EDITOR’S LETTERPage >>

2 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I’m intrigued by the idea that humans are the only beings that makemusic. Oh sure, whales call to each other, and birds chirp their“songs” – but I don’t think that qualifies as music any more than adog howling when an ambulance zooms past with siren blaring. And, I could be wrong, but I can’t find a Bible passage thatmentions angels making music. Even the angels that appeared tothe shepherds the night that Jesus was born weren’t singing, theywere saying the famous “Glory to God in the highest!”

So, maybe music is an even bigger deal than we realize. Maybe wehave barely begun to tap into the incredible richness of experiencethat it can provide. I’m sure there is more that we can do to foster alove for God from the depths of our souls.

That’s where these music-based Bible studies come in. Please do yourself a favor and download all 25 studies. (Yep! TWENTY-FIVE!) Use them as personal devotions, as small-group curriculum,as mid-week youth meeting plans, and in any other way you canthink of. You’ll discover a huge benefit for yourself and your youth ministry!

It’s a big deal!

Godspeed,

Ken McCoyEditor

I know. I know. I’m preaching to the choir. You’re a member YouthLeaders Only, which tells me that you’re already “into” music. Youunderstand its power, influence, and pervasiveness. You don’t reallyneed me to tell you that music is a big deal.

What I’m wondering, though, is why music is such a big deal?

You and I both know that music can teach. We learn a lot about life, love, and God from the music we hear. That’s one reason thesemusic-based Bible studies are so valuable. When you use music asa hook upon which to hang Biblical truth, your teaching becomesoh-so-much more effective.

And, you and I both know that music can influence how people feel.Imagine if they played “Mary Had A Little Lamb” on a flute beforethe kickoff at football games – I doubt if the crowd would be ontheir feet and cheering their lungs out!

So, I have this idea about what makes music such a big deal. It’s an opinion, really – I haven’t studied it out far enough to say this is hard-and-fast truth, but the idea intrigues me. Here goes: I believe music is the language of the soul. I think it might havesomething to do with humankind being created “in the image ofGod.” We can understand easily the Bible’s command to love Godwith all our heart, mind, strength – but soul? How do we love Godwith our soul?

I think we love God with all our soul through music.

Music Is A Big Deal

FOR KING AND COUNTRY

ThemeLove

ObjectiveStudents think through the supreme fruit overarching fruit of the Spirit and why LOVE is at the core of authentic Christian living.

Warm UpPsychologist – Players sit in a circle. One player is selected as the psychologist and that player must leave the room. While psychologist is gone, facilitator asks group to come up with one prob-lem they all have such as: Everyone is afraid of walls; Everyone thinks they are on the moon; Everyone believes they are three years old; Everyone is late for a class. The facilitator tells the psy-chologist when to return.. The rest of the players then must subtly act out or have conversations that give hints about what the problem is. The psychologist gets three guesses to identify what the prob-lem is. (This game and others available at youthgroupgames.org.)

TransitionExplain that one of the jobs of a psychologist is to diagnose and help people overcome their problems. Often, problems on the surface are only symptoms of deeper root causes.

Discuss:

•If a psychologist were to diagnose you as being an authentic Christian, what kind of “symptoms” would he or she likely find in your lifestyle or personality?

•In your opinion, what is the supreme symptom of a person who catches the authentic “disease” of new life in Christ?

The VideoExplain that For King and Country has a video that deals with the issue that God puts front and center as the “evi-dence” of authentic followers of Jesus. Have the students pay careful attention to images and lyrics that stand out as you play the video.

TransitionAsk students for their reaction to the video. What did they like about the song? How did they interpret the imagery? Did anything answer or raise questions for them?

Bible StudyAsk if there are students who know the “address” of the famous passage this song is based on. Then read 1 Cor-inthians 12:31-13:8 as a group and point the students to the Ponderings section of the Student Guide. Share with the students that in the ancient

Greek language there were four prima-ry words that could be translated into English as “love.” Have the student fill in the blanks as you briefly explain each one…

• STORGE – having affection for something or someone. It was simi-lar to our idea of strongly “liking.”

• EROS – the romantic and physical expression of love.

• PHILEO – a brotherly “friendship” kind of love. This is the root of the word Philadelphia, the city of broth-erly love.

• AGAPE – the deepest kind of love. Sometimes described as “uncondi-tional love,” agape is the divine kind of love God has for humanity and the kind of love Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 13.

Explain that loving the way Jesus loved is no mere human endeavor. While the first three kinds of love are all part of the natural world, agape is supernatural and can only be consistently lived by a person who has been infused with the power of God through faith in Christ. Christianity is not a difficult life – it’s an impossible life! Explain that there is only one Person who can live the life of agape love consistently, and His name is Jesus.

The essence of agape is not or us to try to conjure up feelings of love for people they really don’t like. But rather, it is to view ourselves as a conduit through

which the love of Jesus flows to others. Explain that Paul taught this reality to the Galatians. (Galatians 2:20)

Living a life of Divine love is not some-thing you can “do” in and of yourself. When For King and Country sings “Let my love be the proof of Your love…” they’re asking for Jesus to live super-naturally through their own unique personalities and expressions of Him.

Wrap UpDirect the students to the Promptings section of the Student Guide. Discuss:

•Have you ever felt you truly experi-enced the agape love of Christ through another person? If so, are you willing to share about that experience?

•Jesus said that the world would know His followers by their love for each other – and also that we should even love our enemies. What is the essential difference between trying to love some-one on your own strength and allowing the love of Christ to flow through you?

•Do you think your spiritual life would change if, instead of asking God to help you be more loving, you began to pray “God, love others through me today”? Explain your thoughts.

Close in a prayer that asks that the hearts of each student would be open as a conduit of divine love that would flow as naturally as possible through them.

REMEDY DRIVE

ThemeSalvation; Regeneration (New Life)

ObjectiveThrough sin and disobedience came death – through Jesus Christ came life. God longs for us to have life. In the course of our lives there will be times when we feel “dead” due to circumstances or our own destructive choices. In this lesson, students will discover the priority of recognizing God as one who can deliver us from death and bring us back to life.

Warm Up Invite a paramedic, nurse, doctor, or someone with life-saving training to come and give a ten-minute presentation that explains the steps followed in most life-saving procedures. Before he or she begins, have your group turn to the Student Guide How to Save a Life section and follow the directions there.

Transition Discuss:

•Why does being a “life saver” require so much training?

•What is complicated about saving someone’s life?

•Who do you know who has been resuscitated through one form or another?

Say something like, “Life and death is a part of this existence. Though we will all eventually die, nobody likes to see someone die who could have been saved. As God’s creation there is no reason for any of us to ‘die’ in our sins. God, through Jesus Christ, is ready to deliver us and give us new life. In this lesson we will discover the importance of salvation and what it means to brought back to life.”

The SongAsk your group to follow the Help, I Need Somebody directions as the video plays. When the video has finished, have different people in your group offer a few of their responses. Discuss the questions below as a way of reflecting on the lyrics:

•How would you define the status of the person described in this song?

•Why is there hope?

•What is refreshingly honest about this song?

•Why is an honest assessment of one’s self important to our faith?

TransitionSay something like, “The Apostle Paul knew all about near-death experiences and deliverance. Those who sought to bring him down often threatened his physical and spiritual life. We are going to look at a Bible passage relating the condition of a life on the edge of death and the beauty of rescue.”

Bible Study Tell your group to find partners. Give them about ten minutes to work through the My Weakness, New Life assignment and then come back together. Allow your group time to share their results and then follow up with these questions:

•What do you think “lose heart” means?

•How can someone not “lose heart”?

•Why is knowing that light can shine out of darkness important?

•What makes you the most hopeful after reading verses 7-10?

•How would you summarize what is meant in verse 10?

•How do these words relate to the lyrics of the song?

Wrap UpInvite everybody to come back together. Give them a few moments to communicate their responses. Play the video again as the students complete the CPR In My Life section. Then, close the time by having each person prayed for by another member in the group.

“I might be lost, but I am not a ___________ cause.”

CPR In My LifeMake a list of “dead” areas you would identify in your life as needing “resuscitation.” Areas to consider might be prayer life, Bible study, healthy friendships, etc.

My Weakness, New LifeFind a partner, read the Bible passage, and then follow the directions below:

2 Corinthians 4:1-10 (NIV) – 1Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

•Circle what you feel to be the key (most important) words in this passage.•Draw a square around statements declaring what “we” do instead of “losing

heart.”•Draw a “squiggly” line under what the “god of this age” has done. •Circle the statement telling us what God said in verse 6.•Underline the most important words of verses 7-10.

GROUP 1 CREW

ThemeGod’s Promises

ObjectiveStudents will learn that the Lord has promised He will always be there for them, giving them strength and encouragement to get through their struggles, even when their circum-stances may not be ideal.

Warm UpPass out the Student Guide and have students answer the questions under Mountains and Valleys. After five or so minutes, open up discussion:

•When are times that you feel like you’re in a valley?

•When are times you feel on top of the mountains?

•On any average day, do you spend more time on the mountain or in the valley?

•Why do you think that is?”

TransitionSay something like, “Oftentimes, we tend to feel defeated during times of struggle, without realizing that we have to start in a valley to get to the mountaintop.”

The VideoTell students that Group 1 Crew and Chris August has a song that talks about times in “the valleys” of our lives. The song focuses on how we shouldn’t be discouraged, but take comfort in the promise the Lord has given us, that He will never leave us in times of trouble. Have them fill out the “Linger-ing Lyrics” section while the video plays. Encourage them to take note of the different “props” (Bibles on the floor, pages of Scripture hanging from ceiling, Bible verses written on mirrors, walls, etc.) in the video.

TransitionSpend time in discussion over some of the lyrics that really stood out to some of the students. If there is a unanimous phrase that really stood out to the students, ask why it made such an impact on them. Then talk about the

“props” in the video and the message that the students think is being rein-forced by those “props.”

