many of us fall into patterns thatlead to career lethargy.

What's the problem? Well, whenyou're treading water at the localpool, you don't develop skills incompetitive ocean swimming. Youget comfortable. And then youreach a point where you can't makea comeback. Your energy - bothphysical and mental- operates on adifferent wavelength.

There's almost always a way tochange careers, but it's easier tostart as early as possible. You needdifferent career muscles for careerchange than you do for careermaintenance.

By way of analogy, if you haven'tworked out in five years, youprobably need to start with atrainer. You need some powerfulexternal motivation to start or elseyou need to find some way to get

rewarded for your initial efforts.

If you just can't summon up theenergy to change, do somethingdifferent, even something small. That's often enough to trigger yourenergy to get started on a newcareer.

When I say small, I mean reallysmall. Think of driving home a newway. Write in longhand when youusually use the computer. Read abook in a new field. Challengeyourself to take a class or course.

Old shoes take up a lot of space.Sometimes you need to get rid

of them before they take overyour closet - although ofcousre it's rarely a goodidea to toss out the oldirresponsibly. Who wants togo barefoot?

Good reason for career change:Your job feels like an old shoe By Cathy Goodwin, Ph.D

“All toooften, someof us alsoget attached toold jobs that

feel SOcomfortable.”

Maybe you've got an old chair oreven an old car you just can't bearto part with. We've all been there.

All too often, some of us also getattached to old jobs that feel SOcomfortable.

For example:

Jeff took a job as a bartender afterhe dropped out of school andcouldn't get a job. He made goodtips and now he's still doing thesame job. He's got a lot of outsideinterests - he's also an artist - so he'skind of let his day job go by.

Maria had been a corporateexecutive. When she moved to anew city for family reasons, sheaccepted a job as a teller in a smallbank. She can't move up and shecan't move out in the same town. She's starting to get restless - andher boss seems to be wonderingwhy she's still there.

Martin started a business as a lifecoach. He wasn't very successful. So he accepted an online job thatfell into his lap, where he developedonline training programs for amedium-sized company. The workwas easy and fun.

Originally, Martin figured he'd usethe money from this job to supporthis business with technology andassistants, but he soon got SOcomfortable. His salary began tofeel like an allowance or veteransbenefit.

These examples are compositesand they're pretty extreme. But

I've got a pair of sneakers that I can't bear to throw out. They've gotholes and they're worn, but they are SO comfortable. Problem is... they'renot good for my feet and they're subject to wearing out at any time...

AUGUSTA — The Finance Authorityof Maine (FAME) has partnered withAmerican Student Assistance (ASA)to revolutionize how Maine college-goers finance and repay theirhigher education costs. Through theinnovative educational membershipprogram SALTSM, functionallypowered by ASA and administeredin Maine by FAME, Maine collegestudents and alumni will receivefinancial literacy and proactiveeducation debt managementservices free-of-charge.

SALT is the industry-leadingfinancial empowerment programcreated by ASA to improve thefinancial capabilities of collegestudents and alumni, as well as toassist student loan borrowers oncethey enter repayment. In addition toone-on-one counseling andguidance, students and alumni willhave access to online tools as partof ASA’s membership program, including: a highly interactive,experience-based financial education curriculum; a

personalized dashboard by whichstudents may track their loans;interactive calculators; access to joband scholarship searches; and otherbenefits and rewards to help reducethe cost of attending college.

FAME will launch a pilot version ofthe program this fall when studentsreturn to class. The pilot programwill include up to nine participatingMaine colleges and universities andwill be funded by the MaineCollege Access Challenge Grant.Students should contact their collegedirectly for more information aboutSALT.

As a public purpose, nonprofitorganization, ASA is committed tooffering SALT services free ofcharge to student and alumnimembers by sharing the costs ofservice delivery with like-mindedstakeholders who want to developstudent financial capabilities. SinceSALT’s launch earlier this year, morethan eighty colleges and universitiesfrom across the country have signedup to give their students and alumni

access to the program. FAME is thefirst non-college entity to partnerwith SALT.

“This is a first-of-its-kindcollaboration between two studentloan service providers to addressthe problems of college affordabilityand student debt,” stated ASAPresident Paul Combe. “This kind ofcreative solution is critical, especially because our nation’shigher education systemtraditionally does not include thesetypes of proactive activities thatteach students the best way to payfor college and manage theresulting debt. We believe theMaine initiative can serve as areplicable model for other stateswrangling with these issues,” headded.

