This is a great community and when
there is a tragedy like a tornado, it is amazing how everyone pulls together
May 15, 2013, will be remembered for a long time, especially by the people who were struck by the tornado. I know there was damage all over in several counties. Some people had minor injuries, but some had major ones. Winds of near 200 mph destroyed homes, cars, and personal belongings. Six people died due to the storm. It is a time to grieve.
The families affected by the storm will never forget what happened to them on that day. Our prayers go out to the survivors, their families, and especially those who lost loved ones in this terrible storm. What do Texans do when there is a tragedy like a tornado? We raise money to help those in need. How do we raise it? With benefits like concerts, BBQ’s, fish fries, donations through restaurants and many other ways. Many of
our business have a bucket or jar to donate money.
Another great place to give money and items is Mission Granbury and other like organizations or to your church. Giving makes you feel good and going to a concert is fun and eating out is fun. Can you believe you can help so many people having fun? If you know someone from Rancho Brazos, take them with you. They will have a warm feeling seeing so many people trying to help them. I went to Line Camp Restaurant and they had a
benefit concert to raise money for the victims. They raised a lot of money. One of the best bands in the area, in my opinion, is Union Hill. This is a great band that donated their time to raise money for the victims of the tornado. They had many other bands playing also that were very good. Think about this. One of the best ways to have fun is by helping other people. Check to see if there is a benefit or a fish fry and make your plans to help others. This is also a good
way to support your local businesses so they can help others in the community.
If you have a benefit to help others please email me: [email protected] and we will list you in our calendar of events next month.

Louise Hidalgo“In the early 1950’s
while attending West Texas University at Canyon, Texas, I enrolled in a freshman art class. When my art teacher saw my first drawing, he just sighed and said, ‘Well, I guess we all have to start somewhere’”. Granbury artist, Louise Hidalgo revealed this tidbit after recently being voted Artist of the Month by the Lake Granbury Art Association. She added, “He later became my favorite college professor.”
Hidalgo and her family moved to a ranch sandwiched between Granbury and Glen Rose nearly fifty years ago. She raised her six children
here and taught middle school language and theater arts in Granbury. Today that family boasts of 20 grandkids, 26 great grandkids and 5 great-great grandkids. She still finds time to paint and has been gifting original artwork periodically to her offspring, admitting she might not get around to all of them.
Hidalgo has been interested in art all her life, but became “hooked” on art twelve years ago at age 70 when her friend, Daniel Havelka, persuaded her to join him in an art class taught by Frances Meaders. Since then she has
studied with Annette Bohrer, Marjorie Ross, Yvonne Sailers, Doug Prine and James Spurlock, all artists from this area.
She described her art as “realism”, and labels herself as the Queen of Detail, a characteristic that she says drives her mentors crazy. Hidalgo prefers working with water based oils. Why? She claims the clean-up for a messy person, like herself, is easy.
Her largest painting is a 4 x 5’ image of a butterfly painted on gallery wrapped canvas that she found at a garage sale for a bargain price of $10. We’ve all heard of “painting yourself into a corner”. This is a similar situation. Hidalgo placed the canvas horizontally on a surface and applied paint as she moved around it. Finally, there appeared a vacant spot in the canvas center that her vertically diminutive body couldn’t reach. Hidalgo finished the painting with outstretched arms and very long brushes.
Many artists dread a blank white canvas and begin by tinting the painting surface any color but white.
She described her art as “realism”, and labels herself as the Queen of Detail, a characteristic that she says drives her mentors crazy.

Hidalgo loves the challenge of a blank white canvas, eager to apply her ideas and feelings. She adds, “I seldom do a painting unless I can challenge my ability and push my limits just a little.”
Hidalgo has exhibited her work in the Lake Granbury Art Association’s Spring and Fall Festivals as well as the regional “juried-to-get-in” Rio Brazos Exhibits. An active member of LGAA, Hidalgo’s work enhances the walls of LGAA’s Shanley House and she brightens the meetings with her light spirit and sense of humor.

The Annual Texas Steak Cookoff is
on the third Saturday in May every year, in the historic downtown small business district of Hico, Texas. This warm and friendly family event provides artisan ven-dors, local browsing, shop-ping, and of course, a chance to look on as backyard chefs from all over the Southwest participate to see who cooks the best steak in Texas. In addition, you can take enjoy-ment in live entertainment for the whole family all day and into the early evening. A special wine tasting event features area Texas wineries.
This is the second year I have been to the event and it is a blast. People in Hico are so friendly. If you want to eat, shop, and meet people, it is the place to do it. They have a city park for campers and RV’s that is within a few blocks of where the event takes place. This is close enough to Granbury, Glen Rose and the metroplex, that you can drive home after you eat and still be home before dark.

