Washington St., INDY Many of our ILSR Club members are already aware that something NEW is brewing this Holiday Season in downtown Indianapolis, and yes, IT DOES RELATE directly to something near and dear to each of our hearts. An actual large, G gauge Holiday Train Exhibit called “Jingle Rails” is presently being built for display in downtown Indianapolis. Eiteljorg President and CEO John Vanansdall expects close to 50,000 visitors to the Eiteljorg during the Holiday Season, and the new large scale model railroad display created by Paul Busse is expected to be a “must see”, engaging crowd pleaser this Winter - and in future Holiday Seasons to come. Referring to the track plan (at right), you will notice that the railroad is built on four islands with Indianapolis being the first one you will see as you enter the exhibit. Several Indy landmarks will be recognizable including replicas of the Soldiers and Sailers Monument. Seven G Scale trains will running. From “Indianapolis”, you can work your way to the “West Coast” via the “Greater Southwest” or the “Northern Rockies”. There will be active trains running within the “islands” themselves, as well as a train inter-connecting the four islands. Should be quite an outstanding exhibit to say the least! Each of our ILSR Club Members are encouraged to visit this Jingle Rails exhibit sometime during it’s exhibit time and take family or friends with you. Reflecting On The Sept. 11 Four Club Tour Many in our ILSR Club look forward each summer to visiting new gardenrailroads that we have never seen before. It is like a Mini-Convention in that itdoes not require a huge expense, no fancy hotel stays, and we can do it all in oneday with friends and fellow Club members that we all know. Such was the case when 35 ILSR Club members and guests all travelled bymotor coach to Columbus, Ohio. I must compliment all the members of the Columbus Garden Railway Society for all the preparation work and the hosting all the Train Clubs for this gala event. The Hobby Shop visit, the lunch and thefriendly atmosphere at all five garden railroads we were privileged to see was trulysuperb!! In case you missed it, just look at the pictures on the next few pages and promise yourself that you will definitely make your reservations for next year.

Our 1st Stop was at “G Scale Junction”. This is It is said that “Everyone loves the B&O the large train hobby shop serving the Columbus and one other favorite railroad”. No area. Thanks for the “rest room break” as well as wonder when you can “dream” about admiring all of the large scale train items for sale. this beautiful Aristo B&O passenger E-8 There was a sizable lineup at the door with all the diesel on display (and for sale). purchasing going on. Mike Smith was keeping a nervous eye on his watch to get us all out and off to lunch.

Here we all are - off the bus and ready for LUNCH as prepared for us by the Columbus Club.

I had this train meet timed out perfectly, when the gentleman in the hat stepped out of nowhere and refused to move.

GREAT TRAIN EXPO - Oct. 9 & 10 Indiana State Fairgrounds - Indy

Three times each year, our ILSR Modular Division gets the opportunity to “showcase” their amazing, creative modular G Scale railroadto the general public. (October and January at the Great Train Expo; June at the “Strawberry Festival”) Of course, there is always lots of interesting rail-road stuff to see at these shows. I particularly enjoy seeing all the operating modular layouts in N, HO, O and G, but I admit I’m partial toward our ownClub’s G scale Modular Division. Here is what things looked like on Sat.P.M.

Chief CEO Mel Turner was overseeing to assure everything was running smoothly. At right, a steam locomotive is heading up a freight train.

From steam (above) to powerful diesel lash-upʼs (at left), there is some- thing for everyone here.

ANNUAL CLUB WATTS

MEETING AT TRAIN SHOP

" A big “THANK YOU” goes out to bothDavid Watts and Ross Buttrum for hosting ourOctober 30 Club meeting at the Train Shop. Themeeting was lots of fun as well as friendly and informative. I’m not aware if David holds any degrees in engineering, but he did stay up until 4:00 A.M. Sat. morning finishing the final details of his “Locomotive Pulling Weight Tower”. (see results data sheet on next page) Both steam anddiesel locomotives were attached to a string-line.As the locomotive advanced, the small moving platform inside the tower moved upward and picked up additional weight for every 3 inches of travel. At some point, every locomotive stalled outdue to wheel slippage. The amount of weight pull-ed (tractive effort) was duly recorded. There weredefinitely some surprises and disappointments.

David and Ross prepare a “Shay” to begin pulling.

President Mike Smith conducts the business portion of ourClub meeting. Treasurer Marion Hensley has received arather large, monetary gift to the Club treasury. Club officers are now deciding how to best make use of this gift. Bud Hunter explained a new plan to assist young persons (age 10-18) to get started with G gauge trains.

This new plan will be in the form of a “Grant”to qualified younger members. (above) DavidWatts is proud to demonstrate his “LocomotivePulling Weight Tower” that he engineered.

For Sale Former ILSR Club Member David Dipple passedaway quite suddenly in June of 2006. His Crammpt &Weedie R.R. was written up (with picture) in the June 2005 issue of this Newsletter. His wife Karen now wants to sell off all of David’s collection and has posted on our Club website some pictures and inventory of train items that are for sale. I urge any of our Club Members, if you have any interest at all in adding an extra train to yourown collection - or if you are just starting a large scale railroad, to check our Club Website and call Karen Dipple (812) 683-2632 (Huntingburg, Indiana). No selling prices are listed on our website, so be prepared to ask questions and make an offer. (generally ½ price of original retail price) Of special interest is an LGB 2-4-0 Southern RR steam loco. Also a new Aristo 2-8-2 Mikado steam loco that is still in the box and never run. - Bud

Welcome New Members Please welcome the following NEW member who recently joined our ILSR Train Club. We hope to see you at the next Train Club event. James Davis - Linden, Indiana

Garden Railroading In Oct. & Nov. - It is definitely “coat or sweater” weather. Leaves are everywhere, but after picking off the leaves on just the right-of- way, you can still enjoy running trains. In fact, after dark, you can’t see the fallen leaves anyway!
