This class uses original transcriptions of Ella’s improvised solos as models for improvising on jazz standard tunes from the swing and bebop eras. Open to any vocalist/instrumentalist with a basic ability to read melodic staff notation. Amy Riley, Danielle Sertz, & Gina FearnDevelop an approach to acting that includes a deeper connection to source texts, choices, and expression. The class is designed for experienced performers who are looking to be challenged and engaged in characterization, physical and vocal work, and an active pursuit of objective. Outside class work is required. Students accepted through application process only (more information at www.flynnarts.org).

Youth Theater Students enjoy the thrill of performance and the satisfaction of developing fundamental skills in storytelling, improvisation, character development, and scene work.

Sara McMahonOffered for people with Parkinson’s (and their caregivers), this class engages both mind and body through many styles of dance and energizing music. We explore stretching, strengthening muscles, postural stability, and rhythm. Class is relaxed and emphasizes fun, creativity, and connection. Movement for Parkinsons Level 1 class is designed for beginners while Movement for Parkinsons Level 2 is faster-paced with more advanced movement sequences that challenge memory, coordination, and strength.

Tap Levels I, II, & IIITeen & Adults • Wednesdays Jan. 16-May 8 (no class 2/27 & 4/24) Level 1: 5:30-6:30 pm Level 2: 6:35-7:35 pm Level 3: 7:40-8:40 pm $185 • Instructor TBDA combination of hoofing/rhythm tap with elements of classic and Broadway-style, this class underscores tap’s origins in the African polyrhythms of America’s Jazz Age. Level II tackles more complex rhythms and choreography. Tap III requires significant prior experience and high-skill level. Tap shoes required.

Each class consists of a proper warm-up and stretch followed by fun, easy-to-learn combinations that sharpen the mind and tone the body.

Hip-HopTeen & Adult • Thursdays Jan. 17-May 9 (no class 2/28 & 4/25) 5:35-7:05 pm • $225 • Rose BedardTake part in a class that exemplifies what hip-hop dance is all about: expression, movement, and unity. Over the course of 12 weeks, participants learn hip-hop moves in various styles and choreography. Instructor/choreographer Rose Bedard puts her students’ efforts and talents to use in two masterpieces for the end-of-semester showcase.

7:15-8:15 pm • $75 • Reshma SinuIndian classical dance—also called artistic or Natya Yoga—is the oldest form of Indian dance, dating back over 2,000 years. A combination of steps, postures, hand gestures, and expression offers physical and mental benefits similar to yoga. No background in dance or yoga necessary.

Moth-style StorytellingTeen & Adult • Tuesdays Jan. 22-March 5 (no class 2/26) 5:30-7 pm • $165 • Susanne SchmidtWhat’s your story? In this six-week class, practice the art of live, first-person, Moth-style storytelling. Learn how to structure, edit, and perform your own story with a master storyteller and Moth producer before sharing your work at a live Story Slam. A class field trip to the Moth Story Slam in Burlington takes place on a date TBD (cost included in class tuition).

Short Form ImprovisationTeen & Adult • Thursdays Jan. 24- March 7 (no class 2/28) 5:30-7 pm • $150 • Mark SteinImprovisational comedy develops theatrical and public speaking skills, builds self-confidence, and is a lot of fun. In this course, we learn the fundamentals of improv and apply them to scenes and games in a fast-paced, casual, and supportive setting.

Acting for Bashful BeginnersTeen & Adult • Tuesdays March 5-April 9 • 7:15-8:45 pm $150 • Susan PalmerLeave your inhibitions behind and join this freeing romp into your most spontaneous self. Learn theater exercises, improvisation, and scene study skills that lead to greater confidence and ease of truthful expression, both onstage or off. Uncover the mysteries of the actor’s process and your own creative potential.

Placement sessions for grades 2-8 are January 9 from 5-6 pm. Note that students may be placed as follows: grade 2 in Sprouts or Juniors; grades 3-4 in Juniors only; grades 5-6 in Juniors or All-Stars; and grades 7-8 in All-Stars only. No preparation necessary for placement sessions; they are low-stress, full of laughter and theater games.

The Youth Theater performance is on May 7 in FlynnSpace.
