The Delta Devils are 29-36-1 in openers all-time, with their last victory coming in 2014 - a 32-7 win over Faith University in Florida. Last season the team fell victim to a Roughrider State foe for the second consecutive year, dropping to a 35-7 decision to the University of North Dakota. PARTY LIKE IT’S 1991: Valley and Tennessee State meet for the second time in a season opener. The Delta Devils marched away with a 10-7 nailbiter - which is also the last MVSU victory against TSU. SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Tennessee State went 4-5 a season ago with a 3-4 mark in the Ohio Valley conference, placing them fth. Tiger alum Rod Reed returns for his 10th season in Nashville and boasts a 53-47 record. They remained in the middle of the pack in scoring with 29.3 points scored on average versus 32.1 points allowed. The Tigers run a balanced attack that leans slightly in favor of passing, as they played third in OVC last year with 276.2 yards through the air per game. Key returners include receiver Chris Rowland and his 57 catches as well as Mekhi Brown and Jeremiah Caine who combined for eight sacks during the season. THE DANCY ERA: Second year head coach Vincent Dancy brings in a reloaded roster, looking to improve on a 1-10 nish from a year ago. 62% of the players are newcomers to the team, with an even mix of JUCO and freshman, as well as ve transfers. The newcomers pair up with a roster of 30 returners. IT “MERRITS” A CELEBRATION: This weekend marks the 21st annual playing of the John A. Merritt Classic - the name given to Tennessee State’s opening game. The Tigers hold a 15-6 advantage in the contest, which is named after their head coach from 1967-1983. Merritt’s teams went 172-33-7 while he held court in Nashville. THE POWERS THAT BE: After revamping the offensive line in 2018, Jared Powers was promoted to offensive coordinator, taking over for Maurice Flowers. Joining him is a nearly new staff, with Terrance Barron promoted to a full-time receivers coach, and new additions in Dwyan Luckey (running backs) and Jacob Davis (tight ends). @MVSUDEVILSPORTS

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: For the third straight year, Valley will begin its season playing the fi rst two games away from Itta Bena. The road has been unkind to the Delta Devils recently, going 2-18 during that same three-year stretch, including 0-6 in their opening stanzas. Both victories came at Pine Bluff, where Valley will travel to on October 12th.

STICKING TO YOUR ROOTS: MVSU will stay in the southeast United States for the duration of the season. The Delta Devils will play six games at Rice-Totten Stadium - the most in Itta Bena since 2013 - and will travel to Nashville, Beaumont, Tex. (Lamar), Lorman, Miss. (Alcorn), Pine Bluff, Ark. (UAPB), and Huntsville, Ala. (Alabama A&M).

COMING IN VIA “SATELLITE”: MVSU legend Willie Totten returns to Itta Bena for his 20th season on the coaching staff. Totten will serve as assistant head coach and will work with the quarterbacks. After fi nishing his career with over 50 NCAA passing records, four All-American and First-Team All-SWAC honors - he worked nearly every job imaginable on the football team, including head coach from 2002-09, and has also served in the administration.

I’LL TAKE THE SNAP!: There are three players vying for the ability to control the snaps. Dejerric Bryant and his 1,011 yards of offense from a season ago is the frontrunner, but behind him are two transfers. Roger Totten - Willie’s nephew - comes from Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Totten fi nished 18-for-34 and 232 yards for the Golden Lions. Greenville, Mississippi native Chandler Robinson also returns for another year.

“TD” DOESN’T JUST STAND FOR TOUCHDOWN: Linebacker Tadarius Davis returns for his senior year after a solid junior campaign. A product of Manassas High School in Memphis, “TD” registered 101 tackles in 2018, with 49 solos and 52 assists. That number was second most in the SWAC last year and are the most tackles in Valley’s recorded history.

RUN THE BALL, COACH!: Under the fi rst year of the Dancy era, the Delta Devils brought back the run game. After a 2017 campaign where the Devils fi nished in the red with rushing yards, they rushed for 1160 in 2018. Additionally, the defense cut down on the opponents’ yardage gained as well, cutting it down from 3,038 to 2,569.

team outlookOffense

Quarterbacks: Senior Dejerric Bryant looks to retain the starter’s job he earned at the conclusion of last year. Bryant passed for 622 yards with four touchdowns and added 389 rushing yards with seven touchdowns. Battling him will be junior transfer Roger Totten (UAPB).

Running Backs: Mississippi Delta native John’Derrick Smith impressed with 520 total yards, including 296 on the ground. The Greenwood High School product reached the endzone four times as well. Backing him up will be sophomore Caleb Johnson from Memphis, who saw limited action during three games his freshman year.

Wide Receivers: Valley experiences an overhaul on the wide receiver side following the loss of All-SWAC performer Booker Chambers, along with Quinn McElfresh and Steven McIntosh. In their place will be a host of JUCO players, including Sedevyn Gray (Mississippi Gulf Coast), Johnny Wilson (Southwest Mississippi), and D.J. Clayton (East Mississippi).

Tight Ends: Senior Kelvin Lovett returns after catching a few passes during the 2018 campaign. Following the departure of Tyron Hundley, JUCO transfer Verandre White (Fort Scott) and freshman Axavier Green from Bellaire, Texas will also look to make an impact.

