* After Muhammad's death Muslims disagreed who should be the next leader (caliph).

* The Sunnis thought that caliphs should be chosen, while Shiites believed that caliphs should be descendants of Muhammad.

* During the Middle Ages, Islam spread to South and Central Asia as well as Northern Africa.

* Arab armies never conquered most of Europe.

* Muslims were tolerant of Jews and Christians who they referred to as "people of the book."
