MUSI 1105 2 CreditsMajor Instrument - Foundation IStudents will work one-on-one with an instructor (vocal orinstrumental) on the interpretation and performance of repertoire.Students will also develop a foundation of technical, musical, andsight reading skills essential for advanced study.

MUSI 1111 3 CreditsHistory of Popular MusicStudents will survey the evolution of Western popular musicfrom the early 20th century through to the present. Students willexamine the various influences and exclusions that have shapedthe development of different styles of popular music. They willalso consider how musical elements, lyrics, and technology haveshaped popular music.

MUSI 1112 2 CreditsIntroduction to the Music IndustryStudents will undertake a comprehensive overview of the musicindustry as well as familiarize themselves with the factors thatcontribute to success in the music business. They will also gainan understanding of the inter-relatedness of the many facets ofthe music industry, an essential element in professional growth,viability, and success.

MUSI 1115 3 CreditsClassical Music in Western CultureStudents will cultivate an understanding of classical music inwestern culture by listening to and studying musical worksrepresenting different styles, genres, geographical regions,and time periods. Students will also gain an understandingof the social, political, economic, and artistic context in whichthis music emerged. They will also develop basic aural skills inhearing rhythm, melody, harmony, colour, texture, form, andorchestration. To further enhance their aural skills, students willattend specified concerts (with costs incurred) and will activelylisten to and analyse the performances. Note: Not for credittowards the Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts degree.

MUSI 1120 3 CreditsMusic RudimentsStudents will study the basic written aspects of musical language,acquiring the knowledge of all common clefs, intervals, commonscales, basic chord structures and progressions, cadences,transposition, rhythm and fundamental musical terms.

NOTE: This course is open to non-music majors, and MUSI 1120replaces MUSI 1100 & MUSI 1200. Students may only receivecredit for either MUSI 1100 & 1200 or MUSI 1120.

MUSI 1130 3 CreditsMusic Technology IMUSI 1130 provides an introduction to music technology anddesktop recording. Key topics include digital audio workstations,music notation software, music composition and sound design. Students will present an online portfolio of their work in the finalweeks of the course.

NOTE: MUSI 1130 replaces MUSI 1102. Students may onlyreceive credit for either MUSI 1130 or 1102.

MUSI 1150 3 CreditsThe Language of Music IStudents will review basic musical concepts, including notation,intervals, scales, modes, chords, and rhythm. They will then studyelementary acoustics, effective melodic design and begin writingbasic four-part harmony. They will see illustrations of all conceptsthrough the analysis of representative historical examples.

MUSI 1153 3 CreditsHistory of Music I: Cornerstones of Music HistoryThis music history survey course engages students in anoverview of major innovations in Western art music from antiquityto the present under the theme “Cornerstones of Music History.”Students will be introduced to salient musical characteristicsthrough selected examples of Western music, and will discusshow these characteristics were affected by contextual factorsincluding socio-cultural developments and geo-political events.Students will also cultivate aural skills by critically listening tomusic and studying representative compositions, and will begin todevelop the skills that music historians use to research and writeabout music.

Prerequisites: MUSI 1115 or MUSI 1203 with a “B” or 75% (B) orabove on the KPU Music Placement Test

MUSI 1154 1 CreditsKeyboard Skills IStudents will begin to develop basic keyboard skills. They willstudy keyboard harmony (chord progressions and harmonization)and will develop the ability to use simple accompaniment patternsand to harmonize simple melodies. Students will also developskills in sight-reading and transposition.

MUSI 1155 1 CreditsSecondary Instrument - IStudents will work one-on-one with an instructor (vocal orinstrumental) on the interpretation and performance of repertoire,and on fundamental technical and sight-reading requirements.

MUSI 1158 2 CreditsPiano Repertoire I: The Baroque PeriodStudents will undertake a chronological survey and analysis ofimportant string-keyboard solo works from the Baroque era (ca.1600-ca. 1750). They will study this repertoire from the point ofview of the performer and teacher, assessing the music not onlyon its own terms, but also in the context of the development ofstring-keyboard instruments themselves, historic performancepractices, and sociological trends. Students majoring in pianoperformance will be required to perform selected repertoire inclass.

