THREE POWERFUL TOOLS FOR TRANSFORMING EXISTING PATHS

Effects An effect is a set of transformations that change the

appearance of a path without changing the path itself

Transparency Transparency is a particular form of an effect: Making an

object partially “see-through”

Live Paint Live Paint is not an effect, but a way to apply fill and stroke

attributes that may be more intuitive and accessible thanIllustrator’s normal stroke and fill rules


EFFECTS IN ILLUSTRATOR

Technical Concept Effects in Illustrator can be applied to any path The effect(s) and path(s) can be edited

independently of each other

More immediately relevant points about effects They are awfully fun! They are equally accessible to the talented and

skilled illustrator and the clumsy and untalenteddesigner... with more or less equal impact

THE OUTLINE VIEW EXERCISE

What does it mean that effects and paths canbe edited independently of each other?

It often helps to visualize a path stripped of itseffect

The figure in this slide is the same set ofshapes you saw in the previous slide, but inOutline View the effects are not displayed


THREE SETS OF EFFECTS YOU USE MOST

Effects are applied to selectedobjects from the Effect menu

The most commonly applied anduseful are: Distort & Transform (example:

pucker) Stylize (example: Drop Shadow) Warp (example: Flag)

3D – Simulates 3D rotation andperspective

Convert to Shape – Converts pathsto shapes

Crop Marks – Generates cropmarks for printers from a selectedrectangle path (arcane)

Pathfinder – Effects that are similarto transformations available in thePathfinder panel

Rasterize – Converts selectedvectors to rasters, without freezingraster settings permanently

SVG Filters – Permanently changesappearance (not like effects), butmaintains vector properties

Photoshop Effects (shown here) – Aset of raster effects lifted fromPhotoshop

DISTORT AND TRANSFORM


STYLIZE

The world’s most popular effect,the drop shadow, is available fromthe Stylize effect set

Stylize includes: Drop Shadow Feather Inner Glow Outer Glow Round Corners Scribble

As with other effects, use previewto experiment


WARPS

15 warp effects All accessible from the same dialog box, which

opens no matter which warp effect you choose


PHOTOSHOP EFFECTS

Photoshop effects are available in Illustrator All Photoshop effects can be accessed from any Photoshop Effect submenu

except Pixelate, Blur, Sharpen, or Video... ...So unless you are applying those effects, go directly to Effect > Effect Gallery

to apply Photoshop effects


MANAGE EFFECTS IN THE APPEARANCE PANEL

The Appearance panel providespowerful management for alleffects applied to a selection

DON’T try to edit or delete anapplied effect from the Effect menu

Use the Appearance panel… If you applied the effect to just an

object’s stroke or fill, select theobject, then expand the Stroke orFill listing on the Appearance panel

To remove an effect, click next tothe effect name, then click theDelete Selected Item button in theAppearance panel

To edit an effect, click the link to(re)open the effect dialog box


EXPAND EFFECTS

Effects remain editable (through theAppearance panel) until expanded Printers frequently require that effects

be expanded before they can managea document in their print process

Expanded effects cannot be edited;they become permanently part of theobject path (and no longer “effects”)

A good practice is to save a separateversion of your Illustrator file when youneed to expand effects

To expand all effects in selectedobjects, choose Object > ExpandAppearance


TRANSPARENCY

Illustrator’s transparency controls canadd realism to illustrations Make a window semitransparent,

revealing what is behind it Draw some autumn leaves, and lower

their opacity to make them looksemitransparent

Abstract designs can be enhanced byopacity changes


TRANSPARENCY MODES

Transparency blending modesfunction like effects — they sitover and apply to artworkbeneath them

Choose a blending mode for anyobject to control how its colorsblend with the colors in theunderlying objects

Transparency modes can becombined with effects andpatterns for particularly intriguingimpact


TRANSPARENCY AND THE WEB

Transparent web graphics are graphics that have the background colorremoved, so the background of the web page shows through completely

Web artwork, including background colors and patterns, can be semi-transparent, allowing underlying objects to be partially visible


WORKING WITH LIVE PAINT

What? Live Paint allows you to define paintable objects where vectors intersect Why? Because this is often nearly impossible in normal Illustrator mode, where

intersecting paths simply “pass over” each other and the objects formed by theirintersection are not paintable


TO APPLY LIVE PAINT

Create a Live Paint group – agroup of selected paths (can be awhole document) that areoperating in Live Paint mode Convert selected objects to a Live

Paint group by choosing Object >Live Paint > Make

Load up the Paint Bucket tool witha color from the Color panel, andapply that color to generatedobjects

LIVE PAINT NOTES AND TIPS

Some basics: Setting Live Paint Gap Options determines how Live Paint handles

small gaps between near-intersecting paths Live Paint disables and does not support applied effects such as

transparency Release a selected Live Paint group by choosing Object > Live Paint >

Expand In the world of Live Paint, strokes are edges, fills are faces

Strokes and fills (edges and faces) Live Paint can be used for only strokes, but is generally used for

strokes and fills or just fills You can edit strokes and fills, but Illustrator’s normal, powerful path-

editing mode is better for that Set stroke and/or fill options by double-clicking the Live Paint Bucket

tool to open the Live Paint Bucket Options dialog box


CREATING A LIVE PAINT GROUP

Select paths, select theLive Paint Bucket tool, andclick within the selectedpaths to create a LivePaint group

OR Select paths and then

choose Object > LivePaint > Make


EXPANDING A LIVE PAINT GROUP

To end a Live Paintsession and return tonormal editing mode inIllustrator: Choose Object > Live

Paint > Expand Stroke and fill settings

applied in Live Paintmode remain in effect


WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

Apply effects and edit (or remove) them in the Appearance panel Expand effects Apply transparency, including different modes Color with Live Paint


REVIEW: KEY POINTS

Effects... Do not change underlying paths Are generally expanded before you send to print Are edited in the Appearance panel
