I thought going into an autistic classroom would come easy to me because I have an autistic nephew.

Then I sat and thought about it and figured I only have him to handle and keep under control, not 4-6 students with different types of autism

I didn’t realize how much planning goes into a classroom like this one because I don’t know what the strengths or weakness’s the students have or what type of Autism they have.

Neptune is a middle class community. The school has a stretch budget but

maintains to get by with minimal supplies.

Mostly a Spanish community and in culture.

They have computers and other technology devices in the classroom.

My interests are sports and being a people person.

I taught a classroom once and cant believe how much time and energy goes into teaching even just one person let alone a class.

I also taught sports through my volunteer job with Special Olympics throughout my high school career.

This experience has made me realize that there is a certain due diligence and patience needed to teach special needs children that I just do not have

The biggest impact of this project was our ability to gain the trust of the students and to actually see how much planning goes into the lesson plan for special need students.

The most important thing that I will take from this experience is the upmost respect that I have for special needs teachers, their passion, patience, and courage is truly a gift in the teaching profession and I respect it greatly.

I thought that my academic learning and preparing for my teaching profession would enable me to do this service learning with a clear understanding of how to teach a special need class. I have come to realize that one lesson plan is not enough, you have to have back-up lessons plans due to the mere unpredictability of the classroom. I have come to realize that maybe teaching special need students may not what I want to specialize in.
