  • Music is the universal language of expression. However, playing a musical instrument requires practice and dexter-ity in order to be an enjoyable expressive outlet.

The most expressive musical instrument in existence is the human voice. re:voice is a musical instrument that the player plays with their voice. They can sing, hum, speak, gurgle, scream or otherwise vocalize into it. re:voice analyses the pitch, tone and volume of the player’s voice and re-interprets this, real-time, into musical sounds.

Musical instruments are tools of creative expression. It is vital that people can connect to them on the most intimate level.

  • WORKING PROTOTYPE >>>

Re:voice is wireless, and has a dock that provides audio connections and charges it. It also has buttons to scroll through different sounds and different ways of interpreting and resynthesiz-ing the player’s voice. The player connects the dock to speakers using the same cable they would use for an iPod.

    RE:vOIcE’s chaRGING DOcK >>>

  • Music is communication. When people communicate verbally, they use their hands to emphasize their expression. A patent-pending system detects its own physical orientation and how hard it’s being squeezed, al-lowing the player to control different aspects of the sound when vocalizing into it.

This provides a purely expressive, intuitive interface to expressive control, and requires very little cognitive effort, allowing the player to concentrate on using their voice. The pressure sensors can detect gestures including stroking, striking and squeezing.

  • Design creates the environment of the future, psychologically as well as physically. We must ensure it is inhabitable for humans.

The City has no time for nature. Urban living means people have little outdoor space. We have created a solu-tion that allows city dwellers to better use this limited space by growing their garden vertically.

Verticulture is more than just a vertical garden. It’s a haven for a variety of liv-ing things, encouraging the richness of biodiversity in our own back yards.

The product is a system of identical frames that can be stacked in different combinations to create a free-standing structure. Into this, modules are in-serted, which can house plants, birds, butterflies and other forms of nature. It’s designed to be easy to install and maintain.

  • A Steampunk inspired user-centered mo-bile phone concept. It has no display, no 3G, no mp3 player, no bells, no whistles. To use the phone, a paper punchcard with binary encoded information must be inserted. We chose to focus on people who play role playing games (RPG). The concept reflects the users’ frustration with bloated interfaces, and the desire to be more in touch with the hardware.

The brief was to create the ultimate iPhone killer mobile device, instead we turned the brief on its head and and made an exciting product with a strong mes-sage. Winner of ‘Most Mutated Design’ in a competition sponsered by O2 communications.

New technologies offer us ever-expanding capabilities. however, it is important not to allow them to dilute the true

    purpose of a design.

During the research phase of this project we made our best efforts to immerse ourselves in the cul-ture of the RPG gamer. This meant spending time in social situations with them, gaining their trust, trying to appreciate the things that excite them, bribing them with foreign delicacies, and meeting them on their own turf: the internet. These people, in general, proved to be quiet when meeting face to face, but sprung into life protected by the shells of their their online alter-egos.

  • My unique background of industrial design and computer science has often led me to concentrate on user interfaces, from interactive installations to websites and computer games.

I worked along side Hewlett Packard Labs, Seeper Ltd and Punchdrunk the-atre production company to develop a prototype for a “Mulitplatform Immersive Theatrical Experience”. This involved creating a virtual experience which mirrors the physical manifestation of the play. One member of the audience experiences the physical version and another the virtual version. At different points they can inter-act with eachother.

Every design must begin and end with the user. My biggest con-cern is how people experience my output, how they feel, the aftertaste it leaves.

  • I was employed by Smartslab, a firm who manufacture architectural digital displays, to research and develop mass user interfaces - i.e. ones designed for crowds rather than individual users.Inspired by such films as Minority Report, I built a number of prototypes including a camera that could count and track eyeballs and faces, a hand tracking system and a full body tracking system.

  • My first forray into product design was making electric guitars and basses, for myself and others. It has taught me a lot about pa-tience, attention to detail and working with wood.

My guitar design process usually starts with form-finding, using a pen and paper, but rapidly moves to full sized sculptural models, ensuring that the shape and fit is perfect for its future owner.

There is no replacement for pen and paper, but the best way to fully explore and refine a design is to sketch with real models.
