Digital Citizenship is demonstrating appropriate use of technology in regards to rules, laws, and ethics.

9 Elements of Digital Citizenship● Digital Access: When becoming a digital citizen, you must gain access to technology.

Although it may be easy for some, others may not have access to technology as they need or would like. As digital citizens, you should commit to helping those who may have limited to no access, gain some type of access to technology so that they can have digital access. Example: A teacher assigns a class project that requires spending time on the internet to do research, however, a few students in the class do not have access to the internet at home. This is now the teacher’s opportunity to find another way for the students to complete their projects. The best thing to do would be to allow the students who are unable to conduct research at home, come in early in the morning before class starts to do research and also do some research during class time.

● Digital Commerce: Digital commerce relates to the buying and selling of goods electronically. This is when you are purchasing items on the web such as clothing, shoes, toys, etc. Today, digital commerce has become very popular. Example: A young lady purchases a pair of shoes via Ebay online that will be shipped from China to the US.

● Digital Communication: Digital communication is one of the most popular elements of digital citizenship as today communication such as email, video chat, cells phones, etc. are all ways in which we digitally communicate. Also, social media is another way in which most people communicate today such as Facebook or SnapChat. You have to be careful when communicating digitally because if you are not careful what you post or say, you can set yourself up for trouble as most ways of communicating digitally have a way to trace information that is exchanged. Example: A teacher communicates with her students via a private facebook page set up for class discussion chats.

● Digital Literacy: Digital literacy simply means becoming digitally literate and having an understanding of what to teach and how to learn about all aspects of technology as well

as the use of technology. This includes teaching how to learn in a digital society or environment because it is different from just a normal learning environment. All of the elements of being a digital citizen coincide with a person being digitally literate. Example: A new student comes to a technology focused school from a school where the use of technology was very scarce, if any. It is the teacher’s duty to ensure that the new student learns how to learn in a technology based learning environment.

● Digital Etiquette: Digital etiquette simply is the proper way to conduct yourself digitally when using technology. When discussing digital etiquette, you must recognize inappropriate behavior in relation to using technology. Example: A teacher sets up a class discussion forum and a few students are using inappropriate behavior, therefore she has to redirect them and instruct them that they are not demonstrating appropriate digital etiquette.

● Digital Rights & Responsibilities: Digital rights and responsibilities are the rights and freedoms that digital citizens have. Digital citizens have rights to speech, privacy, etc. Example: A digital citizen has the right to post whatever he/she would like to post verbally on a social site such as Facebook.

● Digital Law: Digital law is the more serious element of them all because it deals with the ethical use of technology such as identity theft, hacking, etc. Violation of digital laws can cause one to get into some serious trouble. The laws apply to anyone who uses the internet. Example: A person buys a pair of shoes from nike.com, and they become a victim of identity theft after the purchase.

● Digital Health & Wellness: Digital health and wellness is a little different among the other elements because it focuses on the wellbeing of technology users. Digital wellbeing ranges from things such as eye safety to addition to the Internet. Example: A habitual online gamer becomes so addicted to his online gaming that he becomes frequently late to work, and may even call in just to finish a game with his online friends.

● Digital Security: Digital security refers to one being cautious of the dangers that can occur when utilizing technology frequently. There are precautions that an individual should take in order to prevent any harm coming about when online. Example: When an individual decides to make online purchases, make sure that the site has a secure checkout when entering in credit card information; sites such as PayPal are very useful in protecting identity and such.
