MWMS Newsletter October 28, 2016 From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents,
As you know, the 1st quarter ends next week on November 4, and report cards will be sent home shortly after on November 15. As we continue into November, the beginning of the second quarter also brings American Education Week from November 14 – 18, Meet and Greets on November 16, and parent conferences on November 21, 22, and 23.
Save the Date! Again this year, on Wednesday, November 16, Mayfield Woods will host “Meet and Greets” prior to conference week, during American Education Week. We recognize that sometimes an extended conference is not necessary but that you may still like to meet your child’s teachers and have a brief exchange about your child’s progress. This opportunity is especially appealing to parents who do not have academic concerns about their child but simply want to have conversations with several teachers in a quick way. In this situation, on a “first come, first served” basis, you will have an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher(s) at Meet and Greets.
Save the Date and Time! The Meet and Greets will be held on November 16 as follows:
• Related Arts teachers: 12:10 p.m. – 12:55 p.m. • 6th Grade teachers: 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. (Please do not park in the
bus loop due to afternoon dismissal) • 7th Grade teachers: 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. • 8th Grade teachers: 8:15 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. (Note: Please do not park in
the bus loop before 8:05 a.m. due to morning arrival)
We value the partnership we have with our parents and community, and hope you’ll be able to join us for our Meet & Greets!
Parent conferences will be the week after the Meet & Greets, on November 21, 22 and 23, 2016 as follows:
Monday, November 21 afternoon 12:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday, November 21 evening 5:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, November 22 afternoon 12:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 22 evening 5:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, November 23 morning* 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23 afternoon* 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
*Only teachers unable to attend evening conferences will be available during the day on Wednesday.
Like last year, HCPSS will use the "Synergy Conference Management" to schedule parent-teacher conferences. Starting Monday, November 7, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. until Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., parents can log into HCPSS Connect (http://www.hcpss.org/connect/) to view and select from the time slots available. Parents without online access may contact the Mayfield Woods Office of Student Services at 410-313-5025 for assistance in scheduling conferences. All conferences will be 10 minutes in length with 5 minutes of travel time, and will take place in the room identified when scheduling. Important note: In order to give as many parents as possible the opportunity to conference with teachers, an initial three (3) conference per student limit is necessary. Unfortunately, Synergy will not prevent you from scheduling more than 3 conferences, so we respectfully ask that you refrain from doing so. If you do schedule more than 3 conferences, we will have no choice but to delete all additional conferences after the first 3 chronologically. If you have a unique family situation, please contact me by November 4 at [email protected] or 410-313-5022. The good news is that after all parents have had the opportunity to schedule at least 3 conferences, we will re-open the conference window and you may sign up for as many additional conferences as you wish (over your initial 3), given the remaining slots available. The second conference window will open on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. To recap the timeline:
ü November 7, 3:00 p.m. – Parent-teacher conference sign-ups begin with a 3 conference limit per student
ü November 15, 9:00 a.m. – Parent-teacher conference sign-ups close
ü November 15, 3:00 p.m. – Parent-teacher conference window re-opens; parents may sign-up for as many conferences as they wish from the remaining slots available.
ü November 16 – “Meet and Greets” (times above) ü November 21 – Parent-teacher conferences (times above) ü November 22 – Parent-teacher conferences (times above) ü November 23 – Parent-teacher conferences (times above)
Please access the attached guide for step-by-step instructions for scheduling parent-teacher conferences. If you need to cancel conferences after November 15, contact the Mayfield Woods Office of Student Services at 410-313-5025 when conference cancellations are necessary. Before I close, I’d like to highlight the 3 days this week that our 6th graders spent at North Bay. What an excellent experience for our students! The kids were engaged in fun, hands-on, educational activities infused with positive messages about making good choices and being good citizens on our planet. The weather was beautiful, parents and teachers worked alongside our students, and the collaborative, cooperative spirit of our students made for a perfect experience. I am so proud of our 6th graders and know this is just the beginning of the great things they will accomplish in middle school and beyond. A very special thank you to the 40+ parents who gave their time and lots and lots of energy to be with our kids during this wonderful experience. Want to see pictures? A Message from the Health Room Sixth Grade Parents Please remember to stop by the health room and pick up medications that were sent to Outdoor Ed. Ms Adila is available during school hours for pick up. You may call the health room if other arrangements need to be made for pick up. Attendance at school is one of our greatest priorities. Student learning is much more successful when students are fully engaged in classroom lessons and activities. Therefore, we want to encourage attendance as much as possible
unless a student is truly ill. When students become ill during the school day, they are expected to go to the Health Room so that the cluster nurse, Ms. Breck, and health assistant, Ms. Mohamed, can assess the situation. This helps them get to know our students better and also be cognizant of any possible major health issues. Having this knowledge also helps our Health Room staff proactively address possible health issues that could affect larger groups of people, such as influenza, lice, or other illnesses. Our health room staff will communicate with the student's family if there is a need for an early dismissal or medical follow-up. If you are contacted by your son or daughter during the school day, please encourage them to report to the health room for evaluation. Thank you so much for your cooperation ... hopefully, this will allow us to provide the best care possible for all of our students! If you have any questions, please call Ms. Breck at or Ms. Mohamed at 410-313-5022. You may also email Ms. Breck at to [email protected].

G/T Enrichment Program
All students in our school are eligible to take part in opportunities available through our school wide G/T enrichment program. It’s not too late for your student to get involved in a G/T Instructional Seminar!
What are G/T Instructional Seminars?
G/T Instructional Seminars are designed to extend student interests beyond general exploratory experiences and are available to all interested students. Students receive advanced-level instruction and develop a broad range of skills in preparation for in-depth study. G/T seminars this year include Television Production, Book Club, Debate, Financial Literacy (Stock Market Game), Robotics, Youth Advocacy, Photography and Film Production. Students who want to participate are asked to complete a brief interest form and return it to the G/T Room 222.
More information about G/T Seminars and an interest form are available on the MWMS G/T Program website at http://mwmsgt.weebly.com/. Please contact Ms. Singleton, the G/T Resource Teacher, at [email protected] or 410-313-5022 with any questions.

Reading With My Peeps The “Reading With My Peeps” reading event is an opportunity for our students to engage in a book of their choice and then creatively express their favorite character, scene, or plot twist. These will be displayed at the Parent –Teacher conferences on November 21 and 22. Any variety of PEEPS can be used to create the sculpture, but the entire sculpture must be created from only PEEPS. The PEEPS may be cut. The size of the sculpture must be no larger than 25” x 30” X 36”. You, students, peers and community members will be able to vote for the sculptures of their choice by purchasing tickets. Money raised will go to the “Ellicott City Partnership” fund to restore from the flood damage, and to support the future of this event. Steps students should take:
Select and read a great book. Design a sculpture to depict a favorite character, scene, or cover of the book. Get the different colors and shapes of PEEPS.
There is a PEEP store in Washington Harbor with LOTS of PEEPS in all varieties all year round. We also will have a code for ordering on-‐line at a discount for our school only as well as have coupons for those who go to the store.
Start building their sculpture. You can use glue or make “Icing glue”, but realize that it will NOT be edible after sitting out for days or weeks. Categories / Awards
