DESCRIPTION

Each year, Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC), through the departments of Research and Institutional Assessment and Academic Affairs, conducts a survey of all graduates from the preceeding year, to determine the status of their employment and continuing education. In 2010, this survey was redesigned also to gauge overall satisfaction with academic programming as it relates to job preparedness, as well as to examine whether experiential learning was a factor in the employability of our graduates. The new survey was administered through the college’s Center for Democracy and Humanity via the AmeriCorps Job Ready Program in an effort to allowMWCC to measure the effectiveness of programmatic and staff efforts to help students achieve their individual career and educational goals. It is also used by students to investigate trends in the job market regarding the employment and/or transfer of students from particular programs.

The 2010 Graduate SurveyEach year, Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC), through the departments of Research and

Institutional Assessment and Academic Affairs, conducts a survey of all graduates from the

preceeding year, to determine the status of their employment and continuing education. In 2010, this

survey was redesigned also to gauge overall satisfaction with academic programming as it relates to

job preparedness, as well as to examine whether experiential learning was a factor in the

employability of our graduates. The new survey was administered through the college’s Center for

Democracy and Humanity via the AmeriCorps Job Ready Program in an effort to allow MWCC to

measure the effectiveness of programmatic and staff efforts to help students achieve their individual

career and educational goals. It is also used by students to investigate trends in the job market

regarding the employment and/or transfer of students from particular programs.

A survey for the class of 2010 was distributed to 665 graduates, who were awarded a total of 789

degrees and certificates. Students were asked to self-report on both employment and educational

status as well as satisfaction with their MWCC education. Of the 308 responses by program, 246

reported they were employed, which results in an overall placement rate of 79.9%. Salaries reported

were based on full-time employment only, which was designated as a minimum of 32 hours/week.

In 2010, MWCC graduated 665 students. Of the students who graduated, 31% transferred to either a

two-year or a four-year institution. The total overall transfer rate of 31% is based on the 665 total

graduates reported by the National Student Clearinghouse. The National Student Clearinghouse is a

database that tracks students who continue their education following graduation; MWCC is a

participating institution. Of the 31% of graduates who transferred to another institution, 1% (8)

transferred to a two-year institution and 30% (197) transferred to a four-year institution

We are committed to facilitating each student’s transition from the classroom to the workplace. The

Graduate Survey serves as an important tool for faculty, admissions and professional staff to

effectively advise students who are exploring their career options and major fields of study, as well as

for those students entering the job market.

Graduates overwhelmingly reported exceptional rates of preparedness with regard to the educational

outcomes surveyed. Responding graduates did, however, indicate some outcomes for which they felt

inadequately prepared. Those areas include preparation of students to become public speakers and

preparation of students to become engaged in politics and civic life. Other areas where graduates

indicated they could have used more preparation included use of mathematical reasoning and

effective use of computers and technology. Graduates indicated they felt very well prepared in the

areas of communication, critical thinking, problem solving, access and use of information, time

management, goal setting, working effectively with others, writing clearly and effectively, and
