How do you catch colds and flu?

Cfrom person to person as droplets in the air. Sneezing or coughing produces more droplets and helps to spread the infection. Touching infected surfaces, such as door handles or when shaking hands, and then passing the virus from the hands to the mouth, nose or eyes is another route of infection.

cold or flu?The runny nose, headache, sore throat or “stuffy” feeling you get during a common cold is caused by one of many viruses - often a rhinovirus - and they can infect your nose, throat, sinuses and airways.

Flu symptoms are similar to those of a cold but they tend to be more severe, with muscle aches and pains, chills

The anti-infective properties of garlic have been recognised for centuries, and it has documented potency against a wide range of bacteria and viruses. Garlic has traditionally been used to

and may be useful for maintaining a strong, healthy immune system.

In addition to its immune system support, garlic helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.

Aged Garlic Extract™, unlike other garlic supplements, is made from organically-grown garlic cloves and is the result of a 20-month proprietary ageing process.

“The unique aging process eliminates the garlic odour, garlic breath and other harsh side effects, such as gastric irritation, that can occur with ordinary garlic.”

Aged Garlic Extract™ has been the subject of more than 400

healthy immune function throughout the winter months. 1 K Ried, O R Frank and N P Stocks, Aged garlic extract reduces blood pressure in hypertensives: a dose–response trial, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2012), 1-7.

The word “probiotic” literally means “for life”; but the term usually refers to supplements that contain living,

and by producing substances that actively deter these microorganisms. When selecting a probiotic supplement, the most important factor is the CFU

(Colony Forming Unit) count of viable cells. A higher number of bacteria will not be effective if they can’t survive the stomach, pass through the intestines and adhere to and colonize the small and large intestines. Ideally you should choose probiotic strains that can survive the acidic environment of the stomach.

Whilst there are many different strains of probiotic bacteria, those sourced from the human gut adhere to the intestinal tract and colonise better in the body compared to other types of bacteria. Human strains include: Lactobacillus

Shelf-stable probiotics that require no refrigeration are a good choice. The convenience of fridge-free means they can be used for people on the go and frequent travellers.

Vitamin C, best known as “the immunity vitamin”, is a water-soluble antioxidant

make their own Vitamin C this nutrient needs to be supplied through the diet.

Studies have shown that Vitamin C supports the body’s natural immunity during everyday infections such as the common cold. The body’s white blood cells also depend on Vitamin C to function normally. Vitamin C is an important part of a winter wellness programme.

Ester-C® is produced from Calcium Acerbate, using a patented, water-based process.

One of the metabolites (the compounds that form when your body breaks down a nutrient) of Vitamin C is Throne Acid. Throne Acid is standardised in Ester-C® as Calcium threonine.

Researchers have extensively studied Calcium threonine, and discovered that it is responsible for many of the differences between Ester-C® and standard Vitamin C.

These differences include Ester-C® being absorbed twice as fast, and lasting up to 24 hours in your body.

A childhood spent in the spotlight is hardly a recipe for creating a happy, confi dent adult, and often it has

very little to do with the personality of the celebrity in question. Fans can be fi ckle, journalists can be judgemental and in the new world dominated by social media, cruel opinions can cut even the thickest of skins.

MWP’s cover girl Bindi Irwin has had her share of critics. Her father – the late, great Crocodile Hunter – could also divide opinion, but his knockabout ways won him far more admirers than detractors. The camera fell in love with his daughter early, and the feeling was mutual, so when Leigh Robshaw set out to interview the teenager for this week’s issue, we just weren’t sure who we would meet.

Bindi is no media novice – she’s a conf dent, passionate young woman – but

we were also lucky to f nd a down-to-earth teenager who recognises the important legacy her family has given her. The Irwins have also put Beerwah on the map, and for that us locals should be grateful. Find out what makes Bindi tick, over the page.

In My Property Preview this week we are dispelling some myths that property buyers might have about our more expensive suburbs. Think your bank balance won’t stretch to a house in Minyama? Turn to page 36.

For something different, in agenda this week we are examining the importance of a name. Whether you are an Elizabeth or Eric, a Madi or Michael, do you ever feel you are treated unfairly because of your moniker? Head to page 24 to f nd out why.

And this week we bring you the exclusive f nalist list for the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network awards, over on page 22.

4 DAY FORECAST

SURF REPORTWith Steve Harris from Suburban SurfThis week still looks pretty sad in the hope for a long overdue swell. From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and he e’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

A. We have a lot of problems. The single greatest challenge we face today is an ever-exploding human population. This is a major issue facing our world today, and one that I certainly think we need to start discussing.

There are also serious issues with the consumptive use of wildlife. Wildlife is an important part of our world. Every time we lose an animal species it’s like losing a brick from the house; pretty soon the house just falls down.

My family and I are great believers in the non-consumptive use of wildlife.

Q. What can be done about these problems?A. The single biggest thing you can do to help wildlife is to never buy wildlife products. The world will never become vegetarian, but we can get the world to stop eating our wildlife. Animals like cows and chickens can be responsibly farmed, but wildlife like crocodiles and kangaroos cannot.