Every year the 3rd Sunday of June is Father’s Day in the USA. It was made to
honor our fathers for doing a good job in the family and the influences they have on society. It is a compliment to Mother’s Day, which is to honor mothers for their influence they have on family and society.
What happens the week before Father’s Day? If you said shopping, you’re right! If you have not bought your father a gift yet, I will give you some ideas sparked by shopping the local businesses in our hometowns.
The saying goes, “the older the boys, the bigger the toys”. Granbury has the best car and truck dealers south of the North Pole. To list a few: Mike Brown Ford, Chrysler, Jeep and Hyundai, Van Griffith kia, Jerry Durant Toyota, and Classic Chevrolet. Other hot items are boats, campers, 4-wheelers, and jet skis. You can find all this in Granbury at: Bennett’s Camping Center, Fun-n-Sun, Carey and Sons, Lake Granbury Marina, or Granbury Motor Sports.
Next, I have a special shop for dad. You can save a lot of money shopping at these unique stores. The Man Cave is a men’s and boy’s consignments store. This is a great place to find slightly used clothes and gifts. The Man Cave is a must see. They are very friendly and helpful.Another big item for men is beef jerky. Mesquite Custom Beef Jerky on Hwy 377 makes fantastic jerky. They will also make custom orders. Try the Smokey Maple, it is unique and flavorful, Dad will love it.
Cowboy Market Place is on Hwy 377, and you can find new and used items. They have home décor and cowboy stuff, or check out their horse tack, chaps, saddles, bits, and horsehair blankets. The cowboy that owns this store knows what he is doing.
One of the best shops on the square, and a must visit for dad, is Doug’s Sports House. If you want a hat, water bottle, mug, watch, etc. with your favorite team logo on it, Doug’s most likely has it. Moms, don’t forget to shop for you too.
Is your dad tired of getting the same old tie every Father’s Day? How about something different this year? Like a delicious meal and a tour of Fossil Rim in Glen Rose? After dinner, you will board a tour vehicle and your guide will introduce you to the nocturnal species not seen during daylight hours. What fun for the whole family. Try Tracks in Time for some neat outdoor furniture to make relaxing for dad easy. Or, stop by Pie Peddlers and pick up dad’s favorite pie. Umm, delicious! Did you know that Higginbotham Brothers in Glen Rose has a Bass Pro Shop inside? And, you can get golf apparel and equipment at Squaw Valley Golf Course Pro shop.
If you are a visitor or live here, remember all the stores in Hood and Somervell counties are great places to shop. Experiment and try different stores every day. Take your time to meet the owners and managers. Take in the ambiance of Granbury and Glen Rose and have fun shopping.

THE SMART SHOPPER
One of the best ways we can be good stewards of what God has given us is to shop wisely and make
every penny count. I’m going to tell you one of the secrets of smart shoppers: Resale.
Southwest Resale
Connection
The resale shop owners are providing the Hood-Somervell county residents ways to find great bargains. Where you can sell and buy items you no longer wear or no longer make use of and make some money!
Resale is one of the fastest growing businesses of the retail world today. Why? To save money.
One of the surprises for a resale shopper is finding variety and the quality of merchandise in these shops. Some shops have it all -- others specialize.
People tend to shy away from resale shops because of the “used” items. The truth is these shops are very selective in accepting merchandise to sell. Some consign, and some purchase out of stock, or going out of business stock.
ShoppingOur closets are full of items we no longer use or wear. Maybe we lost weight or bought on impulse, or just changed our style. Your quality castoffs can be turned into extra cash.
I have to tell you shopping resale can give you a rush if you find that special, unique item that is perfect for your living room, kitchen, or bedroom. This is true, especially if you paid less than the original retail cost. It is a myth that resale shops carry only used items.
Now that I have motivated you to want to shop resale, check out the handy map and our local consignment and resale shops. Look in your closets and head to your local consignment shops and start making money or finding really good deals for really good prices!!!!!!!!!! By: Denise Newton

THEA
TRE
Granbury Theatre Company made its debut
in June of 2012 with this thought provoking musical drama. Now 1776 is back for the one year anniversary of the theater’s grand opening. What a great way to celebrate the birth of our country.
This patriotic story is a musical based on the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It focuses on the efforts of John Adams to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence and to sign the document.
1776 premiered on Broadway in 1969 and ran for 1,217 performances. The production was nominated for five Tony Award and won three, including the Tony Award for Best Musical.
The show will be performed once again, inside the historic courthouse on Granbury square, where the theater company
will recreate the iconic scene of Independence hall Pennsylvania.
The show Opens June 14th and Closes July 6th Show times: Thurs-Sat 7:30pm Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3:30pm.
Order tickets online at Granburytheatrecompany.org or by calling 817-579-0952

I grew up in the south plains of West Texas. At 18, I entered UNT to study piano,
composition and arranging and became active in the lab band and jazz fusion ensembles. I’ve always been drawn to improvisational music, composing and arranging. Over time, I discovered certain freedoms in arranging--keeping signature elements of a song so that it is recognizable, but reconstructing it with different musical elements. The subtractive/additive process is a compositional goldmine. I recorded Hammond B-3 organ on Sister Hazel’s 2nd album, “Somewhere More Familiar” in 1996. The album was picked up by Universal in 1997 reaching gold and platinum status. “Somewhere More Familiar” yielded the singles “All for You” (which stayed #1 for seven weeks) and “Happy” (which entered the top 10). Later, I recorded on Hazel’s 2007, “Santa’s Playlist” and 2009’s “Release”.
Motown writer/artist, Willie Hutch enlisted me as a keyboardist in 1997. Hutch had penned songs for Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There”. “Because he was there during that part of pop history, Mr. Hutch was an invaluable authority of the Motown sound. He could play it, write it out on musical manuscript, and verbally explain it.”
“Between 1998 and 1999, I met studio legends Chuck Rainey (bass, Steely Dan) and keyboardist, Joe Sample. Mr. Rainey hired me for his group and mentored me. My meeting with Joe Sample was a chance encounter one night in Houston. I had seen Mr. Sample in concert about a year and a half

prior to that night. Mr. Sample was the pianist of choice from Marvin Gaye to Miles Davis. It was priceless wisdom that he shared, and it took my musicianship to another level.”
In 1999, I recorded on E-Street Band organist, Danny Federici’s self-titled release.Danny Federici was American rock royalty. Besides being Bruce Springsteen’s organist, he was a founding member of that group. After that record was completed, Danny enlisted me on a three year ghost writing endeavor for his next album, which would be known as “Out Of A Dream” (released 2005). In Dec 2005, I bcame the first UNT keyboardist of my generation to make keyboard magazine for my work on “Out Of A Dream”. In 2008, I contributed an original composition, “Time Spent Moments Saved” to the Adam Sandler movie, “Bedtime Stories”. After working for Federici, I realized that I needed to be in a writing/recording environment consistently ,so I started focusing on creating my own studio. Today’s technology makes it possible to record or collaborate with anyone on the globe practically via e-mail. The software learning curve was a challenge. To my surprise, as soon as I was functional, I received a call from a music editor from Hollywood.
Over the past three years, I served as musical director for certain Dallas civic events. Most recently was the Dallas Theater Center Gala, Center Stage, on May 11, 2013.

That project began in January and it was quite a challenge. It consisted of Broadway show tunes with a 13 piece ensemble that I transcribed, arranged, played and conducted. It was a great convening of some of the best musicians in the DFW area from the studio, touring and theater realms.
May, 2013, marks two years that I have served as keyboardist for the Bishop Arts District Series. It’s a regional smooth jazz super group featuring Sean McCurley (drums-kirk Whalum), Braylon Lacy (Bass-Erykah Badu) and Todd Parsnow (guitar-kirk Franklin) which performs and tours with internationally known jazz artists.Sean McCurley called me to sub a date and we’ve been playing for two years. On Nov 9, I will be playing behind David Pack, lead vocalist of Ambrosia. Around the time I became cognizant of FM radio, he, Michael McDonald and Hall and Oates really dominated that era.
In October 2012, I was next to legendary guitarist, Larry Carlton, as he played a breathtaking solo
rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer” and I remember thinking this guy is legendary. He’s one of this country’s premiere guitarists from Steely Dan to Paul Simon. I used to take my allowance and buy his records to learn jazz chords and I’m about to play with him. That was truly a career milestone. I have really been blessed. Being a musician is a blessing and so are the great people that I’ve met along the way!

Storiebook Café in Glen Rose and Brady Hulsey
Band is a great combination on a Friday or Saturday night. Brady Hulsey Band is a five piece band that plays a mix of over 60 old and new country cover songs from George Strait to the Randy Rogers Band. In addition, the band
also recently released a CD with eight original songs, available on iTunes, Amazon.com and other online retailers. The band started in 2009 with three brothers who would play for parties of their close friends around the Glen Rose area. As they continued to get requests to play, they over
time added more members to complete the lineup that exists today. The band now enjoys playing a variety of clubs from Austin to Oklahoma. Storiebook Café and Brady Hulsey Band is is a great combination for family fun. By: Joe Adams
