1 When do you listen to music?2 Do you listen to music when you are doing your

homework?3 Does it help you learn?

How important is music in your life? When and why do you listen to music? For thousands of years people in every country have listened to music for pleasure. But now we know that it is good for our brains and bodies too. Music is relaxing and it helps people get better when they are ill. In some hospitals there is music so people feel happier. Some dentists play soft music to relax their patients so they don’t move. But it doesn’t always help! Music can also help us learn. Many children learn better when there is music playing than when there isn’t any music at all. But only soft classical or pop music will help. Loud rap and rock music aren’t any good at all.

Music is good for you!

Listening to your favourite song will help you exercise longer and harder. But make sure you choose something fast. If not, you’ll fall asleep! Music helps with the housework too. Play a fast rock or reggae song and you will tidy your room in no time!Cows are great music fans. They give more milk when music is playing. But they are old-fashioned and they prefer classical music to modern styles. Beethoven is a great favourite. Our pets also have their favourite types of music. Most dogs and cats like harp music best because it is relaxing. Some people leave music on for their pets when they go out, so they don’t feel alone. Soft music is fine, but don’t play anything loud and fast. They’ll just go crazy. An American company has recorded a CD of music especially for pets! So now there’s something for everyone!

12 What musical traditions are there in your country? What instruments do people play?

Emerton Youth Brass BandMy name is Emily and I play the tuba in the Emerton Youth Brass Band. It’s a traditional British brass band with 28 musicians. I’ve been a member of the band since I was eight years old. The band practises once a week and we often take part in competitions. Last year we came fifth in the National Youth Championships. Everyone loves being in the band because the music is joyful and the competitions are fun.

My name is Ted and I play the trombone in the band. In Emerton, like many other towns in Britain, brass bands are a tradition. The first brass band started here in the 1880s. It is also a tradition in my family to play in brass bands. Both my father and grandfather played the cornet in the band. In my grandfather’s day, there weren’t any girls in the band, but today there are boys and girls.
