Music Labels Research Major Label: EMI EMI is a British multinational music recording and publishing company, they also manufacture electronic devices. EMI was founded in 1887 by Emile Berliner. In 2012, it was the 4 th largest record label and had a group of subsidiaries. EMI do not specialise in a specific genre as the artists they have signed are so diversed from Slipknot to Jay-Z EMI have had huge artists such as The Beatles, David Bowie, Blur, Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg and others. All these artists listed have all won awards which shows that EMI are very prestigious ] Independent Label: Rough Trade Rough Trade is an independent record label that started in 1978 by Geoff Travis. They have 2 current stores which are both in London; Rough Trade East and Rough Trade West and are currently working on a third store in New York. When Rough Trade stated, they specialised in punk, very early Indie Pop and early post punk bands such as Buzzcocks and The Smiths. Rough Trade’s ethos is to sign new and upcoming indie/punk artists. Independent Label: Rough Trade

Rough Trade is an independent record label that started in 1978 by Geoff Travis. They have 2 current stores which are both in London; Rough Trade East and Rough Trade West and are currently working on a third store in New York.When Rough Trade stated, they specialised in punk, very early Indie Pop and early post punk bands such as Buzzcocks and The Smiths. Rough Trade’s ethos is to sign new and upcoming indie/punk artists.They have been very successful; one example of this is when they signed The Smiths. They released 5 studio albums under Rough Trade with roughly half a million copies sold per albumRough Trade Records have also had Arcade Fire and the Strokes under their label which they are both award winning bands. Arcade Fire has won 2 Brit Awards, 2 Grammys and also several Juno Awards. The Strokes has won a Brit Award and also 4 NME awards
