Classroom 1 Interview

• Why do you have two couches? To provide a comfortable areas for students to read other than the carpet.

• Why are the students grouped in small groups? Cooperative learning groups/peer learning is very effective.

• I noticed a lamp by the bookcases? Do you utilize this? Yes. We like to dim some of the lights, and use the lamp to provide a quiet setting for our young readers.

• What is the purpose of the table in the back of the classroom? We use this table for support staff to pull some of our students for re-teaching. It can also serve as an alternate seat for a student who may be having a rough day.

Classroom 2 Interview

• Why do you have two small group tables? I have a larger class, and find it valuable to have these areas available. Especially for math labs.

• I noticed you did not have a carpet area for reading. What is your reasoning for this decision? Fifth graders are in the middle of transitioning to middle school. Middle school students do not have “carpet time.” I want them to begin their journeys to maturity.

• Do you have a reason as to where your desk is placed within the classroom? I have my desk tucked in the corner. For safety reasons, I can see the entrance of my room. Also, I like for learning to be centered in my classroom. Having my desk in the corner of the room, encourages me to remain in the midst of my students, working and learning with them instead of lecturing them and/or hiding behind my desk.

• Do you have a particular seating arrangement that you prefer? I like to switch things up every few weeks. I really enjoy the cooperative learning groups, as students learn a great deal when collaborating with their peers.