Offensive Line: The Delta Devils retain several key fi gures from the O-Line. Zach Sias, Qu’Juan Spradley, James Lofton, Anthony Phillips and Nari Masslieno all contributed a year ago and will be expected to again. Joining them in the trenches will be JUCO transfer Shedkeydrick Ross (Itawamba CC), and true freshman Mauriohn Underwood and Paul Jackson will help anchor the line.

DefenseDefensive Line: Derek Welch returns as coordinator for the 2nd year, and so does the 3-4 scheme. Also returning are three of the four starters up front from a year ago. Eric Powell, Ray Taylor and Jerry Garner will all be factors again, and David Vincent will also contribute as a graduate student. Joining the trio on the start is Romallis Carey, a JUCO product (Southwest Mississippi).

Linebackers: Tadarius Davis and his 101 tackles are back in the “WILL” position and Tracy Thompkins with his veteran experience returns to the “STAR” position. Joining them in the “MIKE” is sophomore Deione Reed from Monroe, Louisiana. Transfers Kaman Cooper (East Tennessee State) and VJ Swanier (East Central) will also be expected to produce.

Secondary: The back end of the defense will see the most turnover from a season ago, but senior Jamenta Shaw returns after a 40 tackle season in 2018. Rod Sylestre from Florida International and JUCO transfer Keonte’ Daniels (East Central) will look to hold down the safety spot.

Special TeamsKickers and Punters: Australian Justin Read comes back for his senior season after registering 65 punts in 2018. Hayden Schuster is a JUCO product (ASA College) and will be kicking for Valley this season.

Returners: With Booker Chambers gone, Valley will turn to D.J. Clayton from East Mississippi to handle the return jobs.

VINCENT DANCYHead Coach

In January 2018, Vincent Dancy took over the helm of Mississippi Valley’s football program as its 17th head football coach. Dancy, 33, is a native of Shuqualak, Mississippi and the son of Mississippi Valley State University alumnus Willie Dancy ‘74 and Evelyn Murray. He served as MVSU football’s defensive coordinator since Feb. 2015 before being appointed to the interim role in November 2017. MVSU Director of Athletics Dianthia Ford-Kee said promoting Dancy to the lead the Delta Devils is in the best interest of the program. “I have had the opportunity to evaluate his energy, synergy, and love for Mississippi Valley State University along with his desire to change the culture of this program,” said Ford-Kee. With all hands-on deck—the campus community, Itta Bena, Greenwood and surrounding communities, alumni, fans and most important our football athletes — I am confi dent that Coach Dancy will give us 100 percent of his effort to build a competitive program that will position MVSU football to win a SWAC Championship and the opportunity to vie for the National Black College Championship,” said Ford-Kee. “My goal is to build a championship program for the players, alumni, faculty, staff and fans of Mississippi Valley State University,” said Dancy. My immediate concerns are fi lling the gaps in those areas that we were missing as it relates to player personnel, and meeting with our alumni chapters and community stakeholders to reconnect and assist us in restoring our brand from the glory days of Delta Devil football.” “I will be in the trenches with my staff to build a program that meets the expectation of our fans,” he said. You will not want to miss our home opener and fan experience. The stakeholders have expectations for the new head coach, and I have expectations for myself. I will be accountable for this program’s success on and off the playing surface.”

In 2014, the 30-year old was the defensive coordinator for Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. The Lions defense fi nished 9th in Division II National Ranking in pass defense, in the school’s fi rst year of football in 50 years.

Prior to his one year stint at PC, Dancy spent four years at Jackson State University, 2009-2013, coaching the outside linebackers as a graduate assistant before he became the fulltime safeties coach. In 2012 Jackson State’s secondary led the conference in takeaways with 10 INTs. They were also ranked #1 in total defense several years.

Dancy graduated from Jackson State, where he was also a standout student-athlete. A four year letterman in football, Dancy was an All-SWAC performer at linebacker and safety.

Dancy obtained his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2006. He earned a master’s in 2008 from West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama, in Counseling and Psychology and as graduate assistant (Jackson State) he earned a second master’s in Physical Education.

rice-totten stadiumOriginally christened as Magnolia Field in 1958, Rice-Totten Stadium is entering it’s 62nd season of hosting Delta Devil football.

The stadium has been the collegiate stomping grounds for 25 future NFL players, including the Satellite Express combo of Jerry Rice and Willie Totten, for whom the stadium was renamed in 1999.

Totten returned as the coach of Delta Devil football in 2002, making him one of a dozen college to roam the sidelines in a place named after him. In 2005, the fi eld was named for Charles “Chuck” Prophet, an iconic athletic director and sports information director at MVSU.

Recent renovations include new taands on the east side, complete with handicap access on the Delta Devil level, and more reserved seating near midfi eld. These updates bring capacity to 10,000 fans.

The facility also features the Archie “Gunslinger” Cooley Devil’s Den at the south end zone. Also newly renovated, the building houses the football locker and meeting rooms, coaches’ offi ces and the Ashley Ambrose Lounge. Surrounding the fi eld is an eight lane outdoor track along with jumping pits.
