The style of the video is narrative, and builds up to a climax at the end of the video. The video shows actors and dancers having a religious ritual and features a take on ‘the last supper’ and Florence floating in a coffin at the end.

The genre of the video is indie pop.

RELATIONSHIP OF LYRICS

The video is symbolic of the lyrics throughout the song and mainly features the vocalist Florence, as she sings.

“We raise it up this offering” which again is a biblical reference and Florence is lifted during the video as a “final sacrifice”. Perhaps suggesting her relationship is a sacrifice or that she is sacrificing herself for love.

EDITING TECHNIQUES

The colouring of the video is slightly sepia with a reflective effect of the lighting, which is recognisable of the harp sounds and makes the video complement the vintage style costume. The twinkling effect also gives a magical element

The sepia, yellowy tones give a historical element, possibly because of the biblical and religious meaning presented in the song.

Jump cuts and fading shots are used to keep the flow of the video, and enhance the aged effect. Another effect is a layered shot when there are two shots layered on top of each other, one a close up and one a long shot, possibly to show what is going on in her head, and the two parts to her relationship.

CAMERA

The camera uses a lot of close-ups of Florence’s face to show her emotion and focus on the lead singer, making her a main feature and icon in the video.

The other shot used frequently is a long, wide shot to show the whole picture and include the landscape setting and all the dancers, giving a clear picture of the ritual they are performing.

These shots are also layered for a textured effect.

EFFECTIVENESS

Overall the Music Video is effective in it’s narrative perspective, it tells a story interestingly and successfully relates to the lyrics of the song without being too literal. It shows off the lead singer as a recognisable image, that is referenced to the band. As the song was one of the first songs by Florence and the Machine, it showed the audience they were something different and kick started their popularity.