Bible StudyHave student volunteers read the verses aloud. After each verse, give the group time to write down their responses to the questions under the He Said… section.

•Deuteronomy 31:6 – Sometimes, we can feel as though God has left us in certain situations. According to this verse, when has God left us? NEVER! He promises He will ALWAYS be with us.

•Galatians 6:9 – What do you think this verse means? Do you get tired of doing good when it feels as though it doesn’t make a difference? This verse tells us that there is benefit if we continue to do good. The harvest it talks about shows that there is something beneficial coming from the work of good. Is doing good worth the effort even when you may not think it’s worth it? YES, it is ALWAYS worth it!

•1 Corinthians 10:13 – When we find ourselves in the valley, it can be due to temptation that is constantly around us. Peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, bullying, lust, cheating on a test, etc. This verse is key to the song; the Lord will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle, and He will ALWAYS provide a way out. How often do we see the way out and CHOOSE not to take it? Why do we continue to choose temptation over escape? How can we be more aware of the way out of temptation?

•Psalm 34:18 – Aside from tempta-tion, there are times when we just feel down and out. Parents fight, money is slim, school isn’t going well, etc.

Our valleys become so deep that they begin to feel more like graves that we can’t escape. What does this verse say about feeling this broken?

Wrap UpOur valleys are only as deep as our outlook. We need to take comfort in the promise that God will NEVER leave us in our times of trouble. We need to continue to strive towards doing good, knowing that the Lord cares about our brokenness. Ask stu-dents what the group can be praying for them about throughout the week. Some students aren’t comfortable praying for another student, if that’s the case with your group, be sure to jump in and pray for them. However, encourage each student to volunteer to pray for that specific prayer. Close with prayer for those students strug-gling in the “valleys” of life. When you’re finished praying, repeat the promise of Deuteronomy 31:6.

OWL CITY

ThemeFriendship: Joy of

ObjectiveStudents will discover that sharing good times with friends plays a role in being a Christ-follower.

Warm UpWho doesn’t like a good party? – Hand out the Student Guides. Brainstorm events that would make them want to throw a big party. Some might include graduations, birthdays, getting a job or new car, etc. Then ask each student to list in the Top 5 section five friends they would invite to come and share their excitement.

TransitionPeople sometimes think that when you’re a Christ-follower you can’t have any fun. This video presents a different perspective.

The VideoStudents watch the video. In the It’s Always a Good Time section of the student worksheet, have them list what makes this a good time.

TransitionAfter the video, ask some students to share their “good time” list. You may need to discuss the meaning of some phrases like “get down tonight.” You will also want to clarify and discuss the difference between what many call a “party lifestyle” and having a “good time with friends.”

Bible StudyAsk a volunteer to read Luke 15:1–2 aloud. Then ask, “Why were the Phari-sees mad at Jesus?” (He was hanging out with “sinners”) Then tell your group that you are going to explore how Jesus answered their accusations.

Divide students into three groups to explore the following three sections of Luke 15.

1. Luke 15:3-7

2. Luke 15:8-10

3. Luke 15:11-24

Have each group work together to answer these questions on the student worksheet:

•What problem did they face? (lost sheep, lost coin, lost son)

•Why were they filled with excitement? (found sheep, found coin, found son)

•What did they do about it? (invited friends to a celebration; threw a party)

Wrap UpPoint out that we sometimes get the impression that following Christ is boring and no fun, but it looks like Jesus would have disagreed. Ask students if they think it is okay for Christian to have a party. Obviously, there are things that some people include in “partying” that would not be in line with a Christian lifestyle (drunkenness, sexual behavior, etc.), but having fun is absolutely allowed and encouraged.

Conclude with these questions.

•What is the problem that we have all faced before we knew Jesus? (sin, death, darkness)

•What do we have to be excited about now? (salvation, new life, joy, peace)

•Who are we inviting to join us in that party?

TOBYMAC

ThemeForgiveness

ObjectiveWe should never refuse to offer for-giveness or ask for forgiveness. We have all committed acts for which we have needed forgiveness. We have all been wronged and have had for-giveness asked of us. Just as Jesus offered unwarranted forgiveness, so should we. Since Jesus made a way for forgiveness, we should ask.

Warm UpGet your group together and generate some discussion around the topic of forgiveness. Ask:

•Have you ever hurt someone and needed to ask for forgiveness?

•How did you feel when that person told you it was okay?

•Have you ever refused to offer for-giveness?

•Why?

The VideoSay, “In this song, someone is feel-ing extreme guilt over his actions. It is affecting his whole person. What he finds is that forgiveness brings great joy and peace.” Play the video.

Bible StudyRomans 3:23 tells us that “all have sinned.” 1 John 1:9 tells us that God “is faithful and just to forgive…” This is great news! No one can claim to be without sin. However, we do not have to live with the guilt. Too many times we do just that. Maybe we have broken a family rule, or committed a sexual sin, or cheated on a test. Bot-tom line, we feel guilty. However, that guilt is good. It tells us that we need to do something about our sin.

Life would be nothing but despair if we could not get rid of the guilt of doing wrong. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sin. We do not have to beat ourselves up over past sin, as the song suggests. We can turn to Jesus and accept His finished work on the cross.

When we let go of past sin and guilt and turn it over to Jesus, what sweet joy and peace we feel. When we free someone from the wrong that they have committed against us, what sweet joy and peace we have offered and feel as well. When we live life with a forgiving heart, we live life with the heart of Jesus.

Wrap UpNo one has to live with the guilt of doing something wrong. Jesus has provided a way out. We all need to look to Him for forgiveness so that we may lead joyful lives. We need to look to Him for strength so that we can find the grace to forgive others.

ThemeAdoption

ObjectiveStudents will understand that God uses adoption to allow parentless children to experience a loving family. God also uses adoption to graft us into His family.

Warm UpCentipede Tag – Choose three students to be IT and chase the remaining students within certain boundaries. If they tag another player who has not yet been tagged, that tagged player holds onto the waist of the tagger and together they go chasing after other students who have yet to be tagged. Each player who is tagged joins the group that tagged him or her by holding onto the waist of the student at the end of the line. When all players are tagged, the winning team is the one with the most players.

TransitionExplain that things sometimes happen out of our control and good people are left as the victims. Children become orphans because their parents were killed, their parents abandoned them, or the parents were incarcerated. Inno-cent children are left without a family to guide them and provide for them.

The VideoShare with your students the album project from an organization called Project Zero entitled Grafted. Project Zero’s mission is to match parentless children throughout the world with as many caring families as possible. P.O.D.’s Jason Truby produced the album – his song called “A Chance at Life.” They used this song to cre-ate a video that displays one young girl’s emotions concerning her own adoption. Watch the video and try to pick up on some of the struggles and blessings associated with adoption.

TransitionDiscuss:

•What messages did you hear in the song?

•What did you see in the video that was related to the “adoption” theme?

•Do you know anyone who has been adopted? (Maybe it’s YOU!)

•What concepts associated with adoption come to mind?

•Do you feel adoption is a positive thing or a negative thing? Why?

•Do you know how we are included into God’s family when we choose to follow Christ? (Hint: It has to do with adoption!)

Bible StudyIf your group is large, have them split into three groups and give each group one of the following Bible verses. If your group is small, work through the following verses together as a group. Have students look up the verses and relay back to the entire group what the verses are directing us to do.

•James 1:27 (Take care of the widows and orphans)

•Ephesians 1:5 (God is happy to accept us into His family as adopted children)

•Romans 8:23 (We now live in this fallen world, but our adoption into God’s Kingdom will take place soon)

Ask, “What do we now know the Bible says about adoption?” After they are done answering, go over the follow-ing, if they haven’t already considered these answers.

•God directs us to look after orphans.

•God uses adoption to include us in His family.

•We must be patient, because soon our new place in God’s family will happen.

Wrap UpHave students brainstorm ideas to help the adoption community around your church. Ask students what might be some possible ways to reach out to adoption agencies and Christian crisis pregnancy centers in your area to offer help. Have stu-dents close by praying for those who have yet to be adopted into loving families and into God’s family. Have students also thank God for choos-ing to include them into His family.

THE CITY HARMONIC

ThemeGod’s Glory

ObjectiveStudents will think about how they can take what they experience on the “mountaintop” down into the “valley.”

Warm UpPlay the song “Mountaintop” for your students, preferably without them being able to see the video. Have your students divide into teams and produce a 60-second video to the chorus of “Mountaintop.” (Most of your students will have this capability on their phones. If you have a shortage of cell phones, use your cell phone or a tablet to video each group.) You may need to upload the song into a laptop or mp3 player to allow your students to access the song for their video production. If there are two cell phones in each group, the music could be accessed on one while the other serves as the video recorder. Give prizes for the best and worst videos.

The Video“Mountaintop” incorporates videos sent to them by fans and artists from all around the world, including clips from Michael Tait (of Newsboys / DC Talk), Aaron Gillespie (Underoath / The Almost), AJ Cheek, and Daniel Bashta. There are twelve visible TV monitors throughout the video. As your students watch the video, have them pay attention to the TV monitors and fill in the blanks on their Student Guides.

•What is written on the bass drum at the end of the video? (“He is here”)

•What do you think City Harmonic means when they say that Jesus saved us from the valley?

•What does he feel in his bones?

Bible StudySeeing the glory of God should affect us. Read Exodus 24:15. Discuss:

•Why do you think that God often uses the mountaintop to manifest and symbolize His presence and glory?

•Do you know what happened to Moses when he was on the moun-taintop? Check out Exodus 34:29.

Jesus took three disciples to the mountain and they had a similar experience. Read Luke 9:28. Discuss:

•Why do you think Peter wanted to stay on the mountaintop?

•Why did they need to go back down to the valley?

•According to the song, what do you take with you into the valley after you have been to the mountaintop?

•According to the song, what are we? Check out 1 Corinthians 3:16.

