Must Do
Deduce the meaning of Biomagnification• You may have heard that it is unsafe to eat a large quantity of
tuna fish because of the potential accumulation of mercury. Mercury is an element (abiotic factor) released from the burning of coal (other sources as well). Mercury can be toxic to humans in large quantities.

Deeper Look into PopulationsStudying and Measuring
Today
We are going to review what we have covered so far by working with vocabulary• In a series of activities
Vocab Part 1
• You will use only the textbooks available to define only the words on this handout that you are unfamiliar with.
• You may ask your peers at your table to help you define and understand these key terms that you do not understand.
• You have 15 minutes to do this.
Vocab Part 2
• You will have a vocabulary word from the list of words taped to your back. • You will not know what the word is• We will form a line• You will start with the person in front of you• You will then look at each others card• You will then take turns asking ONE question of the person across from you• You then may have ONE chance at guessing the identity of the word• You will then move to the next person• When you have the identity of your word (your done but you will continue to
help the others)
Vocab Part 3
• Using the cards from your backs, as a class we will put the vocabulary words in a logical order and determine how the words are connected.
• FLOW CHART
Vocab Part 4
• EXIT TICKET
• Muddy or Marvy
Must Do
Deduce the meaning of and compare and contrast the following terms• Density Dependent Factors• Density Independent Factors
• Density is amount of stuff in a space.
Studying and Measuring
• Ecologist are generally trying to make sense of a very complicated system
• In order to figure out how a population is affected by factors in that environment, ecologist often need to know the number of individuals in a given area
• Counting all the individuals is too complicated to do• So we use techniques to make estimates of numbers of individuals• Today we will look at transects, quadrants, and mark-recapture
methods
Transect
Quadrant
Lincoln-Petersen Index
We will do a modeling lab
Must Do
1. List three methods for investigating populations2. Discuss the effectiveness of using the Lincoln-Petersen Index
to estimate a population with reference to number of individuals marked and with regards to number of individuals sampled after individuals have been marked.
3. Label the following as Density Dependent or Density Independent Limiting Factors– Food supply, Rainfall, Flood, Parasites, Acidity, Disease, Drought, Competition,
and Predation
Order the following (small to big)
• Biomes• Biosphere • Community• Ecosystem• Population• Species/organism/individual
What are the reasons for the ways populations organize themselves, and what effect does this organization have on the environment?
Primary Succession
Secondary Succession
Niche
• Fundamental v. Realized Niche• Competitive exclusion
