It is hard to believe that we are already talking about the 2018-2019 year, but here we are! We will be sending out action plans for those students with known medical conditions (i.e, asthma, severe allergies, diabetes, seizures, etc.) starting in the month of May. These action plans may be sent in to the high school over the summer but MUST be returned prior to the fi rst day of school in August. We appreciate your attention to these necessary details regarding your child’s health and well being.

It is important for the nurses in the health room to know if your child develops a new medical condition throughout the year, especially if they are placed on a new medication. It is important to have this information in the event of a medical emergency; please know that this information is kept strictly confi dential. If your child needs to take a medication during the school day, please have the Medication Administration Form completed by the Doctor and returned to us along with an original bottle. Remember that students MAY NOT bring in the medicine themselves, even if they are over the age of 18 years.

Attention parents of students that will be entering 11th grade in the fall of 2018. The Pennsylvania School Health Law requires that a physical examination be completed for all 11th graders. You will be receiving the physical forms in the mail in May. You may submit the completed form to the High School over the summer or to the health room when school begins in August. If your child’s physical is not due until after the start of school, please send it in upon completion.

***ATTENTION*** All incoming seniors will need a second Meningitis shot or risk exclusion from school. This is a State Mandate. Please make sure that you have this taken care of for your child before school starts in the fall.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call us here in the health room at 717-632-2548 x21810 or x21811

Please remember that if a student needs to have medication at school, it MUST be delivered to the nurse by a parent/guardian in the original bottle/package with the necessary prescription written by the physician.

Students are NOT permitted to transport medication to or from school at any time.

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWSEaster Egg Hunt

Every year, Student Council holds an Easter Egg Hunt for the district’s teachers and staff and their children. This year’s event was held on March 24th. Student Council likes to give back to everyone in the district to acknowledge and appreciate all that they do for our school. Up until the day of the event, the students in Student Council work hard to make everything at Easter Egg Hunt fun for the kids. There is a petting zoo, dancing, games, craft station, a short skit, and also an egg hunt. Kids from ages 1-9 enjoy themselves while going to all of the stations and they can get their picture taken with the Easter bunny! The students love watching their hard work pay off by seeing the kids and their parents have fun!

Children’s Theatre ProjectA Children’s Theatre Project will be traveling to the four elementary schools of South Western School Dis-trict and is being produced by high school students. This project is a way for children in grades K-5 to ex-perience live theatre, in a non-threatening environment, through activities and a live performance. The purpose of this experience is to hopefully inspire children to enjoy and possibly pursue theatre for themselves. An-other benefi t is to empower high school students to ex-plore the aspects of theatre direction and production. This year’s interactive presentation is The Jungle Book, adapted from the “Mowgli” Stories of Rudyard Kipling by Tim Kelly. The activities and live performances are being presented free of charge (donations will be graciously accepted). The dates, times, and venues are listed below.

Pre-Apprenticeship Opportunities Expanding for the 2018-2019 School YearThere are several opportunities for South Western students to participate in Pre-Apprenticeship Programs for the 2018-2019 school year. There are programs operated by the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce and York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL). The value of being involved in these programs is that they allow a student to determine if these are truly career fi elds they want to pursue in the future; and they also can give the student an advantage in being accepted into a paid Apprenticeship Program or to gain future employment. All programs are free to participants. In its’ second year of operation the Hanover Chamber Program is expanding the number of company partners from 4 (Elsner Engineering, KLK Welding, RH Sheppard/WABCO, Utz Quality Foods) to 6. Additional companies joining next year include; Abbottstown Industries and Precision Cut Industries. Pre Apprenticeships are off ered in Machining/Metals, Mechatronics, and Welding. A student would need to contact their Counselor to sign up for these programs. YCAL partnered with Kinsley Construction to off er a Pre-Apprenticeship in Construction this year. Of the three South Western participants, one of the students was hired by a Kinsley company and the two other students are applying for the Kinsley Apprenticeship Program. Next year YCAL will partner with The Manufacturer’s Association to off er a Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Manufacturing Technician. The deadline for the YCAL Programs is April 30, 2018. Additional information and an application can be found at www.ycal.us/preapprenticeship. Participating in the Pre-Apprenticeship Programs can certainly give a student a Competitive Edge when seeking a good job in the future. For additional information contact Mrs. Lisa Dennis, SWHS Career Counselor at [email protected] or 632-2548, ext. 21913.

SUMMER CAREER CAMPThe 10th Annual South Western High School Summer Career Camp will be held June 11-14, 2018 from 9-2 each day. The career camp allows students to learn about the wonderful career opportunities available to them in the Hanover Community. Each day will vary with visits to companies, sessions with South Western Alumni, and a walking tour of Downtown Hanover. Hours from the camp may be used to fulfi ll the hours for the Graduation Project. The camp is free to all participants and is open to students who will be in grades 10-12 for the 2018-2019 school year. For more information contact Mrs. Lisa Dennis, SWHS Career Counselor at [email protected] or 632-2548, ext. 21913.

JA STEMOn Thursday, March 15, 2018, the entire 9th grade participated in Junior Achievement’s STEM Summit. This program is intended to inspire in the fi elds of science, technology, engineering, and math. We had over 40-business volunteers join our students for this daylong program.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the next fi ve years, STEM jobs are projected to grow twice as quickly as jobs in other fi elds. Further, the majority of high paying jobs in the future will have some STEM components. The key is getting our students excited and interested in the course work to pre-pare them for these jobs. Every activity the students participated in during the STEM Summit was geared toward doing just that. Every 9th grade student had the opportunity to participate in hands-on competitions and experiments ranging from biology, physics, and chemistry experiments to math and engineering chal-lenges to a relay that includes walking on eggs to demonstrate structural engineering. Students listened to career panelists with some unique and very interesting jobs, talk about their daily work, and the education/training it took to achieve their goals. The students had a fun fi lled day exploring the wonders that STEM careers have to off er.
