• Call your health care provider to schedule an appointment as soon as you can. At your checkup, your provider will explain what to expect during your pregnancy. They will check you for medical conditions that could affect you or your baby.

• As you know, smoking, alcohol and drugs are harmful to your baby during pregnancy.

• It’s important to drink a lot of water during your pregnancy.

• Eat healthy foods like vegetables, fruits and lean meat, chicken or fish. Keep away from processed and fatty foods like potato chips and cookies.

• Calcium helps a baby to have strong bones. Milk, cheese, yogurt and broccoli are excellent choices!

• Do something active every day. You can be active even if you do not go to the gym.

• Walking is a good source of exercise and will help you maintain a healthy pregnancy weight. It is also a great way to relax.

• If you feel exhausted while pregnant, exercise can help provide the extra energy you need!

• Signs of labor include contractions that start in the lower back and work their way to the front. If you don’t feel well or if your water has broken, call your health care provider or go to the hospital right away!

• It is normal to experience the “baby blues” a few days after delivery. Tell your provider if you have strong feelings of sadness, worry, or unpleasant thoughts that last for more than 2 weeks. You can visit www.njspeakup.gov for additional help.

• Ensure your baby has a separate place to sleep. Lay your baby on his or her back, not the side or tummy to avoid SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