One of the ways we can take the glory of God to the valley is to be salt and light. Read Matthew 5:13-16. Discuss:

•What is salt good for? Do you notice when food has no salt?

•How can you make sure you don’t lose your flavor?

•How can you be a “city on a hill” and live in the “valley” at the same time?

•What is the point of having someone see your good deeds?

Wrap Up•When was the last time you went to

the “mountaintop”?

•Where is the best place for you to experience the glory of God?

•Do you think of yourself as the temple of God?

•How are you going to be salt this week?

•How are you going to be a city on a hill this week?

LECRAE

ThemeEvangelism

ObjectiveStudents will explore stories of grace – including their own – and how those stories have motivated others and motivates them to share Christ with others.

Warm UpLifegiver – Enlist one student before the session to be the life-giver and give him or her a stack of face cards (Ace, King, Queen, Jack & Joker). As you introduce the game, give each student five playing cards but no face cards. Tell them that they will have three minutes to trade cards with other students (one card for one card) to try to find the “life-giver” (the person with the face cards). Instruct them that once they receive a face card, they are to keep it and not trade it away. There is only one “life-giver.” Anyone who does not have a face card at the end of the game is dead, but if you have a face card you are alive because you had an encounter with the “life-giver.” (Note: make it a point not to say whether or not they can talk to each other during the game.)

TransitionDebrief the game by finding out who is alive and who is dead. Discuss how they came to have a “life-card.” Did anyone tell a friend where they got one? If so, why? In the song you are about to hear, Lecrae talks about how an encounter with the real “life-giver” changed his life and what that causes him to want to do.

The VideoHand out the Student Guides. Instruct students to listen closely for Lecrae’s testimony and his response to God’s work in his life. Direct them to the basic outline on the student worksheet.

•What his life was like before his encounter with Christ. (Slave to himself, drugs, cursed God, lies, cheating, lust, greed, dead, deep in sin, low down and dirty)

•What Christ did for him. (Brand new, cleaned up my soul, set free, gave new life, clear view, changed/ain’t the same, new name, adopted me, kept rockin’ me)

•What did he say he did to deserve all of this from God? (Nothing)

•What does Lecrae say he wants to do before God beams him up? (“Tell the truth, let the whole world know that I’ve seen Your love and it’s everlasting”)

TransitionLecrae’s testimony is a powerful story of grace. We find in Scripture this same motivation for “turning the world upside-down.” As we dig through these passages, challenge students to be thinking about their own story of grace.

Bible StudyHave students read 1 Timothy 1:12-16. Then, have them discuss what similari-ties and differences they see between Paul’s and Lecrae’s stories.

Have a volunteer read 1 John 5:10-12 aloud while the other students follow along. Ask, “What is the message that we get to tell people?” (God has given us eternal life in His Son.)

Wrap UpHave each student write a sentence or two describing his or her own story of grace in the My Story section of the Student Guide. Guide them to write two or three names of people on part four of their story.

THE REND COLLECTIVE

ThemeThe Church

ObjectiveStudents will be encouraged to raise up as the Church and seek the con-tinual advance of the Kingdom of God in their lives.

Warm UpHand out the Student Guides. In small groups of 2 or 3 (or individually) chal-lenge the students to write down in one minute as many Christian denomi-nations as they can think of. Next, check to see who won the challenge (check for validity – such as made up names like “Baptecostal” (Baptist + Pentecostal), you get the idea.) Once you have determined a winner ask the students what they know about these different denominations of Christianity. Challenge the students’ understand-ing of who makes up the Church. Some students might be shocked to find out that Baptists, Method-ists, Pentecostals, and many other denominations make up the Church. Ask your students if they know what the word “church” means? The Greek word for church is ekklesia. It comes from two words: ek meaning “out” and kaleo meaning to “call.” The Church is made of those who are “called out.” In classical Greek, ekklesia meant “an

assembly of citizens summoned by the crier, the legislative assembly.” Fol-low up this thought by explaining how the United States of America is made up of 50 unique states, each with their own differences and opinions – but we are united as one Nation. The same is true with the Church. We have our differences and opinions but we are united as one in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

TransitionAsk your students, “What is the pur-pose of the church?” (To be Jesus to everyone.) The church is referred to as the body of Christ, and therefore we must be striving to live our lives like Jesus would. Ask, What do you think the Kingdom of God is?” It is the reign-ing presence of Christ in the world.

The VideoShow the “Build Your Kingdome Here” video by The Rend Collective.

TransitionAsk, “As you listened to the words of this song, were you drawn to a certain passage of Scripture? Did it remind you of the Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13?” Try read-ing the lyrics or listening to the song again as if it was a prayer.

Bible StudySay, “Let’s take a look at a powerful prayer that Jesus taught us in Mat-thew 6:9-13. No doubt many of you are familiar with this prayer, but have you ever taken the time to consider exactly what it means? When Jesus taught something, you better believe it was important! Take some time and talk about what Jesus was teaching us in this prayer –what do you think it means?”

Say, “Let’s look at what Jesus meant when He said, ‘Your Kingdom Come.’ We have already said that the King-dom of God is the reigning presence of Christ in the world. As Christians, we make up the Church and our mission is to pray and work for the constant advance of God’s Kingdom on earth. That means the reign of Christ should be in the hearts and lives of believers, and be the reigning presence of Christ in the church. By doing this we reflect the love of God, obey His laws, do good for all people, and proclaim the gospel. You see, when the Kingdom of God is present it is an unstoppable force. We should constantly seek the Kingdom first. The Kingdom of God advances when the Church lives out the message and ministry of Jesus Christ.”

Wrap UpSay, “So what does this mean for us as the Church? It means that we need to be less focused on being the most popular church in town – instead we need to make sure we are focused on sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. What are some things this church can do to see the Kingdom of God advance in your community?”

“What does this mean for you as a person? It means that you and I need to be living our lives for the glory of God in everything that we say and do. We need to be in constant prayer that God would use our lives for His glory. Make your life count by striving to be more and more like Jesus to everyone you come in contact with. When you and I do that we’ll see the Kingdom of God come – and it will be awesome! Pray that God would use your life for the advancement of His Kingdom!”

FLAME

ThemeDifficulties; Comfort In

ObjectiveStudents will be encouraged to give their trials and hardships to Jesus and learn that the trials and hardships in this world will pass.

Warm UpCase Study – Read this to your group: Brad had been hurt and he is holding on to pain. He knows he should let it go but he can’t. You see, Brad is a stu-dent who doesn’t fit in with the crowd. He is socially awkward around other people and gets made fun of by his peers. And to top it all off he just can’t seem to catch a break. His parents recently divorced and he is failing his classes in school. His girlfriend of one week just dumped him for no reason and his dog ran away from home. Brad comes to your youth service for the first time and asks you for advice.

Discuss:

•What would you say to him?

•How would you encourage him?

•Have you ever felt that you had a burden that was too heavy to carry?

•What did you do?

TransitionLike Brad, you may be facing a hard time right now – but you need to know that your troubles will not last forever and that there is hope.

The VideoIn the video, Flame and DecembeRa-dio sing about letting go. Pay attention to what is happening to the guy in the video and be ready for some discus-sion after.

Discussion•What do you think is pouring down

on the guy in the video?

•What do you think it represents?

•What did the different colors at the end of the video represent?

TransitionEach of us will experience difficulty. When we hold on to negative thoughts and feelings we will not experience the true happiness that God desires for us. However, when we let go and give all the negative things to God, then we will experience His joy and peace.

Bible StudyHave a student read Psalm 119:76-77. Discuss: “According to this passage, what can we find comfort in?” (God’s unfailing love.)

Have a student read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Discuss:

•According to this passage, who com-forts us in all our troubles? (God)

•After we receive comfort from God, what are we to then do? (Comfort others.)

•What are some ways we can com-fort others? (Here are a few ideas: Listen to them. Pray with them. Encourage them from the Bible and share how God has helped you in a similar situation.)

Have a student read Revelation 21:1-4. Discuss:

•According to this passage of scrip-ture, in what way will God’s relation-ship with His people be different in the new earth? (He will be with his people in person.)

•What do you think the phrase that says that God “will wipe every tear from their eyes” refers to? (In the New Heaven and New Earth there will be no more sorrow, sickness, pain or death because God will make everything new.)

Wrap UpWhat are you holding on to and need to let go? What is the place you can turn to according to the video? The place is in the person of Jesus Christ. Close with a prayer asking Jesus to help your students with the burdens they are carrying.

MERCYME

ThemeHealing

ObjectiveStudents will learn that God fully understands their hurts and can com-pletely heal them.

Warm UpBefore students begin to arrive, place a large sheet of butcher paper or several large sheets of poster board and markers in the room. As students enter the room, have music playing and ask them to write any and all WHY questions they would like to ask God. The questions can be silly or serious. Have a few written out to help get them started.

TransitionAfter the students have had enough time to write all their questions, take some time to read them aloud to the group. Begin by reading the silly ones and then move into the more serious questions. Say something like, “In this session we are not going to try to answer these questions, but I want to help give you some practical advice for when you find yourself asking them.”

The VideoHand out the Student Guides and say,

“As we play this video, I want you to fill in the blanks of the chorus.” Play the video. The answers are: alive, part, died, heart, breathe, life, arms open wide, hurt, Healer, collide.

TransitionSay something like, “As we break into small groups, I want to ask you to do me a huge favor. This lesson is not an easy one, and some of you have very real hurts in your life. Your small group needs to be a safe place. So there is no giggling or poking fun at anyone’s answers. Tonight will be your chance to love each other in a very real and meaningful way.”

Bible StudyAsk for volunteers to share their name and to show (as long as it is appropri-ate) their best scar allowing them to tell the story of how they got it. Then say, “Those were some pretty cool stories. What did those stories all have in common?” (The scars all came from pain) Discuss:

•Do those scars still hurt? Why?

