My name is Haythi Thu but I go by Kristy; I was bornand bred in Burma and it has only been a few months sinceI ew all the way from home to Irvine in Orange County,California for college.

I spent my high school years at Diplomatic School ofYangon (DSY); as DSY isnt one of the schools that is ac-credited by the WASC, I didnt have my future plans forcollege guided and planned out for me like the others did.Most graduates from my school usually head off to UK forfurther education so that wasnt much of a problem forthem. However, with the help of my teachers and the seniorgraduates who are already studying here in US, I managedto get into OCC and now Im in the second semester ofmy freshman year.

I was studying architecture when I rst arrived but nowIm a biology/pre-med major. My dream has always beento help people and to work with kids - to be a pediatrician.Ive always loved and got along well with kids which en-courages me more to go into the pediatrician eld. I tookarchitecture as my major at rst because as it is known,medical is a really hard eld and I was quite terried to gointo it. Also, my dad majored in engineering, so I thoughtitd be nice if I was in the same eld with my dad.

Of course I disappointed my dad a little when I changedmy major to pre-med but it delighted my mom since it hasalways been our dream together; but my dad still supportsme all the way as well. Im expecting to transfer to eitherone of the UCs or any other good private universities inSouthern California by next fall/spring but Ill be applyingto a few schools in other states as well.

As for med school, I really hope to get into Stanford forI have always admired it. Being a daughter of a singer, Ireally cant deny the genes - I love singing. As much asI love singing, I rarely sing in public as Im very insecureabout my voice and get nervous in front of big crowds andstrangers.

Im not proud to say that I was actually excited to leavehome for a few years at rst. I was thrilled to experienceall the adventures that were waiting ahead of me but littledid I know that there were obstacles waiting for me as well.It didnt take long for me to miss home. I got the home-sick blues after a couple weeks. It was all great at rst - Ihad all the freedom in the world, no curfews or anythingbut the thrill only lasted for a month or so. After that, Imissed coming home to my parents, I missed having mymom waiting up for me, worried, when I came home late,I missed having all the meals prepared for me when I washungry and above all that, I missed my parents warm hugswhenever I was stressed. Nevertheless, its still a constantbattle between the food and my parents; I still don t whichI miss more and Im actually pretty guilty about that.

My rst semester actually went quite well, I didnt haveto deal with much. Although I didnt have trouble adaptingto a new environment, I struggled making new friends - Ialways have; as a true Burmese, I was timid and refusedto get out of my comfort zone. Its dreadful because my

two best friends arent with me either and were all in eachdifferent continents.

Apart from that and cravings for Burmese food, my rstsemester was just as ne. My second semester hasnt beencooperating with me very well. Because my school doesntprovide an on-campus housing, I have to nd an apart-ment elsewhere. Although I had a place near my schoollast semester, things didnt work out very well between myroommate and I which ended up with me moving out andnow commuting to school with a 2 hours bus ride and a40 mins walk just to get to school. Then again, its a greatexperience to study abroad alone.

Since Im not in the nest of my parents anymore andstanding alone, I got to learn a lot about everything: newculture, people, life, and even myself. The best part aboutcoming here is that you get to teach yourself how to live and

survive on your own. Its great, especially for us Burmesekids because we get everything done for us back home.Things Ive never done before: laundry, cooking, clean-ing and of sort, Ive basically mastered them - although Ihavent mastered cooking quite well. After you step into thereal-adult world and deal with all kinds of people, you seehow people actually are and youre not so naive anymore.You become experienced, independent, mature and tougherthan before. To sum up, you grow up, because there is noother way out.
