MUSICAL LITERACY FOR THE SINGING ACTOR (35A) Syllabus

Instructor: TBA Description: The primary goal of this class is to build a strong foundation for a healthy vocal technique. This technique is usable in all vocal styles of singing in the context of theatre production. The student will be working on the following:

• breath support • resonance • tone and range • learning ‘using’ the lyric as an actor • increasing relaxation • ease in singing • learning and developing vocal warm-ups

Objectives: The overall goal of this course is to provide the singing actor with tools for functioning successfully and competitively in auditions, rehearsals and other professional situations that require learning vocal music. In the process of striving for this goal, the student will develop a solid vocal technique, which will be useable in all types of singing. Materials Needed: Please bring to every class session:

• A recording device to record songs and vocal exercises. • Assigned sheet music • Notebook and pencil • Textbook

Grading: In order to receive a minimum passing grade in this course (C), the student must:

• Fully participate in all warm-up and singing activity • Successfully, accurately and thoroughly learn and memorize the music and

lyrics to all songs assigned. • Complete assigned readings, and be able to discuss them intelligently. • Attend all classes

Vocalises: It is expected that students will learn and eventually master any vocal exercises given during class, and devote comprehensive practice time to these exercises outside of class. Assigned Solos: It is expected that students will thoroughly and accurately learn any group and solo songs assigned by the instructor, and devote comprehensive practice time to these songs outside of class. Song Repertoire Fact Sheet: Students will complete a Song Repertoire Face Sheet (SRFS) for every song worked on in class.

The text for this class is Everyday Voice Care, the Lifestyle Guide for Singers and Talkers by Joanna Cazden. This text is published by Hal Leonard Books (halleonardbooks.com) and can be purchased in stores and online. Grading: Participation: 30% of final grade Mastery--vocalizes, assigned song and written work: 70% Attendance will also affect your grade. Student must attend all classes. The final grade will be lowered by one letter grade with each unexcused absence. Arriving late for two classes will equal an unexcused absence. MUSICAL THEATER DANCE (34A) Syllabus

Instructor: TBA Description: Students will be working with some of the many different dance styles prevalent in American Musical Theater, as well as overall technique. Emphasis will be on the development of proper placement, building strength, flexibility and learning techniques. Students will also learn awareness of musicality and artistic expression. Objective:

• To develop and expand knowledge of dance techniques • To develop mental stamina and speed required in executing the exercises • To develop correct placement • To understand the work of executing correct technique • Learn how to work safely for each reach individual student’s body capacity • To develop a broader vocabulary of dance terminology • To move to the rhythm and tempo of musical accompaniment • To develop a personal expression through movement

Dress code: At every class session:

• Wear dance attire: o Tight T-shirts, leotards, leggings, lightweight pants and/or jazz pants

• Big and baggy clothing is not acceptable • Everybody must wear a type of dance shoe • Hair must be pulled back and away from the face • No watches or jewelry

Attendance and Preparation: There are no excused absences. Students must be ready to dance on time. Grading: Class attendance and personal effort and improvement are crucial to the student’s grade. Because this is a technique class, the student’s presence and commitment are of the utmost importance. Grading will be based on participation, as demonstrated by attendance, effort, and attitude. Students must show improvement, demonstration and integration.

50%- Participation via attendance. 15%- Participation as demonstrated by effort and attitude

- Physical and mental enthusiasm and focus - Class behavior and community mindfulness - Self-teaching

35%- Improvement, demonstration and integration - Ability to learn and execute movement sequences and retain them rom class to

class - Embodiment or execution of recommended mechanics and concepts. - Visible improvement in the application of technical principals.

THEATER PRODUCTION AND PRACTICE (72) Syllabus

Instructor: TBA Course Description This class “The Performance Project” introduces the student to the fundamental rehearsal process culminating in performance. Students, acting as creative rather than interpretive artists, work on a collaborative, piece of musical theater using a process involving acting, singing, improvisational exercises and dramaturgy. Participants are assigned to a specific group and work with a Director/facilitator for the duration of the Summer Musical Theater Institute, creating a performance piece that is performed for the public on the last days of the Institute. Performance Project rehearsals provide time for research, creative exploration, collaborative discussion, organization, planning, and rehearsal. Course Goals and Objectives

Ø Develop collaboration skills for the purpose of strengthening ensemble building Ø Learn to know, trust and support classmates; learn to be a team player Ø Work towards developing an artistic sensibility for the overall production Ø Develop skills related to character creation and development Ø Enhance storytelling techniques Ø Challenges students to implement skills from morning classes into a fully realized

performance Ø Develop a sense of ownership and positive self-esteem in creating original work Ø Working on problem solving skills Ø Incorporate design elements (props, costumes, lights, sound) into piece

Class requirements: Each section will have its own set of graded assignments, required classwork and rules for participation. A syllabus for each section outlining the requirements and grading criteria will be distributed at the first class meeting. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Absences force your partner to be unable to work and tardiness disrupts the whole class. Every unexcused absence causes your grade to drop and two tardies equal one absence. Participation: Participation in class is an expectation. You should always be prepared to be called on, ready and eager to volunteer. The following will aid you in having a successful experience in this class:
