As an Oak Park resident and loyal shopper of local, independently owned businesses, my goal is to keep
our neighborhood economy strong by spending my money and now, on OakPark.com and in the Journal, by telling you about all my fi nds and sharing yours.
Now that we’re heading into the holidays there
is no better time to discover the wonderful, warming, tan-talizing shops and shopkeep-
ers we have in Oak Park, Forest
Park, River Forest and the immediate
environs.Today in My Holiday Home
we take our fi rst look at great, unique, affordable gifts for your home. And already we’re hard at work on the Holiday Gift Guide which runs in the paper on Dec. 8. Dozens and more dozens of gift ideas from all sorts of local shops, for every person on your list will be displayed.
And every day on my blog at Oak Park.com I’m busy creating an exciting place to shop for unique, fun items. The Shopping and Fashion Blog is designed to introduce the interconnected tribes of those who make, sell, and purchase local merchan-dise. I will feature items found in commu-nity shops and neighborhood boutiques that are innovative, artful, thoughtfully designed, and fashion forward. I hope
to create an online community where readers are inspired and share inspiration.
Each week the Shopping Blog will introduce readers to community merchants via interviews that share the personal stories of the shopkeepers we support and tell the tale of the journeys taken to start their own businesses. Merchants will share the joys and challenges of owning their own enterprise. I will also highlight novel products with clever details and fi ne craftsman-ship, including clothing, shoes, accessories, beauty products, and home décor. I will empha-size soulful antique pieces and charming vintage fi nds at great prices by including local thrift shops and antique stores.
The blog will include a fun component devised to connect readers via a weekly Street Style post: a post that features local residents as models! Readers will learn how locals express them-selves creatively and fashion-ably and what trends they follow. Neighbors will share their per-sonal fashion advice and
best fi nds as well as their favorite places to shop and why. I look forward to seeing you around town!
So, forget those Monday blues! Mon-
day will always be a Green Day at the Shopping Blog,
a day to smile, where I bring you all that is eco-friendly. What better way to start off your week than fi nding a product that is good for you, good for your pocketbook, and good to the earth? Organic, recycled, and vintage products will abound; deals and steals are on the agenda as well. Each Wednesday is the Meeting of a Great Mind. You will have the opportunity to meet an amazing local entrepreneur and storeowner. Learn of the galvanizing mo-ment of each entrepreneur and how your favorite shop came to be. Finally, Fridays will feature a fantastic fi nd or fashion item. This may include apparel, accessories,
house ware, or fun foodie items. I will also be on the lookout for local fashionistas who are interested in sharing their personal style in our Street Style section. I invite readers to explore to your hearts content. And to join in the conversation.
See you in the pages, on the web, and, most likely on the street.

B4 Wednesday Journal, November 2010 OAKPARK.COM | RIVERFOREST.COMMy Holiday Home
The harvest is in, the frost is on the pumpkin and Thanksgiv-ing is little more
than a week away. And although I won’t actually be heading “over the river and through the wood,” the image of travelling to grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving is as fresh in my mind today as it was when I fi rst had to sing those words back in grade school. The lyrics are from a poem by Lydia Marie Childs, written in 1844, and even though today’s lifestyles differ greatly from those days, the no-tion of anticipation and tradition remains constant and places me in just the right frame of mind as I prepare for my own Thanksgiving celebration.
As is well known to all who read this column, I unequivocally em-brace tradition for all holidays, and although I allow for some leeway on all others, I couldn’t possibly think of cooking anything else besides turkey on Thanksgiving. Here too, tradition rules as I opt for the con-ventional method for cooking my bird, which has to be in the oven. I know it’s all the rage to deep fry turkeys these days, but as delicious as it is, that method won’t produce any gravy, and even worse, there
won’t be any of those wonderful aromas com-ing from the kitchen.
Cooking a turkey that isn’t bone-dry can be challenging, especially when you have to cook it to an internal tempera-ture that won’t harm you dinner guests. The solution to this is brin-ing, a technique I always employ when cooking poultry. Here is all you need to know to produce a moist, wonderful tast-
ing bird. Brining works for all meats that
can easily dry out, such as chicken and pork. Shrimp that are brined for only 30 minutes are not only moister, but they’re crunchier as well. Try this technique on your guests this Thanksgiving and you’ll know why I’ve become such an ardent advocate. The results are spectacular, and your guests will tell you so. Have a safe, happy Thanksgiving!

