Safe drinking water is a basic need, yet more than 1.2 billion people live without it. Every year 2 million people, the majority of them children, die from infectious diseases transmitted by contaminated water. Safe water is essential, for health, well-being and development. (WHO).

Worldwide 2.4 billion people depend on biomass fuels like wood and charcoal to meet their basic energy needs. In many countries burning firewood is the most common way to cook food and to get safe drinking water. But open fires in the home are inefficient, they damage health and produce greenhouse gas emissions so there is an urgent need to find alternative, renewable energy sources.

Solvatten is a sustainable solution

SOLVATTEN® Solar Safe Water System is an innovative and environmentally-friendly product for households in developing countries. By combining several well-documented methods for treating water, one Solvatten provides 11-44 litres of safe water* per day, as well as warm water for cooking, personal hygiene and washing. The technology use only sunshine, no spare parts are required and the lifespan is at least 7 years. The use of wood or charcoal is reduced by approximately 50% with Solvatten.* The result is safe drinking water according to the WHO standard (<1 E.coli/100 ml) after 2-6 hours in the sun. How does it work?

A widely applicable way to heat and treat water basedon three recognized methods:

1) Filtration2) Pasteurization3) UV sterilization

The transparent plastic emits 95% of ultraviolet radiation (UV-A and UV-B). As the temperature increase the microbiological contamination gets exposed to harmful UV radiation.

A mechanical device indicates when the water is safe to drink. At 55°C all microbiological contamination will have been sufficiently exposed. Continued exposure can bring the water beyond 75°C.


Sun power replacing firewood and charcoal

Using Solvatten improves health in many ways. In Africa, many kitchens are enclosed rooms without chimneys: the smoke-filled working conditions can have severe health effects, including burns and lung disease. As Solvatten replaces boiling with about 50% or 4,2 kg of firewood/day, less time is spent in this environment. In a years time the savings will be approximately 1,5 tons of firewood or 400 kg of charcoal or 5 full size trees. In 7 years a total of 10,6 tons of firewood or 35-40 trees can be saved. This equals more than 1,2 tons of CO2/year (Baseline study from Eco Trust, Uganda 2011-2012).

Working together

At the moment Solvatten is not an open market product. For households living on less than 2 USD/day the technology will be hard to obtain at full cost. Through a unique collaboration between myclimate, Zeromission/ U&We and Solvatten, we can now offer a carbon saving project to make the technology available to the market in Uganda. This is an invitation to companies and organizations ready to invest and respond to the increasing carbon emissions and its effect on climate.By compensating carbon emissions with the use of Solvatten we can collectively help thousands of families to better health and empowerment. Everything starts with safe waterSolvatten brings an increased awareness of hygiene and improves health significantly amongst children. In Bamako, Mali a majority of the inhabitants do not have access to safe water. When a child is born there is a high risk for infections which is a serious threat to both mother and child. This is one of the reasons why Solvatten is a appreciated tool in maternity wards.

Solvatten empowers the family

To provide for a family is easier when everybody is healthySolvatten saves time and significant amount of money Multiple studies shows that a family can save approximately 20 USD/ month. 75 per cent of the families interviewed* explains that the time savings from acquiring fuel and cooking has reduced. More time for school

School attendance has increased significantly, much due to improved health and less waisted time acquiring fuel and water. Families using Solvatten explains that their children now goes to school every day. (School attendance has now gone up to 87% ). When the drowsiness from typhoid is gone the home work is easy to do.(Swedish University for Agricultural science, SROI Study 2011)


Strengthened voice for womenAnother benefit is that use of Solvatten increases girls’ school attendance, level of education and literacy rates increase, as they no longer need to miss school to secure water and fuel for their families. To have a Solvatten at home increases the recognition of women as having skills and knowledge outside the scope of their traditional roles.

Solvatten creates jobs Already at the distribution of Solvatten it can create help to create and boost income. Other examples of how Solvatten increase income is that “safe water”,“safe juice and “safe vegetables” is being sold. In hair saloons, the hot water is being used to wash customers hair. A bakery in Uganda reports that Solvatten has increased savings and the well being of its employes as the cost for drinking water has dropped. Restaurants uses Solvatten to heat water that is directly used for tea, coffee, and hot chocolate

Reduces deforestation, carbon emission and soil erosion In one of many Solvatten projects in Kenya approximately 2 200 families uses Solvatten. Measuring the impact is impressive, more than 13 000 trees each year is being saved. In 7 years 90 000 trees equally the size of 280 football fields will be saved. This equals approximately 17 000 ton of of CO2

Savings with social and environmental benefits



Cost efficiency of 3 000 Solvatten?It will lead to a significant improvement of life with a social return of investment of 1:26 to 18 000 people for seven years or longer. The technology replaces large amount of energy from solid fuels such as fire wood and charcoal for heating water over open cookstoves. 3 000 Solvatten will under a period of seven years replace the need for fuel with an equivalent of approximately 42 MWh. Landed cost for 3 000 units is roughly 350 000€ which brings the cost to approximately 0,01 € per kWh.
