The rhythms in both pieces have similarities and differences. Firstly,‘Sing we at pleasure’ is in 3/4

and‘You can get it if you really want it’ is in 4/4.‘Sing we at pleasure’ has a very lively/fast tempo.

due to the word setting of happy pastoral times.‘You can get it if you really want it’ however has a

very layer back/relaxed pulse, and does not have the vigour of‘Sing we at pleasure.’

Both pieces do syncopation.’Sing we at pleasure uses syncopation within parts throughout and is a

very prominent feature of the piece.‘You can get it if you really want it’ also uses syncopation

within the vocal line, however it is very gentle and is not as prominent. Another similarity on the

pieces is the emphasis of beat one. In‘You can get it if you really want,’ the bass plays an accent

on beat 1. There is also an emphasis and a clear sense of time signature in‘Sing we at pleasure,

however this is occasionally distorted by the use of hemiolas.

The texture of the two pieces is very contrasting.’Sing we at pleasure is nearly all contrapuntal,

with individually moving parts, canonic entries, hemiolas and strong syncopation.‘You can get it if

you really want’is very homophonic and is not contrapuntal at all. A similarity however is the fact

that in‘Sing we at pleasure at the start of each section, all of the parts sing homophonically, like

‘You can get it if you really want’ does throughout. A final similarity is that all of the parts play

throughout each of the two pieces. None of the parts for either drop out at any point.

In conclusion, even though the pieces were written hundreds of years apart from each other, it is

possible to draw similarities and differences between the two pieces, however there are still some

major differences such as the contrapuntal part writing in‘Sing we at pleasure’ compared to the

simple writing of‘You can get if if you really want.’
