I staggered forward, keeping my hands up to shield me from objects that weren’t visible. Luckily, I made it to the door without any injuries. I tried to open it, but it was locked from the outside. I started to panic. I knocked on the door as hard as I could and kept yelling, “HELP!” over and over. On the last knock, that door suddenly swung open. As my eyes adjusted to the brightness of the morning, I started to see the outlines of a man. The sun was right behind the man’s head, so I had to look down. After a few more moments, I could finally see clearly. I looked back at the man and noticed that he was an African American. He was wearing clothes that were strange to me, but to him were the most ordinary thing in the world. He stared at me and I stared right back at him. We stood there for a long time. I was so tired and confused that I could no longer stand or keep my eyes open. Within seconds, I was falling back into the darkness of sleep once again. This time, in knew it could not be anyone related to me. The family consisted of a father, a mother, three sons, and two daughters. The name of the family was the Bracksters. I looked around the room and began to see things that were very strange to me. The weirdest thing I saw was that there weren’t any electric lights, only candles and lamps. I asked them about this, but they thought I was crazy, talking about a form of light without a flame. I asked them where I was, and they told me that I was in Boston, Massachusetts. Then things got really weird. They started to ask me where I was from. I told them I was from California, but they had no idea where that was. I started thinking about what was happening. Then I noticed something. The father was wearing a wig. I remembered from history class that people in the colonies had worn wigs. I started to ask what the date was, but I thought better of it and kept quiet. I had to keep this to myself. My Midnight Journey Through Time

It had started off like any other day that week. It was sunny outside and I was prepared to leave the cage that was closing in on me, the cage that most people know as

school. Bleeeeeeeeeep! The cage was opened, and now I could fly away, back to the

place I know best. When I got home, I did my homework, ate dinner, and went to the one place that was my own, my bedroom. I quickly turned on the new electric blanket that I

had just bought and went to bed, waiting to be swept away into my dreams.

Week One

I woke up the next morning in a daze. The room I was laying in was almost pitch

black, except for a streak of natural light coming from the other side of the door. Istaggered forward, keeping my hands up to shield me from objects that weren’t visible.

Luckily, I made it to the door without any injuries. I tried to open it, but it was locked

from the outside. I started to panic. I knocked on the door as hard as I could and kept

yelling, “HELP!” over and over. On the last knock, that door suddenly swung open. Asmy eyes adjusted to the brightness of the morning, I started to see the outlines of a man.

The sun was right behind the man’s head, so I had to look down. After a few moremoments, I could finally see clearly. I looked back at the man and noticed that he was an

African American. He was wearing clothes that were strange to me, but to him were the

most ordinary thing in the world. He stared at me and I stared right back at him. We stood

there for a long time. I was so tired and confused that I could no longer stand or keep myeyes open. Within seconds, I was falling back into the darkness of sleep once again.

When I opened my eyes this time, I found myself in a comfortable bed. I thought

that the whole engagement with the weird room and the African American man had all been a dream. Within the next hour, I found out that I had been wrong.

It has been a week since I first saw that man, but I am still unfamiliar with thisstrange new world that I have come to. Now I am going to tell you about the hour thatchanged my life forever. When I woke up for the second time that day, there was a whole

family looking down at me. This time, in knew it could not be anyone related to me. The

family consisted of a father, a mother, three sons, and two daughters. The name of thefamily was the Bracksters. I looked around the room and began to see things that were

very strange to me. The weirdest thing I saw was that there weren’t any electric lights,

only candles and lamps. I asked them about this, but they thought I was crazy, talking

about a form of light without a flame. I asked them where I was, and they told me that Iwas in Boston, Massachusetts. Then things got really weird. They started to ask me

keep this to myself. Over the rest of that week, I learned to work so that I could pay off any debts I would have at the end of this journey.