I don’t want to see snakes turned into boots, bags and belts and I do not want to see shark f n soup on the menu at a restaurant. When the buying stops, the killing can too.

Bindi Irwin has always appeared composed, eloquent and down-to-earth on our TV screens, but what’s she like when she’s

away from the cameras? On the countdown to her 15th birthday, MWP had an intimate chat with the girl who has grown up before our eyes.

Q. You have always appeared so confi dent in public, but have you ever felt overwhelmed by pressure to live up to your dad’s legacy?A. I feel very blessed because I have a wonderful life with a great family and so many wonderful people supporting me. I love doing what I do.

I want to carry on my dad’s legacy, and I’m in such a unique position to be able to spread my message of wildlife and conservation to the world. I think of myself as a teacher and I’m not only talking to adults, but also to kids.

I think it’s so important to empower kids because we are the next voters. We are the next decision makers, and we are the next generation making a difference on our planet.

Q. What do you see as Australia’s most pressing environmental issues?

Q. How do you cope with life in the spotlight?A. I live right in the middle of Australia Zoo, which is not like Hollywood. I’m surrounded by animals and my beautiful friends and family. And I have a mission in life – I’ve been put on this planet to make a difference in the world, and so that is what I’m going to do.

I think it’s wonderful to see people trying to make a change in their life to help earth. Even if it’s just turning the tap off while you brush your teeth or watering your garden at night, or recycling. It all helps.

Q. What do you love most about living on the Sunshine Coast?A. I am so lucky that I live in the most extraordinary place on planet earth. The Sunshine Coast really is beautiful one day, perfect the next.

I love climbing the Glass House Mountains of an afternoon or weekend. The Maleny hinterland is also spectacular – Mary Cairncross Park is a nice walk that we like to take during the afternoons. Lunch at Montville’s Flaxton Barn

is a favourite, and I love catching a movie at Sunshine Plaza. Our favourite food places in the world are the Terrace of Maleny and Reserve Restaurant in Maleny and also the Beerwah Hotel. They have the best food.

Robert also really likes visiting the Big Kart Track because, like a lot of boys, he loves nothing better than speeding along the track!

I believe that it is so important to support your local community; when we have time off we love to spend it in Australia. As a matter of fact, a few weeks ago we took a trip with some of my friends to Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef for some time off.

So many Australians take trips overseas, and never spend any time exploring their own backyards. Go for a drive to western Queensland and visit Winton, take a trip to Tasmania to check out Cradle Mountain or just go and explore the Blue Mountains.

Q. What are your hobbies?A. I love climbing mountains, bush hiking, going for a swim at the beach, mountain bike riding, and cooking. I enjoy stand-up paddle boarding of an afternoon and often take my paddle board along the coast.

My other great passion is reading. I’m a total book worm. Reading opens up whole new worlds and you can learn so much from a book.

Q. What do you do in an average week?A. My days are always new and different; I have heaps of adventures every day. I might be helping out at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital or visiting one of our new animals.

I go to school at Australia Zoo too. I’m enrolled in Brisbane School of Distance Education, which means I can travel with my school work and there’s no homework.

The best thing about living at Australia Zoo is I am surrounded by a family of animals and I’m able to share this family with everyone who comes to visit us at Australia Zoo.

We are the most hands-on zoo on the face of the earth. This means all of our visitors won’t just look at our animals, but get in with them. If you want to hold a koala, kiss a snake or feed an

elephant, you can. I believe that when you get to hold or touch an animal it ultimately touches you, and you get this feeling of wanting to protect that animal for future generations to come.

Q. How much of the year do you spend living at Australia Zoo and how often are you travelling?A. We spend about half the year at Australia Zoo and the other half travelling. Myself and my family are very privileged to be able to travel for both work and time off. Because Robert and I do distance education we’re able to travel with our school work. We’ve done school in some interesting places like trains, hotels, boats, in the car and f ying in planes.

Q. How do you juggle work commitments with school and leisure time?A. Distance education is f exible so I can work around my other commitments. Distance education was f rst designed for kids who live in the outback and can’t get to a school, because they might live on a cattle property four hours away from the nearest town. It works well for us because I can choose when I take time off.

If I have a big f lming project coming up, I can work through the school holidays, and then take that time off when we’re f lming, so that I don’t

have too many things happening in one day.

Q. Which school subjects do you love, and which ones are you not so keen on?A. I love English and learning about the world. I’m also completing TAFE certif cates in business and tourism. However, one subject that has never been my favourite is mathematics. I don’t really love it.

Q. Having studied through distance education, do you ever wish you’d attended a regular school?A. To be absolutely honest, I’m really happy to do distance education. I have friends at the school who I talk to during phone lessons and via email, and who come and visit the zoo. The other great thing is I have never had to deal with school bullying and peer pressure. Don’t you think that is great? I mean really, there are so many kids that have to put up with bullying at school and I have never had that problem.

Also, I can choose subjects that aren’t open to you at school; I’m able to pick the career path I take. I have so many friends all over the world and I get to travel, I get to see new cultures, eat new foods and learn about new wildlife.