•Besides physical, what are some other kinds of pain you and I experi-ence?

•What are some examples of emotion-

al pain you have experienced? (Be prepared to share a personal story.)

•Do you have scars from emotional pain? Do those “scars” still hurt?

•As you listened to the song and wrote words like alive, died, heart, life, hurt, and Healer, what thoughts were running through your mind?

The Bible is not silent on this issue; take a few minutes to match the verse with the reference (1. C, 2. F, 3. D, 4. E, 5. A, 6. B) Discuss:

•How does it feel knowing that God wants to heal your hurts?

•How does it feel knowing he CAN heal your hurts?

•What should we do when life hurts, and we find ourselves asking the WHY questions?

Know that God has not abandoned you. (Psalm 73:21-23; Matthew 28:20) I know sometimes it may not feel like it, but God is ALWAYS THERE! So when we find ourselves hurting and asking the WHY questions, He is there. When we are angry or crying or completely broken, He is there. Allow Him to heal you.

Trust that He has a plan for you. (Prov-erbs 3:5-6)

•What do you think “Trust in the Lord with all your heart” means?

•What are some ways we “lean on our own understanding”?

•How do we trust in Him in the midst of pain?

Help those with their pain. (2 Corin-thians 1:3-4) There are times when you need someone to help you through difficult times, and there are times when you will be the one help-ing someone else. This group is here for you; I’m here for you; we are all here for each other.

Wrap UpWe have talked about pain and God’s amazing love that brings healing. But, the truth is that you may still be really hurting. You still have questions. You may still be angry or bitter. Before we leave, we are going to play the song again. While it plays, anyone and everyone who needs their hurts to collide with the Healer should come forward. We will pray for you to start the process of God healing your life.

BRINSON

ThemeSalvation; The Gospel

ObjectiveStudents will learn what following Jesus means and will decide whether they will follow Him or not.

Warm UpObtain some colored glasses. (Some kinds of 3D glasses would work well for this). Have a volunteer come up front with you, and ask him or her to look out at the audience and describe some of what he or she sees. Then have him or her put the colored glasses on, and describe again some of what he or she sees, noting the difference between how things look now and how they looked before the glasses were on.

TransitionAsk the group to think about how differ-ent things would look if they had those colored glasses permanently attached and worn for the rest of their life.

The VideoInstruct them to watch closely the opening scene of the video, noting what item the kids find, and what they do with it. Also, tell them that this video

has unusual visual effects. Ask them to watch closely to what the kids do at the end of the video. Play the video.

TransitionAsk about what the kids found in the video. (An old toy called a View-Master, see wikipedia.org for details.) Explain that a View-Master would show the viewer a series of 3D pictures that you could flip through. Tell them that there are many kinds of items that change the way you see things. Mention to them some examples, such as kalei-doscopes, colored glasses, binoculars, night vision goggles, and 3D glasses. In the video, the kids looked into the toy and saw an unusual music video.

Bible StudyHave a volunteer read 1 Kings 18:20-24 aloud. Israel was being asked to choose between local pagan gods and the Lord God who had brought them to this Promised Land years earlier. Explain the background of Israel’s continued turning away from God and returning to Him. King Ahab was one of the kings who turned the people away from God. Elijah continued to speak for God; he reminded Ahab and the nation that there was only one true God and they had turned their back on Him. Point out 1 Kings 18:21. A showdown was about to go down on Mount Carmel, and only one deity would come out the winner.

Have another volunteer read 1 Kings 18:29 and summarize whether Baal turned out to be the real god. Have that volunteer read 1 Kings 18:37-39 and summarize whether God was the true god or not. Ask the volunteer to re-read 1 Kings 18:39 and summarize how the people of Israel responded to what God did.

Remind the group that they, too, should ask themselves what god they want to worship. They, like the kids in the video, and like the people of Israel, are looking at the story of the Lord God. They, too, have a choice to make about whom they will worship.

Have a volunteer read Matthew 6:24. Point out that Jesus said these words. Ask the group to think about whether people today are worshipping money, which in many ways is like the ancient nation of Israel turning away to wor-ship a local pagan god named Baal.

Have that volunteer read Luke 18:18-23. Jesus noticed a major false god in this person’s life. Jesus showed the ruler a major flaw in his thinking. Ask the volunteer to re-read Luke 18:23 and to summarize how the ruler responded to Jesus’ challenge.

Ask students to consider how bringing Jesus into their life requires them to eliminate another ‘god’ that has been running their life. Read John 3:16. Ask

students whether their love for things will rule their lives or whether they will choose to love and worship Jesus. Show them that the artist says in many ways during the music video that he turned away from his old ways of sin and love for the world and turned to Jesus and love for only Him.

Wrap UpRemind the students what the kids in the music video did to the View-Master. Ask them whether the response of the kids was more like the response of ancient Israel at Mount Carmel or more like the response of the young man with Jesus. (The kids leave the toy lying on the floor much like the ruler sorrowfully left Jesus.) Remind them that they, too, can each put on a pair of Jesus glasses that will change the way they look at the entire world around them if they will only choose to do so.

Offer students a chance to make a decision about how they will respond to God’s good news in Jesus Christ. Pray for them and do something appropriate for your group that allows them to believe in Him, turn from their sinful ways, and turn to God’s forgiveness and direction. Cel-ebrate any who decide to take the leap, showing to them how excited God is about their decision.

DESPERATION BAND

ThemeGod’s Character

ObjectiveStudents will discover (or re-discover) the characteristics of God. Through this encounter they will be inspired to find their hope and life in all He offers.

Warm Up Encourage students to find a space in the room where they can be by themselves. Give them five minutes to complete the What I Like (And Don’t Like) About Me exercise.

Depending on the trust relationships within your group you may or may not want to have group members share their lists with one another. If yours is a close group, sharing should go easily. If not, have a few volunteers share what they liked about themselves. After everyone has had an opportunity to disclose his or her list (in part or whole), discuss:

•Why is admitting characteristics we actually like about ourselves difficult?

•Why is the list of things we don’t like about ourselves often longer?

•What seems to be one of the top five characteristics we would all want to have?

TransitionSay, “Not one of us wants bad or negative character traits in our lives, but because of sin we often choose to disobey God and spoil the Godly character created within us. God’s character is perfect. When we focus on Him, we become more like Him. Today we will discover, and perhaps re-discover, the character traits of our ‘wonderful’ God. Hopefully you will be more inspired find your hope and life in all He offers.”

The VideoIntroduce the video; let the group know that Desperation Band is a group of guys who lead worship in their Colo-rado Springs home church. Show the video as your group works through the Good Stuff exercise.

TransitionGive your group time to share the “good stuff” they recognized and then work through these questions as a way of further understanding the video:

•How could you tie the video in with the words of the song?

•What are the parts of this song that give us the most hope?

•How much good news does it take for us to have hope?

•What is the significance of the words, “every fear must bow down”?

Explain that this song directs us to our incomparable God. There are people who inspire us through their character and actions, but they are not perfect. Only God is complete in all He is, was, and will be.

Bible Study Read through Psalm 86:1-13 as a group. One way to do this would be going around the circle and having each person read a verse. After person #1 has read verse 1, person #2 may read verse 2 and so on until all thirteen verses are complete. Next, encour-age your youth to complete the What I Need/Who He Is section in smaller groups of 2-3 people. When time is up, invite them to come back together. Have your youth share their responses and then follow with these questions:

•What is the relationship of my “real” needs and God’s character? (What I really need in life should be the character traits I find in Him, i.e. love, mercy, justice, etc.)

•Why was it important in those days and in these days to make it clear no other “gods” can compare to God?

•What did the psalmist mean by, “Give me an undivided heart?”

Wrap-UpSay something like, “God is offering us everything we need to define and build our character in Him. It is easy to know all the wonderful things about God, but it is a challenge to live them day after day. How can we do this?”

Ask your group to go around the circle and describe one character trait of God that they find easier to live and one they find the challenging. After everyone has spoken, pray for each person’s challenge. Commit to asking them about it the next week or when you see them next.

CAPITAL KINGS

ThemeTransformation

ObjectiveStudents will discover how many people in the Bible could have sung this song and how it could be their song too.

Warm UpMad Libs Meet Dance Dance Revolution – If you have access to a video projector, big screen, DVD player, or TV – or even a large computer screen – this could be a great group game or a one-to one-competition. This works a little like Mad Libs, but in this case you will be asking for dance moves instead of adjectives and nouns. Post a list of the key words in the video and then ask for dance moves to match a word. Kids who suggest the dance move must show the audience how the dance is done. Once you get all the key words and dances matched, choose a couple students to compete to see if they can pull off the dances when the words come up. Here are some of the key words in the video but feel free to add more: Alive, Feel, Gave, Away, Wanted, Living, Inside, Haze, Revived, Along.

TransitionHand out the Student Guides and say, “Music and dancing makes us feel alive, but what about those times when we don’t feel alive? Think for a bit how you would complete the three sentences, and then write your answers. Now, here are three people from the Bible who went from being left for dead to fully alive.

Bible StudyA Social Death – “I Feel My Most Socially Dead When…” Have you ever been bullied or kept from sitting at a certain lunch table just because of who you were? The lepers in Jesus’ time had to live apart from their families and even had to announce, yell out, “Unclean!” so others would not accidentally touch them. Read Luke 17:11-17. These lepers were transformed and restored to their families and friends. God is asking us, “What do you want me to do for you?” If God changes our lives, we may not always be socially welcome, but He will provide the friends you need so you don’t have to try to break into a crowd that does not want you in the first place. Just remember in the end to be thankful.

An Emotional Death – “I Feel Most Emotionally Dead or Disconnected When…” King David had similar problems. There was a time in his life where he was literally on the run from death, and he felt alone and unwanted. Have you ever felt that way? Read Psalm 142:1-4. Maybe you are happy on the outside, but emotionally you feel as if no one cares. Or maybe you are angry or harbor resentment toward someone. Both of these situations create an emotional disconnect. The peace, love, and forgiveness that God offers and that we can offer each other makes us feel truly alive.

