, we came across this wonderful sculpture. It is an exact replica of a wall poster printed by Nagpur City Press - the Bharat Matha with a crown on her flow-ing hair, clad in a saree, resting her left hand on a seated, decorated elephant, her right hand holding a trishul, tied to which is the tricolor flag.
It is interesting to note that the mandapam was a later addition to the temple, built in 1939, by Kaatu-palli Paiyur K. N. Shanmuga Mudaliar.
That was when India’s freedom struggle was at its peak and the world was at the threshold or probably had entered World War II.
The sculptor who did the work proved his love for the motherland, undetected under the watchful eyes of the British, with this sculpture.

S. M. Sundaram passed away on August 18.
SMS as he was affectionately called, was a resident of Desika Road for 80 years. Sundaram was the fourth son of late K. R. Sundaram, founder of Enfield India Ltd.
He was an industrialist and was instrumental in starting and running
many auto ancillary units in Guindy and Ambattur, supply-ing components to all car and motorcycle manufacturers in India. He was a former President of Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturer’s Association.
He was a charter member and Past President of Rotary club of Madras West. Sundaram was the longest serving Trustee of P.S. Educational Society and played a crucial role in turning around the fortunes of P.S. High school that produced many stalwarts. He played an important role in starting P.S. Senior Secondary School at Mylapore.
A diehard fan of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Sundaram was a former Vice President of The Music Academy and founder of Shri K. R. Sundaram Iyer Music Trust that helped launch many musicians.
He was a good club-level tennis player and played tennis for many decades at both Mylapore Club and Madras Cricket Club. He leaves behind his wife Lalitha Sundaram, son Bhargav Sundaram and daughter in law Priya, daughter Shanta Raghunath and son-in-law Raghunath Narayanan, grand children and great grand children.

Bad experience at Triplicane Ratna CafeI went over to the newly-opened Triplicane Ratna Cafe which
has opened in South Mada street and had a bad experience.For 20 minutes, there was no sign of a server.Ratna Cafe can be a famous chain of restaurants but this form
of service will do no good to their reputation. Even my neighbour who sat down later got his plate of snacks quickly and not me!

What can be said about the condition of Bishop Wallers Av-enue South at Alwarpet?
All kinds of unlawful activities happen there. Cars are parked there illegally and people drink behind them and throw the bottles there at night. If they are questioned, they get violent. People who sleep under the flyover also defecate there.
People need to be conscious of the fact that there is a church and a pre-school nearby. This is a health hazard for the toddlers who study there. There is no garbage bin here and there is garbage on the road always.

‘Free’ pavements around Saibaba Temple
Kudos to the Mylapore MLA and the former DCP for making Mada Streets pedestrian-friendly: I hope the same condition is main-tained. Similar efforts are required to make the pave-ments leading to Sai Baba temple pedestrian friendly.

Guests to our area often get confused due to the absence of this board.

6 a.m.Broadway.The bells of a church come alive. The first call to
Sunday service.Old, old buildings stand still like aged people, holding up
in the unseasonal rain. Minerva Press still looks majestic in torn garments.
Up north is Mannady.At the head of a street corner, is a huge crowd. A police
patrol van, its blue-and-red lights flashing. And three bored men in uniform. The local tea shop is crowded.
We walk into the crowd and further.And walk into a street market.On one side, they are selling birds. The hawkers look
away as we shoot pictures. Are they looking guilty?One another side, they are selling fowl. Further down, they are selling all sorts of things. Some
from small shops, some on the street.Is this a street market of Sundays? Is this a vestige of an
older market of this old part of the city?Nobody has the time to answer questions when this is the
time to sell and make money.City Markets. This was the theme for this year’s edition of
the annual Heritage of Chennai power-point project contest for city schools.
Mannady did not trigger the subject. A regular guest at the contest suggested the theme.
Twelve schools came up with fascinating stories.And the winner, AMM School of Kotturpuram bagged the
rolling trophy for the team’s research on the markets of Saidapet.
The trio had gone to the bustling market at 7 a.m. and stayed on for a few hours to capture the life at that early hour.
They learnt how fish at this famed fish market was brought here from different parts of the state and outside. How it was transported, auctioned and sold to big and small retailers.
They learnt how land belonging to a temple came to be a market of the city. They located foundation stones that helped them highlight a slice of history. And they spoke to shop-owners and the man who has leased the space to learn more about this market.
Had the trio spent more time and dug deeper the team would have presented a better story.

and appreciate. But given the limited scope and time that our schools provide for such highly educative projects, most presentations skimmed the surface.
The children liked the experience though.Now they know a little more about their area.

STAFF HONOURED AT M. CT. M SCHOOL’S FOUNDER’S DAY EVENT
R. A. PURAM PARK GETS FITNESS EQUIPMENT
In response to the residents’ demand for an outdoor fitness gym, the members of R. A. Puram Residents’ Association (RAPRA) have fitted four outdoor fitness equipments at the Corporation Park at 7th Main Road, R. A. Puram. It was inaugurated on Aug 14 by Sundera-jan, corporation area engineer, division 123. Dr. R. Chan-drasekaran, president, RAPRA says, “Four pits were dug on
Aug 13, for a warm up ma-chine, an air walker, a leg press and a hip twister.
After the equipment was installed, concrete was poured. Residents started using the equipment from Aug. 17”.
The two day science ex-hibition hosted by Chettinad Vidyashram, R. A. Puram last weekend was nothing less than a talent show.
The experiments held and demonstrations given were all about resources that need-ed to be handed over to the next generation. Every possi-ble field was covered, physics, chemistry, bio-technology, economics, sociology, and legal studies to name a few. It was innovation at its best.
CURIOUS MINDS AT WORK
The chief guest was Ma-hesh. D. Dharmadhikari, regional officer, CBSE and the guests of honour were Dr. PV. Venkitakrishnan, associate director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO and Dr. AC. Bhaskar, scientist ‘G’, tech-nical director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment, DRDO.
The students had pre-pared hard for this event, for more than a month.
And as the visitors poured in on that day, the food and drink stalls provided the much needed refreshment for the parched throats.

The recent rains seemed to have im-proved the ground water levels in several areas in the neighbourhood.
G. M. Ramalingam, area engineer, Metro Water, Zone 9 says, “We used to get about 500 bookings per day and after the rains that has reduced to 400 bookings
per day. Many residents have started using their bore-well water.”.
There has been a slight improvement in the inflow into lakes, he says.
“But this will not make a difference to Mylaporeans as most of them get water from the desalination plant in Nemmeli. Water from lakes is only used to supple-
ment the water supply here. We are now supplying about 4 20 million litres of water and can comfort-ably sustain this supply till the end of October”.

MINOR FIRE AT APARTMENTA minor fire was reported at an apartment complex at MRC
Nagar on Sunday (Aug 20) afternoon.According to fire personnel, the fire control room received a call
a little after 12 p.m. about smoke emanating from a house on the second floor of an apartment complex there. The complex has about four blocks and 150 houses.
Three fire tenders from Mylapore and one from Egmore were immediately dispatched and the fire was put out in 15 minutes. The fire was triggered by a short circuit in the refrigerator, say fire personnel.
Sri Vinayaka Chathurti is a time for the potters of Mylapore to work overtime - on the top of this week, they put out the clay images of Vinayaka for sale. These were on sale on the pavements near Sri Anjenaya Temple in Luz on Royapettah High Road.The images were priced between Rs 150 and Rs.300 now.The small community of potters reside in the Veeraperumal Koil Street zone. One potter said they had made close to 1000 images.This is the only place in Mylapore where clay images are made and sold.