MUSI 1167 2 CreditsKwantlen String Orchestra IStudents will rehearse and perform a wide variety of orchestralrepertoire from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as works bycontemporary Canadian composers.

MUSI 1168 2 CreditsKwantlen Wind Ensemble IStudents will rehearse and perform works of the Wind Literaturerepertoire from the 16th century to the present day. They willstudy and perform new works by Canadian composers eachsemester. Students will perform major works from the 400-year repertoire of Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds and BrassEnsemble literature.

Note: Placement in ensemble is by audition and/or interview. Thiscourse is open to all music majors and other Kwantlen students.Members of the community may participate on a non-credit basis.

MUSI 1171 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsGuitar Chamber Ensemble IStudents will perform duo, trio, and/or quartet music for guitarensemble. They will study classical compositions but mayalso perform arrangements or transcriptions of standard jazzcompositions, world, and folk music.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Diploma in Music program and/orpermission of instructor

MUSI 1172 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsPiano Chamber Ensemble IStudents will be placed in small ensembles for the study,preparation and performance of four-hand and eight-hand pianorepertoire and works involving piano and different instrumental orvocal combinations. They will work with an assigned instrumentalor vocal partner and will accompany that person in recital and atthe final jury.

Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor

MUSI 1173 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsPercussion Ensemble IStudents will study and perform repertoire for percussioninstruments of both definite and indefinite pitch. They will alsostudy selected rhythmic systems of work music cultures such asAfrican drumming and Indonesian Gamelan.

NOTE: Both percussion and non-percussion majors may take thiscourse.


MUSI 1174 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsWoodwind Ensemble IStudents will study, rehearse and perform original compositionsand arrangements of repertoire for different woodwind instrumentcombinations. They will audition for the ensemble at the beginning ofeach semester. Students will perform in concerts both on- and off-campus.


MUSI 1177 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsJazz Band IStudents will work on improvisation skills and chart reading in anensemble setting. They will perform selections from the standardjazz band repertoire. Students will perform in concert both on- andoff-campus throughout the semester.


MUSI 1178 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsJazz Combo IStudents will work on improvisation skills and chart reading ina small jazz combo setting. They will also prepare and performselections from the standard jazz band repertoire. Students willperform in concert both on- and off- campus throughout thesemester.


MUSI 1179 (formerly MUSI 1166) 2 CreditsString Chamber Ensemble IStudents will study, prepare and perform works for string duos,trios and/or quartets. Students may also work in mixed ensemblesinvolving piano, woodwinds, brass, and/or guitar.

MUSI 1180 2 CreditsOpera Workshop Ensemble IStudents will study, rehearse and perform staged solo, smallensemble and chorus repertoire from a variety of musical styles,including Opera, Oratorio, Musical Theatre and Operetta.Students will perform in concerts both on and off campus.

Note: Students will be required to perform in a variety oflanguages.

MUSI 1181 2 CreditsKwantlen Chamber Singers IStudents will study, rehearse and perform chamber choirrepertoire in a variety of musical styles, ranging from Renaissanceto the present day. MUSI 1250 3 CreditsThe Language of Music IIStudents will study late-Baroque and Classical diatonic harmonythrough writing and analysis. They will examine the function of alldiatonic seventh chords and complete writing exercises in choraland keyboard styles. They will also look at musical form (period,binary, rounded binary, ternary) and combine their knowledge ofharmony and form in the composition of a short original work.


MUSI 1251 2 CreditsAural Musicianship IIStudents will continue to develop essential musicianship skills,including sight singing, rhythm, conducting, error detection, aswell as melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation.