After further investigation into the time that I was presently in, I discovered that

the year was 1773. This intrigued me because I knew something had happened this, but it

wasn’t coming to mind. I let that thought escape me when I heard someone calling myname in the distance. “Ben!” the voice was getting louder. “Ben! Its time for you to bring

the boys to school!” I heard the family’s mother yell up the stairs to the room I was

staying in. “Only here for a week and she thinks I’m part of the family,” I mumbled tomyself. I walked down the stairs to find everyone waiting for me. “Come on Ben, the

boys will be late if you don’t hurry up,” Rob, the eldest son – who was my age – said to

me. We had become best friends over the past week that I was with his family. So Iwalked the boys to school and stayed there for the rest of the day. I wanted to watch and

see what school was like here.

While watching how school worked at this time, I found out some interesting

things, but the most interesting was that there were only white boys. This baffled me. Iwas so used to having different ethnicities and cultures around me that I had forgotten

how the people of the colonies had African American slaves. I thought back to when I

first woke up and had seen a man. I now know that the man was a slave. Also, I couldn’t

find any older kids. Later that day, I learned that kids only go to school until they areseven years old. There are a few more things that I found interesting about school during

this time period. One is that most kids only learn how to read but not to write. The other is that only wealthy families had their kids learn how to write and do arithmetic. But I did

not learn these things from anyone at the school or from the Bracksters. I learned these

things from a man I met in the street walking home. This man was Paul Revere.

I was so surprised that I actually could not talk. I knew that I could not tell himwhat was about to happen, to I tried to go without talking to him, but he stopped me.

“Hello young fellow. Would you happen to know the way to the Brackster residence? I

have some business to do with them.” I was taken by surprise, but I knew I had to leadhim there. “Yes sir. I am going to their house myself. Would you like me to lead you

there?” he accepted and we were off. I was surprised at how open with my feelings I was

when around this man. I started to talk with him while walking to the house and he toldme some interesting facts about Boston. After a while we were standing in front of the

house. He thanked me and walked inside. The rest of the week was less eventful than the

past few days had been, but I still had to work more than I would have liked.

Week Three

This week, Rob said that we had to go out and cut wood for the family. I didn’t want tocut wood, but it was almost impossible to argue with Rob. So we went out to the edge of

the forest and began chopping away some of the “not as thick” trees. It took us about ten

minutes to chop one tree down with axes. Then, while rob went on to then next tree, I hadto chop the tree into firewood. In all, it took about thirty minutes to finish one tree. We

had to cut down and chop fifty trees. This was going to take us a long time. We decided

that were going to work for five hours each day to get the job done in five days. After thefirst hour of work, I felt like I could go on no longer, but Rob just kept pushing. I had to

keep going if I was going to be of any help. So I picked up my axe and started chopping

again. When the five hours was done, I knew that I was going to be really sore. I didn’t

think that I could keep chopping for another four days. I went back into the house and fell

asleep.

Ever since I got to this time, I always woke up thinking about my family and my

friends back in my time. But today I woke up thinking about how sore I was. I moaned asI got out of bed and looked outside. I figured it was about six o’clock because the sun

was just rising. It was a beautiful day, and I didn’t want to waste my time inside, so I

immediately went out and started to chop without Rob. About two hours later, I saw Robcoming out to the forest. He was impressed how I had started working without him, so he

gave me the rest of the day off. I thanked him, and walked off towards town. When I got

there, I saw kids playing a game of tag. I thought it was funny that kids in my time periodstill play a game that was made even before this time period. As I was watching, a man

with a hood walked by me. I knew something was strange about the man, so I decided to

follow him.

After about ten minutes of following the man through the crowded streets of Boston, he finally walked into a pub, looking around to see if anyone was following him.

I walked in behind him, being careful not to be noticed. What I saw next was confusing

to me. The whole pub was empty except for the man that had just walked in and the

Bracksters. Everyone was staring at me. I looked at the faces until I came to the hoodedman. He was Paul Revere. Rob told me to come and sit down. Over the next hour, Mr.