[ 8 ] MY WEEKLY PREVIEW \ JULY 19, 2013 MYWEEKLYPREVIEW.COM.AU

<from previous page

I enjoy my life. I mean, I live in the middle of a zoo. Every morning, you have an alarm clock of birds and elephants and tigers and lemurs. It’s unbelievable. I’m living the dream.

Q. Do you have many friends your own age and what do you enjoy doing together?A. I love hanging out with friends and showing them around Australia Zoo. I especially like taking them in with all of our wildlife here. Also, because we travel so much I have made friends all over the world. My best mate lives in the Northern Territory, I have friends in western Queensland, Tasmania, New York, Los Angeles and even South Africa.

Q. You’re about to turn 15, the time when many girls are thinking about boys. Do you have anyone special in your life? A. I have friends that are boys and friends that are girls. Why make things complicated? One day I’m sure I will start dating and think about boys. But I’m really happy where I am at the moment and don’t think that I’m at

that stage in my life just yet. I’m sure the perfect person will come along some day, but I don’t think I should rush these things.

Q. What music are you into? A. I think that my favourite singers would be Jessica Mauboy, the Veronicas and John Williamson. I love their music and they have been great ambassadors for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors and have even performed at Australia Zoo. I also loved listening to the Angels with my dad.

Q. If you could invite fi ve people to dinner, who would they be and why?A. I have three people I admire most: my mum, my dad and my brother Robert. I admire my mum and dad because they are absolute heroes and they have done so much for conservation. They inspire me and have taught me so much; I hope I can be just like them when I grow up.

My little brother Robert is a wonderful brother. He makes me smile each day and I couldn’t live without him. However, if I had to choose f ve

people other than Mum, Dad and Robert, I would choose Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Leonardo da Vinci, Abraham Lincoln and Rainer Maria Rilke.

Q. Your birthdays at Australia Zoo are always great. What are you planning for your 15th birthday party this year? A. We’ll be turning the zoo into an island adventure. Enjoy a performance by the Ka Maeva Polynesian Dance Troupe, take a hula dancing workshop, and rock out to The Beach Boyz live in the Crocoseum.

There will also be a mechanical surfboard, rock climbing wall, laser tag, mud clay workshops, and your chance to get your photo taken with some of the animal stars from Return to Nim’s Island.

Q. What gift would you most like to receive for your birthday? A. I would love to see the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve protected from strip mining. Sign the petition onaustraliazoo.com.au to help make my birthday wish come true.

Schultz Toomey O’Brienwine-makers masterclass and wine symposium The Innovation Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast

Last Friday was a special day for local wine enthusiasts, as Schultz Toomey O’Brien held its annual celebration of the drop. Guests enjoyed a f ve-course degustation menu at the midday masterclass, and in the evening STO hosted the nation’s largest independently run wine symposium. Both events raised funds for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland.

TIPS FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEPBec Bartlett from Domayne Bedding at Maroochydore Homemaker Centre has the tips

Make Sleep A PriorityMany people claim that they can “get by” on a few hours of sleep, but this shortcut has short and long term effects on health. Six hours of quality sleep may be better than eight hours of fragmented sleep.

Keep A Regular Schedule: Seven Days A WeekVarying the hours of sleep can cause a jetlag condition, which describes an unnatural shift in sleep patterns.

Limit Caffeine & Other StimulantsThese prep the body for activity at the wrong time. The half life of caffeine is six hours, this means it takes six hours for the body to eliminate half of it. Regular coffee drinkers may not notice this as they have built up a tolerance.

Nap Only When NeededRegular naps could decrease sleep drive. The best length of a nap is 15-30 minutes; this prevents Delta sleep, which could cause you to wake up groggy.

Wind Down: Keep A RoutineAvoid stressful mental activities before bedtime; this will prevent the increase in adrenaline.

Eat Right, But Not Right Before BedtimeTime your evening meal to f nish at least three hours before bedtime.

Exercise Regularly, But Not Right Before BedtimeStrenuous activity should take place at least f ve to six hours before bedtime

in order to allow the core body temperature to return to normal.

Create The Perfect Sleep EnvironmentFactors that could affect your sleep environment that you should consider are noise, light, room temperature, the comfort of your mattress and pillow and the type of manchester that you use. It is the absence of bright light that f st signals the brain to sleep. Ideal climate is 18°C.

Know Your Sleeping PositionThis will affect the type of pillow and mattress that is right for you. 75% of Australians are side sleepers.

Select A Bed That’s Perfect For YouThe right bed will reduce pressure points. Select a bed that is wide enough, long enough and with the correct degree of comfort to avoid pressure points and discomfort.

AH Beard has created an extensive range of innovative products that offer pressure relieving comfort and support systems to conform to individual weight and movement. This provides reduced partner disturbance and combined with healthy sleep components assist in maximising the quality of your sleep.

The Sunshine Coast Council is aiming to slash operating costs by tapping

into the power of the sun to generate electricity.

