     All persons working in the mechanical workshop must have been fully briefed inbasic Health and Safety principles and signed to say they have the read andunderstood the applicable and risk assessment, for the work they are carryingout or equipment they are using.

    Personal Protective Equipment1. With the many moving parts that eist in every equipment, it is etremelyimportant to wear clothing that fits properly. !lothing that is too loose can getcaught while working, clothing that is too tight can restrict your movements andresponses in dangerous situations. "nstead, it is advisable to wear fittedclothing#s. $very%day clothing must be appropriately covered while working inthe workshop and shorts are never permitted.&. Safety shoes with steel toe caps must be worn at all times.'. (rotective clear safety goggles must be worn in designated )$ye (rotection Areas )and ear protectors must be worn when required and in designated

    areas.*. +ong hair can easily be caught in moving machinery and must be secured bybeing tied back.. -he wearing of rings, dangling ewellery /neck chains and earrings etc.0 isvery dangerous and must be removed before work commences.. 2requent and prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause dermatitis

    and other skin disorders, including skin cancer, so avoid unnecessary contact.

     Adopt safe systems of work and wear protective clothing, which should be

    cleaned or replaced regularly. 3aintain high standards of personal hygiene and

    cleanliness.

    Prohibited Behavior 1. Smoking, eating and drinking in workshop areas is strictly prohibited at alltimes&. Any employee known or suspected of being under the influence of alcohol ordrugs will not be allowed to continue work while in that condition.'. (ractical okes, )horseplay,4 or any activity that may endanger the health orwell%being of any employee, or the work operation, are strictly forbidden.*. -he playing of music or the use of personal music equipment is prohibited at

    all times.. 2ooling around, unruly behavior or horseplay will not be tolerated at any timein the workshops.. 5riving in vehicles in workshop is by only persons who are authori6ed to driveby the company.

    Housekeeping1. After immediate use during the day tools must be stored in the correctlocation and all tools issues from the stores must be returned to the stores atthe end of each session.

    &. After use machines must be cleared down and all swarf filings and otherdebris removed from machine beds, workbenches and the floor as soon aspossible.'. !ontain and clean up any spillages immediately and ensure that all walkways are kept dry and clear of any obstructions.

    . All waste must be disposed of at the end of each session and using thecorrect bins.. At the end of each day any unfitted parts must be stored neatly.

    Safety and Fire Precautions1. All personal must take part in mock fire and security drills and must follow theclear direction of 3arshalls in the event of an evacuation.&. 7efore commencing any welding operations, make sure that an appropriatefire etinguisher is readily accessible. 8nly trained persons would use the

    etinguishers.'. 3ost importantly, every person inside the workshop must know the contactnumber of ambulance and fire services.*. "f an accident should occur call for assistance immediately, as all accidentsand near misses no matter how small, must be logged.

    Use the following proper lifting procedures

    a. (lan the move before lifting. !lear the path of any obstructions, et

      b. Squad down close to the load by bending the knees.

    c. -est the load for weight, balance, etc. "f it is too heavy or awkward, get

    assistance

      d. 9eep the load closed and centered to the body and keep the back erect.

    e. :et a firm grip on the load, using handles when possible. Wear gloves

    when lifting items with sharp edges, etc.

    f. -ighten stomach muscles.

    g. +ift smoothly using the legs. 5on#t erk the load.

    h. "f it is necessary to turn with the load, pivot on the feet instead of twisting

    at the waist.

    i. +ower the load by bending the knees.

    1. ;ou may need to run engines for diagnostic purposes but ehaust fumes

    irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, and are a risk to health if you breathe

    them in. !arbon%fuelled engine fumes contain carbon monoide, a poisonous

    gas. (rolonged eposure to diesel fumes, especially blue or black smoke, may

    lead to coughing and breathlessness. +ong%term repeated eposure to diesel

    fumes over a period of about &< years may increase the risk of lung cancer.

    &. $haust fumes can quickly reach harmful concentrations, particularly from

    cold or intermittently run engines /when run indoors without ehaust ventilation0.

    generator ehaust. "t should ventilate to a safe place in the open air = where

    fume will not be drawn back into the workshop or affect other premises or

    people nearby.

    '.7atteries also pose a significant risk for inury to mechanics. -o prevent

    sparks, smoking, welding or performing any other work with an open flame

    should be banned when mechanics ump a dead battery. >umping a dead

    battery requires a well%ventilated work area as well, so mechanics don#t inhale

    fumes. Safety procedures for batteries should include removing leads when

    scraping battery posts and keeping vent covers in place to prevent acid splash.