MUSI 1253 3 CreditsHistory of Music II: Heroes, Politics, and WarThis music history survey course engages students in anintensive overview of major developments in Western art musicunder the theme “Heroes, Politics, and War.” Students willexamine changes to musical genres, forms, and aestheticsfrom antiquity to the present, and will relate them to significantsocio-cultural developments and geo-political events. They willcompare and contrast the careers and artistic outputs of leadingcomposers in the history of Western music, and examine howthese composers' successes and failures were often associatedwith external social, cultural, and technological factors. Studentswill continue to cultivate aural skills by critically listening to musicand studying representative compositions, and will further developskills in researching, writing, and thinking about music.


MUSI 1254 1 CreditsKeyboard Skills IIStudents will develop basic keyboard skills by furtheringtheir study of keyboard harmony (chord progressions andharmonization) and by developing their ability to harmonizemelodies using simple accompaniment patterns. MUSI 1291 3 CreditsSongwriting and ArrangingStudents will study popular song styles from the beginning of the19th century to the present in order to identify and understand keyelements of song writing, and to develop original text and melodicideas. Students will combine melodic and rhythmic ideas withpopular harmonic progressions to create original material. Theywill also develop scoring skills through the creation of full scores(arrangements) and/or charts (lead sheets).Prerequisites: MUSI 1120Attributes: PATH-3

MUSI 2340 2 CreditsCollaborative Piano IStudents will explore the collaborative art of performing withvocalists. They will study and perform assigned works thatare representative of standard vocal repertoire, including (butnot limited to) Italian art songs of the 17th and 18th centuries,German Lieder, French mélodies, and orchestral transcriptions oforatorio and opera solos.

Note: MUSI 2340, MUSI 2440, MUSI 3540, and MUSI 3640(Collaborative Piano I - IV) are not sequential and may be taken inany order. This course is for piano majors.

MUSI 2350 3 CreditsThe Language of Music IIIStudents will study advanced diatonic harmony and begin thestudy of chromaticism. They will cover sequences, secondary-function chords, modulation, modal borrowing, and continue thestudy of form, relating it to large-scale harmonic plans. They willcombine their knowledge of harmony and form in the compositionof a short original work.


MUSI 2351 2 CreditsAural Musicianship IIIStudents will work toward the development of more advancedmusicianship skills, including sight singing, rhythm, conducting,error detection, as well as melodic, harmonic, and rhythmicdictation.

MUSI 2353 3 CreditsHistory of Music III: Music and the ArtsStudents will engage in intensive study of the development ofWestern art music during the Romantic era, from circa 1800 tocirca 1900. They will focus on the historical development of styles,genres, and forms, but will also examine music as an expressionof Western culture by relating it to changing artistic, social, andpolitical contexts. They will continue to cultivate aural skills byactively listening to and studying representative works, and willfurther develop skills in researching, writing, and thinking criticallyabout music.

MUSI 2354 1 CreditsKeyboard Skills IIIStudents will develop a higher level of keyboard proficiencyby furthering their study of keyboard harmony (chordprogressions and harmonization) and by cultivating their ability toharmonize melodies using simple accompaniment patterns. MUSI 2358 2 CreditsPiano Repertoire III: The Romantic PeriodStudents will undertake a chronological survey and analysisof important piano solo and concerto works from the Romanticperiod (from the time of Schubert to ca. 1900). They will studythis repertoire from the point of view of the performer andteacher, assessing the music not only on its own terms, but alsoin the context of the development of the piano itself, historicperformance practices, and sociological trends. Students majoringin piano performance will be required to perform selectedrepertoire in class.


MUSI 2359 1 CreditsLyric Diction IStudents will learn the symbols and sounds of the InternationalPhonetic Alphabet. They will then learn the basic phoneticsand principles of lyric diction of Italian and German as used instandard concert and operatic repertoire for voice.

Students will encounter a diversity ofgenres, compositional approaches, and aesthetic ideals thatemerged during this timeframe, and will situate salient featuresof contemporary music through a comparative examination of“common- practice” characteristics established in the Baroque,Classical, and Romantic periods.