Mayor Mark Jamieson says the council is planning to build a $24 to $30 million solar farm at Valdora near Coolum to meet half of the council’s electricity needs for the next 30 years.

“If our market-sounding exercises stack up, we would be the f rst council to build a solar farm at utility scale in Australia, and it will be potentially the largest in the nation,” Jamieson says. The move will save money and take the Coast a step closer to becoming the most sustainable region in Australia.

“Currently council spends about $11 million annually on electricity and like everyone else, has been exposed to the marked increases in power prices in recent years.

“Over the next three decades council is expected to pay in excess of $110 million for electricity, and the solar farm would have the potential to reduce that by many millions of dollars.”

He says the solar farm will also

generate $10 million for the local economy over the next 10 years and create 40 jobs during construction.

Councillor for New and Emerging Industries Stephen Robinson says more will be saved if the project life and output are greater than initial conservative estimates.

“Council would also be well placed to leverage investment in the solar farm project by continuing to develop the ‘clean-tech’ industry hub on the Sunshine Coast,” he says.

“The region would be able to export the skills developed during construction to similar projects within and outside Queensland – further diversifying our economy.”

SMALL BUSINESS IN FOCUS

With 85 per cent of Coast businesses employing fewer than

fi ve people, Queensland Small Business Week is a timely reminder of how important this sector is to our region.

Running from July 24 to 31, Queensland Small Business Week celebrates the contributions and efforts of small business owners and the employees who help them succeed.

Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce president Ross Hepworth says it’s important we recognise what small business can do, particularly in challenging conditions.

“It’s important for those businesses that are succeeding to be highlighted,” Hepworth says.

As part of the state-wide initiative the Queensland government has earmarked July 27 as Buy Locally Saturday, encouraging people to support their local businesses.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich is concerned at

[ L O C A L N E W S ]

the number of small businesses on the Coast that appear to be going out of business and says any buy locally initiatives are important.

“This is where many of our kids are going to get their jobs from so it’s really important to keep them,” Zubrinich says.

She says local businesses need to continue to make themselves as competitive and productive as possible in the environment they’re operating in.

Hepworth says having an online presence is imperative.

Dealing with diabetes step by stepTwo Buderim businesses have joined forces to launch the Walk the Store program to provide practical help for people with diabetes.

The innovative program, designed by Buderim Pharmacy principal Alistair Cook and Sunshine Coast Dietetics’ Sally Livock, aims to provide objective information about good food choices.

Participants will walk the supermarket aisles with a dietician, who can answer questions and help people make informed decisions about the best foods to maintain a healthy diet.

Livock says diabetic people can do a lot to manage their condition through diet, exercise and medication.

With National Diabetes Week on this week, people are being urged to think about their diet and lifestyle to help maintain optimum health.

For more information call 5445 1230 or 5479 4363.

Five new zones to be built at UnderWater WorldStage two of a two-year, $6.5 million refurbishment has been announced for UnderWater World.

The second stage reinvigoration program for the Mooloolaba tourist attraction will begin this month and when f nished, will include f ve new zones, new animal species and a new name.

The renovations are due for completion in January, when the aquarium will become part of the SEA LIFE brand.

Merlin Entertainment Group has committed to a multimillion-dollar investment program since acquiring UnderWater World in March 2012.

Compass Institute CEO David Dangerf eld says Ladies Oaks Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the organisation.

HOW QUEENSLAND WOULD LOOK UNDER MINOR PARTIES

[ N A T I O N A L N E W S ]

Katter’s Australia Party’s Queensland MP Shane Knuth, party leader Federal MP Bob Katter, and state members Ray Hopper and Rob Katter walk through the speaker’s green at Parliament House

AA

P

Imagine a Queensland where milk costs twice as much. Where you’d be forced to refuel your car with an ethanol blend.

Where children who hadn’t been immunised would be barred from child care centres, and parents would no longer have to shield youngsters from X-rated billboards.

Welcome to the alternative Queensland. It is what the state would look like if it were

being run by Labor and the minor parties.Although currently relegated to the sidelines

of politics, they are starting to get more attention. A recent poll shows Katter’s Australian Party, The United Australia Party and the Greens each have about f ve per cent of the vote.

But turning growing popularity into power won’t be as straightforward as it was at the 2012 poll.

The government plans to change electoral funding laws so that parties would need 10 per cent of votes before they pocket any cash.

The Greens say it could win its f rst Queensland seat at the 2015 state election, with the best chance in Brisbane’s west or here on the Sunshine Coast.

Spokesman Charles Worringham says his party will campaign on “big picture issues” to steer Queensland away from dependency on mining, and instead promote agriculture, tourism and further education.

Katter’s party hopes to increase its three seats to nine at the next election, and to hold the balance of power. The party has produced detailed policies and claimed some success.

Its proposal to shift or cull f ying fox colonies has more or less been adopted by the government. And its bill to ban sexy billboards

from child-friendly areas is also expected to be mirrored in government policy.

It’s unclear yet if Katter MP Shane Knuth will get support for a new milk-labelling system which he hopes will “bugger up” Coles and Woolworths.

