MUSICAL RHAPSODYThe Monthly E-Newsletter of Rhapsody-Education Through Music

    Vol 1, Jan 1, 2013

    Dear Music Supporter,

Wishing you a very happy new year 2013 and some wonderful times ahead.

As a start into the new year, we have decided to institute this newsletter to keep the

Rhapsody family updated about our activities within and related to our various partnerschools across the city.

With a mission of staying true to the spirit of music for musics sake, we are proud to

represent the musical journeys of nearly 4000 children in Chennai. Rhapsodys mission of

Education Through Music places tremendous emphasis on musical intelligence and a

scientific approach to music education towards a childs growth and development1. Using a

specially developed methodology and curriculum delivered through our trained instructors

(all of whom are graduates/practitioners of music), Rhapsodys growth has been steady

    since its inception.

Starting with curricular partnerships with three schools in June 2012 (Lady Andal, The

Chettinad A Schools Foundation and Arsha Vidya Mandir), the Rhapsody Music and the

Mind module is now being implemented in over 11 schools as part of the school

    curriculum in these schools.

The Extra Curricular Music and the Globe module, a multi-genre music module is being

    followed in over 14 centres

Alongwith our partner, the Nalanda Way Foundation, our trainers and founder are activelyinvolved in the proliferation of music education among children from less privileged

backgrounds. The first ever E-Archive for children from the Corporation Schools of Chennai

the Chennai Music Library, was set up to aid trainers in such schools in musical pedagogy

    from around the world.

Starting Jan 1, 2013 Rhapsody has entered into a partnership with the Agastya Foundation,

catering to children from villages in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Both Anil Srinivasan and

Dr Sudha Raja are actively involved in interacting with curriculum development and

supporting trainers of over 700 villages of these two states.

We are happy that the Rhapsody family now includes Coimbatore (RG Group of Institutions)

    and Erode (CS Academy*).

Our faculty strength has now grown to 12 trainers under the baton of our principal trainer,

Dr Sudha Raja, herself an accomplished music educator and choral music instructor.

Meanwhile, our children have been busy performing and enthralling audiences across the

city. In August 2012, they took part in a special initiative aimed at increasing awareness for

environmental conservation in the first ever Bee Fest held at the Hyatt, Chennai alongwith

    Padma Bhushan Dr Rajeev Sethi.

In November 2012, we were proud partners of The Hindu Friday Review November Fest.

This event saw musicians of world stature interact with children in our various partner

    schools.

December 2012 saw the first ever Childrens Musical Rhapsody a three day tribute to the

vibrant Margazhi season. We presented children in performance at three of our partner

schools PSBB TP Road, Arsha Vidya Mandir and Bhavans Rajaji Vidyashram followed by

lectures and performances by eminent artists Unnikrishnan, Sikkil Gurucharan, Neyveli

Santhanagopalan, Dr Suma Sudhindra, H K Venkatram and Mysore Chandan Kumar. The

event was a tremendous success, thanks to the generosity of all our friends in the music

fraternity, our partner schools and the media.

As we prepare to participate in the first ever International Choir Collabaration (The Chicago

Childrens Choir along with the Rhapsody Kids Choir) on January 31, 2013, we look forward

to an exciting year of music making.

None of these achievements would have been possible without your support. We will

endeavour to work harder towards creating a bigger community for music and musical

    learning.

    Keep Listening!
