Born on March 14, 1879 in Germany, Albert Einstein grew up in a
secular, middle-class Jewish family. His father, Hermann Einstein,
was a salesman and engineer who, with his brother, founded
Elektrotechnische Fabrik J. Einstein & Cie, a company that
manufactured electrical equipment in Munich, Germany. His mother,
the former Pauline Koch, ran the family household. Einstein had one
sister, Maja, born two years after him.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It
is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion
is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped
in awe, is as good as dead his eyes are closed. The insight into

rise to religion. To know what is impenetrable to us really exists,
manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant
beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most

true religiousness.
Einstein visited New York City for the first time on 2 April
1921, where he received an official welcome by Mayor John Francis
Hylan, followed by three weeks of lectures and receptions. He went
on to deliver several lectures at Columbia University and Princeton
University, and in Washington he accompanied representatives of the
National Academy of Science on a visit to the White House. On his
return to Europe he was the guest of the British statesman and
philosopher Viscount Haldane in London, where he met several
renowned scientific, intellectual and political figures, and
delivered a lecture at King's College.[51] [52]