Under the scheme milk labels will state whether farmers have received a fair price for the contents, giving consumers the power to stop the milk price war which has forced many dairy farmers off the land.

“We are making things happen in parliament, but the LNP is taking credit,” Knuth says.

Executive director of the Public Policy Institute, Scott Prasser, says it’s easy for minor parties to over-promise and under-deliver as they’ll never have to implement policy.

He says although policies are developed with the best intentions, it’s an appeal to particular supporters.

“There isn’t much policy coherence overall,” he says.

“Government is always about compromise.“Minority parties never want to be

government. They can never be government, they can only hope to exert some inf uence on particular issues from time to time.” AAP

HUGH LETS IT ALL HANG OUT

Hugh Jackman managed to upset locals at a sacred onsen in Japan during a

break in fi lming The Wolverine by failing to cover up his manhood.

The Australian actor wandered around naked during his time at the hot springs and it took him the best part of an hour to realise the hand towel he had been given at the entrance was to cover his privates.

“The place is separated male and female and they hand you a towel, a small washcloth and there are eight different types of tubs with heats of different temperatures,” says Jackman.

“I’m getting so hot and I’m using the towel they gave me to dip into the cold water and put it on my head and I was getting very strange looks from everybody.

“This was at the base of Mount Fuji and I was the only white person there. I thought, ‘Maybe this isn’t cool and I’m not allowed to be there’.

“I was feeling uncomfortable and f nally this guy in the tub grunts and points to my head and then grunts and points to my private parts. Finally I realised the towel was meant to be covering my privates and I’d spent about an hour just waltzing around this place with this thing in one hand and a beer in my other hand.”

Jackman reveals Mount Fuji became a major part of his time in Japan – he climbed the peak with his son Oscar. AAP

As Prince William and wife Catherine mull over names for their royal offspring, they would do well to heed

mounting evidence that a name can infl uence everything from your school grades and career choice to whom you marry and where you live.

Someone named Jacqueline or Steven will generally fare better in life than Latrina or Butch, say researchers, who also point to a phenomenon whereby the world’s fastest man is called Bolt, a TV weather forecaster Sara Blizzard, and a local librarian Mrs Storey.

“Your name can inf uence the assumptions that other people make about your character and background, and thus the chances you are given in

life,” says Richard Wiseman – a case in point, he’s a professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire.

“It can also be a sort of self-fulf lling prophecy. If your name sounds intelligent, successful and attractive, you are more likely to act those things.”

A f urry of studies in recent years has examined names as predictors of success.

They found that girls with perceived ‘feminine’ names like Isabella or Kayla are less likely to pursue maths or science than those named Taylor or Madison, and that pupils with perceived ‘lower status’ names get worse grades than others from the same background but with posher names.

“Names can really make a difference in

children’s lives,” says Northwestern University researcher David Figlio, who has written several papers on the topic.

Research has pointed to a clear, though probably subconscious, tendency for people to prefer things that resemble themselves – including the letters of their names. Denises are more likely to become dentists than dermatologists, while Lawrences are overrepresented among lawyers and Raymonds among radiologists.

The term ‘nominative determinism’ was coined by the journal New Scientist in 1994, which cited a paper on urinary incontinence by authors Splatt and Weedon.

There is even a Latin proverb for the

W t’s a ?

More than you might think. It seems your name

impacts on the type of career you will choose, how others

treat you, even how happy you will be and how long you live.

phenomenon, Nomen est omen, and the examples are bountiful: racing driver Scott Speed, radio gardening presenter Bob Flowerdew, singer Bill Medley, golfer Tiger Woods, poet William Wordsworth, former White House spokesman Larry Speakes, and Sue Yoo, a lawyer.

There are many ironic examples as well: former Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal (Jaime) Sin, pain

relief expert Dr Richard Payne and the British urologist Nicholas Burns-Cox.

Sometimes a name can denote disappointment.Students pursuing MBA degrees whose names

begin with a C or D have lower averages than those whose names begin with A or B, and one study even suggested that people whose initials spell out negative words like PIG were more likely to die prematurely, while those with positive initials like VIP live longer.

In a further twist, people named Louis are disproportionately represented in the city of US city of St Louis, Missouri and statistics show that people even tend to marry partners whose f rst or last names resemble their own.

Much of the evidence is anecdotal, and there are many people who succeed despite potentially problematic names – take Barack Hussein Obama, who joked in 2008, “I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn’t think I’d ever run for president.”

Others dealt a wildcard include celebrity

children Apple, Jermajesty, Moon Unit and Dweezil. And spare a thought for North West, Stan Still, Justin Case and Barb Dwyer. No kidding.

“Names make impressions, just as the way you clothe your [child] or, the you way you groom them makes an impression,” insists University of California emeritus psychology professor Albert Mehrabian, who wrote Benef cial and Harmful

Baby Names.“People with ‘undesirable’ names

do get treated differently,” he says. For example, people will give the same photograph a different score for attractiveness based only on the name, and the same exam paper with different signatures will be given two different marks.

“I attribute this to low teacher and societal expectations for the children,” says Figlio.