According to the Project on StudentDebt and the Class of 2010, Maineranks second in the nation for thehighest debt level among four-yearcollege graduates, with an averageof $29,983 per student. At an

interest rate of 6.8 percent, suchdebt translates into average monthlypayments of $345 for more than 10years, with total interest expected tobe repaid totaling $11,422.

“Maine students often try tonavigate the college financing andloan repayment waters withinadequate knowledge of theprocess and without thinkingthrough the consequences of theirindebtedness,” said FAME ChiefExecutive Officer Beth Bordowitz.“FAME has many initiatives in placeto provide that knowledge. With thelaunch of SALT, FAME is providinganother opportunity for Mainestudents to be better prepared toplan their futures.”

Previous ASA programs havedemonstrated that students providedwith proactive, customized andtargeted communication, such asthose provided via SALT, are 50percent less likely to fail in loanrepayment.

(ARA) – This is the time of yearwhen companies converge oncollege campuses looking for thebest and brightest students.Recruiters - from financial servicesfirms to high tech companies - battleit out to lure potential interns to theirbranding and recruiting events inhopes of enticing them to intern attheir company. For students, it's theultimate opportunity to get a foot inthe door at a company wherethey'd like to have a career.

“This is a great time to be a studentin the market. It's not only excitingto see the all opportunities that areavailable, but students can learn alot from the process of finding aninternship,” says Ebony Thomas, director of campus recruiting atPrudential Financial.

Thomas says there are many thingsto love about finding an internshipthis fall, but here are her topreasons.

It’s all about dressing forsuccess. If students don't have theappropriate clothes for recruitingevents, it's time to shop for a lookthat sends the right message torecruiters and hiring managers. Most college students have clothesfor the classroom that pull double-duty for social outings (aka rushparty, clubs, etc). “Those looks willget you noticed in the wrong way atrecruiting events,” Thomas adds.Though funds can be limited, shesuggests finding two to threeinterchangeable pieces forinteraction with corporate recruiters.

The ability to expandpersonal networks and makenew friends is one of the best perksof finding the perfect internship. Ateach event a student attends, thereare opportunities to meet and get toknow representatives from manydifferent companies. Thomas alsosuggests networking with

The internship hunt:What students should know about landing a great position

upperclassmen who have connectedwith the employers in the past.“Networking with them will giveyou tips on how to be successful insocial, teaming and interviewingsegments of the process,” she notes.

Many companies are gettingmore innovative in theirapproach to draw you to theirevents to get to know potentialinterns. “We see companiesoffering new experiences tobroaden your horizon and creatingchallenges that are meant to bememorable for the interncandidates,” Thomas says. Theserecruiting experiences could rangefrom rock climbing, gourmetcooking classes, to whitewaterrafting. “Events like these allowcompanies to get to know howyou'll work in teams and underpressure.”

Interviewing is an essentialpart of landing the internship, and by far, the most challenging.Knowing what to say and how tosay it is invaluable. Meeting withdifferent company representativesand recruiters can help you polishinterpersonal skills that are key tosuccessful interviews.

For those who are trulycommitted to finding aninternship, it's the perfectopportunity to learn to sell yourself.Learn to be an advocate for yourskills, knowledge and potential.

Learning new skills that maylead to leadershipopportunities and also transfer

back into the classroom are keyreasons why finding the internship isboth useful and fun.

Finding a paid internship isessential. According to theNational Association of Collegesand Employers (NACE), theaverage intern wage for a senior ina four-year undergraduate programis $17.57 per hour. Compare thatto the federal minimum wage of$7.25 per hour, and students wholand internships will be light yearsahead of peers working in serviceor a job not connected to their fieldof study.

Landing the job is the one of the topreasons to love finding the internship. The NACE 2012 Job Outlooksurvey found that nearly 75 percentof employers prefer to hirecandidates with relevant workexperience - and that workexperience is gained throughinterning in your field of study orinterest.

As an additional point, Thomasrecommends that college studentswho are in the market for aninternship shouldn't overlook theobvious: Start early and get to knowthe school's career servicescounselors, who can offer students agreat deal of support. “Careercounselors can be the ultimatematch maker to introduce you tomany internship options and helpyou find companies that could be agood match.”
