    PSYCHOLOGY-1

    FALL, 2014 (ONLINE)

    INSTRUCTOR: Clarence Romero, Ph.D.

TEXTBOOK: Essentials of Understanding Psychology, by Feldman, S. Robert, McGraw Hill, 9thEd.

FORMAT: Successful completion of this class is premised on the assumption that the student wants to learn and

that hard work and perseverance can be intellectually invigorating. If you accept this challenge,

continue reading. The course was designed so that by readingthe assigned chapters, engaging the

corresponding online exercises, and participating in TEAM activities, the student can gain the

knowledge appropriate to an introductory course in general psychology.

This course will promote critical thinking and an understanding of human individuality and

psychological dynamics. Critical thinking requires that we analyze our preconceived notions of the

world and the people in it. An awareness of human differences and similarities will lead to an

appreciation of those differences while maintaining respect for our individuality.

OBJECTIVES: 1. To provide a general survey of psychological constructs and related topics.

    2. To provide an understanding of the methods and techniques for establishing

    psychological data and testing hypotheses.

    3. To provide an opportunity (through discussion) for analysis, synthesis, and critical thinking.

EXAMS: Overall, you should read one chapter per week and be prepared to ask questions to facilitate

comprehension. There will be AN EXAMINATIONS every three weeks as per the attached schedule.

After you have negotiated the material and engaged the assigned PROMPTS in DISCUSSION BOARD,

there will be a mandatory fifty multiple choice question examination covering the three respective

chapters. You have a maximum of one minute per question for a total of fifty minutes per exam. In

addition, there will be one library research short answer written exam asking you to apply

psychoanalytic theory to Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and Heart of Darkness "by Joseph Conrad.

Please ask questions to facilitate comprehension. Homework begins IMMEDIATELY.

The essay is mandatory and will consist of five topics worth 10 points apiece for a total of fifty (50)points. More information on the format of the essay examination will follow during the course of the

semester. The questions will cover both assignments and be given on the day of the essay.

The final examination is mandatory and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. Examinations will

have equal point-value and cover both textbook assignments and the material covered in class.

There will be (NO) make-up examinations. Not taking an exam will result in zero points for that

particular exam. Except for the final examination, the lowest onl ine exam score will be dropped in

    tabulating your overall point total.

GRADES: You must pay for the McGraw-Hill program to take all the exams and complete the course. Beadvised that if, for any reason, you are unable to log into the program, you must contact McGraw-Hill

    for technical assistance.