Mehrabian, who conducted a more than 10-year survey in the United States on the ‘attractiveness’ of names, lists Elizabeth, Jacqueline, Holly, Ann and Mary as the top f ve names for girls and James, Steven, Christopher, Kenneth and Thomas for boys.

At the bottom of the list were Elvira, Eula, Shar, Zoila and Latrina for girls and Butch, Rufus, Ozzie, Jock and Rip for boys.

Mehrabian has advice for all new parents, “Never spell a name in an unconventional way… the desirability prof le drops drastically.”

“Don’t try to be clever or artistic,” he adds. “Overall I would say avoid unusual names.”

Whatever the chosen name, we already know the new royal baby will be called ‘His/Her Royal Highness Prince/Princess (name) of Cambridge’.

“A royal prince or princess is immediately going to have a social identity that is quite distinct from his or her name,” says Figlio. “I would be stunned if names matter all that much for the children of the extremely famous.” AFP

RED VELVET CUPCAKESWhether it’s a child’s birthday party or afternoon tea with friends, red velvet cupcakes always make a colourful impression. This recipe is from Annette Sym’s latest book, Symply Too Good to Be True 7.

METHODPreheat oven to 180 degrees fan forced.Step 1: Cakes Place beetroot into a small bowl and blend until f ne using a stick blender. Leave to one side.Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, beat egg whites and sugar for one minute using an electric beater. Step 3: Add beetroot, essence, red colouring, Nutella, melted margarine and milk and beat until well-combined using a wooden spoon. Step 4: Sift f our into wet mix and gently fold using a wooden spoon. DO NOT BEAT as this will make the cupcakes tough. The less the

mixture is moved, the lighter the cupcake. Step 5: Place each cupcake case into a 12-cup muff n pan. Spoon an even amount of mixture into each case. Step 6: Bake 15–20 minutes or until f rm to touch in centre. Remove cupcakes onto a wire rack to cool.Step 7: Topping In a small mixing bowl place sifted icing sugar and cream cheese, beating together until blended. Refrigerate until required. Then either pipe or spoon equal amounts

of the topping in the centre of each cupcake. Step 8: Sugar sprinkles Stir red colouring into white sugar and mix until blended. Put topping and sugar sprinkles on cupcakes just before serving.Variation: To make red velvet cake, use a round 20cm cake tin coated with cooking spray. Bake in a 180 degree fan-forced oven for 35-40 minutes or until cooked to touch in centre. Turn onto a wire rack to cool. Then either ice with topping or make pink icing.Makes 12. Suitable for freezing.

You wouldn’t have noticed it, and it won’t show up on any maps but a small seismic

shift took place this week.Japan moved a couple of

steps closer to Germany. Not geographically. Just in an automotive sense.

Japan’s most prestigious and ambitious car maker, Lexus, made another impressive stride in its long-running quest to hunt down its German arch-rivals BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

The launch of the third

WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

generation Lexus IS models – the Oriental alternative to Benz’s C-Class, BMW’s 3-Series and Audi’s A4 – has narrowed the gap between Japan and Germany.

Already a worthy rival in terms of quality, refi nement and particularly value-for-money, Lexus has moved its premium mid-sizer within range of the Germans in terms of performance and emotional appeal.

The new IS looks, drives and sounds like a car worthy of consideration against the Deutsch uber-trio. And a fi rst-for-Australia

hybrid model will give Lexus a valuable weapon in this most hotly contested market segment.

The IS will be offered in three basic confi gurations – the V6 petrol-engined IS250 and fl agship IS350, plus the 2.5-litre, four-cylinder hybrid IS300H. All three feature high levels of standard specifi cation, with prices starting at an attractive $55,900 for the entry-level IS250, ranging up to $84,000 for the bells-and-whistles IS350 Sport Luxury.

[ M O T O R I N G ]

last week with a track test at Victoria’s famous Phillip Island racetrack, plus a spirited drive through the Yarra Valley outside Melbourne. Both environments revealed a car that is streets ahead of the strong-selling IS model it replaces in its handling, ride and general road manners.

The IS, f rst launched in Australia in 1997, has sold more than 35,000 units in Australia, helping put the nation into the top f ve Lexus markets globally.

The recently retired second-generation model, on sale since 2005, has averaged about 3300 sales annually over its model life but Lexus Australia chief executive Sean Hanley is conf dent that f gure will be eclipsed by the new model.

“Lexus has always been regarded as a very safe brand, respected for its great ref nement and value,” Hanley says. “We’ve got to go to the next level of excitement and we think the new IS delivers that.”

That excitement includes several design and equipment features linked directly to Lexus’ LFA supercar.

Lexus’ optimism for the new model is largely built on the back of the IS300H – the f rst hybrid in this segment, which Lexus conservatively expects to account for one-f fth of IS sales. Pricing starts at $58,900.

“We think that a $3000 outlay to get the hybrid technology, with all the advantages that brings, is very attractive and that represents the smallest gap between petrol and hybrid for any Lexus model,” Hanley says.

Australia will be one of a very few markets outside Japan where all three IS versions will be sold.

