SHOPPING MALL BOGYOKE AUNG SAN MARKET

Built by the British in 1926, this larger, oriental version of London’s Covent Garden

market, is now largely given over to stalls designed to draw tourists: lacquerware

from Bagan, woodcarving from Mandalay and woven textiles from the Chin and Naga

tribes. Friendly women will size you up for a traditional longyi skirt and blouse,

made-to-measure upstairs in minutes. Complete your outfit with a pair of traditional

velvet slippers sold on the south side. Along the west side is a line of antique shops

though much is new-made-old these days.

The shop is crammed full of vintage furniture and handicrafts, with a treasure trove

of trinkets and knick-knacks nestled among them, waiting to be discovered.

Augustine's Antiques shop was started by Mr Augustine since 1978. Before that he

used to go and sell the items in Diplomatic Residences. He had 38 years of experience

in this business. It is now owned by Mr Augustine’s son, U Wunna, and is a great

place to find vintage furniture and old homeware items.

INPHAW KONE

The Inphaw Khone, which is endowed with weaving workshops, is among the must-

go places in the region. A short visit to this village will introduce you to the skilful

young weavers who operate the looms made from bamboo and teak. The village has

long been well known for being the best place to purchase lotus-silk shawls. Due to

the arduous process involved in the production, the shawls can be overpriced, but you

pay for the high quality you get.
