June was an interesting month for Music Matters Inclusive Choir!

We are perfecting our new songs “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers and “I am Titanium” by David Guetta and Sia, which we started at the end of May During the last two weeks of June, Gráinne took a well-deserved holiday. The super enthusiastic and wonderful, Joyanne, took over rehearsals and taught us “You Got a Friend in Me” from Disney’s “Toy Story” and “I Knew you were Trouble” by Taylor Swift

We are looking forward to learning new harmonies and working on “dynamics” (louds

and softs) over the next few weeks!

Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome Conference

The 20th International Scientific Meeting of the Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome Educational Foundation will take place in Dublin from Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st July 2013.

The theme of the conference is "A Celebration of Differences"

The conference takes place in the Regency Hotel in Drumcondra. This is the very first year that this conference will be held in Ireland. There will be people travelling here from all over the world.

Our choir has been invited to sing at the Opening Ceremony, which will start on Thursday 18th July at 6.00 PM We would especially like to thank Aine’s mum, Anne Lawlor, who is organising this conference for inviting us to sing. We wish all the visitors a “Céad Míle Fáilte” (One hundred thousand

welcomes) to Ireland and hope they enjoy their stay here! For more information on Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome visit these websites: 22Q11 Ireland: www.22q11ireland.org Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome Educational Foundation: www.vcfsef.org

Interesting Article from The Guardian newspaper:

Why don’t men join Choirs?

We at Music Matters are lucky to have so many men singing with us! However, most choir directors have huge problems getting men to become involved. Chris Samuel, a Choir-master and Singer, discovered that many men enjoy singing, just not so much in choirs – and he came up with an answer to this problem! He toured with Australia's Spooky Men's Chorale, which sings about power tools,

adaptors, beards and male warrior fantasies (as well as Abba covers in Viking helmets). Then he started up his own choir, called The Magnificent AK47 which sings about the sanctuary of the shed, and their appreciation of concrete, duct tape

and the inventor of the lawnmower!

Research Project – Building Real Communities

Researchers at the University of Limerick are looking for adults with disabilities and mental health conditions to take part in a research project You can tell your story about making and keeping strong relationships with family, friends, and people at school or work. The interview will take up about an hour and a half of your time and will take place at a time and a place of your choosing. If you agree then your talk will be recorded and later typed out. You can decide if things you say can be used when the research team tells other people about this study. No one will be told the words are from you. If you would like to take part, email: Emma Burns,

Research Assistant: [email protected] or Dr Nancy Salmon, Lecturer in Clinical Therapies: [email protected] Or phone: 061-234275 Website: http://idsatul.wordpress.com/participate-