Thanks to a 70-millimetre increase in wheelbase and a 15-millimetre increase in front and rear track, the IS offers increased legroom and interior space.

Boot space is 480 litres and an almost-as-big 450 litres in the

hybrid, thanks to new batteries that, for the f rst time, are placed beneath the boot f oor.

While the new IS model has taken signif cant strides in terms of styling, equipment and driving dynamics, its

two V6 petrol engines will disappoint some, with both powerplants being carried over, virtually unchanged, from the previous model.

That leaves Lexus technically disadvantaged when compared to the far more eff cient turbocharged petrol and diesel options offered by all three of the German contenders.

While the Lexus hybrid will boast an eye-catching fuel consumption rating of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, the IS250 can achieve only 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres, while the potent IS350 has a hefty 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres of thirst.

Although the 350’s performance is truly impressive, the lack of progress on the fuel-eff ciency front will alienate some buyers. That is despite the addition of an all-new, highly impressive eight-speed automatic transmission in the f agship model.

The IS250 only gets the carry-over six-speed automatic, while the hybrid uses a constantly variable transmission, along with its supplementary electric motors, with six-speed ‘sports shift’ option.

The fuel economy argument aside, the IS provides a technological tour-de-force at prices that substantially undercut the German competitors.

Standard equipment across the IS range includes seven-inch colour display with remote-touch controller,

bi-xenon headlamps with LED driving lights and tail lights, heated and ventilated leather seats, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming with dual USB ports, drive-select mode to adjust suspension and tuning settings; eight airbags, vehicle dynamic integrated management, plus electric seats, windows and mirrors.

All models are conf gured for

the arrival of Lexus’ new Enform system, a web-connected suite of features that will bring impressive interactivity to the IS navigation and entertainment systems.

Also unique to the IS range is a new pedestrian safety system, which detects a pedestrian collision and automatically pops the bonnet up by 70 millimetres to cushion the head and torso impact.

Visually, the IS is stunning. The

company’s new signature ‘spindle grille’ features in a particularly aggressive front-end treatment, along with LED running lights reminiscent of the Nike swoosh. The company’s L-Finesse design ethic has been ref ned and enhanced with sculpted, f owing lower-body highlights and a chiselled hip-line.

The new IS feels inf nitely more stable, solid and conf dent in all driving conditions. The 3.5-litre V6

also provided a satisfyingly guttural exhaust note into the bargain.

On the open road, the car’s quietness and compliant ride were strongly in evidence.

OK, so Lexus might be stretching with its links to the sublime LFA. But this is a car that can certainly make the Earth move for the brand’s loyal but rather conservative customer base. All the way from Japan to Germany.

The Volkswagen Golf Mk 7 is the 2013 World Car of the Year and Cricks Maroochydore and Caloundra dealer principal Sam Bohner says it’s great for Australians.

“It is important to Australian motorists to know they can buy a truly exceptional car by world standards without spending a fortune,” Bohner says.

The World Car of the Year is chosen by 68 journalists from 27 countries.

“The great thing about the award is its criteria always comes back to the value-for-money equation. It is about volume-selling cars, cars that are affordable around the globe.”

This year is the fourth time in f ve years that Volkswagen has won.

Italian brand Fiat will re-introduce the Punto next month after a three-year Australian hiatus, before launching the all-new Panda light hatch in the fourth quarter of this year. Fiat Chrysler group Australia is also considering the release of three 500-litre models recently launched in Europe, but it will be more than 12 months before they reach local showrooms. Sales have increased across the Fiat and Alfa brands since prices were lowered in May, with some models getting a $5000 price drop.

Swedish car maker Volvo is developing high-tech safety systems designed to protect pedestrians and animals. The animal detection system arose from the need to reduce road collisions with Swedish native elk. Next year a system that detects pedestrians in the dark and can follow traff c autonomously will be released. Volvo has other futuristic technologies such as parking via a mobile phone and car-to-car communication that wirelessly advises other vehicles of dangerous obstacles such as ice or a motorist running a red light.

Many people move to the Sunshine Coast in search of a dream lifestyle – whether this means owning an

acreage retreat in the hinterland or living right on the water.

The Coast has no shortage of prestige addresses, and while many

locals may think a home in the top suburbs is out of their price range, a

new report from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is encouraging them to

think again. New sales data released by the REIQ has

turned up hidden treasures in some of Queensland’s most prestigious suburbs.

REIQ CEO Anton Kardash says this shows you don’t need to be a million dollar-plus buyer

to secure a property in a blue-chip area. “In all major regions, over the past 12 months,

there have been relatively affordable house sales in suburbs which are classif ed as some of the most desirable to live [in],” Kardash says.

“Of course, the old adage of buying the worst house in the best street, or the best suburb, still applies, but buying wisely in these prestigious locations will help to underpin capital growth, perhaps together with some sweat equity over time.”

A key example on the Sunshine Coast is Minyama, which is renowned for luxury canalfront properties such as those found on Minyama and Mooloolah islands. In the last f nancial year, Minyama’s highest recorded sale price was $6.75 million. But many Coast residents may

be surprised to learn the lowest sale price in Minyama was only $360,000.

