The four main compass points are north, south, east and west. Write S for south, E for east and W for west on this compass. Some compasses have four more points. Read and write the abbreviations on the compass.

a Mark north on the bowl with an N. Then mark the other seven points. Now you have made a compass!
b Cut a piece of cork. Stick the needle to the cork with sticky tape.
c Which end is north? You can check against another compass.
d Put the cork in the water. The cork will move and then stop. One end will point north.
e Move the N end of the magnet over the needle from top to bottom about 50 times.
f You need a needle, a magnet, a cork, some sticky tape and a bowl of water.