It’s that time of year again: time to spend a chilly afternoon (or two) hanging lights on the front porch, choosing the perfect tree for the living room and decorating the front door with the wreath. When the
temperature drops and the string holding the Christmas tree to the top of the mini-van snaps, you might wonder why anyone would voluntarily go to the extreme for holiday decorating.
While we mere mortals may wonder exactly what’s behind those sparkling bea-cons that make us slow down the car as we drive by, those responsible for the dramatic displays say it’s all about their interpreta-tion of the holiday spirit.
Scott McAdam, president of McAdam Landscaping, has long helped area hom-
eowners turn their yards into winter wonderlands.
“In a normal year, we probably install about half a million lights in our residential and commercial work,” he says. “We work
with our customers to create a color palette to make things more
interesting.”McAdam notes that
even a tough econo-my doesn’t deter his dedicated customers.
“Once they start doing the light displays, they realize they are setting a standard for the neighborhood, and it’s hard to let that go,” he says. “I have one client who thought it was a good time to stop lighting his yard, but his neighbors kept asking him when the lights were going

up. Once he realized that his display was important to everyone, he kept doing it.”
McAdam Landscaping takes the fear out of holiday lights by doing all the heavy lifting for their customers. The company ensures that circuits don’t overload, calls in an electrician when necessary, sets everything on timers, and once the holiday season is over, stores all the equipment for next year.
The company is also happy to personalize holiday decorations to suit a client’s needs. During the 2009 holiday season, Patti Mul-doon and her family had been out of their River Forest home for months, awaiting the completion of a renovation. When the
home was fi nally fi nished in time for the holidays, she called on McAdam to literally gift wrap the house in a huge red bow.
Christine Baumbach, whose Oak Park home was featured on the 2009 Infant Welfare Society Holiday Housewalk, says her family motivates her elaborate holiday decorating as well. “Our decorating really refl ects our family’s traditions, hobbies and interests,” she says.
In the living room of their home, Baum-bach decorates the home’s original chande-lier, the curtain rods and the fi replace’s lead hood, to highlight the architectural details of the house. A collection of nutcrackers is a nod to her now-grown daughter’s partici-pation in the Nutcracker Ballet as a child.
In the library, the decorations have a sporting theme. Christine’s husband, Emil, is an avid fi sherman. Here his collection of fi shing lures, decoys and fi shing-related or-naments are on display. In the dining room, the decorations refl ect Emil’s interest in

bird watching, with bird houses and bird ornaments adding to the natural ambiance.
According to Christine, she and her husband decorate the rooms by theme every year because they love to do so.
“It was so great to be a part of the housewalk last year, because we did everything we always do but with a little extra oomph,” she says. “We’ve lived in this house for 30 years and raised our children here. The decorating is so worthwhile to me when my adult chil-dren come home and tell me it looks just like they remembered it from their days growing up here.”
Yvonne Steele, one of the partners behind River Forest garden design fi rm Smoke Tree, says her clients are going for a more natural theme in holiday decorating.
“Even when people are doing elabo-rate decorations, a lot of people are following a green theme, working more natural elements into their designs,” she explains.
Smoke Tree, which specializes in
container design as well as garden design, tries to incorporate nature into a customer’s holiday decorations. Accord-ing to Steele, “We do a lot of outdoor containers with evergreens, pinecones and blue or green junipers. We’ll also re-fl ect what’s already going on in clients’ homes, adding sparkle and texture as needed.”
Steele, who says many of her clients start out using Smoke Tree for garden design and keep using the services through the holidays, notes that for many, over-the-top decorations just means using more of what they already use.
“While lights are certainly something that adds some holiday fl air, a lot of our elaborate decorations just involve making larger designs with a unique ar-rangement of materials,” she says. ■