A Spiritual Death – “I Feel Most Dead Towards God When…” Read Matthew 23:27. Jesus had a talk with some Pharisees, one of the influential religious orders at the time. Jesus was very harsh with them because they acted fine on the outside but on the inside their souls were dead. He called them hypocrites. We can’t fake God out. He sees our insides and knows whether we are alive or dead to Him, even if our outside looks fine. The good news is that Jesus is life; He is living, and He is prepared to transform our dead man’s bones into an army for God. (Ezekiel 37:1-11)

Wrap UpEncourage the kids to pray through some of these points. Create three “Life Areas” (Social, Emotional, and Spiritual) at the front of your room. Ask students who sense that they are feeling “death” in one of these “life areas” to go to that area and pray. Have some adults or students ready to pray with those who respond. If you do not want to end on a somber note, play the Capital Kings video again and rejoice that they are alive, dance moves and all!

RHETT WALKER BAND

Theme Faith; Within Trials

ObjectiveStudents will learn to not let their circumstances make them forget God’s faithfulness.

Warm UpWalking On Eggshells – Designate an area outside as a “minefield” of eggs. Before starting, explain that this is a timed event and if anyone steps on an egg it will add five minutes to the total time. One person from each team (keep in mind, the more teams, the more eggs you will need) will be blindfolded and placed at the beginning of the “minefield.” Team members will try to guide him/her to the other side of the field without stepping on any eggs. The catch is this: other students will try to be so loud that the blindfolded person will not be able to hear his/her team-mates. Replace and add new eggs as needed.

TransitionAsk the blindfolded team members why continuing through the field was so difficult. If they stepped on an egg, were they discouraged to continue? What if more than one egg was stepped on?

The VideoTell the students that the video by Rhett Walker Band will help them gain a perspective on keeping a positive outlook even through trials. Hand out the Student Guides and ask the students to fill out the Real Talk section of the Student Guide as the video plays.

TransitionHave the students share some of the lyrics that really stood out to them. What is the main point of this song? (Rhett tells viewers in the beginning of the video that the song is about life and being overwhelmed by the pressure of the world and how we may feel like the “mountains” of life are just too big to get over.)

Bible StudyHave students look up the following verses and fill in the blanks.

Psalm 55:22 – Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

John 16:33 – “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Psalm 31:24 – All you who put your hope in the Lord, be strong and brave.

Matthew 11:28 – Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Romans 8:28 – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Discuss what these verses are say-ing. Notice how the verses never say that everything will be perfect; they merely say that the Lord can give each of us rest if we trust in Him and hand our worries over to Him. Rhett illustrated the old saying, “If God brings us to it, He’ll get you through it.” We all have different trials that bring stress to our lives, but we need to remember that God works for good in ALL things; not a few things, not some things, but ALL things.

Wrap UpHave the students answer and dis-cuss the questions under the It’s Gonna be Alright section of the Stu-dent Guide. End with a prayer for the lifting up and handing over of heavy burdens, that students find rest in the Lord, and that we realize that the Lord only wants the best for us. After closing, play the video again while students talk and disperse.

ThemeHealing

ObjectiveStudents will understand better the depth of God’s healing.

Warm UpIf, Then, Fill In – Hand out Student Guides and pens. Either assign teams a statement or two to ponder and com-plete, or talk through each statement as a group. The goal is to stir creativity, solve issues ranging from the trivial to the important, and get students thinking about their concepts of healing. Encour-age discussion about the students’ choices for the blanks.

TransitionExplain that healing is an often-mis-understood subject. Ask, “What do you think of when you hear the word

‘healing’?” Discuss. “Why do some people get physically healed while others do not?”

The VideoThe Irish worship band Bluetree’s song called “Jesus Healer” was inspired by a sermon series at their church in Bel-fast—and founding member/songwrit-er Aaron Loyd’s daughter’s battle with cystic fibrosis. Encourage students to

utilize the blank space on the Student Guide to jot down lyrics that grab their attention. Play the video.

TransitionAsk, “What lyrics really stand out to you?” Then ask, “What do you think is the meaning of this song?” Finally ask, “Do you believe healing is much bigger than just the physical?” Challenge students to explain their responses. Then either divide into the same groups your students were in for the Warm Up, or work through the Bible study section together.

Bible StudyHave students read their passage, discuss the questions, and then share their responses with the rest of the group. Lyrical phrases from the song are in italics to begin each section. His body broken, broken for the world – Mark 6:47-51

•Describe the setting. (lake, late night, small boat, big storm)

•How did Jesus react to the disciples’ imminent danger? (walked—on water—into the danger zone!)

•Why would He intend to go on past their boat? (Maybe to see whether His pres-ence in the storm calmed them.)

•Would you be calmed by Jesus being in the storm with you?

•What did Jesus tell them since they

continued to freak out even in His presence? (Don’t be afraid; take courage because He’s there.)

Jesus, Jesus, Healer, Be lifted up – Mark 6:53-56

•Describe how the people acted when they recognized Jesus. (excited, relieved, desiring healing)

•How might seeing Jesus heal all kinds of diseases affect you? Explain.

•Who was healed? (all who touched Him, even the fringe of his robe!)

•What kind of response would Jesus get today if He walked into town? Would anyone notice?

•How might witnessing Jesus heal someone else change a person’s life? (belief, trust)

His body broken, broken for the world – Romans 5:3-5

•What are some problems that teen-agers face? (stress, relationship issues, temptation)

•How can these troubles make a person stronger? (perspective, endur-ance, better prepared next time)

•What are some huge challenges teens might face? (rejection, physical ailments, money problems)

•How might God bring healing to problems and challenges? (provide peace, be with you in the storm)

•How can a person experience God’s love? (know Him, talk to Him, build a relationship)

The cross defeated all our sickness and pain, we’re ransomed by the King

– Romans 5:6-11

•What is the most helpless you’ve ever felt?

•Would you give up your life so some-one else could live? Even your worst enemy? Explain.

•Were there any perfect people when Christ went to the cross? Explain.

•How does a person make friends with God? (talk to Him, get to know Him)

Wrap UpExplain that healing comes through knowing Jesus personally. Healing isn’t always physical. Every problem will eventually be healed when we go from this world into Heaven. Jesus never said He’d remove all our prob-lems, but He did say that He’d go through them with us. We’re foolish to think that we won’t face pain and trou-bles since even Jesus had to endure pain – even unto death on the cross.

Close with this prayer: “Dear Lord, remind me that You are with me in the storms of life. Help me accept that when earthly problems are not healed in this life, that you permanently heal them in eternity. Thank You for this amazing gift. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

FINDING FAVOUR

ThemePriorities

ObjectiveStudents will consider whether they spend their time on important things or unimportant things.

Warm UpUsing the circle on the Student Guide, have students divvy it up into sec-tions indicating how they spend their time each day (1 hour is 1/24). For example: 1/3 sleeping, 1/24 studying, 1/3 in school, etc. This shouldn’t be an “exact science” but just a way to con-sider the way that we spend our time. The directions on the Student Guide explain how to color in the pie chart when the student has finished.

TransitionAsk:

•What is the main color on your chart?

•If you could, how would you change the chart?

Say, “Compare your pie chart with someone next to you. Discuss with each other about how your charts dif-fer as well as how they are similar.”

The VideoSay, “I imagine that your pie chart would look really different in about 20 years, and very different in another 20 years from that! Think about how things might be very different for you in old age than they are now. Watch this video by Finding Favour and note how the old man is reflecting on his life. Consider how you might feel looking back upon your daily activities when you are older.” Show the video.

TransitionDiscuss:

•What stood out to you about the video?

•What was the most meaningful of the old man’s reflections?

•Are there any things in your life that you would do differently if you had the chance to do them over?

•What was the old man concerned with for most of his life?

•Now at the end of life, what is the old man concerned with?”

Bible StudyRead Matthew 6:19-21. Discuss:

•How does Matthew suggest we store up treasures on earth?

•What kinds of treasures are stored in heaven?

•Look at your pie chart. Where might you be storing up your treasure?

•Are any “heavenly treasure stores” missing from your pie chart?

•How might you find time for the things that are most important?”

Wrap UpSay, “Jesus taught us to spend our time storing up treasure in heaven. Sometimes we have to eliminate the things we are doing to ‘store up trea-sure on earth’ to make more time and space to spend our time more wisely. Using the two circles on the bottom of your Student Guide, list the things you can do to store up treasure in heaven in the circle on the left, and list the things you could give up or the things that waste your time in the circle on the right.”

Pray, “God of all time, help us to notice when we are too consumed with the wrong kind of treasure. Help us remember how quickly life slips on by, and help us to then spend our time on meaningful and life-giving activities. In the name of Jesus, Amen.”

Directions: Use the circle below to show how you spend your time (divvy it up like a pie chart):

With crayons, color-code the sections by outlining them with the following colors (some sections may have more than one color):

•Blue: activities you choose to do or things you like to do

•Red: activities other people make you do

•Orange: Things you would rather not do

•Green: Important things/activities vital to life

•Black: Activities you may spend too much time doing or that are not helpful to your life or goals

•Gold: Things that draw you closer to God

Finish this sentence: When I look back at the end of my life, I want to be able to say, “ ____________________________________________________________________

DARE 2 SHARE

ThemeEvangelism

Objective Students will explore the message of the GOSPEL using six key words: God, Our, Sins, Paying, Everyone, Life.

Warm UpAsk:

•Everyone loves a great story, right? In fact, most of you probably have a favorite movie that tells a story you are really drawn to. What’s your favorite movie or book?

•Why is it your favorite?

