Our 2011 activities
Child care– La Casa de mi Padre ex-panded its program, opening a transi-tion home for the children as they be-gin to reach the age of maturity. Outreach to families– Through our financial support, we contributed to counseling and language education for the families of our children. Mission teams– We sponsored three medical, child care, and construction mission teams with nearly 80 team members. Community service– We continued to work in the hometowns of the children God has placed at La Casa de mi Pa-

On Jan 12, 2011, MFHI lost one of its faithful servants with the passing of Brigadier General John D. Peters, USAF Ret. General Peters visited El Salvador and La Casa de
mi Padre during the early stages of the ministry and was instantly touched by the work and the children. He served as Vice President of the inaugural Board of Directors for My Father’s House International and remained involved until his health made such service impossible. General Peters tapped into his considerable knowledge and experience in engineering and project management to assist in the early development of La Finca. General Peters was born in 1922 and entered active military service in 1944. He served in three wars and received multiple decorations prior to his retirement in 1973. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on May 5, 2011.

On April 9, 2011, the popular contemporary Christian band Sanctus Real performed a concert to benefit La Casa de mi Padre. The concert was held in the wor-ship center at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Roanoke, Virginia. The crowd, which filled the audi-torium, enjoyed the music and ministry of Sanctus Real and BrightWork, an up and coming local band. Over $10,000 was raised, and we debuted a new video highlighting the ministry of La Casa de mi Padre.
Sanctus Real is a highly sought-after band with such re-cent hits as “Lead Me,” “The Re-deemer,” and “Forgiven.” Lead singer and songwriter, Matt Ham-mitt, shared his testimony of
the journey he and his wife are on: their son Bowen was born in September 2010 with a serious heart condition. Matt’s message was a powerful testimony of God’s care for His children. It was an enjoyable evening of music and encouragement. We’d like to thank Santus Real, BrightWork, the Church of the Holy Spirit, and Vision Commu-nications for making the evening possible.

Thank You Praise God from whom all bless-ings flow! Despite these challenging economic times, God richly blessed the ministry of La Casa de mi Padre in 2011. Launching the transition home greatly increased the operating budget. While we feel certain that this addition to the ministry is God-ordained, the financial cost is daunt-ing. As you, our donors, were made aware of these needs, God touched your hearts to give generously. But God’s blessings did not end there. As many of you know, Fundacion La Casa di mi Padre
purchased a lovely parcel of land in 2005, hoping to build homes and move the children to that location as
soon as possible. We were aware that the Lord would provide the funds for this project in His timing, and we have waited, not always patiently, for Him to bring in the money. In December, 2011, we received two separate substantial donations to the capital account, each of which was given with a pledge to complete the funding for the construction of a house at La
Finca! The fact that two commit-ments came from completely unre-lated sources, their donations arriv-ing in our mailbox on the same day, is evidence that God has indeed provided. Our donors are a varied group of people. Some have the financial ability to write large checks, but many have given smaller amounts faithfully, every month. Several
individuals were the driving force behind the recent capital donations and commitments, but others have given regularly to this capital account for years, anticipating the day when the building would begin. Each one is an essential part of this king-dom work.

Mission Journeys That Help
The Transition Home
In El Salvador, the govern-ment orphanages no longer care for children once they reach the age of 18. However, La Casa de
mi Padre has always been com-mitted to supporting its children until they are ready to live inde-pendently. In most Salvadoran families, children live at home through their university years until they marry. The staff and board of La Casa de mi Padre
have prayed fervently about how they might minister most effec-tively to their young adults. In January, a new transitional home opened for the eight oldest

2011 was a year for prayerful and critical reflection on the role of MFHI mission teams. The board of directors was introduced to the book When Helping Hurts
by Steve Corbett and Brian Fik-kert. The book exposes some common misconceptions about mission work and mistakes that teams frequently make. Well-intentioned efforts on the mission field unfortunately often do more harm than good. Corbett and Fikkert’s book challenges the North American conception of poverty which tends to focus only on economic conditions, when poverty in fact has at its root broken relationships
with God, our fellow man, our-selves, and with creation itself. The authors give practical advice about discerning when short-term relief is necessary and when financial aid actually creates de-pendency. They suggest how to do the work of poverty alleviation without hurting the poor and our-selves. As a result of studying this book, the mission team leaders on MFHI journeys have begun lead-ing teams through an intentional curriculum that includes sessions prior to the journey, devotions during the journey, and a debrief after the journey. This study is intended to encourage team
children who have made La Casa home. A house was donated to the ministry – an incredible bless-ing! Generous donors supplied a washing machine, refrigerator, stove, and furniture for the living room, dining room, and bed-rooms. La Casa hired Israel and Monica Hernandez to serve as house parents and oversee these young people as they transition into adulthood. When Israel and Monica first heard of the Transi-tion Home project, they felt called to participate in the ministry. They had previously spent three years in Argentina studying in seminary and mentoring young people. They later adopted their son David and feel that their love for him has prepared them for this next phase of their ministry to-gether. They see their role as “loving these young men and women as our own, building and
advising them as they move to an independent life.” They also acknowledge, “We will learn a lot from them as well.” Pray for Israel and Monica as they shepherd these young adults through perhaps the most challenging stage of their lives. Pray also that the God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10) will provide the monthly expenses for this new adventure.

The youth ministry at Fourth Presbyterian Church has an annual mission trip for its rising twelfth grade students. In the summer of 2010, they visited La Casa de mi Padre for the third year. It also happened to be the first time that youth pastor Corey Gray brought along one of his children, ten-year-old Anna. This is her account of how God used that trip – and continues to use it – to change her:
It was March 2010 when my parents asked me if I wanted to go to El Salvador on the seniors’ mission trip. I didn’t know if I really wanted to go. After a lot of prayer, I finally decided to go be-cause what ten-year-old gets to go on a mission trip and use her brand new passport? While I was there, I was impacted by how little the children had compared to me. I tried to imagine growing up like that, and I just couldn’t. The trip was a great experience, and once we left I couldn’t get my mind off some of the kids I met. It just sort of stuck with me. While planning my birthday pool party that next June, I was imagining all the gifts I would get. Then my mind wandered to La Casa. I had been wanting to help the children there for a while but had no idea what I could do. Then suddenly, I had an idea! My party was great even though none of my guests brought presents. Instead, I asked each guest to bring a donation to My Father’s House! I raised $195, and I was so excited. It made me feel great to do something to help my Salvadoran friends, and I want to find other ways to help.
