    Introduction

    hestudyofmusicology attheUniversityof

    SouthernCaliforniahasalongandexcellent

    history.

    Itsfoundingandearlydevelopmentare

    intertwinedwiththeremarkablecareerofPauline

    Alderman(18931983). In1930shewas

    appointedtothefacultyofUSCsCollegeof

    Music,whereshetaughtprimarilytheoryandcomposition.Herintereststhenturnedtomusic

    history,andsheleftUSCtostudyatthe

    UniversityofEdinburghandlateratthe

    UniversityofStrasbourgundertheguidanceof

    YvonneRokseth.Herresearcheswere

    interruptedwhenwardescendeduponEurope,

    whereuponshereturnedtoLosAngelesandto

    USC. Followingthewarshecompletedher

    dissertation,AnthoineBossetandtheAirde

    Cour,forwhichshewasawardedin1946thefirst

    Ph.D.degree

    in

    music

    at

    this

    university.

    She

    was

    thefounderoftheDepartmentofMusicHistory

    andLiteratureanditsChairfrom1952untilher

    retirementin1960. Fromthenuntilherdeathin

    1983,PaulineAldermanremainedaninspiring

    presenceinthelivesofstudentsandfacultyat

    USC

    ThedepartmentthatPaulineAldermancreated

    continuedtoflourishafterherretirement. Inthe

    1960sand1970s,itspokewithaforeignaccent

    followingtheappointmenttoitsfacultyofArend

    KooleandPierreTagmann. Ph.D.degreesin

    musicologywereconferredduringtheseyears

    uponsuchleadingscholarsasJamesAnthony,

    FranklinZimmerman,HansLampl,Wallace

    Berry,andRichardWingell.

    Inthepresentdaythefacultyofthe

    DepartmentofMusicHistoryandLiteratureisat

    itslargestandmostdiverse,itsmembersleaders

    invariousfieldswithinthediscipline.

    Now,asinthepast,thestudyofmusicologyat

    USCinteractswithavibrantandmultifaceted

    musicalcultureintheThorntonSchoolofMusic

    andinLosAngelesatlarge.Musicologyatour

    universityrelatescloselytoperformanceitis

    informedbyperformance,justasperformanceisinformedbyhistoricalknowledge.Ourtraditional

    focusuponEuropeanmusichasbeenexpandedto

    embraceworldmusicaswellasjazzandpopular

    music. OurdepartmentsponsorsaMusicology

    Forumthatbringsthefieldstopscholarsto

    campusforlecturesanddiscussions.

    Graduatestudentstakelecturecoursesand

    seminarsthatcoverperiodsofmusichistory,

    knowledgeofmusicandteachitshistory,theory,

    andprinciplesofcriticismininstitutionsofhigher

    knowledgeofrelevantmusic,anawareness

    This

    part

    of

    the

    examinationrequiresabriefanalytic

    assessmentofeightscores.Normally,each

    ofthesescorescontainsanentireworkor

    anentiresectionofalongerwork,butfor

    somelongerpiecesasubstantialthough

    incompleteexcerptisgiven. English

    translationsareprovidedforvocalpieces

    whosetextsuseforeignlanguages. The

    scoresaretakenfromallerasofWestern

    musichistory,andtheymayinclude

    reproductionsofscoresusingearlymusical

    notation. Agoodresponseidentifiessalient

    featuresofstyleinthecompositionathand

    andplacestheworkinaplausiblehistorical

    context.

    hour). Twounidentifiedscoresone

    composedbefore1750,oneafterare

    provided. Theexamineechoosesoneof

    thesescoresandwritesadetailedanalysis

    ofthemusicthatitcontains. Arecordingis

    providedandapianomaybeused,butno

    otherreferencesourcesmaybeconsulted.

    Agoodresponseprovideshistoricaldata

    onthecompositionathand,aninsightfulanalysisofitsstyleandstructure,andan

    awarenessofandabilitytoapplypastand

    presentcriticaloranalyticstrategiesby

    whichtheworkcanbeprofitably

    understood.

    Atthetimeofthescreeningexamination,the

    facultyalsoreviewstermandresearchpapers

    writteninmusicologyclassesfromthe

    beginningofdoctoralstudy. Cleancopiesof