TransitionExplain: We’re all drawn to great sto-ries, but there’s one grand, sweeping story that rises above the rest. It’s a true story and it addresses the whole history of humankind. It’s the story told in the pages of the Bible. And that big picture view of the Bible—think of a Google Maps satel-lite image taken from 20,000 feet up—is what we’re going to be talking about today. We’ll be looking at the essence of the gospel message as it spans Genesis to Revelation. Let’s begin by watching a video clip that provides the starting point for our simple summary of the gospel.

The VideoShow Dare 2 Share’s video “Life in 6 Words: The GOSPEL” featuring Jason Petty (“Propaganda”).

Transition•What did you think? Give me a few

one-sentence reactions to the video you just watched.

•Did you catch Prop’s line in the video where he calls the gospel “the greatest story ever told, that’s hardly ever told”? Had you ever heard the gospel referred to as “the greatest story ever told”? Do you think that’s a fair description? Why or why not?

Bible Study Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. Discuss:

•What is this verse saying about what’s of first importance?

•If the gospel is so important, why don’t we talk about it more with others?

•From the beginning to the end, God is at the center of the human story. But He wants this story to be per-sonal to us as individuals. Is God personal to you?

•What do you think will happen when God is personal to you?

•Are you living as if you really believe the gospel is “the greatest story ever told”? Why or why not?

Life in 6 Words:The GOSPEL TrainingExplain: Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the prospect of sharing the gospel because we’re not really sure we know how to explain it to someone else. So these six words in the video can help with that. On your handout you’ll see these six words laid out with a little more explana-tion. These six truths capture the core essentials that will help you clearly and effectively communicate Jesus’ message. Let’s walk through these, step by step.

Explain that these six points are not intended to be a script that’s read through, but provide an outline that provides the basic building blocks to a clear and effec-tive presentation of the gospel. They pro-vide some key points to discuss along the way in spiritual conversations with your friends. For a more detailed explanation of each point go to gospeljourney.com.

God created us to be with Him. (Genesis 1-2)

Our sin separated us from God. (Genesis 3)

Sins cannot be removed by good deeds. (Genesis 4 - Malachi 4)

Paying the price for sin, Jesus died and rose again. (Matthew - Luke)

Everyone who trusts in Him alone has eternal life. (John)

Life that’s eternal starts now and lasts forever. (Acts - Revelation)

ApplicationExplain: Let’s brainstorm some things we could do this week to start living as though Jesus’ message really is “the greatest story ever told.” (Ideas: Use music to spend time in worship; share generously with someone as a reflec-tion of God’s generosity to you; spend more time in the Word; pray more; talk to someone about Jesus, etc.)

Now, think of one friend who needs Jesus at the center of his or her story. Pray for that friend during this next week. Take a couple minutes right now to pray for them together in groups of 2-3 and brainstorm some ideas for how you could initiate sharing this great story with them in the coming week.

ClosingMaybe when you watched the “Life in 6 Words: The GOSPEL” video you heard the message of the gospel in a way you could understand for the first time ever. If that’s true for you, then I invite you to step out and put your faith in Jesus alone based on what He did for you on the cross and trust in Him as your only hope of a restored relationship with God. Like Prop said in the video,

“Everyone who trusts in Him alone has eternal life.” By simply believing you receive this free gift of life with Jesus, a life that starts now and lasts forever.

DUCK DYNASTY

ThemeSin; Struggle With

ObjectiveStudents will have a great time learn-ing how to combat sin together with the help of the Robertson family.

Why not have a “Duck Dynasty Night” with your group? Challenge students to dress up like the Robertsons – guys wear camouflage, fake beards, ban-danas, and girls don camo or dress fashionably like the Robertson ladies. This would even work great as a spe-cial event in conjunction with other outdoors or retreat activities.

Warm UpWords Or Actions? – Get five volun-teers. Tell the entire group that these five students will leave the room, and then be instructed to enter one at a time. When each student enters the room, he/she will be given a choice between two things. Send the five volunteers out now. After they have left, bring the youngest volunteer back in. Ask this student, “Words or Actions?” The student must choose one of the two without you explaining the choices. If the student chooses “Words” he/she will answer a question. If the student chooses “Actions,” he/she will have to do the action you tell them to do. Here

are five suggestions for you to utilize with the five volunteers:

•WORDS: What do you like about ducks?

ACTION: Quack and waddle like a duck.

•WORDS: Do you like beards? Why/why not?

ACTION: Imitate a duck swimming.

•WORDS: Why should a person wear camouflage?

ACTION: Do you best impression of

a duck call.

•WORDS: What do you know about Louisiana?

ACTION: Imitate a duck flying.

•WORDS: Would you shoot a duck? Why/why not?

ACTION: Ride around on an invisible

four-wheeler.

TransitionSay, “Duck Dynasty on A&E Channel has become huge hit with people of all ages. The Robertson family’s homemade duck calls have made them millions. What keeps them strongly bonded as a family is their faith-filled values. Let’s have a look at what makes them such good enter-tainment on their show and such good role models.

The Video“Where’s The Water?” – Think of a time you had a task to complete but something kept getting in the way of completing it. Briefly share your experi-ence with the group. Play the first clip. When the clip ends, ask:

•Have you ever wanted to grow a beard as long as the Duck Dynasty guys?

•How do Phil and Si feel about the beavers? How can the beaver prob-lem be likened to the sin problem in a person’s life?

“Blasted Beavers!” – Think of a very difficult time in your life when your fam-ily or friends really stepped up to help you. Briefly share your experience with the group. Then say, “Phil and Si real-ize the beavers are a formidable force to be reckoned with-- so they call in reinforcements.” Play the second clip.

Say, “Jase explains how serious the situation is and sets the stage for tak-ing action.” Ask:

•According to Si, how is a beaver like a ninja?

•What are some practical reasons to work with others on a task?

•How does fighting sin together with friends beat fighting solo?

“Judgment Day” – Briefly share about a time in your life when someone attempted to rescue you from a bad choice. Then say, “With the beavers threatening the family’s livelihood, it is time for action.” Play the third clip.

Say, “Si says, ‘We are taking no prison-ers. Judgment day is here.’” Ask:

•Do you know anyone whose ideas remind you of Si? Give us the details…

•What happens when words aren’t accompanied by actions? Explain.

•How can a person have a “take no prisoners” attitude toward sin?

“That Other Team” – Briefly share about a time in your life when it took more than one time to succeed at some-thing. Then say, “Si has some crazy ideas for eradicating the beavers. Let’s see how his first plan works.” Play the fourth clip. Then say, “Just like Willie says about the Robertsons versus the beavers, ‘Sometimes it feels like we are going up against the Harlem Glo-betrotters in our fight with sin.’” Ask:

•Would you trust Si’s ideas enough to join in? Why or why not?

•Is it easier or harder to try again after failure? Explain.

•How should a youth group react when group members stumble in the fight on sin?

DUCK DYNASTY

“Scien-tistic” – Briefly share about the outcome of a really bad idea you attempted at some point in your life. Then say, “Just when you thought Si was a little unconventional, he rolls out his second plan to destroy the beavers.” Play the fifth clip.

Say, “Brilliant or insane, Si’s second plan only succeeds at being hilarious while ending with a bang!” Ask:

•What are some bad ideas that can lead to major trouble?

•Have you ever shot someone’s bad idea down before it was too late?

•What is the hardest part about helping a friend fight sin?

“The Reckoning” – Think about a time in your life when you experienced victory in one battle, but knew the war was far from over. Briefly share your experience. Then say, “We are going to walk right up on sin sometimes in life, just like the Robertsons walk up on the beaver dam in this next scene. Play the sixth clip.

Say, “Just like Phil says, ‘one down and a hundred to go.’” Ask:

•How many shots do you think the guys fired at that beaver?

•How can Phil’s statement, “one down and a hun-dred to go” relate to a person’s struggle with sin?

•What are some practical actions a person can take to stay strong for future sin battles?

Bible Study“Well Done” – Briefly share about a life experience in which you had to take extreme measures to complete a task. Then say, “In this next clip, Phil and his friend Red join forces to deal with more beavers in a not-so-subtle kind of way.” Play the seventh clip.

Ask, “Would you have used the flamethrower, gun, or neither—and why?” Say, “Let’s draw some similarities between the Bible’s wisdom and the always entertaining antics of the Duck Dynasty family.” Cover the following points with your group.

•Sin builds a spiritual dam between you and God. Psalm 40:11-13

•Sin affects more people than just the sinner. Romans 6:13

•Take action against sin together. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

•The fight won’t be easy, but the effort will be worth it! Romans 5:3-5

•Sometimes there will be temporary failures. John 16:33

•The fight won’t be won without action. 1 Corinthians 15:58

•We need friends to hold us accountable to fight the good fight. James 5:16

Wrap Up“Like Biscuits and Jam” – Say, “There’s a great deal we have in common with the Robertsons aside from their beards and having Si in the family.” Play the eighth/final clip. Then say, “Willie said, ‘The Rob-ertson family and bad ideas go together like biscuits and jam.’ Humans and sin also go together like bis-cuits and jam.” Read this to the students:

Imagine the beavers damming up the water as representing the sins that endanger our lives. The guys’ efforts to eradicate the beavers remind us how we must take action to be vigilant against sin. Like the Robertsons, being together with friends and family who are also fighting the good fight helps us stay strong.

Ask, “What is one ‘big idea’ you can take home and apply when it comes to fighting sin?” Allow for responses before closing with prayer.

MATTHEW WEST

ThemeCompassion

ObjectiveStudents will be challenged to look at a world bigger than themselves, to turn their focus outward, to get outside their “own little worlds,” to serve others, and to make a difference.

Warm UpThe Bigger Picture – Get a large sheet of paper and draw two concentric circles. In the smaller circle write Personal Problems and in the larger one write Bigger Problems. Have your students list personal problems, i.e. things that they and/or their peers are facing. Then move to the larger circle and start listing societal/world problems. Ask your students to list things that can be done about the bigger problems. Write these solutions around the outside of the large circle. Using a different color for each category might help.

