Abortion

What is Abortion?

Abortion is the intentional termination of pregnancy after conception.

This allows women to put an end to their pregnancies, but involves killing the

undeveloped embryo or fetus. For this reason, it is a controversial

subject in American Politics.

The Two Sides Of Abortion

Pro-LifePro-Life: Those who are generally against abortion. They believe that

the human fetus is a person and has the right to live.

This group is usually supported by Christians and

Muslims.

Pro-ChoicePro-Choice: Those who support abortion.

They believe that women have the right

to continue or terminate a

pregnancy. They frame their beliefs in terms of individual

liberty, reproductive freedom, and

reproductive rights.

Statistics

Worldwide, there are approximately 42 million abortions a year and 115,000 a day.

1% of women have abortions because of rape or incest.

6% of women have abortions because of potential health problems to either the mother or the child.

93% of abortions occur because of social reasons. An estimated 43% of women will have at least

one abortion by the time they are 45 years old. 47% of abortions are performed on women who

have had at least one previous abortion.

Abortion in the 1900s

In the 1900s, one in every six pregnancies where terminated. In those days, babies were delivered prematurely and then killed. Laws soon began to be created to protect the fetus. Still for years, they had illegal abortions performed by doctors and people who weren’t medically trained. This included family members giving abortions and also the women themselves.

Abortion Today

Since the early 1900s, abortion has become legal and much safer for the mother.

There are 3 different types of abortions:Surgical abortionsMedical abortionsChemical abortions

Surgical Abortions

These are abortions that involve invasive procedures.1. Surgical Aspiration2. Dilation and curettage3. Dilation and evacuation4. Dilation and extraction5. Hysterotomy

Medical Abortions

These are abortions that involve the administration of drugs specifically intended to abort the child.1. Mifepristone: blocks the hormone that helps

develop the lining of the uterus during pregnancy.2. Methotrexate: directly attacks and breaks down

the baby's fast-growing cells.3. Salt Poisoning: The abortionist sticks a long

needle into the mother's womb. The needle contains salt which is then injected into the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. The baby breathes in, swallows the salt and dies from salt poisoning, dehydration, brain hemorrhage and convulsions.

Chemical Abortions

These are abortions caused by drugs that, at least some of the time, prevent the implantation of the already-created baby in the uterine lining.1. The Ortho-Evra2. The NuvaRing3. Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection4. Plan B

Think About This

Would you say that a homeless person is not human because it has no home?

Everyday, babies are being born prematurely at 5 months. They are human right?

But then it’s okay to terminate a pregnancy at 5 months?

By day 22, the heart is beating.

By week 6, brain waves are detectable, the mouth and lips are present, and the fingernails start forming.

By week 20, the baby has all of the parts necessary to experience pain, including the nerves, spinal cord and thalamus.

Did you know?

Remember the movie Horton Hears A Who?

And even though you can't hear or see them at all...a person's a person, no matter how small.
