How to Use This Book

Welcome to the Today’s Liturgy: Annual Planning Resource 2022. This book is the result of years of working with music ministers across the country, and some hard work here at OCP. As we move into the digital age, one of the areas where people continue to make use of print resources is in planning calendars and diaries. We at Today’s Liturgy have seen this trend, and so while we are moving to digital forms for the articles of the magazine, we have heard from so many of our customers that a print version of the planners is still needed. So here we are, with an annual resource that includes all the planners and all the song suggestions for the entire year.

We believe that having this annual resource will have several benefits:

– We will now be able to easily plan out the use of songs throughout the year. Especially in Ordinary Time, we will be able to make sure that congregational favorites are used often enough, but spread out over the year, so that they will continue to have maximum effectiveness in our music ministry. This is especially true for songs at Communion, any seasonal Psalms we may use, and general songs of praise.

– As the years go by, we will be better able to compare, year over year, the choices we have made for Christmas and the Triduum.

– Songs newly added to our repertoires can be more easily programmed, and the number of new songs can be more easily kept to a reasonable level.

For those of you who are interested in looking for digital resources for music planning and liturgy preparation, Liturgy.com has some wonderful new options for you. Liturgy.com now has a free version, as well as two other versions with enhanced features, with all of the same suggestions that you find in Today’s Liturgy plus a whole lot more. This will be especially valuable for those who have bilingual or multicultural communities.

The world of liturgy preparation will continue to evolve over the coming years, but here at Today’s Liturgy we are committed to supporting music directors all across the country for years to come. We hope that you will continue to let us know what works best for you!

Rejoice in the Lord always!—Dr. Glenn CJ Byer

CHORALThe Midnight Cry (Winges) OCP 4577Christ Comes, the Promised Peace of God (Modlin) OCP 12189Rorate Caeli (Joncas) OCP 4627

The feast of Christ the King of the Universe gave us a glimpse of what is to come, a vision of glory, an opportu-nity to sing “Holy, Holy” to God for sending us Christ who reigns over all creation. Whereas last Sunday focused on Christ, this First Sunday of Advent focuses more on us and our attitude about the coming of Christ.

Besides being the First Sunday of Advent, it was Thanks-giving weekend. During the next few weeks, singers and instrumentalists all over the country will come to music directors like me (just at the end of rehearsal when I’m too tired to react) and say, “Oh incidentally, I won’t be here for Christmas—I’m going away.”

Well, let’s get together folks. Those people who “are going away” from me and my Christmas liturgies might just be “coming home” to visit you and yours.

A lot of college students are home for vacation this weekend. Why not invite today those who are able and interested to sing for Christmas? If you’re organized, you could even give them the packet of music necessary for participation in the Christmas liturgies. Or if you’re really organized, you might even have the music recordings so they could learn the notes in spare time on their own.

On this or one of these Sundays, you might even make an announcement for parishioners who will have relatives in town for Christmas who would like to participate in music ministry for Christmas to come speak with you. Use the same procedures as above or send them the music. I know I have some really fine musicians who leave town for the holidays. If somehow, we could coordinate efforts across the miles, our music programs would be richer. I mean, really. Christmas music is Christmas music. I’m sure they’d be familiar with some of it! — Elaine Rendler-McQueeney (1994)

As many know from his Lamentations, Jeremiah, the great prophet, is frequently identified with sadness and suffering.

Last week’s First Reading showed that Jeremiah is also quite capable of expressing joy. There he proclaimed the coming of a “new David” who will reign over the people.

Today’s First Reading is actually the entire fifth chapter of the book of the prophet Baruch, Jeremiah’s scribe/secretary. Baruch delivered many of Jeremiah’s prophecies after they both were sent into exile. Both prophets condemned injustice, called for repentance, and announced that God had granted forgiveness to the people. These prophets foreshadowed the Gospel figure of John the Baptist who today echoes Isaiah as he announces the one who is to come. Today’s Communion antiphon is also from Baruch.

As I read through Jeremiah and Baruch, the beloved chorus “Va, pensiero” from Verdi’s opera Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar) kept running through my head. Its text is rooted in Psalm 137, a lament of the Jewish people in exile. Consider listening to this beautiful chorus during Advent as a musical reflection. Pray for the people around the world who are in exile, whether from natural disaster, persecution, or warfare.

John’s message is clear: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” Next week’s Gospel will tell us just how we are to prepare the way of the Lord.

Remember the bumper sticker “Jesus is coming. Look busy!”? Consider creating a “Giving Tree” somewhere in the worship space. It provides a balance to the message of the Advent Wreath: as we wait and pray, we show our concern for people who have less than we do.

Some say this feast originally celebrated the miracle of a birth to aged parents, Saints Joachim and Anne. By medieval times, though, the emphasis had shifted to Mary’s sinlessness.

The Immaculate Conception was declared dogma by Pope Pius IX in Ineffabilis Deus on December 8, 1854.

There are so many musical choices for this graced day on which we celebrate Mary’s freedom from original sin, even from the time of her conception. Many sometimes confuse today’s feast with Jesus’ conception. If that’s true for you, too, just remember that ideally it takes nine months to have a baby. Jesus’ conception is celebrated on March 25, the feast of the Annunciation.

Today’s First Reading from Genesis 3 tells the story of the fall of Adam and Eve, a story of how our human sinfulness began. It segues (via Responsorial Psalm 98,

“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds”) to Luke 1:26–38, the story of the Annunciation. We learn of the “marvelous deed” of Jesus’ conception.

I recently heard about an organist who began to play the Gloria on this feast and was interrupted because “the Gloria is not to be used during Advent.”

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says this about the Gloria: “It is sung or said on Sundays outside the Seasons of Advent and Lent, on solemnities and feasts, and at special celebrations of a more solemn character” (53).

In fairness to both parties, this instruction could be con-fusing at first glance. The Gloria is eliminated during Advent, except on solemnities and feasts, and today is a solemnity! Alleluias continue throughout Advent!

In 1999, Saint Pope John Paul II proclaimed Our Lady of Guadalupe Patroness of the Americas, Empress of Latin America, and Protector of Unborn Children. From the 16th century to the present, Mary has been honored under this title by 25 popes.

Let us remind our communities, no matter where they are located, that we are a universal Church, which means we share concern for all God’s children. The website for the US Catholic bishops contains several resources associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe and her patronages.

There is also a prayer for religious liberty directed to Nues-tra Señora that can be found at tinyurl.com/religiousliberty.

Today’s Communion Antiphon (first option) is from the Magnificat (Luke 1:52). The “O” Antiphons. The music suggestions for Advent include songs based on the “O” Antiphons. The “O” Antiphons are: O Wisdom (Sapientia), O Lord (Adonai), O Root of Jesse (O Radix Jesse), O Key of David (O Clavis David), O Dayspring (O Oriens), O King of Nations (O Rex Gentium), and O God-with-Us (Em-manuel). Each antiphon makes biblical reference to Christ and has been used since the early Church. Liturgically they are to be sung at Vespers, December 17–23, but by popular tradition are used throughout the entire season. The hymn tune veni, veni emmanuel is probably the oldest and most familiar setting. More recent settings of these antiphons include Dan Schutte’s “Christ, Circle Round Us” [BB 56], Michael Joncas’ “Let the King of Glory Come” [BB 63], and Steve Angrisano’s “Emmanuel” [BB 57].
