Introduction This exercise has been designed to allow the instructor to choose a chemical that is relevant to the trainees.
Instructor Preparation Pick one of the following chemicals that is relevant to the work situation of the trainees for the exercise.
Chemical Exposure Level
Acetylene 5000 ppm Anhydrous ammonia 1000 ppm Caustic soda solution 3 mg/m3 Chlorine 1 ppm Dichloromethane 1000 ppm Dicrotophos 1.0 mg/m3 Gasoline 100 ppm Hydrochloric acid 10 ppm Mercury, metallic 1 mg/m3 Methyl isobutyl ketone 300 ppm PCB-containing transformer oil (54% chlorine) 0.0005 mg/m3 Perchloroethylene 200 ppm Sodium cyanide 20 mg/m3 Styrene monomer 500 ppm Sulfuric acid 5 mg/m3 Toluene 200 ppm Copy the answer key from this Instructor Guide for the material you have selected. Review it to assure that it is accurate. Look up any abbreviation or code you are not familiar with that is used for the compound you selected. Assemble enough Guides (hard copy or electronic) and Worksheets for each trainee. Extra Worksheets may be needed if trainees want to record the correct answer for their future use.

Conducting the exercises This is a performance measure to be completed by each trainee. Review the NIOSH Pocket Guide, following the instructor guidance for the program you are teaching. Distribute the Worksheets and Guides. Provide the trainees with the situation, and have them complete the Worksheet in about 15 minutes. Collect the Worksheets for grading. Review the correct answers as a class activity. Some trainees may wish to have another Worksheet to record the answers.
Grading the Worksheets Please note that an example of a Graded Student Worksheet is included in this packet. Review the entries of all participants. Mark a large “X” next to any incorrect answer, including any subparts. For example, Question 4 has eight parts that need to be graded. What to do with the worksheets after grading This exercise is part of “successful completion” for the program, and the results must be reported to NIEHS. Please forward the forms to UK so that tracking of trainee responses can be made across training centers, by question.
What to do if errors are found in the exercise Communicate errors immediately to your program director, who will forward them to the University of Cincinnati.