In Brisbane, the riverside suburb of Hamilton recorded a high of $6.5 million and a low of $405,000, while on the Gold Coast, the buyers of The Corso splurged $6.35 million but another new Surfers Paradise resident paid only $454,000.

“This disparity in house price sales was found across all major regions which highlights that hidden treasures can still found, even in our most expensive suburbs, if you are prepared to look – and potentially wait – for them,” Kardash says.

Geoff Ohmsen from Platinum Properties says buyers often do dismiss a whole suburb without inspecting any properties, because they believe a home there will be beyond their budget.

“That mostly happens with Minyama,” he says.

“People will say, ‘Oh, I don’t want to go there, it’s too high’. We do get that.”

While the majority of Minyama properties are on the water and command a higher price, Ohmsen says around 35 per cent are dry blocks, which provide the suburb’s other benef ts – such as centrality and proximity to shops and amenities – but are more suited to a modest budget.

“Most people are surprised to learn they can get a f nished and done home for mid-$600,000s,” Ohmsen says.

The same goes for beachfront properties, such as homes in the Bokarina beach courts, which have previously sold for upwards of $1 million but can now be found in the $700,000s or $800,000s. The range of properties on offer in Bokarina, Buddina and Warana means buyers looking at properties for

less than $500,000 can also f nd a home there. “There are def nitely opportunities there,”

Ohmsen says. “You can still pick up older-style beachside homes for mid- to high-$300,000s, which will need some work, or others that are f nished and done might be up around the $600,000s.

“But there’s still plenty on offer.” Kardash says the latest f gures mean buyers

don’t need to miss out on the benef ts of their favourite suburb, just because they can’t afford the best of the best.

“The results are encouraging for upgraders, entry-level purchasers and investors alike, with prime location no longer an unrealistic criterion in the quest for the perfect Queensland property,” he says.

HOROSCOPESARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Mighty Mars boosts your creativity and stamina so it’s a wonderful weekend to tackle DIY projects that have been on the backburner. Avoid being blunt with a loved one.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Are you holding onto an aspiration that has passed its use-by date? Perhaps it’s time to let go. Your words have the power to move others, so make sure you choose them wisely.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Twins, it’s time to nurture your self-esteem. Be inspired by birthday great Carlos Santana, “I know that I am worth more than my house, my bank account, or any physical thing.”

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 With the sun, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter all moving through your sign, others are noticing you. So make sure you are putting on a good show.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Lions love to be in the public spotlight but this weekend’s stars encourage you to slow down and spend some quality time on your own. Solitude is soul food for you.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Today is the perfect time to review, revise, revisit, rehearse and research before Mercury moves forwards again tomorrow morning. Then you can launch new projects.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Aim to get the balance right between work obligations and family commitments this weekend. It will be difficult to please everyone but just do your best with lots of style.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Clear communication is the key to an enjoyable weekend for Scorpios. A relationship gets intense on Sunday, so be careful you don’t dredge up old issues that are better left alone.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Saturday is super for all types of sports and outdoor activities. Sunday is ideal for lazing in bed with the weekend papers, plus catching up with family and friends.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 It’s a fabulous weekend to tackle tasks that require concentration, sustained energy and close attention to detail. But make sure you listen closely to what a loved one has to say.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 The more organised you are at work, the better the outcome will be. If you’re looking for employment, it’s imperative that you are persistent – you are unlikely to get the first job you go for.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 You have a great desire to help others this weekend, as your compassionate side swings into action. Artistic pursuits are also favoured, as you tap into the creative Piscean within.

FISHING REPORTwith Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Tailor are on the bite just inside the Maroochy Bar (avoid the dredge) with chrome weighted lures working during the day and pillies on the rising tide at night. Enough bream are around for a feed with better quality at night. White bait and yabbies are the best baits.

SURF: Pincushion, Marcoola and Mudjimba are the places for quality tailor using pillies at dusk. The odd jew has been taken whilst feeding with the tailor, so be prepared, just in case. Sea bream will be off Alexandra Headland using mullet f llet and pilly pieces.

OFFSHORE: The outer Gneerings are producing some oversize sweetlip on whole pilchards or live baits. A few rat kingies are hanging around the Blinker. The Barwon Banks have been returning snapper, pearl perch and rosy job f sh.

FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon has been producing some nice bass on spinner baits, just off the rocks near the dam wall, and conditions have been ideal for trolling lures over the weedy patches. Another local impoundment f ring for small Mary River cod and bass is Borumba Dam, near Imbil.

The winds are coming from NNE today but swinging around to the NW by Sunday so the spots to head for are Happy Valley in the south, Sunshine Beach in the northern end of the Coast and Kawana pocket. Take the kids for a play as the swell isn’t going to be huge. Otherwise hit the golf courses – it will be good golf weather on Sunday. If you haven’t got kids and you reckon golf is a waste of time, I hear Bali has been pumping. Plus the beers are cheap and the weather is nicer than it is here.