TransitionSay something like; “We’ve got some great solutions to some really big problems that could make a very real difference in the world. However, too often we don’t get to deal with the big stuff because we’re focused on our personal stuff. That’s what it means to be in ‘your own little world.’ This is not to minimize personal problems – some of them are very real – but sometimes the best way to deal with problems is to turn our focus outward, to live in God’s purpose, and to help and serve others. That’s what our video is all about.”

The VideoIn this video, Matthew West gives the story behind his song, “My Own Little World.” It expresses the idea that we need to look beyond our own little worlds, our own thoughts and problems, to have compassion for others and make a real difference. As you watch the video have your students make notes of things that strike them in the What If There’s A Bigger Picture? section of the Student Guide.

TransitionDiscuss:

•What does becoming a character in someone else’s story mean to you?

•How would staying stuck in your own little world keep that from happening?

Bible StudyIn our lesson we’re going to look at how to get from our own little worlds to the bigger picture. One of the passages Matthew West references is John 15:11-13. This is where we’ll start.

It’s hard to find the joy of the Lord when we’re stuck in our own little worlds. We’re too busy looking at all of our problems. We find joy in living out God’s purpose, loving and serving others and living sacrificially. Jesus brings this into focus in the parable of the sheep and goats.

Read John 15:11-13 and answer the Student Guide questions together. Then do the same for Matthew 25:31-46.

Wrap UpIn one of the great lines of the song is a prayer for the Father to break our hearts for what breaks His heart. Go back to the large circle from the Warm Up and ask your students which of these problems really concern them. Ask them why they think some of the problems matter more to them, as individuals, than others. Perhaps these are problems God wants them to do something about. Sometimes these problems look too huge for any one person or any one group – and sometimes they are – but “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” What’s the first step? Perhaps this could turn into a mission for your group, a way to get outside your

“own little world.” Close in prayer.

44 GOOD TIME EVENT

© 2012, interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300

By Ken McCoy with assistance fromJumpstart Ministries Chuck KleinEscondido, Californa The Campus [email protected] San Diego, California

IntroductionAdam Young (Owl City) is no stranger to members of interlínc’s Youth Leaders Only. We’ve had a special relationship with him ever since he first surfaced on the pop music scene. His music and testimony have been featured in YLO, Music Video Loop magazines, and e-zine.

Adam is an outspoken Christian and has a huge soft spot in his heart for youth leaders. He goes out of his way to do what he can to encourage, equip, and invigorate those of us who work daily with teenagers in ministry. He has done special video clips just for this event.

Now we come to the feel-good song of the summer of 2012. It’s quite a story…

When Adam co-wrote “Good Time” he had the idea that it should be a duet. His manager who is a personal friend of Carly Rae’s manager suggested her involvement. This all happened just as her song “Call Me Maybe” was hitting the pop charts. So many more special details took place with this seemingly impossible final result – “Good Time” became Owl City’s first single and Carly Rae’s follow-up single after her huge hit. This type of thing never happens in pop music, so we think “you-know-Who” might have something really cool going on here.

The video, with a cool “woodsy, outdoorsy, camping” vibe (it was filmed at the Silver Mine area of Harriman State Park in New York) is all about “good clean fun” – which is the overarching theme of this GOOD TIME Event.

Many secular teenagers have a foundational opinion that Christians aren’t allowed to have fun. In most teenagers’ minds, Christians don’t like cool music, aren’t aware of current movies, drive boring cars, and dress in out-of-style clothes. “Fun” for Christians must mean playing Yahtzee with younger siblings and popping old-style popcorn.

This event is aimed at changing that opinion.

The GOOD TIME Event is designed to draw in kids from the community and campus who do not normally attend a local church and give them a real good time, opening up relationships and opportunities to share the great news of Jesus either down the road or at the Event.

ImportanceToday’s teenagers have a built-in bias against Christianity. Really. Ask a teenager, any teenager (whether he or she participates in your youth ministry or not) to describe “church.” You’re going to hear words and phrases like,

“boring” (the all-time champion descriptor), “irrelevant” (which is the root cause of “boring”), “for old people” (another way of saying “boring” and “irrelevant”), or even “I don’t know; I’ve never been to church.”

Those anti-Christian biases are huge barriers for your outreach to secular students. That bias must be neutralized before any teenager will be willing to give the Gospel a fair hearing. This GOOD TIME Event is a primarily a “pre-

evangelism” effort, though it can be evangelistic as well, depending on your planning, the type of crowd you expect, etc.

You’re going to show a bunch of teenagers that many of their presuppositions about Christians, church, and following Jesus are off base. When you go all out and implement all of the ideas that we’ve included in this material (and others that we didn’t even think of), you will begin to break down the barriers that keep teenagers from giving the Gospel a fair hearing. You’ll provide for them a “Good Time” with no additional expectations.

They won’t know what hit them.

They will go home and think, “Whoa! THAT wasn’t what I thought it would be! Maybe those Christians aren’t as boring as I thought.”

And THAT is when you’ll know your efforts have been successful.

TimingFall is the most effective time for you to try to attract students to your ministry. For some reason, kids are WAY more willing to check different programs out in the fall than they are any other time of the year.

Add to that the influx of curious new freshmen from the upcoming Middle School class, and you KNOW that fall is the most important time to make a great impression.

AND, one last item to add to the list – the “Good Time” song and video has become the “feel good” song/video of the summer. It is on the top of the pop charts and every student in the local high school will know the song!

So, here’s what you do. You plan for this Good Time Event to occur sometime during the first few weeks of school or as soon as you can make it happen.

It might make sense to follow up this event with a three-week “Good Time” series for your mid-week meeting. You could hand out flyers about the series to the students as they leave your Good Time Event, and even send follow-up texts about the series. (We’ll cover more ideas later about following up this event.)

PromotionYour effort to spread the news about the GOOD TIME Event will be determined by the resources you have, the energy you put into it, and the creativity of your team. Since this will be your big Fall Kick-off event, you’ll want to do every-thing you can to get the word out! Here are some resources and ideas to help you promote the event:

•Use the really cool “behind the scenes” video about the making of the “Good Time” music video. It’s available on YouTube here: youtube.com/watch?v=nU5bAhwPQ9Q

<< OWL CITY Page

GOOD TIME EVENT 45

interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300

•Adam has done a short video clip encouraging young people to check out the GOOD TIME Event. Here are his basic words, “Hey guys! It’s Adam Young from Owl City. Everybody is looking for a GOOD TIME, and I know exactly where to find it! Keep your eyes peeled the GOOD TIME Event that’s coming up soon!” Download the video at interlinc-online.com/goodtime and use it the following ways to promote your event. > Email it > Text it > Show it to your youth group > Show it to your congregation > Ask to have it shown on the morning “announcements” video at your local high schools > You can surely think of even more ways to use it!

•You can get the official Good Time graphics for you to use in your promo-tional flyers, cards, temporary tattoos, banner-towed-by-an-airplane, etc. at interlinc-online.com/goodtime.

ProgramWhat follows are a bunch of ideas organized around a “typical” youth meet-ing structure. That structure is designed to move the crowd from high-energy participation to focused attention. Think of an inverted pyramid, with the width of the pyramid representing the energy level of the students. You want to start with a bang, and slowly transition through stages to where they are quiet and paying attention to what is being communicated.

Opening5-SensingWhen does your GOOD TIME Event start? When the kids walk in the room? No. When they pull into the parking lot? Bingo! We’ve included this concept in previous materials we’ve produced, but it bears repeating: think through what you want the young people to experience when they first arrive to your event.

Imagine you’re a teenager coming to this youth ministry for the first time. Drive into the parking lot; what do you see that makes you think this event is going to be great? Step out of the car; what will you hear that will reinforce that opin-ion? As you walk toward the building, what other things will your five senses pick up that will get you in the mood to have a great time?

Here are some preliminary ideas – take them, and then rework, and add to them that which will set your GOOD TIME Event apart from the other experi-ences your young people have.

See Abustlingparkinglot•Severalcampingtentsandbackpacks •A“SignInHere”banneroveracampingtable•Ahugebonfire-sized campfire with people around it roasting marshmallows •An“Outfitter/Guide”dressedasabackpacker

Smell Smoke•Marshmallowsroasting•Pine

Taste Smore’s•Softdrinks

Touch Sign-incard,pencil•“GoodTime”lanyardorwristband•Campsite games

Sign-InOne of the most valuable things you can get from this activity is a bunch of new names, addresses and phone numbers. Make your sign-in procedure as

“fun” as possible.

Cards Have plenty of Sign-In cards printed up, and give them to the “Outfitter/Guide” to hand out to students as they enter the area. Then have a separate sign-in table where the cards are turned in.

Lanyards/Wristbands Having “Good Time” lanyards or wristbands printed up can be relatively inexpensive. Tell the young people that when they turn in their card they’ll get their lanyard/wristband.

PreActivityArrange for some camp-type games to be available for students to play while final preparations are being made inside. You can go simple with activities such as Cornhole and Horseshoes, or you can get elaborate with ropes courses and such. The last thing you want is for kids to show up and then mill around waiting for something to happen!

High-Energy ParticipationGet the group outside for some active and fun games. Be sure to have a talented videographer on hand to capture the kids while they’re playing. You’ll use that video once you get back inside.

“Inflated” ActivitiesThere are many activities and games available for you to rent that are “inflated” with air compressors or fans. Anything from “American Gladiator”-type obsta-cle courses, to “Human Flypaper” velcro walls, to 6-foot-diameter balls, to

“Sumo Wrestlers” suits can be used with large crowds. Such contraptions will immediately garner tremendous “brag factor” — where your young people will be bragging to their friends at school about your GOOD TIME Event!

Field GamesThere are many active games played on a field that could be adapted to use at your GOOD TIME Event. For instance, adjust the rules of “Ultimate Frisbee” to include these additions: guys are “Owl City” — and an “Owl City” can only catch a disc thrown by a “Carly Rae” (girls). A “Carly Rae” can catch a disc thrown by anyone. You know what resources you have, so plan your active field games accordingly.