Revere told us about his plan to throw the tea into the ocean. When he said tea, Iimmediately remembered what had happened in 1773, the Boston Tea Party.

Week Four

Last week I had learned all about Boston’s government from the Bracksters and

Paul Revere. They had told me that only people who owned land had the right to vote and

that people had religious freedom. I had never known this and was interested in it. So for the next few hours I learned about Boston. On Sunday, we went to church. The people in

this time period were very into worshipping. The church I went to was a Puritan church,

but there were many other churches that had different beliefs. After church, I went back home and thought about what was going to happen tomorrow. After a while of sitting, I

fell asleep.

I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. I felt like I could do anything. Iflew down the steps and out the door. I decided that I was going to go jogging today to

get the energy out of me. I jogged up the hill and took a seat on a bench at the top.

Everyday that I had come to this spot, I knew that I would feel happy. I looked out across

the sparkling ocean and knew that today was going to be a good day. I decided that Ishould go back and get some breakfast. When I got to the house, Rob was standing in the

doorway, waiting for me. “Ben, we have to go help Mr. Revere prepare for tonight.” At

first, I didn’t know what he was talking about, but then I remembered the Tea Party.“Let’s go then.” We walked over to Mr. Revere’s house and knocked on the door. He was

pleased to see that I was there with Rob. He told us to gather some people so that we

could throw the tea into the ocean. Rob and I gathered a few of his friends and went back to the house to see if there was anything else we could do to help. Mr. Revere said he

could do the rest and that we should go home and get ready for tonight. So we left him to

his work and went home to rest. When we got home, Rob immediately went to his bed

and fell asleep. I couldn’t keep my eyes closed because I was scared and excited at the

same time. “I am going to be part of the Boston Tea Party,” I whispered excitedly to

myself, careful not to wake Rob. Soon after, I felt my eyes getting heavier. I was then

asleep within minutes.“Ben!” Rob was trying to wake me up. “Yes?” I responded tiredly. “We have to

go help with the tea now!” As soon as I heard the word tea, I was getting up and dressed

as fast as I could. I ran with Rob through the cold night air to where the ships were. I sawa man standing on the front of a ship and recognized him as Paul Revere. He was giving a

speech to the people of Boston. “These laws are unfair to the people of the New World.

Let us show England that we can do more than just talk. Let us show them that we canalso act!” As soon as he said this, he threw the first of the tea into the water. Then

everything was loud and hectic. I ran towards the ship with Rob right behind me. When

we got there, we started to throw tea off the ship like everybody else. After about five

minutes, Rob accidentally hit me in the head. I was near the edge of the boat, so I fellover the railing and into the water. Something felt weird in the water. I guessed it was the

tea, but soon it started to glow and form into something. There was a bright flash that

made me look away. When I looked back, there was a design that was forming in the

water. I looked closer and saw that it was the same design that was on my electric blanket. I swam towards it and reached out. Right when I touched it, the world around me

began to spin in circles. Then everything went black.

I woke up in a bed that looked familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. I looked

around the room and noticed that it was mine. I had made it back to my own time period.Somehow the design in the water and the design on my electric blanket made me travel

through time. I looked at the blanket and noticed that the design had gotten wet. My eyes

went to the table next to me. I saw a glass of water that had been knocked over, probably by me in my sleep. This is probably what had caused me to ravel through time. I went

downstairs and asked my dad what day it was. I was surprised to find that it was

Saturday, the day after I had used my electric blanket. I thought back to all the work I haddone and all the things that I had learned from going to the past. Everyday I think of Rob

and what he might have done with his life. When I think back on my adventure through

time, I remember that people can always change. I know I did. I went through a lot on my journey, and maybe someday I will meet new friends that remind me of Rob and the

Brackters. Maybe someday, I will be able to be as good of a leader as Paul Revere.