46 GOOD TIME EVENT

© 2012, interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300

Get Back InsideHold everyone outside until everything is ready. Then turn down the lights, crank the sound system and let the hordes in! While everyone’s finding a place, you could show videos (available online) of various backpacking adventures. If you have a live band available, they should play a high-energy instrumental. Then use the “Good Time” song pumping through the sound system as the kids laugh and cheer as they see themselves and their friends on the big screen.

WelcomeJust before leader comes on stage to welcome the crowd, play this video clip from Adam: “Hi! I’m Adam Young from Owl City. I hope you’re here right now to have a GOOD TIME – because right now is when Good Times are being had! If you’re ready for a GOOD TIME, let me hear how loud you can get! Everyone on your feet, and lemme hear it!” Download the video at interlinc-online.com/goodtime.

Have your best up-front person take the stage and welcome everyone. Briefly describe what the GOOD TIME Event is. Mention that you want to provide a place for them to have some good, clean fun. Emphasize that the theme comes from the song and video by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen – that they will be introduced to by watching the video. Also tell them that you hope to encourage them in their spiritual life.

Then have your up-front person get everyone organized into teams for the games. (Be sure to show the crowd what the prizes will be for the winning team.) Depending on your situation, you may want to break into teams by schools, by grades, by towns, by birthdays – whatever is easiest to accom-plish in a very short time. You could make this easier by informing them of what team they are on when they sign in.

Settle DownIndoor GamePut together a mondo-relay where kids run up to a paper sack, pull out a slip of paper that tells them what to do, and perform that activity a certain number of times. Include as many different activities as you can think of. Some ideas: spin around a baseball bat ten times (with one end of the bat on your forehead, the other on the ground), belch five times, leap frog with someone (ten leaps each), make three laps around the room while holding an egg in a spoon in your mouth, etc. Divide into teams and run the relay. What you don’t tell the kids is that they score points for each repetition, not for how fast they go! Because the kids will think it’s a race, there will probably be some cheating going on. Let ’em cheat! When the relay is over, add up the scores while the group is settling down. Announce the scores, and then explain how points were awarded. Expect some groans from the cheaters.

Live MusicIf your youth ministry has a band, encourage them to play a few songs here. If possible, start with a popular secular song such as Cool and the Gang’s

“Celebrate Good Times” or Alan Jackson’s “Good Time” or The Fresh Beat Band’s “Good Time” or The Cars’ “Good Times Roll” or, or, or.

The VideoJust before the “Good Time” music video plays, drop in this video from Adam, “What’s up? It’s Adam here from Owl City. In this video of Carly Rae Jepsen and myself performing ‘Good Time’ is a sense of what the topic of this GOOD TIME Event is about. Pay attention to the details of the video – there will be a test!” Download this video from interlinc-online.com/goodtime.

Hand out Student Guides which will have some “How many of these questions about the video can you find the answers for?” items on it. Show the “Good Time” video by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen. When the video has finished, go through the “find it” items. Give a prize to winners. Maybe play the video again so that the kids can double-check their answers.

Here are the questions and answers:

•What kind of car is Carly driving? (2012 Fiat 500C – extra points for noting that the “C” stands for “Cabrio” or for mentioning “ragtop.”)

•What is Adam driving? (1970 Mercury Cougar XR)

•How many people are in Carly’s car? (Three)

•How many people are in Adam’s car? (Three)

•Carly has a patch on her left shoulder that says, “Made in…” where? (Heaven)

•What’s the number on the cabin? (“SM 917”)

•What happens to the orange slushy machine? (The handle breaks, it won’t turn off)

•What time is it at the cabin, according to Carly’s watch? (4:13)

•What KIND of watch is she wearing? (Casio Baby-G, extra points for “BGA131-7B”)

•Adam’s wearing a shirt with three stars on the left chest area. What’s on the right? (An eagle)

•How many marshmallows catch on fire? (Three)

•How many tents are set up? (Four, and a hammock)

TransitionMake statements about “Good Times” and following Jesus. What you say can sound something like this:

Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen show their version of a “Good Time.” We saw lots of smiles, laughing, dancing, and generally just having a good time! Would you be surprised if Adam Young of Owl City were an outspoken Christian? It’s true! I’m going to make a statement that might

interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300

seem a bit off-kilter to you, but I hope what you’re experiencing here at the Good Time Youth Event might change your mind. Here goes:

Christians can have fun.

There, I said it. It’s out in the open now. Christians can have fun!

I know that idea seems to run counter to what many teenagers believe. Let’s explore this concept a bit more in the next few minutes.

Get To The PointHave a student talk about how much this youth ministry has given him or her a “good time” and how being a part of this group has changed their mind about Jesus and faith. You’ll want to give this student (and the one noted below in Good Time, It’s My Story) LOTS of “heads up” lead time to prepare what they’re going to say in front of a group of their peers. You may even want to coach them a bit, possible video them saying their part and then cri-tiquing the video together. Be sure to pray, pray, pray with your young friends as they prepare, and then just before the meeting starts!

Make The PointUse this outline to develop your own 15-minute (no longer than that!) message about having a “Good Time.” Be sure to spice your talk up with a couple of personal stories that illustrate the point!

A Good Time Is God’s Idea – Every teenager wants to have fun. The desire to have a good time is so pervasive that God must have designed it into us. He actually tells us, in the Bible, to have a good time! Check this out: Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 – People can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, or without Him, who can eat or find enjoyment? Notice that to “find enjoyment” is “from the hand of God.” Apart from Him, we might have “fun” but may not find “enjoyment.”

A Good Time Is God’s Blessing – You might think that a “blessing” from God is something “religious” or kind of mystical. Deuteronomy 12:7 is pretty clear – There, in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the Lord your God has blessed you. Notice that we can have a “Good Time” because God has blessed us. Rather than being restricted in the fun we can have, Christians, more than anyone, are able to have a “Good Time”!

A Good Time Is God’s Gift – God isn’t sitting up in Heaven, with His arms crossed and a scowl on His face, just waiting for you to step out of line so that He can body-slam you. Since a Good Time is His idea, and comes as a result of His blessing, He really wants you to experience life to the full. Jesus said this in John 10:10 – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Did you catch that last phrase? He wants us to have life “to the full.” He really, really wants us to have a Good Time!

A Good Time, That’s My Story – At this point, a good way to introduce the gospel is to have a student share their story of how they discovered they

could know God personally. A well prepared three-minute story by a student has remarkable impact in helping other students consider Christ. The student should be prepared, even to the point of having shared their story with you or one of your trusted leaders and received coaching as needed. The story can have three points: a glimpse of their life prior to knowing Christ – what drew them to consider Him; how they actually trusted Christ – what they did, thought, or said; and the effect their decision has made on their life. Whether you extend an opportunity to the others to trust Christ at the meeting, or only introduce the Gospel through the student’s story, this will move the listener a long way in considering Christ and trusting Him.

Wrap UpRight after the Message, drop in this video clip from Adam, “As you just heard, being a Christian does not mean your life is boring by any means. I encourage you to check out everything that this youth ministry has to offer. The more involved you get, the more GOOD TIME you’ll have! It’s like the song says, ‘[You] don’t even have to try!’ God bless.”

Conclude with an emphasis on having a GOOD TIME – in contrast to trying to have fun through not-so-good activities. Explain how being a part of a group like this encourages everyone to have a GOOD TIME. Make announcements about a few of the bigger youth ministry events of the year, emphasize the

“Good Time” series you’re having (if you’re having one), and hand out sign-up cards for your next GOOD TIME Event.

Post-Event ActivitiesIf you have the time (in other words, your event isn’t on a “school night”), have the camping games, inflated obstacle course, and other activities running for the young people to enjoy after the meeting. You’ll discover that you and your leaders will have gobs of opportunities for spiritual conversations during these precious minutes! In fact, those conversations could be the “pay off” for all the hard work of pulling together an event like this. Plan for them, train for them, and pray for them.

Follow UpYour GOOD TIME Event doesn’t end when everyone drives out of the parking lot. In fact, while the heavy lifting is over, you still have a lot of work to do to take advantage of what was accomplished during the program. In the week after your event, you’ll want to…

Connect With New KidsTake a look at that pile of sign-in cards sitting on your desk. That’s not really a pile of cards; it’s a pile of GOLD! There’s GOLD in them-thar cards! With your volunteer leader team, organize the cards in the manner that fits your situation – by grade, school, gender, etc. Identify which cards represent “new” kids – students who aren’t yet a part of your youth ministry community. Assign volunteer leaders to contact each “new” student sometime in the coming week. They can call the new kids (which is preferred – talking over the phone gives a personal connection that other methods don’t), text them, send them an email, mail them a note

(most teenagers rarely get anything in the mail), or – do them all! CAUTION: Do not “stalk” a new kid by asking to be Facebook friends. Doing so would be “creepy” unless you are already friends with the student.

Promote The GOOD TIME SeriesWhen your leaders connect with the new kids, make sure they emphasize the GOOD TIME series that you’re running. Have them give the new student their physical description so that the new students will know what person to look for when they come to the next meeting.

Advertise Your Next “Big Deal” EventWhen you run your GOOD TIME Event, you should already know what your next “big deal” event will be. Make sure you promote that event during your GOOD TIME occasion. And once you have your sign-in cards, send out a promotional flyer to each student.

Final ThoughtsThe collaboration of Adam Young of Owl City with Carly Rae Jepsen has opened a huge door for your outreach efforts. Rarely does a booming Chris-tian have such popularity AND create a song that resonates in the heart of every teenager! Interlínc is proud to create these resources to enable you to maximize this opportunity to further God’s Kingdom. We are praying for you, and can hardly wait to find out how God uses you and your efforts to reach teenagers for Him!

Have a GOOD TIME!
